I ripped a cartilage piercing once. It was super painful and I just wanted the earring cut out. The only place open is Pierced Utopia. Through almost tears I tell this to the woman at the counter and she tells me to wait because the piercer is shopping at Marshall's. So I wait for roughly 15 minutes before asking for an update. She said she didn't know and offered to cut it out herself which I would have LOVED for her to have offered when I walked in. She cuts it out, tries to upsell me on a re-pierce, then charges me $10. read more

First of all, I have never been to a piercing shop that has a "policy" where none of your family members or friends can come into the room where the piercing is happening. I came here to get a tongue piercing, and though they seemed to have a wide selection of body jewelry, from belly buttons to gauges and anything else you can think of- my piercing experience was far less enjoyable. The piercing itself was mostly painless, to my surprise, but before I even got it pierced I realized something was wrong. My piercer informed me I was tongue tied, but rather then recommend I get it snipped or get a different piercing, she went ahead with it anyway and resulted in what I can only call the most frustrating and painful four days of my life. The bottom of the bar was far too close to the tip of my tongue, it made it impossible to eat even soft foods and hit my teeth any time I spoke, which I expected, but along with that I had to curl and tense my tongue just to keep my mouth closed around the bar, which was far too short for a first piercing as well. The bar became the bane of my existence, and was continuing to bleed heavily right up until the moment I took it out. I know I did not wait the proper time, but even my friends who knew nothing about piercings knew that this was out of place. This piercing made my life a living hell, and had my piercer told me that this would happen, I never would have sat down to get it. All in all, I think this place is great for buying jewelry, and from what I can tell I'm sure they do a lovely job piercing ears, noses, etc. but from what I've read I'm not the only person to have an issue with a piercing from here, and therefor can't recommend it if you are looking for anything more then that. I've come to Pierced Utopia for all my piercings except for two. I've been pierced with a piercing gun on my ears (total of 6 times) and have been pierced with a needle on two areas of my body. I contracted a Staph infection from this location because of the unsanitary environment and instruments used during the procedure. I took very very good care of my naval piercing and for it to get infected after only a week is depressing to say the least. I visited the doctor and was advised to remove the piercing and given some antibiotics (oral and topical). I should have monitored the woman doing my piercings a bit more carefully to make sure I was in good hands. They also don't tell you what their earrings are made out of unless you ask so you're taking a risk coming here to get pierced without knowing what the jewelry is made of. If you do decide to go, make sure you ask for Darlene I believe her name is. I've heard wonderful things about her but I was unfortunate enough to be pierced by a novice instead. read more

The most unprofessional, unsanitary, incompetent "business" I've ever patronize. I should have walked out when the Piercer was puffing hookah and guzzling water In between clients! When I arrived, I informed the 12 year old receptionist I had an appointment. The music blasting profanity was so loud I had to repeat myself several times. I completed the required paperwork and the toddler made a copy of my id. She asked me to have a seat while the Piercer runs to Old Navy for pajama pants. Yes, true story. When the Piercer returned, she called me into the back room to be pierced. She did NOT wash her hands in front of me. She did NOT sanitize the recliner. The makeshift table that the equipment was on wasn't sanitized either. I asked if I could wash my hands? She responded, "my sink is broken. There's a leak inside the wall when the faucet is turned on." So of course I'm thinking, where the hell did YOU wash your hands?! The only plus side is that the Piercer was FAST. She pierced me in 3 seconds but left my ear dripping blood! Like running down my ear onto my shirt blood flow. The Piercer didn't give me any after care instructions, written or verbal. She simply said, "I noticed you have other piercings, you know how to care for this one right?" Needless to say I won't be returning there and I'm praying not to get an infection. Came in looking to buy a gauge since one of mine had fallen out and the other, was a screw back, which the back got stuck, and left me unable to get it out of my ear. I iterated this to the woman working and she recommended I come in the back so she could take a look. She tried a few different tools but none could unscrew the back of the gauge. So her and I together worked to squeeze the whole gauge out of my ear. It was painful and tedious but she persevered and got the gauge out. I wish I had caught her name but Im so thankful for her help, I had been trying to get it out for months! read more

I need to preface my review by saying--I don't make a habit of going around and writing reviews, positive or negative, for businesses. Before I say anything else: GO GET YOUR EARS PIERCED AT CLAIRES OR PIERCING PAGODA, OR SWALLOW THE COST AND GO TO A PROFESSIONAL BODY PIERCER IN BOSTON. I know we've been told that the piercing guns are bad, but believe me--it's better than Pierced Utopia. If you are strapped for cash, go to Claires/Piercing Pagoda; if you have the extra $20-30 per piercing, GO GET IT DONE PROFESSIONALLY. Pierced Utopia is NOT a professional piercing studio, at the very least not within the caliber of other businesses in the area you could go to. The teenager they have working the front desk is unbelievably surly and is the kind of person who deliberately messes with you: both times I tried to get piercings done at Pierced Utopia, she deliberately chose the wrong style of jewelry. Darlene is incredibly sweet, and I can't tell if the unprofessionalism was a consequence of Pierced Utopia or if it was something else, but I'm hesitant to blame Darlene for all my challenges at the store. That said, getting one of my body piercings done was genuinely one of the most painful piercings I've ever had done (and I've had quite a few of them). That piercing has since fallen out, partially because I did not receive the kind of jewelry I requested in the first place. I have spoken to others who have gotten piercings at Pierced Utopia with Darlene, and they have expressed that their piercing was also significantly more painful than they were expecting it to be. Despite the pain from my first piercing, I went back to try to get a second piercing, this time a typical ear piercing, and Darlene refused. My ears had been pierced around 10 years ago and I told Darlene this and asked her to help me get earrings through the holes. She refused. We went back and forth for a while--did I have a keloid? No. Were the holes closed up? Yes. Did they need to et repierced? Yes. Would she do it? No. She kept insisting to give me my second piercings instead--I was like, "Lady, I am going to pay you $50 to put in my earrings for me, and you're refusing?" I wound up asking for my money back. And I've thought about the experience ever since. I literally left Pierced Utopia, walked across the mall to Claires, and got my ears pierced by them the same day, with no complications. Pierced Utopia is absolutely NOT worth the cost and the pain when you can drive 20 miles south from here and have your pick of incredibly professional and talented body piercers in Boston. You can drive 20 miles north from here and have your pick of professional body piercers in New Hampshire for the price of Pierced Utopia. Pierced Utopia has a couple of hidden fees (they make you pay for the jewelry) and they really do not wind up being that much cheaper than the places down in Boston (the difference is like $20). Just go to a professional shop--this place is NOT WORTH IT. read more
