Pete's was recommended by a good friend, who had been taking her vehicle there for years. Recommendations to me are very importation especially coming from someone who I've known and respected for years. Also I know this person only gives referrals, when we'll deserved. Prior to going to Pete's, I had a bad experience with a local business, mechanic and tire shop in the area (North Ave & Harlem). Went for an oil change, tire rotation and once over before putting my vehicle on the road in late June. Was told my radiator had a leak and it would be expensive to repair. Weeks prior, my husband vehicle had been leaking fluids on the garage floor, so i purchased two silver large cookie sheets from a auto mechanic store, to catch liquid and keep from staining the floor, put one under each vehicle. His vehicle did continue to leak and stain the pan, but my mine was clean nothing, and still looking new after several weeks. I explained this to the very polite and professional desk personnel. He insisted there was a leak. I'm panicking because I was unsure if we should put the vehicle on the road. But we did, stopping along the way to check the radiator fluids several times, never did the fluids go low even to today, That was in late June and here we are in mid October. When I took the vehicle to Pete's for brakes had him check the radiator for any leaks or abnormalities. Me Pete stated, there was no leaks and he looked fine, which saved me around 1700.00. Lots of good reviews led me to try out Pete's Auto, and more than one lauded Pete's "communication." Not my experience by a long shot. I dropped off my 2012 Murano at 8am Thursday and delineated what the problems were: 1. Warped front rotors needed to be replaced -- may as well replace the pads as well; 2. Right rear passenger door won't open; 3. Inspect suspension including contact arms, tie rods, everything, and offer an estimate to fix it -- basically a 2nd opinion as another mechanic had given it the once-over a few months ago and said it would be $2-3000. That's what I told the woman at the desk: I knew the suspension was practically shot (after 90K miles on Chicago streets); fix 1 and 2 and give me an estimate. I have no idea what she actually told Pete or wrote down. But no one called me all day Thursday to let me know what's going on, so I called late afternoon and was told Pete wasn't available and to leave a number. No one called back Thursday. Friday I called late morning and Pete was "on the other line" and I left my number again. No one called. In the afternoon I spoke briefly with Pete, who seemed unaware of the status of my Murano, and asked me to hold; after a few minutes the same woman came on the line and said Pete wasn't available. I told them I needed to pick up my car, and they asked when I needed it. I was renting a car and had to return it and would pick up my car before 6. They seemed surprised I would need my car back after 2 days in the shop. At 5:30 I called to say I was on my way and could they be there at 6:15; at that point Pete told me the suspension was "in bad shape" -- which was why I brought it in in the first place. Got there before 6:20, Pete appeared and again told me the suspension needed alot of work; He said it would probably be 3 grand or more. No mention of the brake rotors or the passenger door. In other words, after 2 full days in the shop, repeated phone calls to find out what's going on, after $150 for a car rental, Pete's did ZERO work on my car. Not even a real estimate for any of it. The only reason I don't give it an equivalent zero stars, or one star, is that he didn't try to charge me anything. Of course, he didn't give me an invoice either, since he HAD DONE NOTHING ON MY CAR FOR 2 DAYS. Let me communicate this: Not going back to Pete's Auto. read more

Pete seriously hooked my honk of junk up. My car was in need of a tune up BAD. Pulled up for the night drop and Pete immediately identified what was going on. Water pump. Now that's skill folks. I was told my car would be ready next week. Spoiler alert, was ready 24 hours later. Brake, water pump, a few other things and viola! Excellent riding car. He called with the suggested repairs, quoted me a fair price and got the job done. I appreciate Pete and am truly thankful for his service. My Toyota dealer was going to charge me $2000 to replace the exhaust system in my car even though the problem could be solved with a tiny welding job (which they don't do), so I called Pete. Before I even told him, he knew I drove a 2003 Corolla (apparently this is a common problem for this ol' car) and he said that he could solve it for around $130. Done and done. I dropped off my car and Dorothy (Pete's right hand gal) was just so kind...I knew my car was in good hands with her and Pete. A few hours later, we picked up the car--good as new. They are a BLESSING. Two weeks ago, my car broke down on Roosevelt and 1st ave. The radiator just died and blew up. I looked on Yelp for help and found Pete's. Called and Dorothy had me towed and in a rental car in an hour!! Hello. That is pure AWESOME SAUCE. Dorothy rocks. So Pete worked on my car, got that baby purring and running. On Feb 26, I took my car in again for a check up because I'm doing a road trip. Pete looked it over thoroughly and let me know what work had to be done. Sure it was a lot, but he gave such excellent service before, I didn't care. I unknowingly bought a lemon, and Pete never lectured me or talked to me as if I was dumb for dong so. He just got to work and got my car back to me in a day. When the work was done, he took time out to show what he did, explained to me why and educated me. Did a full inspection on my car for $100, gave me a list of recommended repairs, said my exhaust system looked fine. After having TWO different shops recently tell me there was a hole/ leak in the resonator, exhaust system in general looked rusty and catalytic converter may need to be soon replaced I inquired about it. Pete's Auto said when I brought it back for the next scheduled repair they would double check it. Upon second inspection they said they "missed" seeing the issues with the exhaust system the first time , and showed me pictures of the affected areas (the same problems noted previously by 2 other shops) . It was evident that they did not do a thorough inspection to begin with (you would think a shop would have a simple checklist they go through when performing an inspection). On top of this, they told me that the car seemed to be riding "stiff" and I would need new front struts for over $700.00, even though I just had them done 2 years ago. They didn't base this recommendation off of any evidence of broken or malfunctioning parts, only that "it rode rough". I couldn't see any evidence myself that would justify new struts. Suspicious, I took it to a different shop in Chicago to have the suspension thoroughly inspected. They literally joked that while they were disappointed they couldn't sell me anything there was absolutely nothing wrong with the struts; its an older smaller car and it simply rides that way, and if I wanted a smoother ride I would have to buy a bigger newer car (this is not an endorsement of Raul's Auto Service on Diversey ave as I have not paid to have any repair work done there yet). I also discovered that my tires had been over inflated this whole time , and after buying a tire pressure gauge and setting the correct air pressure on all 4 tires the ride definitely showed an improvement. To add to all this, the repairs I did have done at Pete's seemed pricey compared to previous shops. read more

Worst experience I've ever had!!! I went to this shop to change front brakes on my Lexus, when I asked about the price quote at the reception I was told they need a time to do an estimate and will call me back to let let me know what the price is. After 30 min Pete called me with price $450. I said I don't want to do it for this money, his response was:"Are u kidding me, we already ordered parts". And then they charged me $50 just for the estimate. I was shocked how rude Pete was over the phone. After some research I found another local shop for half of that price with much better customer service. Don't go there if you respect yourself!!! read more

I called to ask if they offered any mobile mechanic services were a mechanic can come to your house and work on a car-the woman who answered the phone had extremely poor customer service and had no idea what I meant by a mobile mechanic and when I tried to elaborate, she had a nasty attitude and hung up. I brought my car in for an oil change today and I brought with me my own air and cabin filters to be swapped out. I always do this because it's cheaper in the end. I also asked Pete to check my brakes to see how they were looking. I got the bill and it was $126!!!! Are you f-ing kidding me?? He said my brakes were fine but labor to check them out was $47.( a bit of a stretch here) The part that annoys me the most was my oil change was over $57 and I did not even get the synthetic oil and I brought my own filters! He charged $47 labor for putting my filters in....is that a joke? That's part of the oil change process and the fact I supplied my own filters there is no reason my oil change should have costed over $50! I thought I had an honest mechanic in my neighborhood but I was wrong. read more

I have been going to Pete's ever since my car came off warranty. He is excellent. The dealer had given me a quote of $1,200 to have some brake work done on my car. I brought it to Pete's and he quoted me a price that was half of the dealer's cost. I am now hooked. Pete is honest, reasonably priced, very responsive and it's always a friendly place. I partially blame myself for my expectations of honesty. My number one reason for choosing this location for repairs were the reviews quoting the honesty. I took my car to this location for 2+ years. My last visit, I inquired about whether or not my car was worth the repairs that needed to be put into it. I was told that my car could be sold for over $2K. Imagine my displeasure when I found out the bill was $1.6K (after repairs of course). 2 weeks later, my car wouldn't run. After the multiple tows, I found out that there is an issue with water getting into my car and killing fuse box. The discovery costed me a new battery ($200) and I'm not willing to pay the $750 for fuse box replacement or the $$$$+ for the discovery of the water leak and fixing that. Now I'm looking to donate or junk my car that I had to purchase a new battery for. The best offer I've heard is $400, which is less than the labor of my last Pete's Auto visit. The car that I could have screwed someone and sold for $2K is now going to be sold for a negative dollar amount, but luckily I entrusted my mechanic and paid $1,600 to get it fixed in the first place. You can roll the dice and hope for better luck, but I'm going to invest in a bike so that I don't have to borrow against my retirement savings to maintain a car anymore. I had to add a star for the service. Dorothy is a nice person and provides great service. I also believe that Pete is a good person, but not many people will provide you with an honest answer when it conflicts with business. read more

Pete's is as good as it gets in auto repair. Aside from being an insanely nice guy, Pete is about as honest as they come--a rare bird in the auto repair biz. Been going there for years for everything from oil changes (he fixed what the goons at the WalMart oil & lube place screwed up) to repairing my really smooth move of accidentally putting diesel in my gas tank. (Yeah--this is why one shouldn't yak on the phone while pumping gas.) He doesn't do unnecessary work just to make a buck, or upsell you in any way. These guys have un-screwed many a challenging mess with both of my cars. Sometimes I think i drive them all crazy (or at least they believe I'm nuts). But they do it right and they 'splain to you what they fixed or why they suggest repairing something. They don't work for free, but in comparison to other local shops, they're pretty tolerable. Dorothy is a sweetheart and you just wonder what the world would be like w/out her after a few interactions. If I don't make them mental first, I will keep taking my stuff to them for the biggest or the tiniest issues. They are consistently stacked up w/ work, so be a pal and let them know if you need it ASAP or can wait. --Some other peeps need their rides today & you should expect to make a future appointment, so PLAN if you're just doing an oil change. ;) read more

When a business acts as if they are doing you a favor taking your hard earned money, it's time to look elsewhere. Won't return your calls, I tried repeatedly, even leaving a message in person. Dorothy, the receptionist who worked there in the past when I took my car for service, used to be sweet, friendly and helpful, everything the current receptionist is not. Last time I called to leave a message the new person was snippy and acted put-upon and abruptly ended the call by saying, "Pete will return your call at his leisure, sometime." - never happened.
