DO NOT SUPPORT THIS BUSINESS!…read more It is a horrible establishment that purposely neglects the animals they're selling (i.e. hamsters, ferrets, rabbits, and guinea pigs). These poor animals are kept in tiny cages huddled in the middle of the store when the entirety of the store is HUGE! They could easily get bigger cages for them and spread them out, but it seems they care more about their inventory than the well-being of the animals they're selling. They're not given anything to play with, chew on, or to stimulate themselves. The animals aren't getting properly socialized with humans, and it seems these animals are used for decoration because of the way they are so obviously disregarded by the staff. Additionally, the staff/associates there were not friendly or welcoming whatsoever. When I entered the store, I was not greeted by the several staff standing behind the counter. As I walked throughout the store, I was not offered any assistance by the staff. If I had needed any sort of assistance, I probably would've had to go chasing down one of their associates since they were all huddled in the corner of the business giggling and laughing. Judging by the number of 1 star reviews this establishment has regarding the behavior of the staff in the past and my experience today, management doesn't seem to care enough to fix the clear problems they have with their incompetent staff, nor do they care enough to train them properly. Overall, I will NOT be supporting a business that doesn't care about the well-being of their animals, nor their customers.

My journey with Dr. Hicks began when I urgently reached out to Town n Country Veterinary after a…read moresudden decline in the health of my one-year-old rat, Baby Betty Blue. Betty was initially a feeder rat from a pet store. I adopted her to accompany a rat I was fostering, who had lost their best friend. Although the pet store didn't sell pet rats, they sold male feeder rats, and the staff members were happy that she somehow made her way into the feeder bucket because now she had a home. This marked the beginning of an unbreakable bond a person has with an animal. Betty is not just any rat; she is an extraordinary companion who brought immense joy and adventure into my life. Despite her small size, she exuded a vibrant spirit and was always excited to be with me. Her adventurous nature earned her the nickname "The Great Adventure Rat." Betty has a chronic upper respiratory virus, similar to feline infections, which caused her near-death experience and left lung scarring. She even has her own Minnie Mouse-sized nebulizer! This is Betty's story. On February 6th, while saying goodnight to Betty, I discovered a lump near her left ear. Since it was the weekend, I took Betty to urgent care. They were unable to provide a definitive diagnosis, but the lump, which had doubled in size overnight, was suspected to be malignant cancer due to its behavior. Determined to give Betty a fighting chance, I sought help from NC State Veterinary School and set an appointment for a few days later. First, a student was sent out first to inform me that if I see any red or bloody tears from Betty, it's just something that happens to rats in extremely stressful situations. I've seen severely stressed rats and haven't seen that before. They told me she had pretty severe scarring on her lungs, red stuff in her nose that rats develop from physical trauma, and also the ear bone on the side with the tumor was disintegrating. The vet said the mass wrapped up to her shoulder and down to her neck and was invading muscle and vascular portions of her small body. There was no way it could be 100% removed and would possibly grow back while she was recovering from surgery IF she even survived. Betty has been too terrified to come out of her enclosure since and only trusts me. I did not give up and sent an email to many small animal and exotics vets and had only receive a few responses as a week went by. I was losing hope and didn't want to waste our time left searching for vets constantly, so I stopped. On February 23rd, I was ecstatic to receive a response from Dr. Hicks, who expressed her willingness to help AND remove the tumor! Dr. Hicks, whom I met on February 24th, was incredibly kind and understanding. The mass on Betty's body having grown slightly, was beginning to cause her discomfort. We both agreed that Betty deserved one last shot at many more pain-free days, even if it meant risking her life with surgery. After an anxious three-hour wait, Dr. Hicks emerged with a smile, delivering the best news: she believed she had removed the entire mass, even around her carotid artery! Betty was alive, recovering well, and happy to see me. It was a moment of immense relief and joy. Just a week later, Betty is fully healed, back to adventure seeking and free from medication. Dr. Hicks' dedication and skill saved my beloved friend when no one else was willing to try. Her compassion and expertise is rare, and I cannot express enough gratitude for her help. Dr. Hicks is so friendly and bubbly, it feels like talking to a best friend who's going to save your pet. If you are in the Burlington, NC area, or are fine with traveling a bit to get the best care for your furry friend. I highly recommend Dr. Hicks at Town n Country Veterinary. She is truly exceptional. My gratitude for this sweet, young vet is without bounds. She could call me at midnight with a shady task and well, if do it, no questions asked!
