There was a very large focus on World War II as well. That's great, but a lot of other museums cover that so I felt it was a bit redundant. I would've liked to have seen more about Native American and other parts of Arizona history. Or especially some more recent history within the last 30 years. It's $15 for adults and $12 for seniors, but I felt that was a little bit high for what you get in return. I could easily see this being a free museum like the Tempe History Museum. At least it should be a donation type of system, $15 was a bit steep for what you get in return. There is plenty of parking out front so that part is very easy. I feel this is especially suited for elementary school kids versus the avid museum visitor.

Tempe is my hometown and I am loving living in it again. I grew up here and attended Tempe High…read moreSchool. The town is mostly known as a college town because it is home to Arizona State University. There is a lot to see and do here. I have seen Tempe grow and change so much over the years. Including damming the Salt River to form Tempe Town Lake and the addition of the Valley Metro Light Rail. Tempe is named for the Vale of Tempe near Mount Olympus in Greece. Arizona State University was established in 1885 and was called Territorial Normal School back then. There are a few buttes around the city like Twin Buttes, Hayden Butte and the buttes over at Papago Park (by the zoo). Hayden Butte is also known as A-Mountain and is located next to ASU. I love climbing A-Mountain in evenings when the city lights come on. I also enjoy running around Tempe Town Lake every Sunday morning with the Hundred Mile Brewing Company running group. I grew up going up to ASU football games. It is a longtime tradition of mine to grab a burger at The Chuck Box before a game. The Chuck Box has been around over fifty years and makes a really good burger. Mill Avenue is a popular hangout spot for the college crowd because of its many bars and restaurants. Back in the 1990s, it was a popular place to cruise up and down on before the cops clamped down on it. I had my first legal drink at a bar on Mill Ave when I turned twenty-one. Rula Bula Irish Pub and Coffee Plantation were my longtime hangout spots on Mill Avenue for many years before they closed up. Tempe Town Lake is a popular place for events like the Innings Festival that takes place during Spring Training. They are also the home of the 9/11 Healing Field where they set up flags for every person that died during that tragedy. There have also been a number of big events and concerts over at Sun Devil Stadium. They hosted the Super Bowl in 1996. The annual Pat's Run is the largest run in the state and takes place in Tempe and finishes inside the stadium. Tempe is home to lots of great places to eat. Four Peaks Brewing Company is another longtime Tempe favorite of mine and is a popular place to hang out during sporting events. I love going there and grabbing a Kilt Lifter or a Pumpkin Porter on occasions. Tempe has a couple of shopping malls - Tempe Marketplace and Arizona Mills. I might be biased, but I think Tempe has a lot to offer. It has its bad spots like most places. But even when I was living in other cities, I always enjoyed coming back to Tempe to visit. If you want to learn more about the city, the Tempe History Museum is free and has some great exhibits that explore Tempe's past and present.

The Tempe Lake was so much fun to visit, it's a perfect walk and you get to cross some bridges and sidewalk trails. You get a good view of Tempe's skyline. I love the shopping hub near ASU's campus. There's also tons of eateries in Tempe, we passed up a ton of them on our way to the lake. You also NEED to try the coffee at Brick Road it's amazing! Parking isn't too bad in Tempe, it's a little difficult to find but fees are decent. Parks are clean and people generally have a good attitude unlike other places (I'm looking at you Scottsdale). Overall, Tempe seems like a welcoming, progressive, and friendly place to live. If you're a kind, chill person, you should be fine.

We actually didn't even realize we had come on this season's Zero Waste Day and were pleasantly surprised by the ease of being able to drop off our items. Everything was very well organized, with different stations for each type of item you are wanting to drop off. You don't even have to get out of your car! The staff here will take everything from your car for you. The city works with several vendors (E.g., document shredding companies, Goodwill, Tempe Community Action Agency) in order to make these days a success. Zero Waste Day allows residents to drop off additional items the center wouldn't normally take. This includes: Styrofoam Food donations Clothing Paper for shredding Bicycles and bicycle parts For a more complete list, go here: http://www.tempe.gov/city-hall/public-works/recycling-and-solid-waste/recycling/zero-waste-days From the Household Products website, "As of January 2018 over 98,109 residents have dropped off items to be recycled or reused at the HPCC. Since 2005 there has been over a 205% increase in participation including over 453,366 pounds of waste collected just last year with a 94% recycling rate! Total weight diverted from the landfill and storm drains is over 4,519,637 pounds of material." Very cool! Let's keep our planet as healthy as possible by recycling and reusing what we can! Details: -Open Fridays (7-12) and Saturdays (7-1) -Right next to the Tempe Fire Training Center -4 Zero Waste Days offered a year (Jan, April, November from the website) **You will need to bring proof of residency to be able to drop off items** (Driver's license or utility bill)

Sadly, one cannot rely on this system really to get around fully but it is great to the airport and venues downtown, especially Chase Field for a baseball game. It takes you right into Chase. ( 1-2 bucks versus 20 to 60 bucks so a good money saver) As of 1/25 it starts/end at Metro Center and ends in east mesa so you can get to Downtown Phoenix, ASU, and other points in-between. It is cheap and if you are senior even cheaper. Buck a ride for Seniors. I think 2 or 2.50 if not a senior. Airport shuttle is close to a hundred so definitely a great deal. The only down thing on the airport is our system does not have overnight parking for your car like other cities have. You will have to be able to walk or get dropped off at one of the train statins. For me, luckily I live right across the street from one Light rail station so it is nice to get me to Skyharbor. I can walk to and from. If you do not park overnight no worries there are plenty of park and ride places to catch the train. Just a tip be careful your concert or special event does not get out until late around 11pm or so and you miss the midnight last train and you get stranded. Found that out the hard way one time on my birthday. lol I was sad to see the city of Glendale stop the project because at one time it was suppose to go to State Farm Arena but no more. I work PT there and would love to take the train to work. I never understand why the 5th largest city in the USA does not have a better public transportation system. A lot of folks say the train is unsafe. Hogwash. I have never had an issue but homeless people do not bother me at all. I am not a person who is afraid of my own shadow. Sometimes on the train I have seen something new as of fall 2024 people are selling things on it. I believe that might be illegal but no one ever bothers me. That is weird and probably should not be allowed but like I said they do not bother me and i have other battles in life to worry about. Besides I am used to all that in my travels especially on the NY subways. In Mn I saw a buck or is it butt ( lol) naked guy on the train in the middle of Winter. lol and a Pick Pocket in Madrid. The adventures in travel series. I could write a book. I think the last time a woman was selling herbs or oils and perfume. Shrugs shoulders. We all gotta survive. I myself would not buy anything, especially anything edible from a stranger, but some folks were. She did not even ask me though. She just walks through announcing her wares. It did take me by surprise at first but only because that was new to me in PHX. Common in other places. I had never seen that before here locally. I am sure it might be a rare thing since security is usually tight on the train system platform, especially on big event or game days. i do not take the train often but I know people who take it daily and have zero problems with it. It is a good service if you live centralized. I wish it went to more places.
