My family and I were visiting some friends in the area and decided to stop in to grab lunch before arriving. When I walked inside, I saw so many delicious looking options inside the deli case. I had a difficult time deciding but ultimately went with a Corned Beef and Pastrami Combo. The sandwich was huge (I split it with my mom) and the meat was super tender. The rye bread was super soft and pillowy. I was really happy with my choice. There's some diner-style seating inside but we were in a bit of a rush so we took our food to go. Service was really friendly and welcoming. Will definitely be back if I am in the area and would love to try some of their other dishes. Corned Beef and Pastrami Combo: 5/5 read more

Another fantastic meal at the pickled herring. Felt like something different today and had the open roasted turkey sandwich. Incredible, turkey gravy was fresh and had bits of turkey in it! Wow. Onion rings were also 10/10. Service was stellar as Mark with a K is the best in the biz! Must go if you want authentic Jewish deli in central nj. read more

I'm completely shocked. I ordered a matzo ball soup. It was delivered without the soup ! I am speechless. How do you send a soup out without the soup!??? I can't explain it read more

Great Corned Beef!! Probably second best corned beef in Nj to Harold's. Fresh, tender and juicy meat, and not stacked so high that you can't eat it! Though I was full after eating half but made great leftover the next day. Took one star away because I was disappointed by the Cole slaw side. It just didn't taste as fresh or flavorful as I would have expected. Pickles were good. Definitely will be going back again when in the area!!! read more

You know I really like this place but there's one thing the bugs the heck out of me. I VERY RARELY give any place a 5 star and I would have given this place a 4 Star which is my ultimate rating. Maybe it's me but the Rye bread on the hot pastrami sandwiches are cut too thin. When the pastrami is nice and hot it can make the bread so soft that it doesn't hold up like it should. The bread needs substance. Other than that service is very good, menu selection is great, food comes out delicious. An 1/8- 1/4 inch thicker bread would do the trick. That's my opinion. read more

waiter was excellent as always. the male by the cashier, who I presumed may have been one of the owners was another story. We just finished dinner spent just about $200.00 . We then ordered an item to go for $15.00 which he put in a paper bag . We asked for a plastic bag and he raised his voice telling me we already had a bag with our leftovers . The same was completely full. Obnoxious would be too kind. He admonished me telling me these bags are 15 cents. I said but I come here all the time, I just had dinner here. I am am attorney. I dont have time for nonsense. I never write a negative review, but this guy's behavior was simply unacceptable. Moreover, if he was the owner then for shame on him . Just lost two good customers over stupidity. I just don't get it. When did customer service cease and stupidity take control. read more

Hubs and I have been wanting to give this place a try but we keep forgetting about it. We finally remembered as we were driving by and decided to stop here on our way to Costco. We were immediately seated after arriving and ordered the following: Bowl of Mushroom Barley Soup- this was delicious. Hubs missed it and haven't had it for a long time. It was nice and thick. Homemade sweet potato knish- . This was surprisingly good and sweet. It reminded him of knishes from NYC, except it was puffier and fluffier. Potato Pancake- this was ok. Hubs had latkes in mind and was surprised that this was literally a pancake. Hot Pastrami Sandwich- this was pretty soft and flavorful. We had a choice of salad and chose cucumber salad. It was nice, light and refreshing. I got a 7 layer cake slice to go and was very disappointed with this. I found out it's made with margarine and I guess I'm not a margarine fan. We saw a sign that had salmon tips for 7.99/lb. Service was friendly and quick. Will return next time for dinner! read more

Service . For a restaurant that has such a 5 star reputation for outstanding food the service and disturbing attitude of the staff behind the counter is appalling! I was never treated so poorly. They was the tall stocky guy with a salt and pepper grey beard who gets annoyed and gets very nasty at everything asked of him to get by a customer. Not a great way to keep your customers especially with the prices they charge thankfully the food speaks for itself. Outstanding and extremely delicious. I've remembered this business from when it was bagel nook . I go way back for many years . To come back after many years to be treated as I was I might just drive to Clark nj where I am treated with respect. read more

Mark was a spectacular server. So personable and attentive. Can't wait to be served by him the next Wednesday or Friday that we come in!

We did a private party in the back room here for a birthday for about 25 people. The staff was amazing and the food was great. They really give you a lot for your money. We were very happy and would absolutely do another party here. read more

We frequent this restaurant however, lately the owner and counter staff are less than a pleasure to deal with. We always place large takeout orders, but this time I ran in for a sandwich and a few other items for my elderly mother. One of the items I ordered was a corned beef sandwich. I was t certain what was included so I inquired if the very small container of coleslaw came with it because I know mom likes that. The bald, older man behind the counter rudely said "no it is not included with the order." It wasn't what he said, it was how he said it. It was as if he was doing me a favor taking my order. Not for nothing but this container is no larger than a 25 cent piece and if he were a smart businessman, he would have been more than happy to just throw it in. I had a very substantial order and I'm certain he made enough money off of this order to include it. In any event, I didn't expect it for free. I can eat anywhere with my money so this is their loss. Fred and Murray's is always pleasant and never rude. You guys just lost a good customer for a few strands of coleslaw ~ enjoy it yourselves! read more

My wife and I last night were in the mood for deli, so decided to go to Pickled Herring. Arrived about 5:45pm, restaurant was not busy, we asked to sit at a table and they walk us to the back. Usually when you sit down a few mins late they bring over water and pickles- none. Looking at the menu a couple sits down next to us that staff seems to know well. Immediately they get water and pickles. We ask the waitress and she goes and fetches them, no sorry, nothing. Not really a big deal, but part of the overall story. We order, my wife and I both have soup- mushroom for her, matzoh ball for me. She orders a pastrami on rye, I ordered a brisket on rye and we share a potato pancake. Soup is fine, meal comes out. I am about 1/2 way through the first half of my sandwich when I discover a hair in it! I call the waitress, who says "ok, want me to ask them to remake it, or would you like something else?" I opted for a turkey on rye instead. A few mins later another woman brings over the sandwich and says "not sure how that got in there, all the guys in the back are bald" and walks away. I felt as if she was insinuating I somehow put a hair in my sandwich. Never "we sorry this happened", nothing. The bill comes and they charged me for the sandwich! really? Ok, at least comp a soup, or the 2 Dr. Browns sodas, something. Nope, Nothing and not a word from anyone again about the incident, no apologies, as if it never happened. I have read other reviews about the staff being rude. 100% true, one of the reasons why we don't go there as often as we would like. Staff is generally curt with customers, especially the ladies by the front register. It will be a long time before we go back. read more

This place was a throwback for me as I was a former deli counter worker. Busy place and fast service. Everybody pitched in to pull a larger order of takeout on their delicious looking food. Loved getting the new pickles. That's the mark of a pIace I want to eat at. read more

The Pickled Herring - Hot Pastrami Sandwich - Delis Near Me - Englishtown, New Jersey

Located in a strip center, this quaint little restaurant welcomes you with a warm greeting from the ladies behind the counter as soon as you walk in. You can choose to dine in or, like us, opt for takeout. There were four of us ordering, and the four guys working the counter were incredibly efficient--everyone jumped in to help, so we had our order ready in no time. Once they prepare your food, it's placed in a basket and handed to the ladies at the register, where you're conveniently tempted by their homemade desserts right next to the counter--hard to resist a little impulse buy . We took home corned beef, egg salad, and salami sandwiches, along with a sweet potato knish, a sweet noodle kugel, rugelach, and a slice of 7-layer cake. The corned beef was tender and full of flavor, and the egg salad had nice-sized chunks of egg with just the right amount of mayo. It's also great that it's kosher-style, so you can still enjoy cheese on your sandwich! The knish was huge and packed with delicious sweet potato filling, and the kugel tasted just like my grandma's. The cake and cookies were the perfect sweet finish. So excited to have found a kosher-style deli that's even better than some in NYC! read more

WOW! Excellence beyond expectations. When we entered, we noted it was bustling with customers. We had the chicken salad sandwich and hot corned beef sandwich. We also ordered the barley soup and a side order of kasha. The sandwiches were nicely packed. The soup was full of mushrooms and tasty. The kasha was like grandma would make. The gravy added a nice flavor. The service was attentive to needs. Sooo full and content!! If you are even 1hr away you OWE it to yourself to try here. Waddling out as we speak. read more

I've been to the Pickled Herring many times. The food is really just okay - I keep returning as it's only 5 minutes from where I live. My go to meal is a pastrami on rye and a side of fries. The fries are very good. The pastrami is a bit on the bland side. If you eat in the restaurant you get a side of coleslaw included. If the sandwich is to go you have to add it to the order (about $2 for a tiny side cup). The coleslaw dressing is quite thin (it's not creamy enough). Prices are good. Fred and Murray's is a much better choice, but at a higher cost (Fred and Murray's is also kosher). read more

I truly do not know how they can receive five stars on any point. The service behind the counter is horrible. The workers are nasty, especially the cashiers and the food is ok. I truly think the attitudes of the people there are the biggest problem. read more

It was my first time there, and I have no intention of going back. The way they speak to the younger employees is revolting. Everyone in there is a senior citizen. The man, who wears glasses, has white hair and a beard, is extremely disrespectful to one of the guys, who's probably in his 20s, behind the deli. I spoke with him and said that he really shouldn't be screaming like that in front of customers and his employees; he was also rude towards me. I will not be going back there. read more

The Pickled Herring - Mac and Bri Roll. - Delis Near Me - Englishtown, New Jersey

Food is excellent but should do a machine with number calling for deli takeout because 2 people cut in front of me because setup is not organized. Pastrami sandwich done right away but had to wait awhile for my onion rings. Counter where you pay the one woman a little rude had to ask for an extra mayo and gave me a hard time when I asked for plastic knife so I could spread on sandwich. In fact I had to say what do you expect me to use my finger. Also when they make your sandwich to go their back is to you so you can't see your sandwich. So for a pastrami on rye with onion rings came to $28.40. Also charged the 3 percent for using credit card. But must say was all delicious. Just a few kinks that I mentioned could improve the takeout deli counter and to pay for counter. read more

This has to be my favorite restaurant in the whole world. Love the food and choices. I would go there every day if I could.

We are regulars at this establishment, and the food never dissapoints. They make excellent kreplach, and the kreplach soup reminds one of Grandma's :) Great burgers, great knishs's. The pastrami is good, but Ive been to Katz's many times, and I judge any pastrami I eat by the Katz's quality. So Ill say, it's good pastrami, but not Katz's. Good brisket. They also make a french dip sandwich that is excellent, roast beef and provolone, with Au Jus on the side. Very Good. Brisket Knish...AWESOME. If youre in the mood for good deli, highly recommended. They do get busy and or crowded, so depending on the time you might have to wait for a table. read more

I went back and picked up a few items for Mother's Day. This time the whitefish salad was much better! Still whipped too much with nothing in it, but it tasted good. Not like refrigerator like last time. The lox was great, but still the same problem with the slices. Nothing even, bits of scraps and overall not good. The slicer really needs to take some lessons on cutting lox properly! So a bit better, but still could use a little help. People in the place were very friendly. read more

Can't imagine where 5 stars came from. Service was terrible/ our server forgot half the items and no refills on our drinks. Seemed more interested in socializing than working. Corned beef sandwiches were meh. Given the $$$ we expected more. He ordered what was supposed the "bigger" sandwich and I ordered the regular. Literally no difference except the higher price. This was a one and done for us. We will stick with Harold's in Edison, they are worth the trip and every $. read more

This is the quintessential Jewish deli! My husband and I finally made it here and we really liked it. For a Wednesday evening, it was very busy, which is always a great sign! The dining area is nice and updated with a decent number of tables, all of which were occupied. Our waitress was so friendly and bubbly even though she was running around from table to table and she never seemed to break a sweat. A plate of 2 kinds of pickles and waters were served right away. We gobbled them up! We ordered 3 mini potato pancakes for a little "nosh" before our meals. They were nice and crispy (just how my husband likes them) and came with a side of apple sauce. They were really good! The only thing that would make it better is if it came with some sour cream too. I was having trouble deciding between a few options but settled on the turkey club sandwich. It came with a generous mound of fresh turkey, bacon, lettuce and tomato in between 3 layers of toasted white (you can pick white, wheat or rye) and a side of their coleslaw and some mayo. I love coleslaw and theirs is real good! My husband obviously ordered a Sloppy Joe. It was packed with the usual 3 meats: roast beef, turkey, and corned beef/pastrami. Right off the bat he noticed the pastrami was still warm and that was a game- changer for him. He's had many sloppy Joes in his time but the warm pastrami raised his eyebrows! The sandwiches are big and we only managed to finish half of ours, but we definitely asked for a box and brought the other halves home. Im definitely going to try something new next time. They have so many options so you should come with an appetite. If I'm ambitious enough I'm going to try their unique Knishwich.. and yes, it's exactly what you think it is! read more
