Great group! Completely hospitable and chill at the same time. We came during the COVID pandemic. As we waited on the doc, we were able to clearly see the staff on the boat patiently sanitizing the entire boat down. They were thorough from the looks of it. They made the mask rules very clear (and they enforced it!). They also limited their size the required 50%. Which of course hurts the tourist industry, but their level of professionalism and customer service remained the same. I was really impressed and happy to tip after. I recommend everyone going through them! Also they told funny jokes. With that said, my first time visiting Pictured Rocks. Definitely the highlight of the trip! read more

I wholeheartedly encourage you to take this cruise! We opted for the 2-hour sunset cruise. The boat is large and comfortable. There are amazing views of the rocks from both the upper deck, open air seating or the main deck inside seating. It's northern Michigan so even in July, it can be cold in the evening so if you are doing the sunset cruise, dress accordingly and I'd suggest bringing a blanket! You are also able to bring drinks and snacks which is nice. There do sell water and soda aboard if needed. The scenery is amazing! The captain also tells you a lot about what you are seeing and is a great mix of informative and funny. On the way out, the rocks are on the right and on the way back on the left. At several of the main sights, they turn the boat so both sides get a great view. Even if you've been in this area many times, I highly suggest this cruise. The best stuff: Pictured Rocks Express is a wide comfortable boat with excellent seating. The staff, from the ticket office to Captain Zach, were excellent. We would eagerly book another trip when in the area. The poor stuff: Guests who are oblivious to others and refused to follow announced rules. Apparently while others stood in line for up to an hour, it was ok for two people to allow friends to line jump or save seats for late arrivals once aboard. The no standing rule needs to be posted in multiple languages. read more

They take you on a boat tour that lasts a few hours and shows the best geologic features of the park while giving history and interesting facts along the way. We did the splash falls cruise and had a good time. Sit as high as you can and on the right. With covid, they run every other row. We had our masks, but not required. The cruise was good, entertaining, and a good price. We learned a bit about the area and found spots to check out on our own later, like miners beach and miners castle. There was a part where we drove into a cove, and the kids were enjoying it a lot. The views are pretty good and it just reminded me of Arches in Utah and and a bit of Colorado (obviously a different intensity though). The captain was funny with his narrations. We took the 2 hour sunset cruise and The day we were booked for was a bit cloudy and a storm rolled through about an hour before we left for the tour, but it ended up being an a absolutely beautiful night. The sun setting and shining on the rocks was breathtaking. Was easy to park. Ticketing was very expensive, $48 per adult. We had a 4-year-old autistic child and they charged $12. Prior to boarding, they make you wait in a corral with no place to sit down. Very difficult for someone with sciatic nerve damage in their hip. Stood in pain for 45 minutes. After boarding and taking off, they seemed rushed as they got near the good spots. Also, they could have navigated a little closer. You could tell they wanted to hurry up and get home. The lake, pictured rocks, waterfall were very beautiful. Loved the Cruise, but loath the people standing from the upper deck and blocking the view. I don't want to name who they are, but soon you will figure out. I appreciate the crew of the ship for going up the higher deck and advice these people to be seated. Some of the passengers invade your personal space by standing in front of you and take pictures without saying excuse me. For $45 per adult ticket, I guess these people want more from it ;-( Anyways, I felt amazed by the rock formation! Very colorful rocks with a lot of stories to be told for each layer and location. It's like seeing the Grand Canyon, but Pictured Rock is surrounded by the deep waters of Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Our cruise left the port just a few minutes after the scheduled departure. The ship came back safely to shore after 2 hours. The captain was named Zach. He brightened our day by narrating the history of the rocks with a good sense of humor. He advised the best seats will be at the right side of the ship. Don't fret if you didn't get the right seat. At the end of the route, the captain will turn around to the left side of the boat so the other side can see. So much effort for the people standing and blocking the view of others. To avoid distractions, best to seat at the right or left side and at the end/back either the upper open deck or lower deck. The best thing to do during the tour is to remain seated, chillax and be amused to the narration of Captain Zach! read more

We took the sunset cruise and had hoped to see some glistening color from the sun reflecting on the rocks but it was a cloudy evening. We thoroughly enjoyed the cruise and the unique rock formations any way! I must add that Pictured Rocks are on the Michigan commemorative national parks coin. It is a beautiful wonder and we are so glad we took the trip. The captain narrated along the way and cracked a few corny jokes. Masks are required though seats were not blocked off. They are running at half capacity so there is plenty of space to distance. I saw the crew reminding some people to keep their masks in place. Drinks are available for $1.00 ( water and soda) or bring your own. The sunset cruise travels along the rocks and the captain turns the boat several times so each side can have a fantastic view. At Splash Falls the boat heads back to port, making the trip 1 hr and 50 minutes. $45 pp read more

Like not even close, it was far off in the distance that they pointed it out to us, but that's okay, the cruise was still something interesting to do with a very large group. On the way out, the narrative was good. Informative and funny. Once into the cruise, not so much. And on the return trip, it was like a horse gone stable crazy! The captain was going so fast that we had to wait outside the harbor for it to clear since he was 15+ minutes early. No narrative. You need to treat both sides of the boat with the same respect. Short on Time for Kayaking hence chose the Classic Trip($38/Person) on the Cruise for 2.5 hr. Reached around 9.30 am and got the tickets and stood in the line Boarded around 9.45 am and left the dock at 10 am. Definitely a good choice because the staff are very cordial and fun.They even warned about the rough weather and about expecting 8 feet waves but after 1.5 hr the lake superior became rough and waves were above 8 feet.So they had to cut the trip short but mentioned they would do a half refund. Pictured Rocks is a beautiful display of amazing rock formations that you cannot see anywhere else and the only way to see them is from the water. This was a nice tour of Pictured Rocks with ample opportunity to get some amazing photos. The captain told a bit of names, history, geology and local stories about the rocks and the lake. I will never book a cruise from them again. I bought tickets when their schedule first came out in January 2023, because they advise you to pre-book ahead. Our trip was canceled the first weekend in October 2023 due to weather, which I can understand; although their communication could have been better about the potential of the canceled trip, we didn't find out until late the evening before it was canceled and we were planning on driving 4+ hours. All communication that was given to me stated I would receive a refund back to my credit card. 14 days went by, and nothing appeared on my card statement, so I called their office to follow up. When I first called, the woman on the phone had no idea how to help me. She took my name number, and situation and said someone would get back to me Monday when the woman who handles it is back in the office. I called back a week later and finally talked to someone who could "help me". She at first told me I needed to take this up with my credit card company, and when I asked if there was a reference number or any details on their end that she could provide me to give my CC more details on the refund. She finally THEN actually looked at my account and informed me that because I bought my tickets so early they couldn't refund me on my credit card, so they would be sending me 2 checks in the mail for my two orders. She informed me that one of the checks was sent to a former address (no one called me to confirm that was still my current mailing address, which it no longer was so it's lost in the mail) several weeks prior -- I never received it even through mail forwarding. I was then informed that a check had to be written for the second order I made, which was according to the woman I talked to, was written and put in the mail on October 20th. It's now November 6th and I have not received ANYTHING. I tried calling their office but they are "temporarily closed" for the season and their voicemail requires an access code to leave a message, so I can't even leave a voicemail. I've sent emails as well and nothing back. I even sent them a message on Facebook which shows me they read my message and they are choosing not to respond to me. DO NOT BOOK WITH THEM. I have a feeling I will not be getting my $400 back at this point because they are unorganized and unprofessional. And if you have policies regarding how you refund you should make that more clear because if I had not followed up, no one would have sent me anything! Their communication is AWFUL. read more

This was awesome!!! Such a smooth boat ride with hundreds of memorable pictures. Boat was clean, staff was friendly, and the views were incredible. It rained slightly in the beginning, but downstairs was covered, and we had just as much of a good view in the rain as the sun. If it's a sunny/bright day and you happen to be up and around the UP of Michigan, I highly recommend taking this cruise to see the stunning rock formations and colorations if you haven't already. If you just arrived in the area and plan on hiking but you're unsure where, start here. It will give you an overview of places you can potentially explore! If you're weary from hiking and want a scenic boat tour after consuming a large amount of food, this is a great experience. The staff was super friendly and informative through the tour, and if I happen to be up in the UP with new comers, I'm taking them here! TIPS: - get in line 30 mins early to secure a seat on the side of the boats. It's worth it. - make sure there is some sun in the sky (preferably not too cloudy) so the colors of the rocks and the water is picture perfect. - secure those hats and if you're on the top deck, wear some sunglasses (really from the wind). - book tickets in advanced-- although it's a small town and you don't really see the visitors, they will come swarming into line. read more

Great cruise with an informative, entertaining captain, clean boat, safe sail, and beautiful scenery. I appreciated the advice to line up early. We got in line 50 minutes before departure, and were probably 20 people back from the front. The first cruises had been affected by dense fog, and the last by thunderstorms. There's no shade in line, so an umbrella was nice to shade the sun during our near hour wait. Top deck, right side was great for viewing on the way out. On the way back, the rear lower deck was also nice to photos because they slowed down at the major sites again. read more

My husband and I had hoped to do some kayaking along the Picture Rocks shoreline but we were short on time so we decided to do the Pictured Rocks cruise instead to take in the full majesty of the coastline. No regrets about this decision! We love a good sunset so we decided on the sunset cruise which was stunning. The light heading out to the the shore and then back was drastically different and made for some really lovely photos. The shoreline is just incredible and it's definitely worth visiting sometime if you're able. The tour guides share some interesting facts about the coast and the region but they're not overly chatty, which I appreciate. Seating is first come, first serve so be sure to show up early if you want a seat the top and on the outside of the boat for the best view. Due to some traveling we got there a little later and ended up on the inside of the top. Luckily they do have a deck in the back of the boat on the lower level where you can stand during the tour, so we made our way there to get the best views of the shore. But that does mean standing for 2+ hours so if you don't want to do that, then be sure to get there early. Lake Superior is the roughest of all the lakes (hello shipwrecks) so each trip is a bit of a crap shoot. Luckily for me and my very low threshold motion sickness we had very calm waters that day. But I definitely took a Dramamine just in case! Also, if you go earlier in the day be sure to slather on the sunscreen because in the middle of the waters there is no shade. Worth every penny for the tour. Would definitely do it again. read more

The perfect way to experience pictures rocks with kids or others who may not walk to hike. I've done both and while hiking the 10 miles was well worth it, Pictures Rocks Cruises gave me a whole new appreciation for the beauty of Munising. I bought the tickets well in advance as I read they frequently fill up. The captain and crew were unparalleled in professionalism and kindness. They do have some snacks and drinks (non alcoholic) for purchase on board but we brought some food for us and our kids. The ride out we sat on the land facing side so everyone in our party was engaged with the scenery. Then, on the way back, I did have to do some entertaining in the cabin. It was about 2 hours and we took the Spray Falls cruise which allowed us to see a waterfall a little closer. The pictures I took are excellent but the cruise itself was breathtaking. It was so great to be up close to the cliffs. Hiking is unforgettable and do it if you can't, but if you're unable or looking for a different point of view, Pictured Ricks Cruises is worth every penny! read more

If you're visiting the picturesque Upper Peninsula, a tour of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore should be on your list of things to do. Leaving from Munistique several times a day, this is the best way to experience Lake Superior and the beautiful natural formations along its south shore. The tours are rain or shine. On the day of our tour (we opted for the Spray Falls one), a huge storm was predicted for the time of our cruise, and all earlier cruises were sold out. Thankfully, the company is very generous in allowing rescheduling, so we bumped to the next day. Good thing, because it was a perfect warm, sunny day and we ended up having an excellent view of the lake and the rock formations. The guide was both informative and entertaining, and the two and a half hours flew by as we cruised along the lakeshore and took in the views and learned the history of the area. Seats are comfortable, first-come-first-served (so arrive about early to grab a good one!) and remember to bring a hat and/or sunscreen if you plan to sit on the top deck. They get you up close as they can to the majestic views of the Pictured Rocks frontier! Considering how ferocious Lake Superior can be this is just a great way to get great views of Pictured Rocks a s a whole. The tour guide was a bit cheesy but truly entertaining and informative. It's awesome to hike and get boots on the ground to see this area but to get the scenic tourist all around view, this is the best way to go. Get there early because the boat fills up in a hurry. The cruise was amazing! We went on a Thursday evening (5pm cruise). Zach was our captain. He was funny (with some good cheesy jokes) and informative. You can line up for the cruise an hour before. We got there a bit late, 4:30, and there was quite a line. Because if this we weren't able to get seats on the top, but we had a nice window seat on the inside that still offered great views. If you are dead set on a side top seat I recommend getting there right when you can line up. read more

My husband & I had 2p cruise tickets on Sept 15. Just before boarding they announced that the waters were a bit rough & they may not get through the whole tour. Also, if you aren't a rollercoaster person, you may not want to go out. They offered a full refund to us as we chose not to go. My 1st time seeing Pictured Rocks and it was spectacular! The boats have pretty comfortable bench seats with large windows that slide open. The captains (there were 3 of them) were very informative and narrating all of the points of interest and there were a lot of them! We sat inside the cabin, since my hip didn't like the idea of climbing the stairs to sit on the top deck. I think the view would have been far more beautiful . I also do t know if we would have been able to hear the narration. I think I might take this cruise again for the pictures. Maybe at sunset ... If you haven't visited the Pictured Rocks, do it! read more

Think you need to blow the bank and travel to Australia, England, Iceland or the Med to see stunning arches, rocks named after apostles, multicolored geological strata and brightly colored manganese, copper, calcium, mineral streaks? Think no more! It's all here in Michigan in the great US of A! Pictured Rocks are a must and not just from the road or trail side. To get the full view and experience the full splendor of this shoreline, you must go by boat. Canoe, Kayak or cruise. We chose cruise. Captain Jayden, John and Taylor were our crew on board the lovely new Chapel Rock. She set sail in 2019 and is still lovely and shiny. The crew are all Covid-conscious, wearing masks, requiring masks the entire journey, spraying sanitizer on the seats and railings in between each sailings. All around A+ for covid hygiene. Tips? We took the 11am sailing and at this time of year (fall) we were looking and taking photos into the sun, so very few came out and non to their full potential. Take the afternoon cruise. Right or left doesn't seem to matter too much as we sat starboard side on advice from previous reviews only to find our great Cap'n, sailed right up against the shoreline on the return trip too, so folks on the port side were equally well seated. read more

The scenery is stunning. I do recommend getting in line early so you can get a good seat and make sure you sit on the starboard side. Going out all the scenery is on that side and the captain spends a good deal of time talking about what you're seeing. I made the mistake of sitting on the port side. When the boat turns around the port side gets to look at stuff but the captain patter is pretty sparse and the time you get to view the formations is shorter. So- sit on the starboard side! To get decent photos you do have to stand but beware of Katrina, she'll be right there to tell you to sit down. Not sure how long they feel it's safe to stand to take your photo but Katrina is pretty quick in telling you to sit. It was a bit frustrating. All in all I highly recommend it! read more
