Pho chay
Vanessa H.

Disappointed! Pho is one of my favorite dishes and I usually come in with high expectations. Ordered the veggie spring rolls and the pho chay (vegetarian pho). The spring rolls were delicious. They were completely fried and filled with veggies and served with a peanut sauce. The spring rolls were delicious and the best part of the meal. I don't expect vegetarian pho to be as flavorful as a traditional pho broth, but this broth was extremely lackluster. There wasn't any depth and it was underwhelming to say the least. The noodles were thick rice noodles which are not ideal for pho. Furthermore there just wasn't much in the dish.

This place is very dirty, you walk in to the smell of body door and the floor looks like it hasn't been swept in days. The spring rolls tasted like what you would expect eating a foot to taste like. The spicy pho was sweet with some spice of nutmeg or clove that was very strange. Maybe would work as a special flavour during Christmas. Disappointing all around.

I'm giving 4 stars for service.. the staff are very cool and nice. And I like the decor. They lose a star based on value. I chose a higher priced beef noodle dish that was good, but not highlighted with the premium beef I paid for. With a small coke (2.50). my meal was over 12.00 which is not shocking for London but a tad high for a weekday lunch with no special occasion. Food-wise, it was an interesting take on a familiar dish and while I liked it, I also didn't love it. There wasn't a star item. Nothing punched its way out. I'd go back, but would also look at some other places in the hood.

Pho is a brilliant place for lunch and casual dinner. I have been here several times and even taken friends here. What keeps me coming back is that the food is always tasty and very healthy. The staff are friendly and the prices are really great - I never manage to spend more than £20 on dinner for two here even when we're having lots of choices. The phos are very tasty (have the spicy one if you like real spice) and I also love the buns (noodles with hot toppings), which are huge and delicious. They have a Vietnamese chef here or so I am told so I guess that is what makes the food so good. You get a really nice decor too, without the crap ugly almost food hall style you get in some Vietnamese restaurants.

A craving for Pho while in central London, brought me to this small restaurant. I would classify it as modern Vietnamese. The dishes are updated from the traditional bare-bones noodle soup shop. There is a decent variety of soups to choose from with some less common variations containing tofu and mushrooms, or just three varieties of mushrooms. There is also Bun (vermicelli noodles and toppings) as well as some very yummy Viertnamese curry! At 7.45 for a good bowl of Pho Tai, this is a perfect place for a quick lunch or dinner. For lunch I had Goi Cuon Tom, which was delicious and freshly wrapped along with a bowl of Pho Tai Chin. The ingredients were fresh, tasty and the soup was great!

Ventured in today with a friend who works in the area. I had seen the menu before hand so kind of knew what I was getting. We arrived early to beat the rush, it's a small compact place. Best to get here early for a table especially during lunch rush hour. Everything is described properly on the menu, as it was so cold today I opted for the Ph tôm with a veggie broth. Base broth of lemongrass, ginger, lime and different veggies with tiger prawns. A large bowl was placed in front of me with thick noodles and extra side of veggies for the noodle soup. I was impressed by the size, not so impressed on the bland broth. I added the garlic vinegar, extra lime, chilli oil and paste and sirarcha sauce to it. Then it was much better! The extra herbs of mint and coriander really helped to bring out the flavours. As I couldn't finish it, they packed it up for me in a secure tub which was then tied inside a plastic bag to prevent spillage. They also kindly added extra prawns which are £1.75 extra and the veggies are an extra £1.00. Overall a nice place for Vietnamese food. It's more of a street food style menu, but nonetheless still tasty and value for money. The staff are nice too!

It's not just 54 that keeps my taste buds titillated. Pho Cafe provides a cute, reasonably priced Vietnamese outside of Kingsland Road. Here's their mission statement: The short menu means that we can specialise in a small number of Vietnamese street foods and ensure that everything is made in house from the highest quality ingredients and is bursting with fresh flavours. We don't buy in pre-packaged processed meatballs and frozen spring rolls instead our Vietnamese chefs make everything using authentic recipes. Our pho takes up to 12 hours to prepare and it's this care that is key to the stock retaining its goodness and developing its subtle and distinctive taste. This place is also great for the gluten free, dairy free, fat free and the allergy ridden amongst you. No carbs can equal happiness, ask Dr Atkins!

Delicious and quick service! Both the fresh summerrolls and the bananablossom salad (?) were excellent.

Review Highlights - Pho

Mint, basil, coriander and lime came neatly wrapped in a plastic bag along with my takeaway order, with a little chopped chilli in the nobule at the knot.

I don't think I'll be back, and I wouldn't recommend this unless you were extremely uncultured and didn't know what real Asian food was like. Non-Asian folks may love this place - so take other reviews with a grain of salt (I personally am shocked at how highly rated this place is). The missus rates it lower than me (3/5 from me), so I give this place her rating cuz we were both... very sad about this. Missus and I showed up at 4pm on a Saturday in May. It was hella busy when we arrived, but quickly emptied out after we started getting our food. This place claims its Thai but they only have the spice part down... I doubt this is actually authentic. Maybe it's Southeast Asian inspired?? If anyone else knows please comment. The portion sizes are predictably small, and I don't think we ordered enough for two to be full, even though it was quite pricey (given the portion size). We ordered the rump cap, curry, clay pot, and a lager to drink. Nothing was that memorable - the rump cap was well made but the curry definitely made us question the cultural authenticity of this place. I wouldn't order the curries here - the meat dishes seem decent though. The ambiance in here is definitely loud, since sound carries - any conversation gets amplified and you can hear every word - even the annoying laughs or coughs are at volume 11 (so try to keep your voices down!). There's a background music track but it's faint and you can only barely hear it when anyone is talking. The restaurant layout is very good for communal dining, but really bad for intimate settings. If I were a dating man (I'm not), I wouldn't bring a date here. The service is also extremely slow - from when we ordered to when we got all of our food was roughly 45 min - which, given how hungry we were, and how empty the place was - inexcusable and really disappointing. Note: mandatory 12.5% service charge on top of your meal.

Food was excellent. Unique flavours and very well priced. Service was also very good, great…read morerecommendations. Lovely vibe in the restaurant.
