I called several moving companies to ask for bids, and got very high quotes without feeling that they knew what the task required. Eventually, a light went on in my head telling me to deal with a piano company, or at least ask its recommendation. I called Barrus to discuss the project. They asked the manufacturer and model of the piano, and whether any steps were involved. (Yes, two.) It was clear that they knew the exact weight of the piano without looking it up. I told them when the carpet was scheduled to be installed and we scheduled the piano move the day before. They arrived exactly on time and took about 15 minutes to put the piano on a piano board, remove the legs and pedals, wrap the piano in a padded quilt that was purpose-made for this size of grand piano, and move it into the adjoining room. The carpet installer came as scheduled. (I mention this because this doesn't always happen.) And the Barrus crew returned the next day (a SATURDAY, for crying out loud) to replace the piano. Did an excellent job. If you need to move a heavy piano, don't call your strongest friends to come help you. Call Barrus.

He even came back twice more to install and adjust a new string for me. One visit was months later, once the string had stretched a bit. He was happy to come back and retune it for me. Communication: Evan's work is closer to art than prescribed work. Some jobs take longer than others, and Evan gave excellent notices (via text or call) for changes in schedule, etc. Skill: My piano had a broken string, a broken leg, sticking keys, and 1/2" of dust under the keyboard. Evan didn't flinch, and tackled each problem with confidence. Attention: He noticed the other instruments in the room, and he talked to me about how his tuning would bring my piano to true A440, making my other tuned instruments jive with the piano. It's tougher to find a copy of "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer" than you would think. It is decidedly NOT in the classics section.
