Pet smart is a multi-million $ business. What I am about to iterate no paying customer should be forced to endure because of stupidity, lousy regulations, and uncalled for ignorance. On a weekly basis i buy baby crickets for my baby turtles, and have for some months now paying 10 cents per cricket. I almost always usually buy 30 babies each time. It should be noted that I spend thousands on large parrot, 3 dogs. cat, fish, turtle aquariums, foods and maintenance items as well over several past years. Even by Pet smart standard this bring-in business should NOT be taken lightly. I walked up the other day to get my customary (30) baby crickets. The kid who served me did NOT follow proper bagging procedure in counting the little fragile baby crickets. He proceeded to smash the bag FLAT on the counter where the little insects could get NO air, nor move - just so he could qua-say 'count' them. That move right THERE is enough to make one cringe. When i asked him to please not squish them he replied 'he'd been doing this for years' and laughed! It has been my observation in the past that improper trained sales ppl do the same procedure when counting baby crickets. This is NOT how staff is trained. I have seen more caring and experienced sales ppl allow some AIR into the bag first then count them so as to not kill, stun, or maim them. After this mishandling of my live merchandise, I then went to check out. The cashier rang me up announcing '$3.79. I was taken back because i usually only pay 3.25 for 30. I picked up the bag and saw where the kid had penned 35x10. I said i asked for 30 not 35 - she said they could take out 5. i said I didn't want to further traumatize the fragile tiny critters and said no, but couldn't they just write it off - she said "I can't do that, I'm not dishonest". I said that i wasn't dishonest either but that common sense had to kick in about now seeing as how the mistake was the store's and not mine - and rather than tie up the line, embarrass me, and make me feel like I was trying to rip them off for 5 tiny crickets costing 50 cents - with most intelligent people is just bizarre! To be treated like this in front of a store full of customers was embarrassing, discouraging, and quite a personal slap in the face in light of my many years of shopping and spending there! Both the cashier & Josiah, Ops. Mgr, were accusing ME of being a thief because i thought they should leave well enough alone and give me the other five! The only thing these morons could come up with is take 'back' their 5 that i never asked for to begin with! How do YOU spell Stupid?! Meanwhile im thinking: "Common sense: STORE error - STORE responsibility". They're rendition however of 'fixing' the problem was manhandling 5 tiny baby crickets to return them to the cage - not EVEN considering the inconvenience to the customer or welfare of the product, as well as facing the very strong possibility that more than just 5 critters might be dumped back in. I was in shock at the way the situation was being handled but exasperatingly paid the $3.79, as the mgr made her way up front saying was there anything i wanted to talk about - i said no there was nothing to be said and left. The reason i didn't say anything to the mgr is because i knew she would back up the cashier. To them it had been offered to put 5 back and i had said no. DUH! Of course all common sense is out the window as dictates that to risk ALREADY paid for, delicate and traumatized live merchandise and maybe the possibility of even MORE being ejected was to me simply stupid! I'm sure PS has 'write off' guidelines in place for damaged goods/animals taking place in the store on a day to day basis. So what is 50 cents going to do to a multi-million dollar company? Where does 'store policy' & common sense merge in this drama? Josiah Store Ops Mgr said "if we allowed all customers to get away with merchandise - we'd have to close the store" - this guy is clearly crazy! He said we've tried to make you happy, i said you haven't made me happy right from the start of this fiasco'. He continued to talk over me so i hung up on him. The whole thing is about non-existent C/S. In NO way can this be called effective customer interaction or 'pleasing the customer'~ This is small-time, mom&pop nickle & dimming and to hell with the customer. To continue the drama, I arrived home, (9 minutes away) from the store, & saw that 4 babies were dead on arrival - which if had been HANDLED properly in the first place wouldn't have happened! That's 40 cents lost between PS and my home! So who's losing money here - certainly NOT PS! I finally understand what Ive heard about other dissatisfied customers when they say "PS is in the pet provision business ($$$), NOT PEOPLE!" I will NEVER take my dog here again. They completely ignored my instructions. I asked for a Westie cut and received a Cocker Spaniel !! And it wasn't a good Cocker cut. He did have a slight Westie look to his face...which was totally ruined by the rest of the cut. I told them not to cut his tail and they "hacked" at it with a scissors (or a dull butter knife) until it looked almost shaved. He looked HORRIBLE. They said he wouldn't let them brush or clip his legs and feet. NOT. They brushed him in front of me before I even left him and he was fine. He has never had problems with this. They somehow managed to brush his "skirt" out totally. It was a 4-6 inch long poof. He was so embarrassed he wouldn't even lift his head or look at me. They hacked his ears straight across. He has been skittish and tender since the cut and winces if I reach out to pet him. I seriously suspect they hurt him in some way. They said they bathed him, but he still smelled when I picked him up, so I doubt they did. They also refused to cut his nails. He is 12 years old and I will never subject him to that again. They don't deserve ANY stars. read more
