I also played a lot of Magic here, which was less pleasant as I am just awful at the game, but the owner gave me a consolation pop after getting just WRECKED in my first tournament. which was nice. read more

I don't tend to come over very often due to a lack.of selection and staff having attitude with customers. Lately I've had an appetite for reading a specific marvel title (imagine that). They are pretty close to where I live, as I walked in, I was acknowledged but staff engaged with each other than with myself. Sure enough, not even a graphic novel was there. One staff member asked if I was finding everything fine, I was not was my answer. I had been to this store before and recalled they had two other floors. That employee only told me the cheaper comics were downstairs and there were also less books upstairs. The downstairs were a mess of comics in no particular order. Another employee told me that if I wanted to find anything to look for it myself as he was in my way attempting to organize the bins, for reasons I don't know. I gave up looking and headed to the upstairs. There is no sign that says it's not open to the public, no one told me I shouldn't be there until I was there. There was a bookshelf full of comics but the employee told me upstairs I was not supposed to be there and there were no comics. I pointed at the shelf saying, "what is this?" And she gave no response. I came back down to the main level and bought a few books that were loosely, very loosely related to what I was looking for. This is not my favorite store. They don't communicate very well how I can find anything, they don't have much selection, and seem to have attitude that I'm looking to buy stuff during this bad recession. Can we work on this attitude please? If these employees don't want to try very hard, get people that would be! Thanks! read more

Best in Calgary! I used to go to this place back in University for magic cards, and they had an amazing selection and waaaaay better prices than other stores. About a year ago I rediscovered them, as I decided it was finally time to move my comic file that I'd had at one of their competitors. I can't believe I didn't do it sooner! The other place always 'forgot' to put things away for me, that never happens now and I get a better discount! The staff is very knowledgeable and the selection is awesome. I get a lot of TPBs now, and they always have everything I'm looking for in stock. No need to make special orders (although the couple times I have, they have got me exactly what I ordered). I don't play magic anymore but Phoenix still has a ton of singles and packs etc. They always seem to have lots of people buying and trading magic, so I assume they still have the best prices. Phoenix also does anime and manga if you are into that. They have almost a whole floor devoted to it. There are two locations in town, and I like the north store better. The staff is really friendly and their recommendations are top notch. I would have completely missed out on Walking Dead if they hadn't pushed me to try it! Also, they are the only store in town that is open late on new comic day and they have parking in the back. read more

This place has an amazing selection of comics, graphic novels, card games and cool action figures and collectibles! The staff was by my side as soon as I walked in the door to help me find something. I am new to comics / graphic novels. So I gave the guy some of the stuff i really enjoyed reading and he found something amazing for me. The only down fall to this place is the parking. it is horrible. but still worth 5 stars imo read more

I come to Phoenix for Magic cards whenever I am in Calgary. The staff is fun, friendly and knows their stuff. Brian and Oliver are especially great; always remembering my name - they make the purchasing experience easy and enjoyable. Prices are great as well, and their seemingly bottomless stock is remarkable. Highly recommended. read more

If you are looking for Magic the Gathering singles or boosters Phoenix Comics should be one of your destinations for many reasons: An excellent and ever evolving selection of singles, knowledgeable staff, fair pricing and a plethora of supplies to name a few. The wall comic selection is mostly current books with a great selection of TPBs and Hardcovers with everything from Maus to Beanworld to Woormwood: Gentleman Corpse and not to forget a section for the youngsters. The Manga selection covers quite a few shelves and the odd title I read has always been found. A varied selection of figures, statues and toys on the main and lower floors, with the latter having a more anime/manga based selection. While a little busy on fridays (MTG FNM tournament night) I enjoy a trip to Phoenix. read more

Awesome Selection of Magic singles and friendly staff. Been going to Phoenix for a long time and have always been amazed at the selection of single magic cards they have available for sale! If you are a new player or getting back into the game be sure to check out the awesome selection at the best prices in Calgary. I have never played an event at Phoenix but when I have questions about the game the staff is more than willing to take some time and talk things through to make sure that i understand fully before I make a purchase. I've gotta admit, I'm not a big comic book guy. I love the characters, I see all the movies, I watch all the TV series, I even periodically look online to keep abreast of my favorite characters' latest exploits, but I can't be bothered to go out of my way to go to a comic shop and spend money every month on buying the books, let alone storing them all. That being said, I (like David) used to come to Phoenix for Magic cards. However, I have to disagree with him after that. Their selection is DECENT, and the prices are PRETTY GOOD... but neither one can TOUCH the true leader in all things Magic in Calgary, The Sentry Box. (I've also reviewed that one). Since I just recently started to venture back into the game, I hit Sentry a few weeks ago... but then one day when I needed to pick up some packs for a friend, I noticed they weer already closed. I knew Phoenix was still open so I decided to go up there. I ended up spending a few bucks more, and the selection wasn't NEARLY as good... but I guess given that it wasn't their primary specialty like it is at Sentry, that's understandable. Now for the one major "dislike" I have about this place. Phoenix has always seemed, and still does, like a sort of fratenity. The same clientelle have been coming there for years, and are treated great (to the point that there was a pile of things behind the counter with people's names attached to it with Post-It notes) but as someone who isn't in that "inner circle", I always kind of feel like I'm more of a bother to them than a valued customer. On my last trip for example, the guy working the counter didn't even bother to look up from his laptop when asking if I needed help finding anything (and it was said in the the tone of voice that just SCREAMED 'not that I want to help anyway'). He ran through all the paces, and said all the things you're SUPPOSED to say, but compared to the guy at Sentry who went above and beyond to help, this guy was disinterested at best (and I was buying a pretty good ammount of stuff, so it's not like I was wasting his time.) I can't speak too much to the comic aspect because I not only didn't have the interest to look, but wouldn't have a frame of reference to compare to, but I do have to admit the place generally looks packed to the rafters with stuff - more so than any other shop I've ever been in. The up side is, I can only assume their selection must be better than most. The downside? It has a slightly unprofessional look and atmosphere to it... but then again, a lot of comic stores do. All in all, if you're in their key demographic, but since most people who read these will presumably be people that haven't been there already? It's definitely worth a look... but don't expect marvelous service. read more

Great selection of new comics and anime, figurines and so on... but also the most lonely shop in a strange way. I spent over 20 minutes there, and not even one person said hi or even acknowledged I was there. A bit run down, but then, what does anyone really need for a comic shop. read more

Great little comic book store, has nearly everything you could want. Staff are helpful when engaged, and if they do not have what you are looking for, you can request for them to ship it in for you. I was looking for some cheap comic books I could modpodge onto sneakers, and they have a dollar section with good picks. Overall a very pleasant experience! read more

I've taken my children here three times now. Third strike. Out. We'll never be back. If you want to be treated like you're interrupting someone's private magic card trading party instead of a paying customer then come on down. Otherwise, there are many other comic book shops in town that know what customer service is. I won't be back. read more

This shop is pretty cool. Has some neat stuff and loads of Magic the Gathering. I have been here a few times now to pick up some Magic cards and other items. There is one guy I think his name is David? He is super friendly and always ready and willing to help with anything you want or need. The others I have dealt with are not quite as friendly. I do find they treat the regulars so much better than anyone else that comes into the shop. And really.....how do you expect to get more regulars if they never feel welcome?! I have been to sentry box as well and I prefer their customer service as they tend to make everyone feel welcome no matter your experience. Phoenix comics is a lot closer to me and I would like to make it my regular go to place for Magic....but I really need to feel a little more welcome. We have 3 Magic players in our house plus tons of friends that play. We even hosted our own Friday night Magic at our place and had a turn out of 10ish friends which wasn't bad for a first time. So we have the ability to bring the business wherever we go..... read more

I don't usually remark on sites like these, however, I appreciate user comments and find them helpful. I went to Phoenix as they are in my neighborhood, I like to support local shop owners. What a blunder that was, my girlfriend was with me and had to leave due to the overwhelming body oder which permeated the store. What was even more offensive was the 3 twenty somethings which sat zoned out behind the counter, none of which had decent enough manners to look up or acknowledge our presence. Trying to overlook their blatent disregard of customer appreciation I went ahead and attempted to inquire about some magic cards, I had done my homework phoenix prides itself on their selection it was met with a blank faced awkward look of disdain and a very rude sales staff. This experience has not changed my viewpoint on local business. I wouldn't give these guys my patronage if they were the only store in Calgary who had what I was looking for. Don't waste your time with these punks they will leave a bitter taste in your mouth and they could turn a person off of the beloved industry forever. read more

I've been to Phoenix Comics NW a few times, but never bought anything. The staff aren't particularily friendly, in fact I've recieved the cold shoulder on more than one occasion. Their TPB's as far as I can tell seem to be mostly Marvel...and not even very popular stories at that. They have a pretty nice selection of manga though. read more
