Volt Doctors - Shiny new and better than before

I think this is only the second online review I've ever left but Volt Doctors provided such amazing…read moreservice that I was compelled to write. A tree unexpectedly took down my power line on a Saturday and pulled the entire power meter and pole off my house. Since it was a weekend my usual electrician wasn't available and he recommended Volt Doctors. Their 24 hr dispatcher immediately answered and they had an electrician on site within two hours on a Saturday evening. Erik, helped get my generator running and hooked up, and an hour after that I had an estimate and repair plan in hand. On Sunday and Monday Summer was in frequent contact with updates and by Monday afternoon the repair was complete and good as new! The job came in under the projected time and under budget, so they reduced the cost to the real hours worked. I can't speak highly enough about Volt Doctors, THIS is how you run a business!

My daughter bought a home and it need some electrical work done to fix a few minor things and to hardwire some flood lights, patio lights and other projects. After a first attempt with a company that charged a service fee ($129) and sent 3 men that did absolutely NOTHING that we needed...I had the lucky fortune of finding Volt Doctors. The owner is a very nice and hard-working local man businessman that knows his stuff. They were able to work on many items on my list and I am excited they will be coming back to give the house a complete check for older sockets and some loose plugs. (Clearly I don't know the correct terms) - But I DO know what it feels like to have someone NOT take advantage of me. THANK YOU Volt Doctors for running an honest business with reasonable pricing and good quality work!

I wish there were more stars for this…read more Storytime: When Duke Energy upgraded our electric meter, they broke the base, and we experienced worsening brownouts and then blackouts for a few days. When we called Duke Energy to come out, they found the meter was sparking (AKA arc'ing), so they shut off part of our power (one "phase"), so half our lights were out and we could not run appliances, although we had heat and could run a cord to a working outlet to our 'fridge. BUT we had to repair the base (The box your meter sits on either outside or inside your house) at our cost! (We were able to try and submit a claim, which actually was rejected due to a Duke subcontractor did the work ... also,we found out the base might have been failing for a long time before the meter replacement.) First, I tried a company in Durham, because they could come out that night. They came out, and gave a $1,200 estimate to: get a permit, parts, replace the meter base. Fine. But, the person the Durham firm sent was scary in many ways ... I thought he might either electrocute himself or damage my house. Clearly he had no idea what he was doing, from watching and talking with him. My "BS detector" was going crazy. I wanted someone else, and told the firm to hold off while I got a second opinion. Meanwhile, a day wasted with no power in many rooms in the house. I called all the local electricians and everyone was too busy for weeks! Then I tried Bonneville. I emailed them at night and got a call in two hours to schedule! I spoke with Brad and he clearly understood the situation and made me much more confident than the other firm. At Brad's suggestion, I left a key for him to come inside the house so no one had to miss work. At about 10:30 that morning, he called me to tell me he was able to REPAIR the broken meter base, not replace it. He patiently explained EVERYTHING about what happened and why ... literally spent 15 minutes explaining and talking about it. Such an easy experience! The best part? We were only charged $233 for the repair parts and labor, vs. the $1,200 to replace the meter base. Advice: Bring your A game to Bonneville. Be ready to clearly explain your problem in an intelligent way, be a good listener, and you will be rewarded by the best service experience possible. HIGHLY recommended. Richard Stern, Carrboro NC.

I hired them to link a generator to my house and to fix two ceiling fans. They provided me with an…read moreestimate - which I paid $196.73 for. This charge was not applied to my bill. I then decided it would be best to replace the fan rather than fix them. The first time they came out, they removed the fans but couldn't install the new fans as the down pipe (I provided) was the wrong size. Nothing was done for the generator as the needed part was the wrong size (they provided). The second time, they installed the fans, but again did nothing for the generator as the replacement part also didn't fit. I was then informed they couldn't do the generator job as described in the estimate and the new estimate was now $300 more than quoted. Essentially it took 3 trips out here for them to figure out what was actually needed to install the generator. The estimate, I paid for, was useless. I was then billed $1,587 for the fan installation. This included a second trip fee as they had to come back because the fan down pipe I provided was incorrect. I reminded them they had to return anyway as their part was wrong, but they keep telling me I caused the return trip. They finally split the cost with me. I reviewed the invoice carefully and found numerous questionable charges and errors - 75 minutes of supervisor reviewing project with staff @$109/hr, billing assistant time at electrician rate, charging for lunch time, assembling a defective ladder. The final bill to install to ceiling fans in ceilings was $1,321, $266 more than their original invoice. Next time I will rent scaffolding and do it myself.

This involved rerunning some of the current can lighting to account for removing two previous lights. I had gotten a few quotes from various companies, a few in-person estimates from people who just didn't seem to know what they were talking about as well. However, Dayton, not only was able to quote based on my photos, his in-person quote came in exactly the same and was one of the most reasonable ones we got. He is extremely knowledgeable, was happy to walk me through everything he was doing, made sure to check and double check exactly where I wanted all the new lights, and kept me updated throughout the few hours he was here. After everything was done, the space was clean and all the lights exactly where I wanted them. He went out of his way to deal with funky wiring without missing a beat, and even clearly labeled all the wiring so we were able to install the remainder of the lights in the new holes (we had ceiling work done ater the fact so we waited to install a few ourselves) with NO confusion at all. All in all, i definitely recommend Dayton of Ambidex for your electrical needs. We have a few other projects down the pipeline and some wonky (original builder grade) wiring issues elsewhere, and we'll definitely not hesitate to contact Dayton for all future work!

I asked Ahmed and team to do a pretty decently sized job. It seems like a lot of the reviews on…read morehere are for small quick-fixes and maybe they're great at that kind of thing. I needed my whole house to be re-wired. Ahmed came in and thoroughly looked over the house before giving me an estimate. He and Jose really seemed to know what they were talking about and their price was quite a bit better than the next competitor. They gave me a price estimate and then said that the job would be done in three to five days (this time-frame was given to me in writing). A MONTH later they still hadn't finished the work. Many of the reviews here mention how awesome Ahmed and Jose are. I only saw Ahmed in my house once during the project. He farmed much of the work out to sub-contractors who, while polite, didn't really seem to have a handle on what they were doing. One kept telling me about all of the times he had electrocuted himself (he proceeded to electrocute himself in my living room). They cut a hole in an exterior wall straight into my living room while trying to install a floodlight and just left the hole. Most of the outlet holes they cut were WAY too big for the outlets and left just gaping holes all over my house. They tore up the ceiling in my bathroom, leaving it impossible to repair. They cut two holes in my bedroom ceiling to install one smoke detector. Aside from the fact that this project took literally 10 times longer than estimated, it was done so poorly I just don't understand where all of the positive reviews have come from. Here's the kicker. Ahmed came into my house after his crew had been working for a month. I walked him through the house showing him all of the incorrectly installed outlets, the holes in the walls, the destroyed ceiling in my bathroom, etc etc etc. He said "I think we did pretty good here, this project came along well." I was flabbergasted. Was this actually the level of success he was going for? He then proceeded to tell me that his team had to go above and beyond because I hadn't asked them to install a plug for a sump-pump under my house. He told me he wanted to charge me for this extra work. This was news to me as I had paid the crawlspace company to do that work. I called the crawlspace company and they assured me that they had indeed done that install themselves. When I confronted Ahmed about it, he backed down. He wasn't here when the install happened anyways so how would he know? He also told me that I should be grateful because they paid for the smoke detectors they installed. They didn't ask me about installing smoke detectors, they didn't tell me this should have been an extra charge or ask me how I'd like to pay for it. Instead they installed them and then told me later that I should have paid for them. ????? Ahmed also asked me for more money ahead of time during the project. The contract clearly stated that I was to pay X amount up front and the remainder when the project passed the inspection. He told me that he had to pay his guys and needed a middle payment. I was NOT going to go ahead and just hand him cash early. This was three weeks past the date he said he was going to be done by. He told me to check the contract. I did. He was wrong. With this motivator, he actually got to the point of getting the inspection done. They of course failed the inspection the first time. This isn't abnormal but the frustrating part was the amount of things they just tried to hide from the inspector. For a complete re-wire they're supposed to remove all old wiring from the house. This has not been done to this day. They got the old wiring that they thought the inspector would be able to see and just left the rest. I paid them to get it to pass inspection and they did. I guess I should have been more specific. He claimed that the project ended up being more difficult because they had to go through my attic with the wiring instead of through my crawlspace. We had completely discussed this challenge ahead of time however. I showed him the attic and he actually climbed up there before even giving me the estimate. He knew the scope of the project from the start, using that as an excuse was not going to work. It's been a couple of weeks since they left and I'm still cleaning up after them. Last week I tried one of the outdoor outlets they installed and when I was pulling the plug back out of the outlet, it just came completely out of the wall. It wasn't attached at all. Today I found a plug behind a bookshelf that wasn't attached to the plug box. Plugs aren't flush to the walls. I've reinstalled 6 of the plugs they've done already. I'm sure if I pestered Ahmed he would eventually send someone over to re-do some of these jobs but I'm well past this point. Every time they came in to my house they created as many problems as they solved. It's easier at this point to just fix things myself. Bottom line: Jose is great, otherwise stay away from Wired Up.
