However, we started to notice him getting frustrated at our daughter while reading notes (we sat in her classes). We brushed it off until she expressed how she felt like crying once off his reaction. He had forgotten that he had never gone over flats with her, just sharps, and got frustrated when she wasn't able to read them in a holiday song with a lot of note variation. He would teach her something once and expected her to perfect it right away, providing no extra support if she was struggling with something. The class seemed unorganized too. He doesn't expand on music theory either. He refused us make-up class too, although his policy states that he does them....it's credit he doesn't give for missed classes. We understand he has a business to run but the way he went about answering was extremely rude, unprofessional and confrontational. I have never had an interaction like that with anybody. He might've taken offense at me questioning why we were being denied a makeup but his reaction was very unprofessional. We decided to let him know that this would be her last month of classes but that it was pleasure seeing our daughter grow in his class. She missed the class before last due to illness but when I asked about a makeup again he said show up 15 minutes earlier.. When we showed up to her last class at 2:35 (for her 2:45 class), he said we were late in a confrontational tone. We were only late ONCE the entire year we took classes with him (if anything he would see us late because he was running behind). I stated her class was at 2:45, very confused, but let him know that we were late for the makeup part of it. We understood we were forfeiting makeup class time, which we were only getting 15 minutes of anyway. He stated it was at 2:30 and we were late so he would only see us until 3:00. I know the class is at 2:45-3:15, it was in our agreement over text which I have proof of. His reaction seemed like retaliation for ending classes with him and for the makeup class interaction. I decided to leave class as my daughter looked uncomfortable and he replied "have a nice life!!" I suggest rewording his makeup class policy so it's clear that makeup classes are conditional to certain terms. Parents don't brush off your children if they express feeling uncomfortable with a teachers style. I wish him and his students the best!

Felt very scammed by Patrick…read more. Overall very nice person who seems to have a passion for guitar. Just not the right teacher for someone who wants to learn more than songs. I spoke with him over the phone, stating that I wanted foundational teaching and NEVER to learn a song in class. Learning a song I could do on the internet. Properly progressing on guitar, learning theory and basics of styles is what I wanted in class. He said he could totally do that. To which I was excited. I show up and the first thing he does is open a boom full of songs. Asking me to strum chords to brown eyed girl. I proceeded to reiterate how I don't want to waste my money learning songs in class. To which he opens another book full of songs for me to learn how to play. We start looking at basic chords - but skip over all the prior knowledge of holding a guitar the strings etc. Oh to mention, i am also left handed and read everything differently than those that are right handed. He has no solution and basically tells me to figure it out. Great!! Overall awful lesson and 35 dollars I'll never get back. Wasted my time and money on someone who is simply not interested in listening to what I would like to be taught. Again great person. But not the teacher for someone who wants structure, and to learn the foundations of guitar. But for someone who wants to learn songs, he is great!

Ms Marcus seems like a very competent piano teacher, but in my opinion she is possessed by an almost Howard Hughes-like irrational paranoia over Covid "germs." Following her demands, I wore a normal mask during my first two sessions with her (more than a year after the CDC advice that this was no longer necessary, but not wanting to cause a fight), but on the third time I saw her, she was in a tizzy because she had just heard an NPR story about the dangers of "long Covid." She now demanded that I wear an N95 mask, which she had a supply of. And when that was too small for my face (the straps kept snapping off my ears), she hauled out some kind of medical mask that covered my entire face from eyes to chin, with straps around the back of my head, and insisted that I wear it. I told her that I found it very unpleasant, not to mention interfering with my concentration on the music I was trying to play. At that point she dismissed me and said she no longer wanted me as a student. So I suggest that potential students form their own opinions about this kind of policy. Ms Marcus explicitly rejects the advice of the CDC and other public health agencies, and demands mask-wearing, even in these times when stadia, arenas, and concert venues are packed with people sitting literally inches from one another, and when NO authorities consider such close contact dangerous. She believes that merely two people, sitting several feet apart in a room, pose a dangerous health threat to one another, and insists that her students wear extremely tight-fitting masks, even when this interferes with their concentration when trying to play the piano (obviously, if this is the only time they have to wear them in normal society.) Frankly, I think Ms Marcus is a health crank, and has a scientifically unjustified attitude about whatever threats there are in these days since the CDC has declared the pandemic over. Her insistence on masking requires that her students play along with her hypochondriac attitude. She may be a fine teacher for submissive children who follow her masking demands, but I think that most adults who take the advice of the public health authorities will find that her very extreme attitudes interfere with their piano-playing experience. I spent weeks trying to prepare for meeting with her only to be rejected because I simply follow the recommendations of the public health authorities. Accordingly, despite her obvious skills as a piano teacher, I can't recommend her.

To this date she has not refunded me $185 for extra classes she asked me to purchase which would help her pay for college plus $45 for one missed class. If you are a working mom I recommend you find another piano teacher who does not add stress to your life and beware she takes it very bad when you announce you will unenroll. P.S. She's performed at a venue before the pandemic and now she's performed online. This has given her so much more confidence. It is such a delight to hear her play and I know she enjoys it because I never made her. I know however, that some parents expect a certain measure of practical piano progress in their children and if you're looking for that, Michelle is great! She works with kids to help them practice on their own and assigns light homework to keep them directed. Michelle offers online instruction and also in-home instruction but with very strict infection control regulations. She is very cautious and cares about not spreading disease.
