This academy is not just a place to train it's a place where athletes are forged. Every competition I've entered, every win I've earned, and every lesson learned in loss has been shaped by the time, sweat, and intention poured into me by the coaching staff. Gustavo Dantas sets the standard. His attention to detail, pressure-tested techniques, and ability to see what an athlete needs before they see it themselves is elite. His leadership creates a culture where excellence is expected, not hoped for. Pro. Paul, Josh, Teague, and Jeff have each played a critical role in refining my game. From competition strategy, positional awareness, pressure management, and mental composure they consistently invested real time and energy into my growth. That level of coaching is rare. What separates this academy is that they don't just teach techniques they elevate competitors. They sharpen you, correct you, push you, and hold you to a higher standard because they genuinely care about your progress. I'm grateful for every round, every correction, every hard conversation, and every moment they chose to invest in me. The results show up on the mats, in competition, and in confidence. If you're serious about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu whether as a competitor or someone seeking mastery this is the place. Respect. Gratitude. Loyalty.

My experience of mistreatment and injury For context, I have…read moremy blue belt in BJJ, so the martial art is not new to me. I am more than a beginner but certainly not an expert. I am also aware that injuries happen, it's a martial art after all. However, I am also aware that experienced black belt instructors are not supposed to be reckless and hurt students. I am writing this review to warn others about the conduct I experienced at this gym. Conduct that appeared to me to be condoned and enabled by others. During my very first time rolling with Coach Ramsey Green, my clavicle was snapped into 3 pieces and I had to have surgery the next week to install a metal plate and 10 screws. This injury occurred less than a minute into the rolling session, which is normally about 5 minutes. When at his first two attempts he could not take me down, I sensed he lost his temper and became frustrated. He then aggressively took me down on my side and SLAMMED his body weight onto my opposite shoulder, causing serious injury. This is a ridiculous display of immaturity and ego that this gym claims to be against. Never in my 3+ years training in BJJ have I dealt with a coach so blatantly immature and aggressive. After getting home from the ER, I called the women's black belt coach, who happened to be there at the time of incident, to update her. During this call, she admitted that she had concerns about Ramsey herself, but was afraid to take them to anyone. She would jokingly say things like everyone has a "Ramsey arm" from being arm-barred too aggressively. And that Ramsey would have "revenge rolls" with others in class if he felt he didn't beat them on a previous roll. All this told me that his behavior was being enabled at least by her, and very likely the owner and other instructors as well. When I told the owner, Paul Nava, what happened, he made no efforts to assure me something like this would not happen at his gym again. There was no offer of support in any way and no offer of action to prevent this from happening again. His response was that Ramsey was given a "talking to." Whatever that meant, it certainly did not mean he was suspended from teaching in any way. To my second point: this gym boasts that they are all about supporting women in BJJ, however, when I brought the concerns to the women in a WhatsApp chat, I was immediately blocked from it. It became very clear to me that they were going to protect him and his reputation, not validate any of my concerns. I absolutely love BJJ with a passion, and I will not allow one reckless instructor to prevent me from continuing to train, but I will never train here again and I do not recommend it to anyone else. Sadly, I really enjoyed training here initially and thought I had made friends, but their response to my injury was a complete betrayal of my trust and extremely hurtful. If you are looking to train in BJJ, find a good gym that makes safety a priority, and does not just look the other way when a student is seriously injured. The very least a gym can do is to ensure that every student, no matter what rank, is practicing in a safe environment.

The facility, mats, changing room, restroom, and shower was immaculately clean. They had air conditioning and a water fountain. There is a separate room for changing and leaving your items in a cubby, so the side of the mat was tidy. The instructor, nicknamed Rasta, was a super friendly and funny brown belt. He was teaching a fundamentals class for white belts. But for us blue and brown belts, he showed us some extra stuff with the lapel called the "English handcuff." During the situational and open rolls, Rasta kept in mind our injuries, and found ways to control and tap us without being mean or being a bully. He showed us a lot of respect and humor. I would definitely come back if I'm ever in Scottsdale again!

Whether your goal is weight lose or becoming the next IBJJF World Champion, Team Beauregard can make those goals become reality. Many instructors claim to have the knowledge but very few have the proof. Ryan has achieved success in becoming a IBJJF World Champion. His facility in Mesa has produced many local, state and national champions. These achievements show his extreme dedication to the sport of jiu jitsu and the knowledge to take your game to the next level. The schedule at Beauregards is flexible and accommodating for any person with the desire to train. With classes scheduled on Mon, Weds, Fri, & Sat, Team Beaurgard makes it real hard to come up with an excuse to skip jiu jitsu. Still can't make it, Ryan and his instructors offer private lessons. So.. Why do I think Ryan is the best instructor in Phoenix? I have trained jiu jitsu for years before coming to Ryan. I had some difficulties in jiu jitsu given my unique body type. I decided this wasn't for me and tried other activities to attempt to stay in shape. I belong to a gym and even tried cross-fit. 14 months later I came to him 25# overweight and couldn't last 3 minutes on the mat due to my lack of cardio. 6 months later, I am the IBBJF Blue belt National Champion and down almost 30#. Being a prior service Marine, I can say that training jiu jitsu allows me to stay in the best shape of my life. For anyone even remotely interested in jiu jitsu, grappling, or just fitness (staying in shape) training jiu jitsu is the best workout you will EVER get. This review is for the children's Kung Fu Class. My daughter is a student and loves everything…read moreabout the Hung Fa Kwoon. Sifu Mark and Sihing Mike do a fantastic job teaching the kids the correct form and the importance of each movement. They're both very humble, patient, and always take the time to work with each student. Unlike some facilities that teach martial arts, this is not a "one size fits all" method of instruction where the teacher is up front shouting out commands and everyone is doing the same drill. Sifu Mark and Sihing Mike are great at keeping the kids engaged in their training--training which is focused on the individual and each student is assessed on their own abilities. I think it's important to mention a few things if you're thinking of enrolling your child in this Kwoon, so please keep in mind that Kung Fu is all about the merits of hard work. First, the warm-up, it's a 15-20 minute HIIT workout starting with laps around the room followed by a combination of exercises involving variations of push-ups, crunches, power jumps, squats, burpees, and different types of lunges to increase muscle strength for the legs, core, arms and shoulders. It's go time with one evolution after another. There's about a 30 second water break worked into the PT session, but the pace is designed to keep the heart rate up for stamina. If your kid needs to stop for a breather it's no big deal, there's no criticism, dishonor, or penalty, this is about building up their fitness level and these workouts are intended to push the envelope physically and mentally. This concludes with static and dynamic stretching for the cool down before your child's martial arts training really starts. Your kid will not be learning Wing Chun right away, every child must learn the basics of Chinese martial arts which involves training methods that are rooted very deeply in their tradition and inspired by Chinese philosophy. In this case, it's the mimicry of the Five Animals--physical training aimed at developing grace, power, speed, flexibility, and precision, all paired with balance. The basics are made up of rudimentary techniques, conditioning exercises, stances, breathing, simple movements, and proper body mechanics that are performed repeatedly. No matter what skill level your child is at, the basics are constantly revisited since they are the foundation for strong and flexible muscles that will enable your kid to progress to the more advanced stages. To succeed in this discipline, your kid will need patience, energy, practice, and time to learn every stance, block, strike, and kick. There are no shortcuts, but I believe you'll see the difference in your child's fitness level and self-confidence as time passes and they acquire new skills. Second, Hung Fa isn't limited to the biomechanics of a self-defense system, Sifu Mark and Sihing Mike actually spend time with the kids sharing the meaning of Kung Fu and its origin, and on the philosophical level, the importance of respect, integrity, and hard work. They show the kids the connection to daily life...that balance isn't just about staying on your feet, it's also about having balance and harmony in all aspects of one's life--family, school, friends, work, and play. Hard work isn't contained within the walls of the Kwoon, it's needed for everything if one wants to achieve. That's some pretty heavy dope for the kids, but they get it. Now with all this PT, Kung Fu training, and exposure to cultural diversity happening, Sifu and Sihing somehow manage to make it fun for the kids by keeping up the energy level when they demonstrate their own skills and explain how combinations can be put together with the moves the kids have been taught. This Kwoon is very supportive and encourages children to always be attentive, careful, and not be afraid to try something new. It's trendy for parents to enroll their kids in karate, it's almost a cliché. However, how often do those kids go the distance in such programs before they lose interest and become one of those teens who've forgotten everything they've learned as they hang out at the food court and tell their friends in passing "Yeah I took karate lessons once when I was a kid too..." Your child deserves better than that, if they've expressed an interest in martial arts why not give them a gift that will serve them well in life? I highly recommend the Hung Fa Yi Kwoon and hold the highest respect for Sifu Mark and Sihing Mike for passing on their experience to my daughter..."Yat! Yee! Saam!" "Hard work spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don't turn up at all." -Sam Ewing
