The epitome of an one stop shop. We we're heading back from the beach and decided to pop in to explore the area. They literally have everything you want and everything you didn't know you needed. Once you walk in a display of souvenirs are to the right and drinks take up the entire right wall. The souvenirs are similar to ones found at in the pier but way cheaper! You can make your own 6 pack, grab a case of beer, or food if you're missing some ingredients but don't feel like driving to the grocery store. The workers were also very nice and welcoming! 100% unfriendly store staff. Bought a sports drink for $3 this weekend, handed in a $20, and asked for $17 worth of lotto tickets to make up the difference. Simple. He messed up and when met with a simple 'heh, if there is a mistake I'll pay extra, no issues' was glared at and told 'stop it, you are being rude' and then the $20 was thrown back in my wife's face. Little known fact: These guys have an unsurpassed selection of canned microbrews complete with a mix & match 6-pack discount. This is a great neighborhood market -- and thanks goodness. The nearest grocery store is miles away. Pier Market is perfect primarily for two groups of people: 1. Anyone living nearby, including those renting space at one of the various hotels and 2. Beachgoers who want a quick, inexpensive something to munch. We go to San Clemente for fall break every year. We found the Pier Market the first year and we have a tradition to go back every year before we come home. We shop for home decorations, t shirts, sweat shirts, jewelry, hats, gifts for friends, Christmas ornaments, snacks...We are always treated well, always find great things and the prices are great! We also feel like they genuinely appreciate our business. They are always so helpful to the little ones in our group and take special care to package things well so they make the trip home. Im a fan of this place for a couple reasons. First. coming in on a late Feb. weekend, didnt expect sun so got some sunscreeen, band-aids for wifes bleeding heel, drinks, so they had everything you can want. need, or indulge all in a neatly organized, relatively small place. They even had towels for the beach but already got from the WM. Second, they DONT price gouge! A first for any convenience mart, especially located right across the beach. Prices are very fair across the board, so you dont feel like a dunce getting jipped like 7-11's or comparable places. Nice selection of drinks. I love people complaining about credit card minimum fee imposed. I mean, you really cant carry $5 to 10 bucks in your pocket in this city? Seriously, a homeless person will have more cash. Put yourself in the businesses shoes; they get charged left and right on every card transaction, regardless of little amount. Keep up good work, inventory, prices. read more

The only convenience store near the beach and Pier. My Lotto feigning husband, being from Vegas and all, bought 3 tickets here (only won 1 free ticket, wah wah). We purchased an energy drink and a souvenir for $2.99 (one of those small sand filled thingies) here. The store carries bundles of firewood for the pits along the beach, as well as your usual beach necessities like sunglasses and sand shovels. Also, for travelers like me who always forget something, the Pier Market carries just about everything you might need. I was expecting the pricing to be outrageous but it was reasonable enough. Customer service definitely needs to be improved, though. The cashier wasn't responsive or friendly. He had an attitude of "What do you want? Why are you bothering me?" going on. I went to this business with my 10 year old son to rent a surfboard. The reason why I had a terrible experience is because I was "basically" treated like trash bag or a criminal (per say) by someone who appeared to be either the owner or the general manager - this person was also mistreating the employees by ordering them around like if they were slaves or incapacitated individuals (these guys just take the abuse because they need the job obviously) They gave me a board that had a broken leash and when I went back to return it I asked for a partial refund but instead this abusive manager or owner accused me of braking the leash because I didn't come back to replace the board right after I rented it (I didn't because of the hassle of walking 5 blocks back and forth) - When I asked him why was he treating me this way he simply replied: "There is the door if you don't like it" (in front of other customers) In my 15 years living in the state of California I have never experienced such an ignorant and miserable human being like this guy behind a counter serving people - from judgement to racism I experienced everything in between - I believe this person should work at a prison abusing inmates which will fit his extreme sadness and awful existence in a more suitable way - as of now I will report this abuse to the state of California and also to the local authorities so they know who this person is in case something bad happens in the future. GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE! If you need some souvenirs in San Clemente this is the place to go. I bought a t-shirt and when we arrived home from our trip I realized it was too small. I was so disappointed because we had such great memories of our time there. I called and talked with the owner, Scott and he said it was no problem to exchange it for another size. I sent mine back and very promptly in the mail was the replacement. You don't get customer service like this anymore! I was so grateful to have my little remembrance of our trip. Sad to have to write a bad review today, but I was treated badly by one of the employees with my 3 year old doughter in my arms buying milk for our baby outside. We came into the store to buy milk and I walked down one of the tight isles with my daughter in my arms and unfortunately at the end of the isle there is a souvenir magnet display with magnets barley hanging onto it. I must have brushed up against the display as I walked down their tight isle with my daughter in my arms because one of the magnets fell off and broke. Here is the thing, I felt bad and I apologized. But the clerk FORCED me to pay for it. I told him I apologized and of course i did not mean to, BUT he then said "IT DIDNT JUMP OFF THE RACK". I then explained to him that the isles are unreasonably narrow, especially in a busy small beachfront store, and that they maybe shouldn't put a magnet display in such a tight isle. He ignored me, he didn't care, and he added the charge for the broken magnet to my credit card with my daughters milk. "We'll it didn't jump off the rack". I am shocked he said that, and then was forced to pay for it. I wish I got his name because that was so rude, and I hope the owners reads this. Maybe he was having a really bad day, but it has bothered me ever since and he shouldn't have said that. The CLERK who forced me to pay for it was an older (50's) bald white man, about 6' tall, with an average build. Average looking man in a green golf shirt with the stores name on it i think. I cant believe he did that. I won't ever shop there again. Rude P.S. I am 41 years old and can honestly say I have never bumped into something in a store my whole life, so i know this has more to do with a poor store display location in a narrow isle than me doing something carless in their store. read more

If you're at the beach or just walking around by the pier, this is the place to stop and pick up whatever you need. DON'T BOTHER - Walked in the other day. One dark hair older man sitting behind the counter a few feet away from the register. A hippie dude near the entrance with another guy designing a t-shirt or something.... not sure if they worked there. Approached the man behind the counter, who never looked up. I ask him for help 3 times and he ignored me all three times. Nothing. Thought he was deaf maybe or was there fixing a computer or security or something. He was deeply enthralled in what he was doing so I took a few steps left and stood in front of the register.... waiting calmly. After another minute or so the hippie dude turned out to be an employee and makes his way behind the counter but still talking to his friend. I'm in no rush, mention that I thought the other man worked there... at which point the older man looked over and said "what?!"... in a challenging what-did-you-say attitude. I said, "oh, I thought you worked here". Hippie dude said, "oh, that's the boss man". I quickly pieced it and them together. Even the "sorry" from the boss man seemed like he wanted to instigate or provoke something.. It's all good, I said. Maybe I interrupted him looking at some illicit stuff on his computer while hippie dude was on his break. Boss man appears to be one of those real jerks that was probably bullied as a kid and now getting back at society. Probably divorced and alone. Hippie dude more easy going but also needs to learn customer service etiquette. Clearly, neither wanted to be bothered. Don't bother giving them your business. Convenience they offer is not worth the venom these dudes dish out. read more

I was visiting San Clemente for several days and ventured out on foot and that is when I came across this little market within the shadows of the San Clemente Pier. I walked into this market simply wanting to play the lottery but found so much more. I found this market selling a great selection of wines (if you are a drinker, I am not), a large selection of beers, bottled spirits, basic food needs, several grocery store related items (canned foods, bottled water & Spam!!!) and of course beach related gear. I had been looking for a 'Sex Wax' air freshener and found it here=) Now if my vehicle did not already smell like 'surf wax' it definitely does now. The cashier working during my visit was super friendly and seemed to know a majority of the locals walking in and out of this market by name. If you are planning a train trip down the Coast from Los Angeles to San Diego this market is literally a 30 second walk or 15 second sprint from the train stop. So if you can time it perfectly like Kramer and the Gyro Subway stop you might be able to score some goodies for your trip. You figure a market so close to the Beach would charge outrageous prices for basic needs but you would be wrong. I found the prices here to be right on track with 7/11 and some large scale markets. This market is located extremely close to the Beach & the Ocean so please remember if you are reading this ensure whatever you bring to the Beach/Ocean you take home with you. Better yet use that bag you are given at the market to pick-up your trash and the trash that other left behind before it ends up in the Ocean. Help keep our Beaches clean and our Oceans Blue!!!! Little finds like this little market make me love San Clemente ever more than I already have. I walked in today to buy a water bottle, there were small glass bottles labeled "hand sanitizer" for $6.99, I thought how lucky to find, it's expensive but in these times it's hard to come by and I also don't mind giving extra money to a local business as we're from the area, so I decided to buy one! The man working the register even said "it's a spray bottle"...cool right?!...NOT!!!...as soon as I sprayed it in my hands you could smell the strong odor of perfume!...he sold me perfume! My fiance went in to return it and was told it was none refundable, the man then said "it has alcohol in it" and my fiance asked if it had 80% alcohol like the label stated? And the man said "that's the way they come, scented"...but the label said nothing of any odor in the ingredients. A few minutes later I was still upset that someone would scam people in a time like this, so I decided to just go back in and give him the bottle back, as we were not gonna use it. I asked him one more time if he wanted to return my money?...he then said that he could not! So I simply replied with "that's not cool what you're doing" and left him the perfume bottle. I hope that this man takes those bottles down & doesn't try to scam people anymore...and I hope that this will help other people not buy these fake hand sanitizers from this scam artist. I'm now home, have washed my hands 3 times and they still smell like cheap perfume! read more

I love mini-marts, and I love the beach. That makes Pier Market a perfect combination. Been vacationing in San Clemente for 30 years, and now I live here....and been coming to the Pier Market for those 30 years, every time I hang out on the beach. It's right across from the SC Pier---ergo the name, duh---perfect location, and has everything you need for a solid afternoon lounging on the sand. Plus all those little things you might have forgotten---sunscreen, magazines, little plastic sand buckets for the toddler. And---surprise--their prices are nowhere near as lofty as many quickie-marts with such great locations. Have stopped at Pier Market for over 20 years and have found that for the most part the help there is less than friendly. Can relate to Cassandra B's yelp. I get lottery tickets on a regular bases there. Have never redeimned them there until today. No one in store but me, clerk standing behind counter doing nothing and he cops an attitude about my 7 tickets he had to deal with. Told me how much he hates the lottery ?-that they don't make money on lottery transactions ?-Why he felt he needed to vent on me is puzzling--Over 40 years in grocery industry myself--I would have fired him on the spot-----No need for me to shop there again read more
