Vico from Naples Italy does pasta dishes legit here. All his pasta is great. It's good little spot for authentic Italian.

The 16" Farm House with added anchovies! Delicious!

You have to know when you come to Piccola Italia (aka, Little Italy and formerly Mauldin Gyros & Burgers), what you are getting into. Meaning, this is a true mom and pop restaurant run by Vico and Natalie serving excellent food in a small space - maybe 8 x 4 tops, 3 c 2 tops and at least one 4 top outside. Small and although renovated and being renovated, is moderate in decor. It's not a dive, but it's closer to that than upscale. And that's because it's mom and pop serving traditional Italian favorites and specialties, especially from their Amalfi Coast home. Vico and Natalie have brought their traditional and authentic cuisine to Mauldin. They even have bought, shipped from Italy and installed a state of the art pizza oven. Just on that latter point, the pizza here is A++, on par with Pizza Parcheggio and possibly better. Thinner crust, sturdy instead of limp, great ratio of ingredients to sauce to crust such that every bite will be eaten. No big "pizza bones" of just thick crust are left over because this is quality pizza to the edges. However, their meatballs are great, both as a side or sandwich. Pasta is made in house (yes, all from scratch)and the flavors in the sauce are light and well composed with individual bright flavors standing out and not lost in the sauce. Think grape tomatoes bursting in the sauce and standing out with that "pop" or Kalamata olives with their umami saltiness with fresh basil and garlic sautéed together with penne pasta, a touch of white wine and topped with light mozzarella - such is the Amalfi Pasta. Vico will even take special requests, especially if you can ask a few days ahead of time. It's not romantic in the sense of a fine decor. But if your idea of romance is great food, great company, feeling like you are maybe visiting someone's home or kitchen, with a nice bottle of wine and feeling at home by your host, then this is definitely that kind of romantic. Plus, you can still get a burger, but it might come with some grief that you are passing up some of the best Italian food in town.

"Homemade pasta Made from scratch." Nope, a lot of it is Barilla boxed pasta.

The food is very good and the Italian guy owner is very friendly. I got the cheese cannoli. It's a family business and has charm to it. I would 5 star this place all day but the menu wording is dishonest. It says "Homemade pasta made from scratch." This is not true, some of the pasta like the ziti is "Barilla" store bought boxed pasta. They do make the cannoli from scratch though. It say on the pasta page "All entrees include garlic bread". (They since removed the side salad). When I got the check it was much more than I was expecting. Turns out when I asked about the garlic bread they brought me out an ORDER of garlic bread and it didn't come with the meal. They now only include a single garlic breadstick with the meal. Thankfully the owner took this charge off for me. Clean up the dishonest wording on the menu and you have good food.

    White pizza and amalfi pasta

The food and service were GREAT! Vico recommended we order the Amalfi pasta and it did not disappoint. He told us all the ingredients are fresh and everything they serve is homemade, and you can TELL! Also highly recommend the white pizza. Absolutely divine. 10/10 experience and will be back!!

Pizza with family. We got the large pepperoni, sausage & mushroom pizza and a small cheese pizza for the kids. Both delicious! Service is very good. We have been here several times and have tried other pasta dishes that are tasty too!

They started us off with a prosecco shot on the house, which was a nice welcome. For starters, the whipped ricotta and goat cheese was a standout. It even won over my daughter, who said, "I've had goat cheese before but this is the first time I've liked it." For my main I had the Garlic Chicken. Creamy, rich, and perfectly done. It hit every note I wanted. The rest of the table worked through the Honey Garlic Shrimp, the Milanese, and the Lemon Basil Pesto, and everyone was happy. For dessert, the Dessert du Jour was a limoncello cake that my daughter absolutely loved, and my other daughter was stuffed but somehow still found room for the Cannoli from the Cannoli hole. Our server Taryn made the whole evening. Attentive, friendly, and on top of everything without ever rushing us. We will absolutely be back. Especially for Lasagna Sunday. 5 stars.

We have our regular order, dozen oysters and the shrimp po boy, so when our server Alex came over, we just asked for those items without looking at the menu. A few moments later, Alex came over apologized and said they just switched to the spring menu and the Po Boy has been swapped out. We were disappointed but didn't think too much of and replaced the Po Boy with more oysters. The GM came over and said the Kitchen Manager heard our situation, had the ingredients to make the sammich and wanted to make it for us. We thanked her but declined their offer. It really wasn't a big deal to us. When Alex brought our oysters, she again asked if we wanted the Po Boy and this time we relented and got the sammich. It was a good decision. It was awesome. The service went above and beyond and that's why we'll keep going back.

I tried the Branzino seafood entree which I had never heard of, but it was delicious. My wife had the Pappardelle pasta. Not exactly la dolce vita. Thankfully, carbs save the day. Everything was house made. The handmade pasta was made with flour flown in from Italy! I had the casarecce which had light and well-balanced bacon and lemon flavors. My date had the the "whole" branzino, which despite described as "whole" came already de-boned and without the head. It was crispy, golden, and serving main character energy with its unique presentation. Frutti di mare was... there. I didn't think the flavors were anything to write home from Italy about. Though, the presentation was impeccable, I must admit. Whitney, our server, deserves a standing ovation! She was part waitress, part Italian food narrator, and made every dish sound like it had a backstory which honestly just elevates the whole experience. And the lemon cheesecake is worth saving room for. Flavors were bright, dreamy, and worth every calorie. My only regret is skipping the house-made focaccia.

I've heard the place has been under new ownership within the past year, and it definitely felt like it might still be going through some growing pains. The staff kept our deadline in mind so we got to the show in plenty of time. So many amazing food and drink options, it was hard to choose. The wine and cocktail lists are enough to give you options but not overwhelming. Food has something for everyone, all Italian options. We tried the focaccia with ricotta and Caesar salad for starters (not pictured, we were so hungry!), then the agnolotti and pansotti pasta dishes. I will be dreaming about the pansotti. The agnolotti was good, although a bit sweet for me and a small portion size compared to everything else we had. A friend ordered the sausage pizza and it was a generous personal portion big enough to share. For dessert, the affogato. Ice cream could have had more vanilla for me, but still a delicious end to a scrumptious meal. Ambiance reminds me of a sunny day in Italy: lots of blues and whites, tile, and wood surfaces. Snappy casual dress code recommended. Table, booth, bar, and outside seating available. Restrooms are across the entrance and inside the hotel. No-step entrance with a roundabout drop off option, and accessible seating available. Parking available on the street and in nearby parking garages.
