I am one of those weird cat…read moreladies who only buys grain free pet food, and the cat litter has to be clay, with extra clumping and odour control. Before I discovered this pet supplies store, I was buying from Amazon, which was often sold out of the only type of litter I liked. When I found this store, I saw they had a huge selection of everything, from dry and wet cat food, to raw treats to litter, toys...you name it. Prices are really competitive - beats or matches what I have found on Amazon but without having to wait for shipping. Their membership card is free and a portion of the store's proceeds go to charity of your choice. You can also find small pets here: small birds and parrots, gerbils, rabbits and chinchillas. They also have dog grooming. Those who say you can get a better deal at Tesco obviously aren't picky about the quality of products they are getting for their pets. I don't buy my cat any processed junky crap you find at Tesco and Sainsburys - I once had a cat develop IBS as a result of that sh*tty food. I only buy grain free organic now with as few ingredients as possible. I want my cat to live a long healthy life and stores like this make it possible. Keep your Tesco crap, I care too much about my kitty baby to feed him just anything. Well done, Pets at Home.

I started to use this Pet Store as it is local to my work…read more It has a good selection of stock and is reasonably priced. Unfortunately the store is badly hampered by frankly rude staff! On a couple of occasions now, I have visited the store during my lunch-break to buy pet food. But on taking the items to the till to pay. I have been served (if you can call it that!), by a young lady who makes you feel a 'nuisance' by your mere presence! And cannot muster-up a ' hello', 'please' or 'thank-you' during the payment process! Pets at Home, may not be as cheap or local. But at least you are greeted with some politeness and actually feel like the 'CUSTOMER'.

This company is one to avoid at all costs-you may as well set fire to ten pound notes and save…read moreyourself the hassle. I ordered a cat scratch tree which included a hammock and sleeping box etc. The plush material it's covered is cheap rubbish which falls apart like wet tissue paper leaving the hammock unusable and bits of fluff shedding everywhere off the rest of it. Had to remove it in case the cat swallowed bits and choked. I complained within a few days of receiving at and enclosing photos and asked for a refund which they refuse to give me. "Tracey" has emailed me saying all i'm entitled to is a replacement cover for the hammock which is pretty pointless as it's obviously in the same cheap material. She copies bits of consumer regulations in her emails and tries to twist them to make her point, saying the manufacurer is entitled to offer a repair and she's not responsible as the retailer even though I pointed out that the legislation actually means i'm entitled to a refund as I rejected the goods straight away as substandard. She also expects me to pay for return delivery (of a 9kg cat tree!!) when i've already paid for it to be delivered to me, so she can inspect it and report to the supplier. Never had such a disgraceful service from any shop online or otherwise, they've no idea about customer service and seem to think their Terms and Conditions negate Consumer Law-don't give them your money, there are plenty of other traders out there who won't mess you about, just wish i'd done a search for reviews before i ordered. She's twice said she's arranged a courier collection and then cancelled it, the last time saying i couldn't return the item as i don't have the original box. I've since complained to Consumer Direct who agreed with me that i was entitled to reject the goods under both the sale of goods act and distance selling regulations and that not having the original box made no difference at all to my rights. I sent her their advice and she now admits she was wrong about the original packaging being needed, but still won't give a refund until she's sent the material off to the supplier to inspect and report-meanwhile i'm still out of pocket when I was entitled to an immediate refund as I wasn't satisfied with the standard of the goods they delivered. It's annoying having to give them even the 1 Star the site makes you give as they don't even deserve that.

As far as small, independently owned pet shops go, this was is probably as good as it gets, but…read moreit's not without its downsides. It covers all the animals you might expect a middle-class Clapham resident to have in her home. Dogs, cats, birds, fish, hamsters, ferrets, rabbits, gerbils, rats and mice - Northcote Pet Stores has supplies for your little furry/scaled/feathered baby. Of interest to me particularly are the rat supplies. Northcote has two types of rat food, which is pretty surprising; I'm lucky to find one type of rat food in most pet stores. However, the store doesn't sell any litter appropriate for rats (it needs to be dustless, so woodchips simply will not do). There are at least seven different types of small-animal cages available for purchase; however, again, none of them are suitable for rats. If you have a more commonly kept pet, Northcote Pet Stores will have you covered for all your needs, and its prices are reasonable. For me, I still need to purchase things online and from other pet stores for my ratty babies, so Northcote simply can't be my go-to place for pet supplies. But it's still pretty damn good, and the staff is always friendly.

Anyhow they stock most things I need for my guinea pigs and Pygmy hedgehogs (food, bedding - not so great for cages etc but it is a really small shop) and have always offered to order in anything else i've wanted. When I had my staffy dog, they would order her favourite toys in for her! What I like most about this pet shop is that the full time staff really care about the animals in the shop - and will happily give as much advice as they can. I've seen them refuse to sell fish to people that don't have tanks set up etc and to me that is the mark of a good pet shop - caring about the animals more than the customers - as it should be!! I'd give you 5 stars, but I don't want you both to get big heads! hahahaha
