So, I come to Glen Lake in October thinking that I'll spend a couple of weeks, shut the cottage…read moredown, and not see it again until Feb/Mar, right? Ahhh...how easily the most simple plans go awry. In this case, I couldn't tear myself away from off-season Glen Lake and then got trapped here by the weather - it's December and I'm still here, sans appropriate outdoor gear. I did not pack for winter - I packed for fall and now I'm paying for it. We're talking plastic bags over my sneakers just to go outside due to the snow and the pipes freezing in the washing machine after I'd loaded 75% of our clothes in with soap. I'll go ahead and answer that question that is running through your mind even as I type; yes, I AM a complete idiot. What to do? Head into the Sportsman Shop in Glen Arbor. Although quite small, they have a great selection of high quality mens and womens coats, sweaters, shirts, long underwear, socks, foot gear, etc. at very reasonable prices. I've purchased a lovely, well made and much needed pair of boots for myself, some jammies & pants for the fella and we're set to go until the roads are safe to head back to Chicago. Good variety of Woolrich, Columbia, etc. in clothing and sporting gear for fishing and hunting and they even offer chartered fishing trips. Look for significant discounts after Thanksgiving - there are bargains to be had. Very friendly and helpful staff (I went in not knowing the fellas pants size and the incredibly nice saleslady helped me find a pair that fit him perfectly) and open year round to save dumb asses like myself from their ill conceived follies - I highly recommend this incredibly useful store.

I love finding businesses that bring life to something new from something old…read more I recently found this business locally while shopping at City People garden shop in Seattle, WA. I had been looking for a unique upscaled bag made from men's suits, and I fell in love when I saw Baabaazuzu's creation! Not only was it what I was looking for, it is crafted beautifully. Wonderful seems, lined in satin, enough pockets to store my treasures and lots of double takes at this gorgous piece of art! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

What a great selection of Michigan made, eco-friendly clothing. As a recent transplant to the…read moreTraverse City area I had fun exploring the Leelanau Peninsula while looking for Baabaazuzu. My smart phone wasn't being so smart--hence my GPS failed me, but thankfully I called Baabaazuzu and their staff was super friendly with giving me easy directions to their awesome storefront. Once I got to the official Baabaazuzu factory I was overwhelmed by how many beautiful products they create. I've purchased their famous mittens downstate for many gifts (and myself), but had no idea how expansive their green and as they say ; "upcycled" line truly is. After making my purchase, I was lucky to get a cool tour around the facility. I got to see their huge wool piles, beautiful button collection PLUS designers in action!!! :) I felt like I was on a grownup field trip. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone in the Traverse City area; only 30 minutes away from this interactive shopping experience.

They include a mix of antique pieces, which work perfectly with contemporary designs. I love the chandeliers they had throughout this most recent visit. As soo as you walk in, you can't help but fall in love, it mixes all items seamlessly, providing fun spaces, and one of a kind pieces. I've purchased a couple of jewelry items both visits, and while I would basically buy anything in the shop, it is rather pricey. But, if you are looking for pieces that truly are treasures that can be handed down, or unique items, as well as items that will last for years...then splurging isn't so bad!

*sigh* If you would have told me 5 years ago that I'd be giving Ella's anything less than 5 stars,…read moreI would have been shocked. Alas... I have been a faithful Ella's shopper for...oh man, a long, long time. 10 years at least. They used to be in this tiny, tiny place and while they did have some pricey, vintage and vintage-inspired clothes, they also had a substantial amount of real vintage, reasonably priced, *amazing* stuff. In particular, I recall that they always had once rack of adorable vintage blouses and none of them were over 30 bucks. I have an incredible lightweight black wool jacket from the 30s that is one of my all-time favorite pieces and I can think of at least three other items that I bought years ago and still adore. A few years ago or so they moved into a huge, beautiful space, still on Front Street. (Side note: I really wish they hadn't gotten rid of their old logo. It was beautiful and what they have now looks like something from Photoshop 101.) Like I said, the space is beautiful and they did a great job on the interior design, but....man, I can just not afford anything in there anymore. And I pretty much literally mean that. The bountiful rack of under-$30 blouses has been reduced to maybe 5 or so only "OK" items. Everything else is very expensive and a lot of it isn't vintage--just the same stuff you see in a lot of these high-end, plastic-y, tourist-trap "SoHo" boutiques that cater to women under a size 10. Don't get me wrong--a lot of the clothes are still beautiful and they do still have a formidable vintage section. Also, they sell Frye boots which I really, really love. I'm just disappointed to see the turn toward catering to tourists and townie yuppies with money. Something else--the staff is stylish and nice, but *way* too pushy. I hate when people try to sell me things when I'm just looking around. Also when they make me feel bad for not buying anything. I still have a place in my heart for Ella's and I still go in every time I visit T.C. I also do recommend checking it out--it is very beautiful and worth looking at! I just wish I could afford to do more than look.
