The first payment was for the euthanization of Kiwi Rose, and the second was for Kiwi to have a pawprint impression made, be cremated, and for her cremains to be returned to us. The cremation was to be performed by Patrick Vereb, owner of Eternity Pet Memorial, as recommended and arranged by River Valley Veterinary Hospital. Vereb sent Kiwi to a land fill, and we received unknown ashes in a ziplock bag from River Valley Veterinary Hospital. The Pennsylvania Attorney General has filed charges against Vereb. He also notified the affected veterinary practices, including River Valley Veterinary Hospital, of what had happened. But no one notified us. I got the news on the radio while driving to work weeks after the Attorney General had told them. They knew they had sent Kiwi to him. I am deeply disturbed by the disrespect Kiwi Rose suffered through this veterinary practice. I will not speculate on their involvement in or knowledge of the cremation fraud as it happened, but they were absolutely aware after the Attorney General contacted them that we had been victimized and they did not say a word to us. What if we had never heard it on the news? Why did we have to stumble upon it ourselves, when they knew they had led us there? It pains me so much to know Kiwi is in a landfill right now. I do not trust people who would act this way with my pet's care. I have found another vet for my other pets and I will not bring another animal back here. https://www.attorneygeneral.gov/taking-action/ag-sunday-charges-pittsburgh-based-funeral-home-owner-with-deceiving-6500-pet-owners-who-paid-for-burial-services-but-received-ashes-from-other-animals/

I appreciate them being the only vet open on Sunday, that can treat hospital level emergencies, within 20 miles from me. Avets was the first place to come up and the closest, and at 7:30 pm on a Friday, our options were limited so we made our way from Latrobe to Monroeville. My father, Nugget, and myself arrived at 8:30, Nugget saw triage fairly quickly but the wait to see the doctor was grueling as what seemed to be mostly non-emergent cases be handled as we were waiting to see what must be done about Nuggets partially severed tail. At or around 12:30 Nugget was ready to be seen. We were quoted at approximately $1,500 to amputate the part of his tail where bone was partially exposed and that blood work would be done first to make sure he was safe for anesthesia, which was explained as being part of that $1,500 figure, or that we could save money by jumping right to the surgery and that the procedure would take about 2 hours. When all was said and done, we left with Nugget at approximately 1:45, having paid over $2,000, and were sent home with a cone that is too small leaving Nugget's tail still within reach of his mouth, no liquid syringes for the medication but instead needle syringes with the needles removed as Avets was out of liquid ones. Our discharging nurse mentioned to be careful as "some of the ends were still a little bit sharp". And with discharge papers and instructions that conflicted on how much medication to administer to Nugget at the appropriate time. Once we caught the discrepancy at 6 AM before the first does was to be given, we called for clarity and were met with not much more than "whoopsie, our bad, here's the correct amount" and an offer to replace the cone if we came back out to again sit in the waiting room just to be given the right equipment that we should have been given the first time. I wanted to get Nugget treatment and to make sure of his health and safety and we played the hand we were dealt in terms of where we could go. I wanted to give the benefit of the doubt with regards to the order of treatment and time with the doctor but between the seemingly habitual way that issue comes up in reviews I've read since returning from Avets I struggle to grant that good faith and I find myself quite infuriated by the abysmal communication. The wrong cone, conflicting dosages on the prescriptions, and a price tag that was quite fluid and seemed to balloon due to poor word choice. I am deeply frustrated and angry with our experience here and God forbid we need emergency veterinary care in the future I will be doing more research now to find an alternative to Avets. Also multiple people were complaining about the fancy vending machine that kept charging but never dispensing the snacks or drinks. Weirdly, that feels like a good metaphor for the whole ordeal.
