I had a very specific request for Ansel Adams photographs from the period he spent in Manzanar, an WWII Japanese Internement Camp. Owner Julia Christopher was able to source a stunning photograph through her network. From start to shipping to receipt of the item, the entire transaction was painless, and the documentation of everything was spot on. Thank you, Julia! read more

I was a customer at Photography West Gallery for several years, during which time I purchased 6 prints. The last print was to be picked up in person, instead they shipped and did not notify me. It was stolen. The replacement print was delivered damaged. Julia Christopher brought a police officer to my home, claiming insurance fraud. It was not, and the gallery refunded my payment. Julia, while in my home, was incredibly rude, making absurd accusations all of which were refuted by the police officer (also there in person). I communicated my experience with Carol, then the owner, who apologized and supported the immediate refund. I would never shop at this gallery again, nor would I recommend it to any photography lover. This morning as I was looking at one of the prints I purchased from them I was reminded of this terrible experience and the treatment from Julia and felt compelled to write a review- especially when I saw that Julia now the owner. read more

This is the best photography gallery in Carmel without question. Each photograph is hand printed by film photographers, nothing digital and beautiful crafted darkroom masters. Rooms dedicated to fine originals by Weston and Ansel Adams are not to be missed. There is something for everyone here. - from notecards and posters for lower budgets - to high end rare originals. Definitely a must see if you love photography and are in Carmel. read more

Great Gallery. Absolutely beautiful Photography shown at Photography West. Expert help. Accommodating personal. The entire experience makes it easy to say yes to the naturescapes, figurative and still life photography shown at this gallery. read more

In a town filled with art galleries, Photography West stands apart with a focus on film and wet dark room prints. The small gallery, which opened in 1989, is one of oldest in the US. Every photographer they display uses film and archival photographic papers: apparently some have built their own cameras and invented their own printing techniques. How do I know this? The women who work here are incredibly knowledgeable and helpful -- with no pressure to buy (unlike most other places in town). The two "back rooms" display original photographs by Ansel Adams and Brett Weston. These are not to be missed; frankly I come back over and over again just for these two rooms. read more

This "gallery" is a complete rip off. I would call anyone who does this a liar and thief to the art community. We purchased two prints for $75.00 each. And please see the attached photos. I had to take them off the backing they came on to fit them into a frame. And look what I found..... Someone cut apart a calendar and is passing it off as high quality prints for $75 per page. Avoid these crooks at all costs!! read more

Such a special gallery with amazing photographs. It is truly like visiting a museum getting to see Ansel Adam's originals and Christopher Burkett nature photographs. Visiting this gallery is an education in authentic photography and a creative inspiration. I ended up purchasing a Christopher Burkett and couldn't be happier. read more

Photography West has been in Carmel for more than 35 years, pretty long time for any gallery to survive. The gallery is small. I wondered how a gallery could prosper that long in a town where there are galleries everywhere in town. When we walked in the woman who greeted us did mention their history and the many artists that have been a part of this gallery over the years. She must have read my mind. What makes this gallery different that most of the others in Carmel is that all the work is captured on film and printed by the photographer. If you are in the market for photographic art you should stop in. I was not tempted to take anything home with me; I was inspired to photograph more. I still have a film camera; however I will stick with digital. read more

My GF is a photographer as both a hobbiest and as a professional, so stumbling upon this gallery was a pleasant surprise. The moment we walked in, Julia greeted us with such enthusiasm and started to take us on a tour on the photographers that she works with and whose works that she displays in her gallery. Julie is super knowledgeable on the history of photography and the effects of technology on photography as an art form. She went into great detail on how the photography is more of an art form based on not just how you take the photo but how you develop the photo. I myself am not well versed in photography, but after chatting with Julia, I definitely had a deeper appreciation for photography as an artform. read more

Bought my first piece of high-end art from Photography West Gallery early this month on a spontaneous trip to Carmel. The lady who helped me was Carol, later I found out from the website that she is a founding member of the gallery, was polite and very helpful. Being completely new to purchasing art, she was patient and help me pick out two pieces that I eventually fell in love with. They even gave me a free frame. I would definitely recommend this place for nice black and white photography. Most if not all the pieces they have are film photography not digital, like most modern day artists uses. Film is and will always be far superior than digital. They also have a few Ansel Adams in the back, be sure to check them out. read more

This gallery feels a lot different then the other ones I popped into while visiting Carmel for my first time a few weeks ago. The women at Photography West are genuine. It's clear that they know the work well, they study the artists, and they know the stories. The collection was unique and heartfelt. I really enjoyed viewing their choices. Nice selection of books too! I'm returning without a doubt. read more

Photographs like all art capture the mind's eye and can stir the soul. Photography West is a small gallery just off the main drag. Not enough wall space to show all they have, which is why you make friends with the staff like Allison, who doesn't hesitate to pull out a gazillion mats and stack them all over the place. CHristopher Burkett shows here, and he's just marvelous at both imaging and developing. Carol Henry does some amzing images of flowers without a camera. They also have photos by Ruth Bernhard, Ansel Adam, Brett Weston, and a couple others. They do a great job of framing. We bought a Burkett last year which graces us in the dining room. Ahh. read more

if you are looking for some exquisite photography for your home, this is a great place to peruse! breathtaking work, from local (or once-local) artists with a really nice, non-pretentious vibe too! note: when we were there, there was a reception for christopher burkett, who had some fabulous nature-inspired photography. check out more of his work at www.photographywest.com! read more

I love art and the art I love best is good photography. While visiting Carmel , CA I had a little extra time and checked yelp to see what I could find. Usually I find some photography mixed in with other types of art but Photography West Gallery was ALL photography, I was in heaven. Christopher Burkett's in California? Yes he is...right here. These people know what a beautiful gallery is supposed to look like. And what customer service is. They ship! read more

Julia is amazing. She's incredibly knowledgable and while I went in to just, I ended up buying a wonderful Roman Lorenc. They will frame it and ship it, and I'm not going to be home awhile, so she'll delay shipping until I get back. Framing is a high profit area for a gallery, but after spending time with Julia, I didn't mind it at all. If you want excellent photos head to the gallery. They also produce high quality books. read more

Photography West Gallery is one of two galleries in overly-galleried Carmel that I visit every time I'm in the area; 'nuff said. The staff are really nice and the photographs are ah-mazing! Breathtakingly beautiful, thought provoking photography that makes your mouth look like this: O. read more

A bit hard to find - but definitely worth looking for! The gallery keeps extending back, so there's a lot more than you would initially think. They have everything from Ansel Adams to Christopher Burkett (he is *AMAZING*) and Roman Loranc, who is possibly my favorite contemporary photographer!! An amazing collection of Brett Westons as well. Their interest free layaway plan helped me acquire my first Weston, and now when I go in, I know I'll be leaving with something new because everything is just so fantastic. The staff is friendly and approachable, and clearly have done their homework. Their enthusiasm for the artists and the work is palpable. Plus, I have never felt "pressured" to buy anything - everyone's motto seems to be "Buy what you love!" which a nice change of pace. If you manage to leave without buying something (I guarantee you'll probably be back!), they don't hold it against you. The gallery also has a great relationship with their artists that speaks volumes - I met both Roman Loranc and Christopher Burkett at shows the gallery put on. It was incredible!!!!! I am only sad that I didn't discover the gallery earlier - I would have LOVED to meet Ruth Bernhard! Her nudes are so stunning! This is definitely the place to come if you like photography. And the gallery still manages to be competitive and show beautiful work while maintaining the same two prerequisites they've had for 30 years - medium to large format work, hand printed by the artist in a wet darkroom. In a time when digital is everywhere, this gallery stands as a testament to the true art of photography. read more
