Since I needed to provide verification of date of birth to start Medicare, a trip to the office was required. Fortunately, there is a location just 2 miles from us in SW Austin. The facility is large, clean and institutional. Wouldn't expect anything different. The waiting area is large, with lot's of seats. There were clean restrooms and water dispensers. You cannot bring in food/drink, no biggie. Once we arrived, I expected a decent wait time, so brought the spousey to join me and we just enjoyed each other during the wait. When we entered, not really knowing next steps, I went to ask the gentlemen in a uniform for direction behind a counter. I barely got out, Good Afternoon, I was.... well cutoff.. and told, check in at the kiosk as he pointed to the thingy to my left and went back to what was more important than helping me. Look, I feel for these folks who have these jobs. I'm sure they work with a great deal of angst from folks, not getting what they think they deserve from the system and may be the target of their discontent. However, it would be nice if he would of let me finish my statement, perhaps a smile, but not today. Hit up the kiosk, checked in, got a ticket and we sat and watched the monitor for when it was our time. As you are informed, your wait my be longer or shorter then others already in the room. Depends what you are there for. My number was called and we were greeted by a smiling agent, who took it from there. He eliminated my fears that I may have been a little late to apply, took my identification, including my Dutch birth certificate, passport and TDL to make copies. Came back, let me know I was all set and would be receiving stuff in the mail. Polite, efficient and pleasant interaction. I believe we may have been waiting 25mins. It was pretty quick IMO. We headed out and I made a point to walk out by the counter, smiled really big at the same gentlemen and thanked the dude and wished him a good afternoon. This blew him away by the look on his face, he managed a smile and wished me the same. Kill them with kindness is always a moto for me. For reference, I was there on a Friday a little after noon. I was again greeted by a very pleasant woman who swiftly moved me through the renewal process. We had a pleasant conversation regarding my new picture and my 23 years of living in TX as opposed to Mass. I walked out at 9 AM at exactly my appointment time! Winner winner chicken dinner! This locale has plenty of parking and many DPS folks to assist. Pro tip: Make sure you bring all the required paperwork or you will be SOOLuck and have to reschedule.

I waited less than 5 minutes and handed the agent the paper; it expedited things. I didn't have to start from the beginning. I had two issues that involved a lot of questions on my side. I was glad that she could answer everything, especially clarifying something I've been confused about for months. One thing I think they can improve on is being friendly. This employee wasn't rude, but she wasn't friendly. She was simply all business. That technically is appropriate, so I can't knock her for that, but a smile or positive attitude of a customer-facing employee would be nice.

Came here without an appointment because the online scheduler wasn't working for me. I arrived at…read more7:50am and walked in. There was a line to kiosks that I used to schedule an appointment. What was amazing was that same-day appointments were released right as I was working on the kiosk, and I was able to snag an 8:20am appointment slot! A ticket was printed out with my confirmation number. I grabbed a paper application to renew my license and used one of their pens to fill it out. Only 1 out of 3 pens were working, so I recommend bringing your own pen. At around 8:15am, my number was called and I went to my assigned counter number. I showed them my driver's license and my passport card to prove my citizenship. The person at the window walked me through all that I needed to do. I paid the $33 fee using a credit card. All-in-all, I was at the counter for about 5 minutes before the process was finished. A temporary paper permit was issued to me, and I was told my new driver's license would be mailed to me in 2-3 weeks. There's ample parking available at this location, right off of HWY 183, and quite a bit of tree shade, at least in the morning. I plan to return here the next time I need to get my license renewed in person!
