Took the Miner's Castle kayak trip this morning with Captain Katie as our guide and had a terrific time. So beautiful and we had a wonderful day for it. I highly recommend this!!;
Great experience! Took the 3:30p Ultimate Tour and giving kudos to the captain who expertly steered us through dense fog that sheeted the whole ride out. My guide, Elle, was wonderful and shared lots of helpful facts and stories along the paddle. She also offered to take pictures at different spots which was great since I was solo. I am very glad I decided to see the picture rocks this way since the fog prevented seeing them from the Miners Castle viewing decks in the National Park earlier that day and even from the water you could not see them at times until you got much closer to them.
Best and most convenient/organized kayak tour, ever! We were impressed with the knowledge, professionalism and friendliness of the staff, the cleanliness, comfort and the cool design of the boat. Another cool thing was how seamless they launched us from the boat into our kayaks. None of us got the slightest bit wet at any part of the tour. We had fun learning about the history of Lake Superior and the geology of the pictured rocks (I promise, it was fascinating!). AJ, our kayak guide, his name was AJ. AJ had a great sense of humor and kept us laughing. Note: I believe AJ was in a competition with the other guides (who were not nearly as awesome as AJ) I hope he gets extra credit for the number of times AJ appears in one review of AJ. We booked the Ultimate Kayak tour, it was about an hour boat ride out to the rocks, about a 3 hour kayak experience and another hour back. Make sure you bring your sunscreen, even if the temp is cool. There is a restroom onboard the boat, guides are able to radio the boat (as it follows the kayak groups) if someone needs to use the bathroom or needs to return to the boat for any reason. Also, it was so nice to see so much of the rocks and for the length of the kayaking it was one way, we never had to turn around and paddle back upstream. So smart! We highly recommend this tour!
We couldn't have asked for better weather or a better kayaking tour experience! Ajay was an incredible tour guide, knowledgeable, engaging, and genuinely funny which made the trip even more enjoyable. The pictures truly don't do this experience justice. If you're considering it, it's an absolute must-do. Captain Keith was fantastic as well, and the entire team made safety a top priority while ensuring everyone had an amazing time from start to finish.
Calvin J was a great guide! He was a good time and exceptional at karaoke! The waves were minimal so I felt safe kayaking. Sadly, they're not letting kayakers paddle under the arches or in caves this summer because the sandstone is degrading and falling.
We had an incredible experience on the Ultimate Kayak Tour with Pictured Rocks Kayaking! From start to finish, the entire crew was outstanding. The captain, deckhands, and guides were professional, friendly, and clearly committed to helping everyone have a great experience. A special shoutout to our guide, Valerie. She was absolutely fantastic. Our 11-year-old rode in her kayak, and Valerie did an amazing job making all of our kids (ages 7, 9, and 11) feel included, seen, heard, and part of the adventure. She was knowledgeable, entertaining, full of dad jokes, and kept the entire group engaged throughout the tour. She also took some incredible photos for our family! As parents, we really appreciated how Valerie connected with our kids and made them feel like they belonged. That small detail made a great experience truly memorable. One of the things we appreciated most was having the support boat nearby throughout the paddle. Knowing it was there if anyone needed assistance or a restroom break added an extra level of comfort and confidence, especially with younger kids. The kayaking itself was very manageable for our family, but what really set this experience apart were the views. Being in a kayak puts you right at the base of the cliffs, giving you an up-close perspective of Pictured Rocks that you simply can't get from one of the larger sightseeing cruises. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking. This was easily one of the highlights of our Upper Peninsula trip. We highly recommend Pictured Rocks Kayaking and would book with them again in a heartbeat!
This is just one of those experiences you realize you aren't going to forget as you're doing it. That's what makes it all the more important that you pick an organization that knows what they're doing. I have no experience with any of the other tour groups, but I definitely CAN say these guys were professional, fun, and knowledgable. Safety is their first priority, but their procedures and people are so good, and it's so well planned, that they CAN also make sure having fun is what you feel. The equipment was clearly VERY well cared for. We had an EXCELLENT time. We had the Ultimate package. The boatful of people gets broken up into 4 groups and each group had a group leader. All this really means is that you're in a small enough group that you're not only kayaking comfortably, but you can interact with and are able to hear your group leader give you the facts and history of the pictured rocks. It's clear they've been doing this long enough to know how to do it right.
This was a great experience. The staff was so helpful. We had Zach as our guide on the Ultimate Tour he was such a nice young man and was very knowledgeable and told us great stories about each of the formations. He also took pictures of us. Captain Keith also did a great job getting us back to the ock using the sonar/radar since visibility was bad due to the smoke from the wild fires. I can't wait to go again!
We did the long tour with Emily, and she took us to so many spots, it was magical and she gave us a bunch of fun stories and jokes. She even took photos of us and air-dropped them to us afterward. It rained in the morning but the water was calm. So cool launching kayaks from the boat.
Me and my wife went on this kayaking tour. Everything was taken care of and very thorough. Great for novice paddlers. The safety brief was very thorough. We went to Lake superior and paddled at a leisurely pace along pictured rock Lakeshore. Our guide was Sam. He did a great job with everyone and explained all the different sites and pointed out different birds that were along the coast. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming. I recommend this trip to get an up close and personal experience along this Lakeshore. You guys need to give Sam a raise.
-- A Bucket-List Experience That Photos Can't Capture Date of Visit: July 21, 2025 If you're even thinking about visiting Munising, MI or the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore -- stop thinking and book with Pictured Rocks Kayaking (@picturedrockskayaking). Our family (my wife, our 15-year-old daughter, and me) did the boat-assisted morning tour on a calm July day, and it was one of the most unforgettable outdoor experiences we've ever had. We've kayaked before (including at Acadia National Park), but nothing compares to this. From Chapel Rock and Lover's Leap to the hidden sea caves, every bend of shoreline revealed a new natural wonder. Photos don't do this place justice -- it's something you truly have to experience firsthand from the seat of a kayak. And our guide? Julia Illy (@JuliaIlly) was phenomenal. She struck the perfect balance between safety-first leadership and fun, filling the journey with geological insights, local history, and witty humor that made the paddle fly by. You can tell she loves what she does and cares about giving people a meaningful, memorable trip. The whole operation is smooth and professional -- from the boat ride out (big energy saver!) to the gear, support team, and route design. Whether you're new to kayaking or a seasoned paddler, this is a can't-miss Michigan adventure. We'll remember this day forever. Huge thanks to the team -- and to Julia, who truly rocks (in every sense of the word ).

An AMAZING EXPERIENCED!!! Ive never kayak before, however this was in my bucket list. Bobby our guide helped my daughter and I after seeing that we were struggling. He was so patient, and gladly helped us gain the confidence we needed to do it ourselves. Thank you for the wonderful experience and support, we're definitely coming back with the rest of our family. Everything was breathtaking and beautiful. read more
This was such an amazing tour! Getting up close and personal with this beautiful shore line was breathtaking. The tour we took was 5 hours, we took about an hour boat ride, then loaded into our kayaks and split up into smaller groups of about 5 to 6 kayaks. The kayak trip last about 2 hours, with our guide who gave us lots of information about the different rock formations and it's history. The entire crew was very accommodating and personable. read more

Excellent location, perfect for beginners but tedious if you are experienced. 3 hour trip means 1-1/2 hour paddle including enforced waiting around for other groups to catch up, and 1 hour in tight quarters waiting for slower groups to load in to the boat. Guides are sweet but go on and on about themselves in a self involved way as opposed to talking about the location. Bring food for the trio back so you don't get hangry. Request to tip was a bit much, not a guided tour so much as a limit on how much you can kayak when you get out there l. This review is 2-1/2 stars read more

100/10 would recommend this company! My husband and I did the 5 hour Ultimate Tour. Having the boat near by the whole time gave me peace of mind. Before boarding the boat they handed out safety equipment and went through safety and basic paddling instructions. The entire staff was kind and helpful. I had major anxiety about getting in and out of my kayak but the kayak launch onboard the boat made things easier and everyone offered a helping hand. Cara was our guide. She was phenomenal! She took the time to interact with each kayak in our group. She is very knowledgeable about Pictured Rocks and the area. Offered restaurant recommendations as well. read more

Online description was accurate. Boat ride to kayaking point was great--maximized scenic kayaking time. They had to cancel initial appointment due to unsafe weather conditions, but quickly rescheduled us for a day later. Staff very friendly. About 2.5 hours in the kayaks was great for us amateurs. read more

Beautiful tour, we paddled 5 miles along the shore. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and very fun. My 87 year old grandma got in a kayak and joined, the entire crew was so helpful to make sure she could get in and out of the kayak. Definitely would do this tour again!! read more
We loved this trip! This was an amazing way to see pictured rocks! The staff on this trip was so helpful kind! I can't remember our guide's name but he was interested in bird watching. He had a TON of knowledge at about birds and pointed out some amazing wildlife along the way. My favorite part of the trip was kayaking through the tunnels. We were last off on the boat and last on. The kayaking was an excellent way to experience the park with having to kayak too far. In addition, it was so cool to be able to have the boat near by in the event you need assistance. It made us feel safe. The boat is really clean and new. The loading experience is really cool. They pull the jay sky's down from the top of the boat and use a floating dock to get you out. It was great and made me feel really safe. I was really thankful for that experience. read more

We did it! Total beginner kayaker here and we paddled the whole 5 miles along pictures rocks - it was amazing! I feel like we got really lucky with the weather as it can change quickly, but it couldn't have been more perfect. The staff were all super knowledgeable, friendly, and fun. Would highly recommend to anyone who wants an experience of a lifetime. read more
Absolutely AMAZING. Captain John did a great job getting everyone safely too and from the kayaking area. The guides were incrrdubor as well. Jesse deserves a RAISE! Awesome dude who did an outstanding job with everyone. Got some incredible pictures and had some fun discussions along our 5 mile journey. Wear shoes/water shoes and if you're new asknfornyge rudder! Also wear long sleeves and/or a hoodie (even during the summer) it gets chilly on the lake. read more

High winds and rough water meant our tour was switched at the last minute to the alternate Grand Island tour at a discounted rate. The tour was excellent even with the switch. We got up close to beautiful rock formations and our guide, Courtney, was great. And Captain Harry kept us all safe and sound. A great organization -- hope we can come back someday for the Pictured Rocks version! read more

Our group experienced rough waters and missed the PR tour but got to paddle Grand Island along with receiving some money back. Even though we missed Pictured Rocks, Grand Island was just as beautiful. We had "Adventure Vinnie" as our tour guide and he took our group through the tighter rock areas, waterfalls and caves that really test your paddle skills and made the day even more fun. Launching from the boat means you have an added layer of safety and you get to see more without having to turn around and go back. I highly recommend the Ultimate tour (or Unexpected Tour)! Thanks for a great day! ** It's always important to remember that Munising Bay can look calm and Lake Superior can be completely different at the cliffs. The weather can turn at any moment like it did for us.** read more

First 1 star review I've left. I recognize I am not a business owner, but the way our trip was handled was very unfortunate. I called an hour before to ask about lunch, no mention of a possible cancellation. We arrive at check-in time to be told all tours are cancelled due to bad weather and high winds - it was 86 and sunny, not a cloud in the sky. A light breeze at times near the shore, but it looked pretty calm out there. The lack of communication and abrupt cancellation with no alternate routes (as mentioned on their site) was a major disappointment. We had driven 7 hours for this for my husband's birthday. They did provide an immediate refund and recommended the boat cruise down the street. When booking the cruise, the team was surprised to hear of the cancellation - it was truly a perfect sunny day in the UP (rare). What was even more surprising was seeing about 50 tandem kayakers at the rocks while on our cruise. We're guessing the competitors across the street went for it. And the kayakers were having no trouble at all, it was very calm waters (and in a tandem much less likely to flip). I recognize there are liabilities involved but your cancellation policy seems a bit over cautious. People travel long distances for this. A wait and see policy makes more sense IMO. Ultimately, my question is: if a cloudless scorching hot day isn't good kayaking weather, what is up there? I recommend checking out the place across the street, or others in town who have more flexibility. Even our boat captain himself said the wind was more on land and we "lucked out" with this gorgeous weather. read more

PRK provided us with an incredible experience! We took the Ultimate Tour. This company is wonderful, the safety demonstrations were great, they provided equipment that was in great shape, our Captain Harry was fun and informative, and the guides all had great energy. Our guide, Vinny, was so much fun, he was very good at explaining everything we were seeing and the history of the area. He was adventurous and encouraged our group to be also but only to your comfort level. Vinny took pictures of everyone in our group and shared them with us, it was a nice personal touch. We loved him and he really made this experience over the top for us. It was a 10/10 experience for us. If you are considering this company go for it, you will not be disappointed. read more

I am not usually one to leave reviews (this is my first), but I had no choice but to do so with this company! Let me start off by saying that we were not able to kayak on the rocks, as the conditions were bad on the water. They offer an alternate route of paddling Grand Island, which we took advantage of. Despite not being able to see the Pictured Rocks like we'd hoped, we still had a wonderful time around the island. Jordan (very knowledgeable) was one of the guides on the trip and explained everything in depth while still allowing it to be a relaxing trip. They do take you out on a boat, which stays within close proximity of kayakers for added comfort. I will add that at one point the wind picked up and the water became fairly wavy. Various people became sea-sick and one tandem kayak tipped over. The crew was excellent at handling the situation, but I have to especially commend Jordan, as he was calm and composed and did an excellent job communicating with people to ensure everyone was comfortable. I would recommend this for anyone considering!! read more
