I normally live in Boston, but I lived in Rome (specifically, Pigneto) for three months.
I am an enthusiastic chess player, and that's how I found Pigmalione -- they have regular chess tournaments (I think the first Monday of the month?), but it is possible to find an informal game on other days.
I do not speak Italian very well, but I made a few chess friends. This is how I came to learn about the place.
The decor speaks for itself: this is not a luxurious, gold-plated lounge. This is a small bar to come grab a beer, play a game, and meet some interesting people. And Pigmalione delivers on that goal consistently. The drinks are good (and cheap!), the crowd is friendly, and the atmosphere is fantastic. This place exudes "cool," without trying to be cool.
If you're a chess player or an otherwise adventurous tourist, it's worth a trip. The one warning is about the toilet. It's little more than a hole in the ground. Not a problem for guys, but girls might find it a little... unappealing. That's why I only give it four stars. read more
