I've shopped at this Publix location every week for the past four years. This store is always…read moreclean, usually well-stocked, and the vast majority of the associates are pleasant to deal with. Shopping here truly is a pleasure. The produce department staff are perhaps the friendliest in the store. The stockers are always quick to greet you and offer help. And there is a charming lady behind the fresh produce counter who makes sure she welcomes each shopper who gets within twenty feet of her station. In general, the cashiers and baggers are friendly and keep the lines moving. A shout-out to Brittany and Dolores who have to be the best cashiers in the store. They both exhibit the perfect balance of interacting with the customer without needless chatting, which ultimately slows down the check-out process. IMO, management should have new cashiers shadow them to learn how to best work in that role. However, there are a couple areas for improvement ... Some of the college students working at the sub counter in the deli need more training. On several occasions, when ordering a premium sub (e.g. Jamaican Jerk Chicken, Holiday Turkey, etc.), the associate had no clue what ingredients to use; I had to read them the ingredients from the placard that is taped to the glass facing the customer. For the $8+ subs, this is kind of a big deal because if you aren't paying attention (or pre-order online), and they don't add the bacon or specialty cheese, for example, you really aren't getting your money's worth. Sale tags are notoriously left up past the end-of-sale date so that they don't ring up with the sale price at the register. While the customer service counter will normally refund the entire price (not just the difference) when this occurs, it can still be an inconvenience, ranging from small to huge. The inconvenience is small if I notice it while checking out, and I can go immediately to the customer service counter. This becomes more of a problem during the summer months when my groceries start to thaw while I wait for them to walk back and verify the sale tag is still up. The inconvenience is huge if I don't notice it until I get home and have to immediately return to the store after unpacking my groceries.

Now that I mention it....isn't that a fire hazard? Anyway, this Dollar General is pretty large in size and not over loaded with unorganized inventory. The staff are always friendly and helpful and visible just in case you have a question or concern. Here you can find great deals on everyday buys. Be sure to download the app to your smartphone and get the digital coupons. These help to make already inexpensive products even cheaper and an added plus for manufacture coupons if you don't get the Sunday paper! Take note of a frequent coupons for $5 off any purchase of $25 or more. (TIP: Be sure to have the cashier take this coupon off PRIOR to any manufacture coupons.) This store is highly recommend for your everyday needs.

Later, when rounding a corner, a merchandise post scraped my armed cutting it. At checkout, when I told the same cashier about the incident, she didn't respond so I repeated myself. She said "I heard you" and kept ringing up. She was so awful that the customer behind me loudly said "RUDE!" Such a shame that a paid employee has zero consideration for customers much less having her employer's back. A small child could seriously injure their head, the liability is there waiting to happen. This is a WALL of unsafe conditions. That said, if you manage to survive the death trap of the parking lot, this Trader Joe's isn't half bad. I mean, it's small compared to the one I'm used to in South Florida, but it still retains the charm of any Trader Joe's. The staff is genuinely polite and willing to go out of their way to help you. On my last visit, there was a spill on the floor and not only did they make sure I saw it, but they cleaned it up swiftly. Now I do have to say that the placement of products is a tad odd. I was looking for frozen mini baguettes and it took two visits for me to find them. Apparently these were in the middle of the frozen vegetables section, which frankly makes no sense to me, but okay - you do you, boo boo. I honestly should've asked beforehand about that placement, but eh, when you're in a rush, well - you forget things. At any rate, pleased this is up here in Tallahassee, but the placement next to Starbucks is just seriously encouraging my already terrifying coffee addiction.

I'd encourage anyone with insights on the history of this store to contribute. I do know, from the folks behind the counter these days, that it's been around for "over forty years" - I suspect it's well over that; my sense is that it's probably from the late forties/early fifties judging from its current layout/amenities. What has intrigued me for quite some time is the signage and its old-time font/coloration/layout. Having come three times over that past two weeks, I can say that this would be where I'd come if I were seeking out "the good stuff" for making up meals focused on commensality. Commensality is a good word that I learned recently. There's a great book ("Commensality: From Everyday Food to Feast") that delves into this important social act - one that I fear we experience less and less. Check it out. I associate the Fourth Avenue Super Market with commensality because the produce and the butcher-counter are chockful of items that simply aren't made for a single person - perhaps not even for a single family. Take, for example, the "Soul Bag". I'm not entirely certain what offal, cuts or livestock byproducts are within it - but I suspect that it contains the central cast of characters for a centerpiece dish for a large gathering of gourmands and gourmets alike. You don't buy the Soul Bag to take it back home and serve up two portions. At least, I wouldn't. Perhaps I'm overly romanticizing this store - that's quite possible. I fear that with the rapidly encroaching gentrification of Frenchtown, the Fourth Avenue Super Market risks being swept away within the coming decade to make way for something brighter and shinier. I hope that isn't the case - and that it continues to exist as it does today. If you love Tallahassee and history in general, I'd encourage you to come here at least once, if only to pick up a cold drink in the back coolers. In fact if they haven't just put the food in the warmer - I'd pass on all of it. I really think this place is struggling like anywhere else with a lack of good help. They used to be a 5 star for me but in the past year they really have lost some of that employee pride that shone through every interaction before. They still have great chicken and it's so worth the stop. Their produce is good too. I've never been disappointed with the quality. It's a smaller grocery store so they don't have everything we need all the time but for the most part they have what I need.

The best way to describe it is by saying that it is a "neighborhood store." It is not cookie cutter and doesn't appear to operate like the larger chains. The employees are a part of an ESOP (employee stock ownership plan) Food Giant's associates share a vested interest in helping the company to succeed. Food Giant Supermarkets operates 108 locations in eight southeastern states. The company's grocery stores comprise of several brands including Food Giant, Piggly Wiggly, Cost Plus, Pick 'n Save, Market Place, Sureway and Mad Butcher. Maybe you have heard some of these. I also noticed that these stores tend to be in smaller towns versus larger metropolitan areas. Thus, supporting this "neighborhood feel." This locations is medium to small in size. I don't think I could do a full grocery shop here, but I would definitely stop in to make a few purchases. I found the produce section to be a bit small and only have the basics as far as selection. I went one time looking for mint leaves and cilantro and didn't find either. There are pretty good deals on meat products. They also have a deli and bakery. There are some pre-cooked foods for purchase. Although I have not not personally tried the fried chicken, I've heard that it's really good. Food giant has early hours, a mobile app, accepts coupons and as weekly deals. It's definitely worth making a trip.
