My Mr. was on his way back home from Kayaking with his friends from work and noticed a plant shop in the Newtown area. He knew instantly that I wanted to check this place out. So we did the next day after he told me. I've never heard of it so I'm glad I can share my experience so others can check out this amazing place as well! It's a small shop, but has so much to offer. They specialize in tropical plants. Philodendrons, Pothos, Hoyas, rubber trees, rare plants and more! Rianna, (sorry if I misspelled your name) was such a friendly person, helpful and super knowledgeable! We talked for a long time. Sharing Plant experiences and what we owned. Besides plants, they sell soil, pots, accessories, gift ideas and more. Their prices are reasonable. Plus the store is very organized and plants are super healthy. I ended up purchasing a 4" Monstera Peru (always wanted one) and a 3" Hoya Sp. Burtonai. With that I ordered a plant sticker and pin. I highly recommend you check them out. While heading to a kayaking outing for my work recently, I happened to drive by this spot, and seeing all the plants in the windows, I had to see what it was. Turns out, it was a plant shop, and since my lady loves plants, I knew I wanted to take her there. Was I glad I did? Definitely! It's a relatively small shop, but they have lots to offer. All sorts of unique stuff plants, plant accessories, plant shirts, tote bags, stickers, and more. Everything was prices very nicely too. Rhianna (I hope I spelled that right, my apologies to her if I didn't) was immensely friendly and knowledgeable. The entire place had a very positive feel. My lady ended up buying two plants, a cool sticker, and a pin all for great prices. I could certainly recommend this plant shop to any plant fan, whether just starting out or well experienced. I wish I could give 0 stars. This review is from a shipment order. I haven't been in her store so I can't say anything about it, but if you are thinking about having a plant shipped to you STAY AWAY!! I found this seller on Facebook in August '19 because I was looking for an Albo Monstera. She was extremely nice at first, and said that I couldn't pick my plant since they would be similar but that she would sent pictures by 12/10/19 to decide if I wanted a refund. Weird, but fair enough so I pay for it. That day comes around, no word from her so I message her. Says she will send me a picture once she gets to her greenhouse. No picture again, so I ask again. This happened about 3 times. When she finally sends a picture, the plant was not what I expected but looked healthy so fine I agree to it. Now the sketchiness happens. She says she cannot ship the plant due to weather. Fair enough, it is December and she lives in Ohio. Maybe she should've thought about that before taking shipment deposits? However, this goes on until January. It was all "explanation points" and "happy face emojis" until I started questioning what was going on. Then all niceness flew out the window. Like, hello lady am I not entitled to an explanation after already paying for the plant? It's not some Pothos you get at your local Home Depot. Finally the plant arrived 2/1/20, and boy was this the most pathetic plant I've ever laid eyes on. First of all, it was NOT the plant she sent a picture of. Second, it was BURNT, BENT, and YELLOWING. The packaging literally looked like a 3 year old packed it. It was in a box 3 times the plant's size, her "heat packs" were two hand warmers (the kind you get from dollar tree, which by the way left burn marks on both leaves), there was cotton that looked like she took it out of a stuffed animal, and the roots were wrapped in Saran Wrap and showing early signs of root rot. I immediately messaged her, and she had no sympathy whatsoever because she claimed the plant roots looked healthy. Are you crazy?! I paid for a healthy plant, not a plant that needed the hands of God to save. She offered me a sad $50 refund, which by the way NEVER came through. Less than a week later, the root rot really sets in even after trimming off the bad roots. I let her know I want a full refund and she refuses and has the audacity to ask me, "do you even know how to care for albos?" Umm no I just paid over $200 for a plant for fun! This woman has ZERO experience in shipping plants. The plant is now completely dead even after bringing it to my trusted plant store to help save it. Now I'm having the bank deal with it. This seller is a liar, horrible communicator, and a terrible person who is only looking to make a quick buck. She is a new business owner and it shows with her lack of customer service and inflexible refund policy. She is another seller just taking advantage of the booming plant scene and popularity of the Albo Monstera. My biggest mistake was not trusting my instincts from the beginning. Unfortunately the owner is quite dishonest and hard to work with, I did want to have a good business relationship because I do have a large budget for plant purchases but she made it nearly impossible to trust her. I was very kind during what turned into be a 5+ month ordeal with my orders mysteriously getting lost in the mail repeatedly, again I was still very understanding and asked for a refund which then took nearly constant reminding for over a month before finally I received my refund. Philo has rarer cooler plants than you'll find at any of the other shops in town. Savannah the owner is super nice and helpful. Additionally, the prices are super reasonable compared to other stores and sellers of rare plants. Not to mention when I stopped in the shop during the BLM protests I saw cases of water and a first aid kit as she was preparing to aid protesters. Love this little shop! read more

editing to add: I now have so many plants from here! I wanted to add that i've continued having positive experiences with Savannah at Philo. In the beginning of winter, she offered to take preorders for monstera albos that would be here in about 2 weeks from her post. I paid upfront for it, but there was an issue with two shipments (root rot, low variegation, plants in bad shape) before Savannah decided to issue a refund. The refund didn't go through in the time period it was supposed to (2 weeks) due to some technical issue, so Savannah ended up just giving me the cash back. Just sharing to say, if you think something is going/has gone wrong, make sure you're communicating! She's always been super responsive to my messages and eventually everything was sorted. I've visited the shop numerous times, and I love just looking at all the neat plants she has in stock! She is very responsive and attentive and I will for sure be coming back for more plants :) read more

I. Love. This. Place. The owner of the shop is one of the kindest, most helpful people I've met. She is incredibly knowledgeable about plant care and has even helped me troubleshoot issues I was having with my own plants at home. There is a very wide of selection of hard-to-find plants in the store as well as online (you can order via Facebook). We have purchased hoyas, monstera, peperomia, tetrasperma, begonia, and calathea from the shop at really great prices. The plants are all beautiful and healthy and I highly recommend shopping here! read more

Wish I could give no stars. Stay away from Philo in Cincinnati. I ordered a full pot of Yellowstone back on 7/30 when it shipped. I was constantly reaching out for a tracking number, I finally got one (3 weeks in) and USPS was delayed (normal, I dealt with it), but I just got my package and I am beyond livid. They never stated I was getting 2, horribly packaged bare root plants?! I had ordered a full pot. I am reaching out again, but I am not even being hopeful for any type of refund at this point with the horrible communication just requesting a tracking number. read more

A friend told me about Philo Cincinnati. It is home to a very unique selection of scarce and difficult to collect house-plants. This can make a thoughtful gift for someone who can care for it properly. This little hole-in-the-wall shop is tucked on Main Street downtown in trendy Over-the Rhine business district. You can reach them on Face book, the sales hours are usually mid-day. You can really see the quality of exotic leaf on the picture section. I think giving a plant as a gift is always very personal. read more

I made an online purchase with an accidental shipping charge (express so it was $30). I contacted them right away & was assured I would be refunded for the shipping within 5-7 business days since I was just picking the plants up. I have emailed the person several times about still not receiving a refund & just keep getting no where. I understand everyone is doing their best during Covid but this is ridiculous. Philo has to be one of the coolest plant stores around Cincinnati. There are many plants in stock that are not your "normal" houseplants, like ones you may find at Lowes or even a nursery. The store front is full of plants! The plants are also reasonably priced compared to if you were to find that same plant on Etsy or Ebay so that is another plus! I personally have bought two plants from Philo in the past. I bought them online and they were shipped to me. They arrived to me quick and healthy! I have absolutely no complaints about Philo and I totally recommend them to anyone looking for a unique houseplant. read more

I ordered plants online from Savannah in January. Was mailed in February. Never received my plants. Nothing on tracking past the intial scan, I contacted her and let her know the package was missing, and ask for help filing an insurance claim. She offered to replace the plants. She mailed them on 3/16th but tracking still shows preshipmen. Owner claims she's had to help 16 of her customers file an insurance claim on lost/missing packages in the last 30 days. My girlfriend and I have been to many plant shops around Ohio and always come back to Philo. They have an awesome selection and outside of the plants they have in the shop they have more online. I purchased many plants from them and they were and have always been very healthy. No one has a better selection than Philo and the owners are amazing people! There are several great reviews for this shop from people who have shopped in store, but I wanted to share my experience with their online ordering/shipping option because it has turned out to be the worst customer service I think I've ever received. I ordered a plant in the beginning of November, and it has not arrived as I'm writing this a week before Christmas. This seller's communications have been very inconsistent - they only responded to a couple of my emails, and when they did, the information they gave me did not line up with previous messaging. I received a notification that my order status had changed to "shipped" about a month after placing the order, but received no tracking number. I received a response to my second email asking about tracking info (10 days after the shipping notification) that my order was packed and ready to ship the next day and that I would also receive a tracking number that day. That was a few days ago and I haven't received a response to either of my follow-up emails. I understand that this is a crazy year, and a particularly stressful time of year, but given that there are reviews here from people with similar shipping/communication experiences, I feel like I'm not overreacting. If you don't live near a plant store and really want to order some online, save yourself the headache and order from Canopy Plant Co. Their packages arrive in great condition and they're very good with communicating about any delays and answering any questions you might have. read more

Description of Complaint: I purchased 4 plants from this shop on 5/15. The site advertised a 7 day turn around and required a $10 shipping fee, however, I received half of my order over 2.5 weeks later on 6/1. When the order was received the plants were damaged with broken stems and several lost leaves. Some leaf loss was to be expected, however, to this extent was quite concerning. I reached out to the store and spoke with the owner regarding only receiving part of my order as well as sent pictures of the extent of the damage of the plants. I was ensured that this was not the norm of the business and that the rest of my order would be shipped the next day. More than a week later on 6/9 I still had not received my order and reached out to the owner regarding my continued concerns, the owner Savannah, explained that there were delays due to COVID-19 and offered me a $20 refund on my $69 order, for my inconvenience. I explained to Savannah that I understood the effects of COVID however the lack of communication and unrealistic time frames left me very disappointed. On 6/18, I still had not received the other half of my order. I again reached out to Savannah, and stated I would drive to the store, which was more than an hour from my home for ease of obtaining the rest of my order. Savannah promptly informed me she would give me a full refund and sent me a screenshot of the processed refund. On 6/28 I still had not received my refund and I informed the owner of not receiving the refunded monies. This Business has not delivered on my order or my refund and I am very disappointed and would like this issue resolved promptly. read more

Cute little shop in the heart of downtown Cincy! I have bought several plant babies from Philo and recommend. The owner is very knowledgeable about the most common of plants to super rare ones. It's nice to have a local place to find rare plants. The plants are of different price ranges and sizes to accommodate different budgets. I ordered a cactus and specifically asked if I was getting the one in the photo, and was told I was. I left a $10 delivery tip up front, which was a 24% tip. I was given a 3 day delivery window that ended on a Monday; so I made sure someone was home and expecting the package those days. When it didn't arrive, I checked in to make sure something hadn't happened to my order, and was told "our truck was a day late and "it'll be this week". The following week I checked in again since I still hadn't received it, and was told "it'll be this week". That week passed and I still hadn't gotten it, so I checked in... again... and she told me I'd have by the next day (today). I did get a cactus today and since I finally got a cactus, I'll give 2 stars instead of 1. But it is most definitely not the same cactus in the photo--which would be fine except that I specifically asked and was specifically told yes, therefore disappointing to get a less ornate cactus that what was promised. And delays happen, so the two week delay would have been fine too, except that I wasn't receiving honest responses. Poor & dishonest customer service. I have over 100 houseplants and I've been to many many plant stores in that accumulation. This one will never get my business again. Don't lie to your customers, just be honest. read more
