Pho chay
Vanessa H.

Disappointed! Pho is one of my favorite dishes and I usually come in with high expectations. Ordered the veggie spring rolls and the pho chay (vegetarian pho). The spring rolls were delicious. They were completely fried and filled with veggies and served with a peanut sauce. The spring rolls were delicious and the best part of the meal. I don't expect vegetarian pho to be as flavorful as a traditional pho broth, but this broth was extremely lackluster. There wasn't any depth and it was underwhelming to say the least. The noodles were thick rice noodles which are not ideal for pho. Furthermore there just wasn't much in the dish.

This place is very dirty, you walk in to the smell of body door and the floor looks like it hasn't been swept in days. The spring rolls tasted like what you would expect eating a foot to taste like. The spicy pho was sweet with some spice of nutmeg or clove that was very strange. Maybe would work as a special flavour during Christmas. Disappointing all around.

I'm giving 4 stars for service.. the staff are very cool and nice. And I like the decor. They lose a star based on value. I chose a higher priced beef noodle dish that was good, but not highlighted with the premium beef I paid for. With a small coke (2.50). my meal was over 12.00 which is not shocking for London but a tad high for a weekday lunch with no special occasion. Food-wise, it was an interesting take on a familiar dish and while I liked it, I also didn't love it. There wasn't a star item. Nothing punched its way out. I'd go back, but would also look at some other places in the hood.

Pho is a brilliant place for lunch and casual dinner. I have been here several times and even taken friends here. What keeps me coming back is that the food is always tasty and very healthy. The staff are friendly and the prices are really great - I never manage to spend more than £20 on dinner for two here even when we're having lots of choices. The phos are very tasty (have the spicy one if you like real spice) and I also love the buns (noodles with hot toppings), which are huge and delicious. They have a Vietnamese chef here or so I am told so I guess that is what makes the food so good. You get a really nice decor too, without the crap ugly almost food hall style you get in some Vietnamese restaurants.

A craving for Pho while in central London, brought me to this small restaurant. I would classify it as modern Vietnamese. The dishes are updated from the traditional bare-bones noodle soup shop. There is a decent variety of soups to choose from with some less common variations containing tofu and mushrooms, or just three varieties of mushrooms. There is also Bun (vermicelli noodles and toppings) as well as some very yummy Viertnamese curry! At 7.45 for a good bowl of Pho Tai, this is a perfect place for a quick lunch or dinner. For lunch I had Goi Cuon Tom, which was delicious and freshly wrapped along with a bowl of Pho Tai Chin. The ingredients were fresh, tasty and the soup was great!

Ventured in today with a friend who works in the area. I had seen the menu before hand so kind of knew what I was getting. We arrived early to beat the rush, it's a small compact place. Best to get here early for a table especially during lunch rush hour. Everything is described properly on the menu, as it was so cold today I opted for the Ph tôm with a veggie broth. Base broth of lemongrass, ginger, lime and different veggies with tiger prawns. A large bowl was placed in front of me with thick noodles and extra side of veggies for the noodle soup. I was impressed by the size, not so impressed on the bland broth. I added the garlic vinegar, extra lime, chilli oil and paste and sirarcha sauce to it. Then it was much better! The extra herbs of mint and coriander really helped to bring out the flavours. As I couldn't finish it, they packed it up for me in a secure tub which was then tied inside a plastic bag to prevent spillage. They also kindly added extra prawns which are £1.75 extra and the veggies are an extra £1.00. Overall a nice place for Vietnamese food. It's more of a street food style menu, but nonetheless still tasty and value for money. The staff are nice too!

It's not just 54 that keeps my taste buds titillated. Pho Cafe provides a cute, reasonably priced Vietnamese outside of Kingsland Road. Here's their mission statement: The short menu means that we can specialise in a small number of Vietnamese street foods and ensure that everything is made in house from the highest quality ingredients and is bursting with fresh flavours. We don't buy in pre-packaged processed meatballs and frozen spring rolls instead our Vietnamese chefs make everything using authentic recipes. Our pho takes up to 12 hours to prepare and it's this care that is key to the stock retaining its goodness and developing its subtle and distinctive taste. This place is also great for the gluten free, dairy free, fat free and the allergy ridden amongst you. No carbs can equal happiness, ask Dr Atkins!

The pho was delicious but not that authentic. Staff was really nice except for one (maybe he had a bad day). The price was good. Overall 4/5

It's a chain, but they deserve success for serving consistently good, fresh and interesting food.

Good food and a nice atmosphere even though some of the waitresses need more training...

Pho has limited, short menu but whatever they serve they do it perfectly. Their noodle soup and the chicken papaya salad was amazingly done.

Not authentic and got our order wrong on the phone. The pho (which we didn't try) may perhaps be better.

Made a reservation online and I was able to be seated upon arrival. Dining is available at the kitchen counter, bar, or in the basement dining room. Managed to get a seat by the kitchen counter and it was a very warm experience sitting in front of the grill. Bring a mask if one is sensitive to spices! The waitstaff were lovely and spent time explaining the menu that changes daily. Started off with the chicken and soy along with the rump with ubon relish and they were both excellent. The chicken thigh was grilled to perfection and super flavorful from the marination. The rump was cooked to perfection at a medium rare and the flavors were on point. The chef that made this personally presented this to me at the counter. Amazing! The glass noodles were fragrant and tasty. The crab portion was minimal and the pork belly had a smell to it... ~£30/head including VAT and service for lunch. Once seated, the food does arrive fairly quickly and I did enjoy the dim ambiance in the intimate downstairs space (upstairs is bar seating). The food was good, but I don't get the hype. The glass noodles were my favorite dish especially the green sauce that comes with it (pour it all!), and the rest didn't particularly stand out.

My daughter found this restaurant online and what a find!. My daughter called to see if they could take our party very last minute. They were very accommodating and had table ready for us when we arrived 20 minutes later. Food was AMAZING! Some of the best flavors and dishes we have ever had. Staff was so nice, so helpful, so appreciative. The owner came to our table to thank us for coming in. She told us some of her history in Vietman and her love of cooking is so apparent. We were looking for good food. We found GREAT food in a fantastic place. Will definitely go back when we visit London next. I won't say the food is here truly 'authentic,' but I still think it tastes really unique. The beef pho has a minty-tasting broth and the meat peels right off the bone. The broth has a lot of flavor- heavy on spices, and isn't as loaded with sodium (menu says they don't use MSG). Also, the lemontrass tiger prawns are delicious. Islington is a bit far from the town, but it's cool to venture out here with an Uber or black cab just to switch up from the mainstream tourist hubs of London.
