What a fantastic museum to visit. They have some wonderful exhibits and of course exhibits change. There is a dark room with hanging lights you can walk thru that is absolutely amazing. But take it all in from the lights to the mirrored walls. The Fashion exhibit was my favorite i specifically went to to see it. Plenty of parking and off the light rail. Wednesdays they have name your price donation pricing. 1st Friday is free. Elevator gets you to all the levels and plenty of room to maneuver a wheelchair around the museum but too tight in the gift shop. They have events so check out their website.
My sister and I stopped by the Phoenix Art Museum on Friday for their August First Friday event. We didn't really know what to expect of the event, as we had not attended one before. We went in assuming it would be a toasty and crowded outdoor event, but instead, we encountered a calm, organized, indoor event. We waited in a brief line for the aura photography station. Because we arrived later in the event's timeframe, we weren't able to do much else, but the aura photography was incredible. We really enjoyed what we saw of the museum and the museum's associated store...why are museum stores always the best!? We look forward to returning to the museum and plan on attending future First Fridays as much as possible!
The Phoenix Art Museum may have a smaller collection than some of the larger museums around the country, but it offers several impressive exhibits that make it well worth a visit. The primary reason we visited was to see the Eric Fischl exhibit, specifically "Barbecue" from Steve Martin's personal collection. While exploring the exhibit, we also saw "Time for Bed" from David Geffen's collection and learned about Fischl's "Falling Figures" series, which reflects on the tragic events of 9/11. The artwork was both thought-provoking and memorable. Another highlight was Yayoi Kusama's "Fireflies Infinity Mirror Room". The installation is incredibly immersive, but it's also very dark inside. I'd recommend keeping a hand out in front of you as you move through the space so you don't accidentally walk into a wall while taking in the experience. I was also surprised to discover that the museum is hosting the largest collection of Baroque paintings outside of Europe. While many of the pieces may not be household names, the collection is impressive and definitely worth spending time with. The museum grounds are beautiful as well. It shares a large courtyard and sculpture garden with the Phoenix Theatre Company and the patio for Alden. Out front, you'll find several sculptures, including a T-Rex and a variety of water features. One of the first things you'll encounter after entering is Carlos Amorales' "Black Cloud". Seeing thousands of butterfly silhouettes spread throughout the corridor creates a striking visual effect and makes for a memorable introduction to the museum. The museum is currently undergoing renovations, so not every floor is open. Even so, we spent our entire visit on the first floor and never ran out of things to see. There are plenty of exhibits to explore, including a fun interactive installation featuring green apple candies that visitors are encouraged to take. Whether you're an art enthusiast or simply looking for a unique way to spend an afternoon in Phoenix, the Phoenix Art Museum offers a diverse and engaging experience. We'll definitely be back to see more once the renovations are complete.
The museum is quite large. They sometimes have special exhibits that cost extra above the general admission. As with all museums, they sometimes change out the art that's on exhibit. They do have some that are on permanent display. I think the large hamburger is a permanent display. I have also seen a large pile of candy on the floor at the back of the museum for quite some time as well. I like to visit the best when it's not too crowded, but most of the times I have gone, there were a lot of other people there. There is quite a bit of parking, but when the museum gets so crowded, it is difficult to find a space. The walk across the parking lot is so hot. I wish they had solar panels above the parking spaces, or a parking structure. It would be nice to get some shade for the cars.
In my latest visit to Arizona, I stumbled upon a free cultural pass to the Phoenix Art Museum (PAM). The local library in the City of Surprise lets you check out the pass granting you and a friend one, free admission to the museum over a 7-day period. My mom and I were able to save over $50 getting this pass. The museum is a good hour drive from Surprise, but it was worth a full day outing. Parking was free, but you might have to drive around to find an available spot. The museum has 3 floors. We only spent time exploring the first one, and didn't even fully see it because we ran out of time and energy! There were several temporary exhibits on the first floor which is great for keeping residents returning and enticing art aficionados who want to see the latest "thing" that everyone is talking about. The art mediums were varied. We saw modern paintings from a local artist, female created ceramics from Asia, historical cloisonné, and some fun innovative art. I've been to this museum years ago. One famous item that is part of the permanent collection is a painting of President George Washington. This painting was used as the template for what we see on U.S. currency. It is found on the upper floors, so be sure to see it. May I suggest you stop by the gift store and buying a gift for a friend, a token for yourself and perhaps a postcard to tell others about your visit? Your purchase supports the museum and helps bring new exhibits to the area.
What a wonderful intimate delightful personal concert at the Phoenix Art Museum. I attended a Candlelight Tribute to Drake. Basically Drake's songs were played in a classical hip hop form & it reminded me of the Netflix show Bridgerton & the hip hop way they play music with the violins (strings) & piano. Make sure to check out the pics & video because they say it all. Had a GREAT time & enjoyed myself
We finally made it to the Phoenix Art Museum! It was a very hot day and we wanted to go out and about somewhere where it was indoors and cool! This was the ticket! Plus I wanted to see the Italian Florentine Baroque, The Haukohl Collection. The parking was easy and ample. We were early so the parking lot was almost empty. Upon entering, I noticed they offered discounts for veterans for $20.00. I saved $10.00! They informed us that a couple of exhibits were closed for renovations. That didn't bother me since I was mainly here for the Florentine exhibit, which is where we started our self guided tour. The exhibits features more than 30 rare 17th and 18th century paintings and sculptures showcasing Florence's artistic legacy under the Medici Grand Dukes. The exhibits were beautiful. Each told their own story. Each painting were characterized by bold symbolism, vivid colors, and dramatic contrast of light and shadow. I read each plaque next to each painting. I highly recommend viewing this exhibit in person as this is the largest holding of Florentine Baroque art outside of Italy. Of course we toured the remaining exhibits that were open. It was $20.00 x 2 well spent. I love museums and I'd wish I would visit them more. Summer is the perfect time to visit them as it keeps you out of the summer heat!
Definitely one of the best museums in Phoenix and is said to be the largest museum in the southwestern US!!! Such a beautiful museum overall with the nicest staff!! And ALWAYS some amazing and exciting exhibit that you have to go see. This time it was the fashion exhibit. The Kaleidoscope of Fashion!!!! World renowned clothing designers celebrated over the last 60 years. From Judith Leiber's miniature pill boxes to Givenchy and Bill Blass, just to name a few!! Fabulous colors of amazing fashion!!! Other exhibits as well through part of the museum, while a major renovation is going on throughout and will be completed in the Fall. One of the best gift shops as well!!!
Nice small, but mighty city museum. Prior to 'Em's soccer tournament at Arizona Athletic Complex, we filled the time with a quick visit to the city art museum. It was very cool to see the small collection of modern and classical art available for view here. The museum also had some performance art over the weekend. Additionally, we were able to take part in some interactive activities that the museum had going on. Plenty of activities only bolster the museum's rotating collection. This visit we were able to enjoy Florentine Baroque, which highlighted classical works of art and the frames surrounding them. The Greatest Fits, showcased dresses and fashion fits from the 60s and on. Yvonne Montoya and Safos Dance Studios put on a Stories from Home, communicating through dance reasons for today's disparities and culture. I was impressed. I wish we would have arrived during the museum's Blue Star season, but we were only able to enjoy a $5 discount. That aside, we enjoyed our time and the exhibits at the PHX Art Museum.
Located in downtown Phoenix, the Phoenix Art Museum has a varied collection of art on offer. As someone who isn't the biggest fan of modern and contemporary art, this museum was a bit of a miss for me compared to other city museums I've been to in the country. Perhaps the emphasis towards more trendy art was a bit lost on me, and the allure of the butterfly entryway was lessened by people doing the whole model thing, posing as if there was some professional photo shoot going on. It wasn't all bad, as I did enjoy the miniature rooms they had on display, but even the more classical European art I tend to like had paintings from known artists that were pretty underwhelming works overall. It's as if they checked off a box of French impressionist artists, but put on display some of their least impressive works. There was a portrait of George Washington that mirrored other portraits of his found at many other museums. I didn't even bother snapping pictures in the more modern art galleries as much of it was of little appeal to me. Overall, the Phoenix Art Museum and its hodgepodge collection of arts was an underwhelming and average museum experience for me, as I much preferred the nearby Heard Museum and Scottsdale's Museum of the West (Western Spirit), which both seemed to have more soul and identity.
PRICE SLIGHTLY STEEP Not my favorite art museum I've ever been to as it lacks big well known pieces. I felt the adult price of $28 was too high, especially as a couple -- that's almost $60 for a day out of looking at some pictures. They do offer a AAA $3 discount, which we took advantage of. KUMSAMA FIREFLIES INFINITY MIRROR ROOM My favorite part was the Kusama Fireflies Infinity Mirror Room, where you wander into a room of darkness surrounded by mesmerizing twinkling lights and mirrors. I wasn't aware that this was there, so it was a pleasant surprise. LAYOUT I felt the museum has a slightly confusing, disjointed layout. GIFT SHOP There's a quality gift shop selling typical art museum items like jewelry, scarves, mugs, etc. LOCKERS There are complimentary lockers for backpacks/purses and water. WEB SITE Before our trip, I used their web site and found it confusing to find out the price of tickets and as to whether they were actually open on certain days. See my photos attached. Helpful?
5 star, top tier museum experience. Great way to beat the heat in Phoenix, too. Easy to find parking and not too packed, even on a summer weekend. I hope you'll feel fortunate to experience the great contemporary works and really incredible older collection pieces. Yayoi Kusama's art installation is worth the price of admission! It's interactive and trippy and fun to experience with others. Art can be so many things and it's cool to remember "fun" is one of those many things. Discovering the photography of Omar Soto here was also a highlight. For paintings, it's a thrill to see a Picasso, a Monet, an O'Keeffe and always a blessing to see a Mark Rothko painting. I wonder how many times these pieces have been restored. How many of the strokes that you can see on canvas are from the original painter? Does it become the Ship of Theseus? The layout flowed well, I felt like I got to experience every exhibit on every floor over the course of a few hours. Steps and elevators to navigate to the mezzanine and second and third floors. It's not as sprawling and daunting as the Met in New York or MOCA in San Francisco. I'd compare this to exploring a mid-to-large sized museum like the Broad in Los Angeles. I hope my frame of references work for you. You nerdy art museum lover, you.
I love this place! I love the T REX yes it's hidden if you know you know! I've always enjoyed going to this museum to relax and just zone out it's very peaceful.
This is a nice little art museum. I really enjoyed the relaxed, laid back atmosphere. There is a really nice collection and it had a ton of special exhibitions. The only complaint we had is someone was changing lights in a hall and that genie lift squealed horribly. SO loud and annoying Surely there is a better time to do that?? Anyway, it was a great day. Nice collections and a beautiful facility read more
The exhibits were intricate and detailed. Some had some really neat parts to their exhibits like the lavender on the ground in the temporary exhibit. The handicapped door doesn't work.. would be nice if it did since I was on a knee scooter and saw a woman with her son pushing her around. Overall, I'd go back again when I can walk. It was hard to scoot around on my knee that long. My friend really enjoyed the Monet. She went in the light exhibit and loved it. I didn't go in as I was afraid the scooter would catch one of the strings but the video she showed me was cool. read more

I love going to Art Museums as I have several Art Degrees, art feeds my soul! I enjoyed the Phoenix Art Museum, free entrance days and accessibility to Art us such a wonderful resource. Seriously, if you hadn't already been, do check it out. The different galleries contain a nice variety of permanent collections, modern, old masters, contemporary, digital etc. The Art Museum is a great place to have a date, meet a fellow person who enjoys looking art paintings, fashion and sculpture. Visiting friends, colleagues or family can enjoy something cultural when they tire of the typical top googled list of tourist things to do when in the Valley of the sun!! read more
Great place to see some amazing art. I'm a big museum nerd. When I was a photography and art history student back at Chandler-Gilbert Community College, we did many field trips to this museum. I have written many papers on different exhibits that have passed through here for extra credit (students get in for free with an ID). My favorite part of the Phoenix Art Museum is the Norton Photography Gallery. I've seen some great black and white photos over the years in this gallery. The firefly room that is next door is pretty cool too. The Phoenix Art Museum opened in 1959. It has three levels and a sculpture garden outside. Devour Phoenix used to host their big culinary event of the year in the garden area before they outgrew it and relocated. Phoenix Art Museum is neighbors with Phoenix theater and share the parking lot with them (which can be a pain on busy nights). They do have a light rail station just outside the museum. Free days are late Wednesday afternoons. First Fridays offers voluntary-donation hours and reduced rates on certain exhibits. I've enjoyed some of the fashion exhibits that have been showcased here over the years including the Hollywood costume tour and the most recent Fearless Fashion exhibit. Some other favorites I've seen were the Teotihuacan, Cezanne, Ansel Adams, and Warhol exhibits. read more

I really enjoy going to this art museum. My parents always get us "culture passes" from the public library for free admission, but I'd happy pay for my entrance. To cosmically balance out the scales, I extra treat myself to things from the art museum gift shop. There are so many architecturally beautiful hallways and alcoves and other structural spaces. The whole experience is art-filled. The permanent collection is varied and well-represented, and the special exhibits are so cool. When my parents and I were last there, a gallery attendant went above and beyond in explaining to my mom about the special exhibit, which included a piece of art on which one could walk. His shirt read "here to help," and WOW, did he! I find this art museum especially inspiring. It's large enough that you can definitely spend three hours in it, but not so large that you can't see everything. One of my favorite aspects of this art museum is their employee art showcase room. The staff is TALENTED! read more
With company in town ranging in age from 5 to 70 it can be tough to find things to do that please everyone. But here you go- yep, our granddaughter enjoyed the museum immensely. We picked up the scavenger hunt sheet when we arrived and we ended up seeing just about the entire museum searching for the exhibits! Make sure to find the time to see the 'firefly' exhibit- wow- once we convinced her to step foot 'into' the exhibit, she LOVED it. That's all I'll say; but DO IT. She also loved the miniatures room - very cool. Once she 'won' by finding all the pieces, she raced to the front desk for her prize pin. She's been telling everyone she 'won the museum'. We then had a snack at the snack shop and enjoyed the beautiful weather in the gardens while she did some artistic work of her own in her coloring book. Truly a fun experience. read more
A great initiation to Phoenix. A postmodern structure with sleek exterior lines. Vast amount of space with the work well spaced out. Surprisingly, You can make it through the entire collection in a few hours. There are references to the Southwest with the landscapes, plantings, indigenous compositions. The American Modern had a good representation of sculptors of the late 20th century. I did not try to see everything. I aimed to see three sections. However, the contemporary section was the most difficult to find. It is only accessible by a staircase and elevator by the bar area. Due to my meandering, I passed through most of the galleries. Buildings such as these are not the easiest to navigate as they are not organized with function in mind. In my case, it was fun to be on a treasure hunt. The firefly installation was a play on your sense perception. Two blocks from the street rail line. If you head south on Central you will come across an array of eateries. read more
Who doesn't love free artwork and truly free post cards. Off the beaten path just above southwest checkin is this free to the public library. Calm and serene, it is the perfect place to check out unique creations while avoiding the masses. Cute postcards free for the taking and a signature book to leave a thought or two. Stop by. If I'm being completely honest, I didn't care much for our visit to this museum. The collection didn't impress me. At times I felt like I was wandering through the rift raft of a garage sale. A couple wings were closed, and paying over $40 admission felt like a down right mistake once inside. I'd probably visit on their free day but paying admission here was something I later felt bad for suggesting we do as an activity for me and my friend. I enjoyed experiencing Yayoi Kusama's swarm of fireflies, it was brand new to me and her works are currently unavailable to experience in Los Angeles at the Broad so this was a nice little treat. I was altogether unfamiliar with Wayne Thiébaud and enjoyed the four cones and finding a calendar in the gift shop to see other works of his. There was also a friendly cashier in the gift shop who I chatted with about him. I think her convo was one of the highlights of my visit. She mentioned him giving the commencement speech at her graduation and provided some other useful info about him. Parking is free and the staff were friendly, but this may take the cake for one of my least favorite museums. I guess I should have checked out the music instrument museum. We were deciding between the two and chose art over instruments, it wasn't the right decision for our taste. read more

What a great place to spend some time. So many beautiful works of art. The Fireflies exhibit, that in now on the first floor close to the gift shop, is trippy but so cool. The current (Nov 2023) fashion exhibit is excellent. Lots of attractive dresses, coats, jackets, and boleros focused on ballet. The fashion exhibits tend to be accessible to the normal person. Lots of fine clothing. The European art collection upstairs is also really nice. So many stunning artworks. The modern art collection is pretty big, but so many of them are 'theoretical' pieces that require an interpreter to make any sense of them. There is lots of room here, quiet places to sit and ponder the art. Nothing is crowded. A wonderful place of refuge from a world in chaos. read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Phoenix Art Museum today. We took advantage of the "Pay What You Want" special that the Museum has every Wednesday from 3p to 7p. The Phoenix Art Museum is the largest art museum in the Southwestern United States. There are exhibits galore on 3 different levels. We spent 3 hours at the Museum, and we were able to see everything. The Museum is well worth the visit, offering a wide variety of art including Contemporary Art, European Art, Asian Art, and my personal favorite, Thorne Miniature Art. Non Flash photography is allowed, and I took quite a few. A visit to this Museum will not disappoint! read more

Open during covid .. if you need a quiet place to get away to.. this is it.. roam this museum and soak in all of the beautiful things on display .. you could spend a couple of hours seeing everything From paintings to statues to light installations there is always something in each collection to appreciate There are museum employees on every floor in every space to provide you with answers or facts for various pieces I absolutely love the statue in the Western Collection.. it's truly amazing in person .. the detail is breathtaking.. A must see! The pearl bonnets .. so beautiful on the exterior until you realize they are made of hundreds of steel corsage pins .. reminds me of Handmaids Tale .. Go check them out often .. and consider getting an annual membership!! read more

The Phoenix Art Museum is a huge 4 story museum spanning different genres of art. They have abstract, contemporary, historical, renaissance, socio-cultural, and more. It was well worth it for the $18 admission price (this is for student discount, regular adult admission is $23). I would recommend allocating at least 2-3 hours to being able to explore this massive museum. Make sure you grab a map of the museum before exploring to see which exhibits they currently have and how to navigate to each exhibit. Overall, I can definitely say that this museum has been the best one I've been to in all of AZ! read more
My 2500th review goes to this fantastic museum. I had a great time exploring here. Some pieces still have me thinking. Some pieces had me laughing. Some taught me so much. Some had me nostalgic. It's definitely a must whether you're visiting or living in Phoenix. Went on a Wednesday afternoon where it's supposed to be free 3-9, but Lisa at the counter made it sound like it's $7 a person, so we paid. This was weird. The first floor had the special exhibits, modern art, and Asian art. Here, you can see art from so long ago, which is unbelievable that this exists here in the middle of Phoenix. The second floor had North American art, South American European art, and fashion. I loved the Americana feel and culture. I also saw some Picasso, Chagall, and O'Keeffe, among so many others. Who would've thought?! The third floor was the most fun one. The modern and contemporary paintings and sculptures were so colorful and unique, and they even had Yayoi Kusama's light installation in the corner! There's also a photography exhibit that you need your ticket to enter. There is also a super cool gift shop in the lobby and a beautiful sculpture garden to check out outside! Overall, loved it and would love to come back to check out more exhibits and art! read more
Beautiful art museum! Great way to spend a few hours in downtown phoenix. There is a ton of parking and lots of fun special exhibits. They also have a nice little cafe and outdoor seating area. I loved seeing Yayoi Kusama's infinity room here and the miniature rooms. I always make sure to check their calendar and come on "pay what you can Wednesday" so I don't have to pay full price. It can be a lot if you are bringing a few people on a regular day at $20 per person. It is a lovely museum but it's not too big so you probably won't really spend several hours here. I would still recommend seeing it at least once! read more

I've been to PHX art museum about a dozen times. The exhibit this month (September21) was better than most others despite several parts of the museum being closed. The Yayo Kusama firefly display was super cool and trippy. I was lucky enough to see another one of her displays in Aspen 2 years ago. That's equivalent to seeing like 2 total eclipses in 2 years so that was a win. The black n white retrospective photo exhibition by Palfi was the most moving thing I saw. Some photos gave me goosebumps n chills down my spine as they clearly illustrated the economic, racial, and social inequalities throughout the US (not too long ago). The "Violet Protest" was creative. The artist is hoping to present her textiles to congress. The red and blue (purple) is meant to symbolize unity and is a protest again political divisiveness. I support that 100. If I had any artistic talent at all I would contribute. I'm happy I went again. Going to the PHX art museum always seems to be a therapeutic experience. Looking forward to going again soon. read more

Went for First Friday and the exhibit of Fearless Fashion of Rudi Gernreich. First trip to this place & I was honestly blown away by it. It's so spacious & the exhibits are amazing. The detailing is phenomenal. There is just enough information to whet your appetite & enough for you to do some research. I can definitely see the value in becoming a member of this museum. Each exhibition was uniquely crafted and beautifully displayed. I could spend hours here appreciating the beauty created here. If you haven't seen this unique exhibit by Rudi Gernreich, you should. Some of it was breathtaking & others gave me pause but were unique & interesting. I found it fascinating how so much of the fashion from then can be seen in today's fashion. Also, interesting was how he described the fashion being unisex & how true that is today. Truly fascinating. read more
Came here on a Saturday during my visit to Phoenix and glad we came. Adults tickets (currently January 2023) are $24/person. We got free tickets from our hotel which was great but keep the price in mind if you plan to go. Spent about 2.5 hours here which was enough time to visit all 4 floors. Lots of great exhibits, we had a great time walking through all of them. Friendly museum staff. Would come back in the future to see the new exhibitions. Nice gift shop too! I'd suggest staying 2.5-3 hours to have enough time. read more
It was a rainy day in PHX and we needed something indoor to do, we decided to visit the museum and got our tickets online. I was really interested in the MR: exhibit since he's was a student under Murakami another Japanese artist that I adore. We spend the most time here because it was so unique, kawaii and I love anime in general. Another must do is the Yayoi Kusama Fireflies Infinity Mirror Room. Unlike the Broad in LA, no reservation require and you can walk right in. Just be careful because I did see someone walk straight into a mirror. *ouch* This is a great place to spend 60-90 mins here while you are in town. I also love the gift store and I picked up some cute cactus thank you cards as souvenirs. read more
Came on a Free Friday, with some family from out of town. Crowded and yet not at the same time. Exhibits are spread out enough that the number of people from a packed parking lot did not feel like we were all elbow to elbow. Museum boasts having pieces from "Renaissance to the present." The majority of what we saw was contemporary and modern art. Yayoi Kusama's installation was my favorite part of the museum. It is immersive. What starts with a fear of the unknown gives way to a relaxing and joyous experience. Making art of art, I had fun taking different shots of the lights. Staff was helpful and friendly. Museum was easy to navigate. While multiple floors, there are several elevators and stairs. One person with us was in a wheelchair. He felt like he able to see most of the museum without problems. read more

Had a few hours to kill before my flight and the Phoenix Art Museum was the perfect fit for that. Thumbs up for free parking. Admission is reasonable for adults and everyone working there was friendly and helpful. The museum is big enough to spend 2-3 hours but not too big where I would start to feel overwhelmed. I have always been obsessed with artwork that's focus is on the elements. I may have accidentally come to this museum at the perfect time. I loved the temporary exhibit featuring the timely work of Teresita Fernandez, exploring themes of devastation but also beauty in the fires that are running through parts of American mainland and Puerto Rico right now. Her night filled landscapes painted with graphite and metallic paint are spectacular, serene, moody, and also still at the very same time. It was also great seeing the Ansel Adams temporary exhibit. It's cool seeing how close he viewed the landscape in the 1930's as he drove through New Mexico, Arizona, and Northern California and also reading the way he described the ephemeral nature of beauty. The permanent collection is terrific too, especially as it relates to post war and contemporary art. They have a great piece by Georgia O'Keefe (a favorite of mine for all of her meditations on nature) in addition to many other household names. read more

I've thoroughly enjoyed this museum ever since I moved here, visiting it at least a couple of times a year. Special exhibits usually change out in the Fall and Spring so those are the best times to come. Voluntary-Donation Admission are days when general admission is free, and special exhibits are discounted. These are the first friday (6-10pm) of every month usually they also have a live performance. During one First Friday event, I remember Samba dancers putting on an excellent show right at the entrance. Another "free day" is the second Sunday of every month, this is Discount Tire Free Family Sunday (noon-5pm). And they partner with the Phoenix Public Library, dancing troupes, among others for an eventful Sunday. There are also Pay-What-You-Wish Wednesdays (3-9pm). If you can't make it on the days previously mentioned don't worry, pricing is fairly reasonable, for general admission, adults are around $20, with Senior Citizens, Students, Youth, and Children all being less than that. However, if you find yourself coming back multiple times a year, membership can be more economical. Membership for 1 year for 2 adults is $80, and a family is $90. Throughout the years my favorite work of art here has been "Ponder" by Deborah Butterfield, a horse sculpture which is made from what most of us would consider to be junk, scraps of wood, wire, things you would see on the side of the road - given new life in this lovely horse sculpture. Another piece I love is the, "You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies" by Yayoi Kusama. When you enter, it's difficult to find the exit and that's the magic of it - now this magic is not made with smoke and mirrors but dim LEDs and mirrors. It's quite an experience, it's what the museum calls an "infinity mirror room." My favorite special exhibit so far has been the "Legends of Speed", displaying winners of the Le Mans Grand Prix, Targa, GT, Sebring, Mille Miglia, Can-Am, Indianapolis 500, and Formula One. An excellent, varied collection showcasing a 1911 Franklin (won the Desert Race) to the 1968 Ford GT40 and many beauties in between including a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. My favorite collection is the "The Thorne Miniature Rooms" which take you through history via miniatures of homes from the 13th Century to the 1930's, they're absolutely stunning, it feels like you're peeking back into history. Clearly I could go on and on about this museum, but in reality you just need to see it for yourself, bring your most pensive expression and your uninhibited curiosity and let the Phoenix Art Museum do the rest! read more

Is there Van Gogh paintings in this museum?
Sort of. I don't recall any paintings but there were some Van Gogh drawings.
Would this be a great place to take someone on a date cause I know someone who loves art just as much as I do but I actually have never been to an art museum?
The Phoenix Art Museum is large and there is something for everyone. I think it would be great for a date because there's so much variety and you can talk about it. There's also a nice garden outside and a great café.
Is this museum free on Weds.? Are there any other free museums in downtown area?
Yes, from 3pm - 9pm on Wednesday. It's also free every first Friday from 6pm - 10pm and every second Saturday for Discount Tire Family Day.
