Guy seemed really nice. The Philly was great, and I don't even normally love phillies, much less mushrooms. I wish it had more hot sauce too, but oh well! We stumbled into Philly Steak & Subs and it was exactly what we were looking for, for a quick lunch. The man behind the counter was friendly and started off by asking us if we wanted fries since they take a bit longer and he wanted to get them in the fryer. We opted in for onion rings! My husband and I split the 12inch and it was plenty for both of us for lunch. My husband noted that it seems like they make their own bread here since they at least bake it off fresh with all the bread pans we saw. Its a no frills cheesesteak place that only has like 4 subs on the menu which i dont think ill ever try because the cheesesteak is real good. They are also very cheap and the staff is always super nice. be sure you are calling the right one for a takeout location as they have two locations and they always make sure I know which one im calling because i guess thats a problem. Well folks! I finally had the opportunity to try the Philly's here. I was disappointed. Not much flavor. Quality of meat is comparable with the price. The fries were good but not the kind of fries I expected. These fries are almost battered. I like a Idaho potato in its purest form possible, then fried. These aren't it. The only place I found open nearby was the Philly Steak'n Subs, so they ended up getting my business. The sub I got from here was absolutely fantastic. I ordered it with extra jalapeños (I'm a fan) and the guy coked them along with the meat for my cheesesteak so all of the meat got a little bit of the flavor from the peppers (yum). I've been eating at this place since I was a senior in high school. There's a pretty simple reason behind the continued support of this restaurant; they don't skimp on the meat. If you're like me, you can't stand going somewhere like Quizno's or Jimmy John's, and getting 3lbs of lettuce with 3 thinly sliced pieces of steak on your steak sandwich. If I wanted a salad, I'd have ordered a salad... but I ordered a steak and cheese sandwich, so please, don't make me beg for the steak! There's not a lot of variety here; you've got your chicken and steak options for the meat, and a mild selection of vegetables (mushrooms, lettuce, peppers, onions, etc). However, despite the simplicity, they're great at what they do. You get a generous amount of meat, which is highly seasoned and full of flavor. I'd dare to say you won't find a better flavor for a Philly steak and cheese sandwich in all of Raleigh. You definitely won't leave hungry. Also, the food is prepared and served fresh. Fresh bread is baked frequently, the meat is marinading all day and then cooked right in front of you, etc. The downsides are essentially cosmetic. The place looks very dated; the walls are faded, the floors are old, the menu looks like it's 50 years old. It could definitely use an overhaul for the sake of appearance. But I wouldn't detract a point for that. The only reason I'm giving it a 4-star instead of a 5-star rating is because of the fries. They don't go well with the sandwich, and quite frankly, they're mediocre. There's no taste to them, and they're incredibly dissatisfying. Alternative side selections would bring it to a 5. A final note; while the taste is great, I wouldn't recommend the place for kids. The food is piping hot when it's served, and they might burn their hands picking through the sandwich. Good price and lots of meat on the sub but there was nothing great at all about it. The bread reminded me of White Castle's bread their burgers have. It was really soft and soaked up grease. The meat was pretty bland and there was hardly any cheese on it at all. If this place could at least learn to use cheese whiz when claiming to have "philly cheesesteaks" I think it would be worthy of 3 stars and if the meat didn't taste like generic steak-umm I would say 4 stars but they do not.
