Deer Lake State Park - Entry to walk

Not sure if there's another "entrance", but the entry point we used to this state park was…read morebasically a dirt road right off Scenic Hwy 30A between Seacrest and Seaside. I didn't really think of this as your typical "state park" but more just a public beach. But this was the nicest public beach I've ever been to. The short dirt road leads to an open area where you'll find what looks like a mailbox on top of a short pole. There you will find envelopes and a slot. There are signs and on the honor system you are to place $3 into the envelope, seal it and tear off the attached portion of the envelope which turns into a rear view mirror hangtag. We were also informed that we would get a $100 ticket if that hangtag was not visible by a park ranger who happened to be at said mailbox on the second day we visited the park. How enforceable is this? How daring are you? As you continue past the mailbox, you will find a small... very small parking area. Officially it fits about 15 cars and golf carts. Beyond that and you'll have to carefully turn around and find a spot on the dirt road. On one side of the parking lot is a building which I assume is where the restrooms are. On the other side is the path to the beach. This short concrete walkway leads to a beautiful and LONG boardwalk that I would estimate to be at least 150 yards. As you walk, you can see the huge expanse of beautiful protected dunes. At the end of the boardwalk you will finally feast your eyes on the Gulf coast beach. Since this is a public state park beach, there is no available shower or water hose or even garbage cans. And there's definitely no lifeguard on duty. Despite the lack of these amenities, the people who visit this area of the beach has done a great job policing and picking up after themselves. The beach is clean with pristine, beautiful white sand. Other than the long walk to actually reach the beach, we had a great time!

Follow the path, to a long boardwalk over some beautiful beach dunes down to the beach. Along the way you can catch a view of the Dune Lake. The beach which you access from the park is beautiful, not many folks on it and so you can imagine the beaches as they probably were before development. A quiet and peaceful repose, certainly worth checking out.

I ran about five miles of them from 283 to 83, then on west of 83. The trails are mostly single track sand trails with some roots, but few other obstacles. I ran, but most people could easily hike these trails without difficulty. The vegetation is low, which makes it easy to see. I really enjoyed this. In addition to the single track trails, there are also service roads that you could explore if you wanted more distance. The biggest issue that there were some segments that were completely flooded and required mid-calf wading to cross. One section is just west of 83, and the other was about 2 miles west of 283 or 1 mile East of 83. My shoes were totally soaked, but it was still fun. Just be prepared if there has been a lot of rain. The forest was pretty quiet. I only saw two other people, and a random pair of black New Balance shoes just off the side of the trail. I would love to know their story! This is a great place to explore! Highly recommend!

It's peaceful. I paddle the channel that leads to the Gulf with amazing reflections on the water. I paddle the cove around the private docks. I see crab pots and an occasional gator observing me - an intruder. The first time I paddled here I pulled my board up on the sand and walked over to the Gulf, but when I came back, my board was gone. The water rose very quickly and my board was pulled out into the channel. So I swam out and got it and learned a lesson about how quickly the water level can change. It's all of this, the diversity of looks and the complexity of it, that make it my favorite place to paddle.

My family and I spent a couple hours at the beach. It is a great place to paddleboard or swim. There is a man-made reef about one or two football fields out. You can get to it by going to the yellow poles on the beach and swimming directly out. If the poles appear to be one you are going the right way, if you can see both poles then you are off course. There was a group of kayakers out there doing a tour when I was there so I swam out and joined them. It was fun but I don't recommend anyone who didn't competitively swim to do that. The waves can be big and a paddleboard or kayak would have been safer. Once you get out to the reef there is so much wildlife. Lots of fish and even sea turtles!!
