If I'm being completely honest, I didn't care much for our visit to this museum. The collection didn't impress me. At times I felt like I was wandering through the rift raft of a garage sale. A couple wings were closed, and paying over $40 admission felt like a down right mistake once inside. I'd probably visit on their free day but paying admission here was something I later felt bad for suggesting we do as an activity for me and my friend. I enjoyed experiencing Yayoi Kusama's swarm of fireflies, it was brand new to me and her works are currently unavailable to experience in Los Angeles at the Broad so this was a nice little treat. I was altogether unfamiliar with Wayne Thiébaud and enjoyed the four cones and finding a calendar in the gift shop to see other works of his. There was also a friendly cashier in the gift shop who I chatted with about him. I think her convo was one of the highlights of my visit. She mentioned him giving the commencement speech at her graduation and provided some other useful info about him. Parking is free and the staff were friendly, but this may take the cake for one of my least favorite museums. I guess I should have checked out the music instrument museum. We were deciding between the two and chose art over instruments, it wasn't the right decision for our taste. read more

The Phoenix Art Museum is a huge 4 story museum spanning different genres of art. They have abstract, contemporary, historical, renaissance, socio-cultural, and more. It was well worth it for the $18 admission price (this is for student discount, regular adult admission is $23). I would recommend allocating at least 2-3 hours to being able to explore this massive museum. Make sure you grab a map of the museum before exploring to see which exhibits they currently have and how to navigate to each exhibit. Overall, I can definitely say that this museum has been the best one I've been to in all of AZ! read more

Beautiful art museum! Great way to spend a few hours in downtown phoenix. There is a ton of parking and lots of fun special exhibits. They also have a nice little cafe and outdoor seating area. I loved seeing Yayoi Kusama's infinity room here and the miniature rooms. I always make sure to check their calendar and come on "pay what you can Wednesday" so I don't have to pay full price. It can be a lot if you are bringing a few people on a regular day at $20 per person. It is a lovely museum but it's not too big so you probably won't really spend several hours here. I would still recommend seeing it at least once! read more

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Phoenix Art Museum today. We took advantage of the "Pay What You Want" special that the Museum has every Wednesday from 3p to 7p. The Phoenix Art Museum is the largest art museum in the Southwestern United States. There are exhibits galore on 3 different levels. We spent 3 hours at the Museum, and we were able to see everything. The Museum is well worth the visit, offering a wide variety of art including Contemporary Art, European Art, Asian Art, and my personal favorite, Thorne Miniature Art. Non Flash photography is allowed, and I took quite a few. A visit to this Museum will not disappoint! read more

Open during covid .. if you need a quiet place to get away to.. this is it.. roam this museum and soak in all of the beautiful things on display .. you could spend a couple of hours seeing everything From paintings to statues to light installations there is always something in each collection to appreciate There are museum employees on every floor in every space to provide you with answers or facts for various pieces I absolutely love the statue in the Western Collection.. it's truly amazing in person .. the detail is breathtaking.. A must see! The pearl bonnets .. so beautiful on the exterior until you realize they are made of hundreds of steel corsage pins .. reminds me of Handmaids Tale .. Came here on a Saturday during my visit to Phoenix and glad we came. Adults tickets (currently January 2023) are $24/person. We got free tickets from our hotel which was great but keep the price in mind if you plan to go. Spent about 2.5 hours here which was enough time to visit all 4 floors. Lots of great exhibits, we had a great time walking through all of them. Friendly museum staff. Would come back in the future to see the new exhibitions. Nice gift shop too! Wide variety of art on display including surrealist work and modern art. Some displays are interactive with video or audio components. There is a gallery of colorful images of Hindu gods that is striking. Currently a large Barbie exhibit is showing with dolls from across the decades. Some highlights: Traveling Exhibits: Barbie was a treat for fans! Fireflies: While fireflies aren't part of the permanent collection, they have been here for years and are a must see. People in New York have waited in line hours to see this wonderful exhibit. Voluntary-Donation Times: If you're budget-conscious, take advantage of voluntary-donation times. Every Wednesday from 3 to 7 pm and the first Friday of each month from 3 to 7 pm, you can explore the museum without a fixed admission fee. The restaurant and gift shop are also worth visiting. read more

I've been to Phoenix quite a few times now & finally made a stop to the art museum. I had time to kill for a solo trip and it was the perfect afternoon, especially on a hot day. My favorite exhibits were the fast fashion and fireflies room. The fast fashion featured paper dresses, swimsuits and fun accessories from the 60s. I'd never heard of this trend prior so it was very cool to see & informational. The fireflies room was beautiful - a pitch black room with mirrors and lights which created an infinity feeling. The museum ended up being much bigger than I thought it would be and the pricing was very reasonable. I really enjoyed all of it. You could definitely make a full day out of it & they have a restaurant and gift shop on site too. read more

Its a great way to get your steps in and stay cool in the Phoenix heat. Plus its a cheap date on Wednesdays. There's a variety of art pieces there, so there's something for everybody. My 2500th review goes to this fantastic museum. I had a great time exploring here. Some pieces still have me thinking. Some pieces had me laughing. Some taught me so much. Some had me nostalgic. It's definitely a must whether you're visiting or living in Phoenix. Went on a Wednesday afternoon where it's supposed to be free 3-9, but Lisa at the counter made it sound like it's $7 a person, so we paid. This was weird. The first floor had the special exhibits, modern art, and Asian art. Here, you can see art from so long ago, which is unbelievable that this exists here in the middle of Phoenix. The second floor had North American art, South American European art, and fashion. I loved the Americana feel and culture. I also saw some Picasso, Chagall, and O'Keeffe, among so many others. Who would've thought?! The third floor was the most fun one. The modern and contemporary paintings and sculptures were so colorful and unique, and they even had Yayoi Kusama's light installation in the corner! There's also a photography exhibit that you need your ticket to enter. There is also a super cool gift shop in the lobby and a beautiful sculpture garden to check out outside! Overall, loved it and would love to come back to check out more exhibits and art! read more

It was a rainy day in PHX and we needed something indoor to do, we decided to visit the museum and got our tickets online. I was really interested in the MR: exhibit since he's was a student under Murakami another Japanese artist that I adore. We spend the most time here because it was so unique, kawaii and I love anime in general. Another must do is the Yayoi Kusama Fireflies Infinity Mirror Room. Unlike the Broad in LA, no reservation require and you can walk right in. Just be careful because I did see someone walk straight into a mirror. *ouch* This is a great place to spend 60-90 mins here while you are in town. I also love the gift store and I picked up some cute cactus thank you cards as souvenirs. read more

I've been to PHX art museum about a dozen times. The exhibit this month (September21) was better than most others despite several parts of the museum being closed. The Yayo Kusama firefly display was super cool and trippy. I was lucky enough to see another one of her displays in Aspen 2 years ago. That's equivalent to seeing like 2 total eclipses in 2 years so that was a win. The black n white retrospective photo exhibition by Palfi was the most moving thing I saw. Some photos gave me goosebumps n chills down my spine as they clearly illustrated the economic, racial, and social inequalities throughout the US (not too long ago). The "Violet Protest" was creative. The artist is hoping to present her textiles to congress. The red and blue (purple) is meant to symbolize unity and is a protest again political divisiveness. I support that 100. If I had any artistic talent at all I would contribute. I'm happy I went again. Going to the PHX art museum always seems to be a therapeutic experience. Went for First Friday and the exhibit of Fearless Fashion of Rudi Gernreich. First trip to this place & I was honestly blown away by it. It's so spacious & the exhibits are amazing. The detailing is phenomenal. There is just enough information to whet your appetite & enough for you to do some research. I can definitely see the value in becoming a member of this museum. Each exhibition was uniquely crafted and beautifully displayed. I could spend hours here appreciating the beauty created here. If you haven't seen this unique exhibit by Rudi Gernreich, you should. Some of it was breathtaking & others gave me pause but were unique & interesting. I found it fascinating how so much of the fashion from then can be seen in today's fashion. Also, interesting was how he described the fashion being unisex & how true that is today. Truly fascinating. read more

Came on a Free Friday, with some family from out of town. Crowded and yet not at the same time. Exhibits are spread out enough that the number of people from a packed parking lot did not feel like we were all elbow to elbow. Museum boasts having pieces from "Renaissance to the present." The majority of what we saw was contemporary and modern art. Yayoi Kusama's installation was my favorite part of the museum. It is immersive. What starts with a fear of the unknown gives way to a relaxing and joyous experience. Making art of art, I had fun taking different shots of the lights. Staff was helpful and friendly. Museum was easy to navigate. While multiple floors, there are several elevators and stairs. One person with us was in a wheelchair. He felt like he able to see most of the museum without problems. read more

Had a few hours to kill before my flight and the Phoenix Art Museum was the perfect fit for that. Thumbs up for free parking. Admission is reasonable for adults and everyone working there was friendly and helpful. The museum is big enough to spend 2-3 hours but not too big where I would start to feel overwhelmed. There's a healthy mix of different types of art so there's something for everyone (miniature rooms, photography, impressionist paintings, religious artifacts etc). read more

I've thoroughly enjoyed this museum ever since I moved here, visiting it at least a couple of times a year. Special exhibits usually change out in the Fall and Spring so those are the best times to come. Voluntary-Donation Admission are days when general admission is free, and special exhibits are discounted. These are the first friday (6-10pm) of every month usually they also have a live performance. During one First Friday event, I remember Samba dancers putting on an excellent show right at the entrance. Another "free day" is the second Sunday of every month, this is Discount Tire Free Family Sunday (noon-5pm). And they partner with the Phoenix Public Library, dancing troupes, among others for an eventful Sunday. There are also Pay-What-You-Wish Wednesdays (3-9pm). If you can't make it on the days previously mentioned don't worry, pricing is fairly reasonable, for general admission, adults are around $20, with Senior Citizens, Students, Youth, and Children all being less than that. However, if you find yourself coming back multiple times a year, membership can be more economical. Membership for 1 year for 2 adults is $80, and a family is $90. Throughout the years my favorite work of art here has been "Ponder" by Deborah Butterfield, a horse sculpture which is made from what most of us would consider to be junk, scraps of wood, wire, things you would see on the side of the road - given new life in this lovely horse sculpture. Another piece I love is the, "You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies" by Yayoi Kusama. When you enter, it's difficult to find the exit and that's the magic of it - now this magic is not made with smoke and mirrors but dim LEDs and mirrors. It's quite an experience, it's what the museum calls an "infinity mirror room." My favorite special exhibit so far has been the "Legends of Speed", displaying winners of the Le Mans Grand Prix, Targa, GT, Sebring, Mille Miglia, Can-Am, Indianapolis 500, and Formula One. An excellent, varied collection showcasing a 1911 Franklin (won the Desert Race) to the 1968 Ford GT40 and many beauties in between including a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO. My favorite collection is the "The Thorne Miniature Rooms" which take you through history via miniatures of homes from the 13th Century to the 1930's, they're absolutely stunning, it feels like you're peeking back into history. Clearly I could go on and on about this museum, but in reality you just need to see it for yourself, bring your most pensive expression and your uninhibited curiosity and let the Phoenix Art Museum do the rest! read more

I did like the look of the art museum from the outside and once inside there is ample room for displaying some spectacular pieces of art. Unfortunately, I didn't feel like the art enriched the space as well as it should have done. There are a number of paintings by famous artists. Mostly only one or two pieces of art for any one artist. It does house a fairly diverse collection of paintings from all over the world and from most time periods from about 1300 AD onwards. They do have regular revolving art shows--when I was there it was the photography of Carlos Munoz. It was interesting but not overly awe-inspiring. They do have a nice display of fashion, both modern and more traditional. What I felt was missing was a singular piece that could define the museum. The art museum is located right next to the Phoenix theater so there will be lots of parking, unless there is a matinee being performed. read more

I can't believe I've lived in Arizona for 12 years and have never gone to this museum. Don't wait as long as I did, because it's definitely worth more than one visit! A friend and I went to see the lowrider exhibit. There were a vareity of displays from a wall of lowrider magazines to the huge car pinata. The museum space is huge! And there's something for everyone. I watched a guy studying the detailed painting on Ceylon ceramics. There were oil painting displays. There was a children's story time with puppets. We were entranced with the paper dresses display. First of all, we had never heard of this trend, which lasted for four years, but other friends on the east coast knew all about it. I was able to get two free tickets through the Maricopa County library system. If you go, plan to spend at least a couple of hours. We spent an hour and a half there and it wasn't enough time. This is the emptiest museum I have ever visited. So much open, empty space--there is so much art out in the world! Bring it to Phoenix, please! Tons of potential here, however, it is lacking creative content. For two tickets totaling $52.00, I was expecting more enticing material. The retail souvenir store was on-point though! I mean... $30!???? Come on.. even NYC museums don't charge that much. There were a lot of galleries that were being rehabbed. The restaurant was closed for renovations. The stuff that was there was sparse. Barbie was cool, but needed more space. Poorly designed space (cramped!!!). I'm from NYC so I guess I take for granted that people know how to behave at museums. Not here. Listen lady, you don't stop in a narrow gallery space blocking the flow of people looking at the displays so you can take your baby in or out of a stroller!! Or stop to BS with your group of 8 friends while people are trying to keep moving while they look at the art. Holy entitlement!!!! MOVE to the side!! The level of self centered behavior is outstanding. You're not the only person on the planet!! Hello!?? So annoying. In short, not worth $30. Expand the galleries, have more offerings on display, and for god sake when you have a popular special exhibit, give it the space it deserves!!! read more

After enjoying an eventful day in downtown Phoenix my best friend and I decided to make a trip to the Phoenix Art Gallery. The art gallery is not normally a place that I visit more than once or twice a year. I was extremely pleased by the activities that they had available and quickly realized that this venue should be visited more often. They offer an assortment of discounts and I greatly appreciated the fact that one qualified for a student discount even though they are taking graduate courses. I've never though about getting a member but after noting they apply the money you spent on your ticket that day towards your membership fee I highly recommend it. Today we were in luck as one of the main galleries centered around old cars. The room walked you through the beginning phases of the automobile journey and left you in awe as you saw the original makings of some very well known cars. The variety of art that is presented here allows everyone to enjoy something. From traditional art to media art there is representation of all facades. I greatly enjoyed the media art during this visit. There was one in particular that made me lean forward with anticipation. I found myself rooting for the survival of this innate objects and the scenery was intense. Prepare to spend some time here. I think in all it took us about 2.5 hours to get through the entire gallery read more

I thought it was smaller than other museums I've visited however I really liked the firefly infinity mirror exhibition by Yayoi Kusama and Marion Palfi's "Freedom must be lived" exhibition. If the Phoenix theater has a matinee show it could be difficult to get a spot out front in lot. It was hot but I walked around the block but that led me to discover Giant Coffee ( a shop with great pie) and A Cancer Survivors Park next door to shop. I digress. Super spacious lobby with a walkway to sculptures and other art presentations. I spent 3 leisurely hours here but had I come earlier might've seen more. There were little workshops and dance performances to watch. I enjoyed what I saw and look forward to a return visit. read more

Love, love , love art museums. A metro area this size should have a phenomenal art museum, but sadly, this one does not. Poor utilization of space and quite a challenge to get around as the second floors are disconnected from each other. I mean, who is responsible for signing off on that one? The special exhibits are okay, but the permanent collections are a huge letdown. The best thing I discovered during my recent visit were the gallery wall colors. Nice. But hardly worth the price of admission. Feeling artsy though? Visit the Mesa Museum of Contemporary Art, the ASU Art Museum, or the Heard Museum. Much better options. read more

It's been a while since I've been to an art museum and the Phoenix Art Museum did not disappoint. This large, sprawling museum is almost a piece of art in itself as it has a unique layout that can at times be a little confusing but that's part of the fun. We saw the entire museum while we were there but we found the current Oscar Munoz exhibit to be highly engaging with the artist's pull on the perspective of the viewer being an interesting experience. The firefly exhibit was our favorite part though. We had a great time in that little corner of the museum. The miniatures section was also really neat and we spent some time in there talking about all the detail and nuance that went into creating such tiny recreations of historical scenes. All of the staff we encountered while in the museum were kind, polite, and friendly. We even found the art exhibit that featured staff art and found that to be an awesome thing for the museum to do. It was kind of cool to get to see the artistic expression of the people who work there. I wish more museums would do that. It makes them more human. Beautifully kept building and grounds. Parking is ample and free. It's close to a lot of places in walking distance to grab a bite if you don't feel like visiting the cafe. The store is well appointed. It was overall a great experience and I look forward to coming back to see what else they have in store in the future. read more

Ticket prices are reasonable and discounts are available for certain ages, students, and military. If you want to support the museum, I highly recommend to become a member because the price is amazing. This safe haven is a perfect place to have your introvert moments to absorb beautiful creations from fine art, sculptures, fashion, installations, and film. The museum is huge with a lot different floors to explore a variety of exhibitions. Although sections here are smaller than other museums in the states, the curation is a treat for those who want to indulge in the arts. I really enjoyed their 3-D installations since they have a big space to showcase large works of art. This art museum has various selections to view: Asian historic artifacts, traditional European art, Sikh art, contemporary art, Latin art, and massive fine art paintings and sculptures. They also feature the famous Yayoi Kusama here! So glad I was able to catch her lights installation during these trying times... Gift shop inside with garden outside as well. Bathrooms available.
