My husband had perforated bowels and 2 enterocutaneous fistulas that was making our lives and his health a literal medical nightmare. I honestly didn't know if he was going to make it. I needed an emergency colectomy and glad I had Dr.Wang to perform the surgery. Several of the hospital staff staff well as non hospital staff professionals gave him the highest marks. He is very straightforward in his diagnosis and is clearly a very good surgeon. He is also quite upbeat and has energy I respect. I recovered from the surgery quickly and well. Office experience: Be prepared for a wait. He has far fewer office hours than surgery hours, to be expected with an emergency multi specialty surgeon. Dr. Wang performed by colostomy re-section surgery. The original colostomy, done by another surgeon, was a severe emergency with huge perforations of the bowel, peritonitis and other problems, so it was an ugly re-construction situation to deal with later when Dr. Wang took on the re-section. He spent a lot of time trying to improve my internal situation and remove excessive amounts of scarring. He did a great job and I was on my way home in 5 days. I had a diverticular fistula and sigmoid resection in November. Dr. Wang was highly recommended to me by a coworker, who had a similar experience and had gone to Dr. Wang for himself and his children. Clearly, that last part goes a long way. My procedure was complicated with a pelvic kidney added in. Dr. Wang took extra precaution and time to be as minimally invasive as possible. He was patient, cautious and honest throughout. I don't like pain medication and he's not heavy handed with it so that worked perfectly for what I did and didn't really need. I'm just about 8 weeks out and happy to say I'm beyond healed- I feel better than I ever have. I'm so grateful to Dr. Wang, the staff at Dr. Wang's office (notably Sara), and the amazing team at Newport Hoag for exceeding my expectations from care to recovery and follow up. read more

I met Dr. Wang roughly 6 months ago. I had two hernias one the size of a softball, the other size of a golf ball, neither really bothered me. At 65 I thought I should take care of these before they got any worse or caused me any issues. Dr. Wang was very clear and what to expect. Today I had my three month check up during the surgery. He found two others so there was a total of four hernias he was able to repair with mesh. I'm completely healed no discomfort and release to do my normal activities which include a beach cruiser ride daily of about 16 to 20 miles, weight training and stretching daily. Dr. Wang took out my gallbladder in November 2022 and, without hesitation, I would highly recommend him. The ER staff at Newport Beach Hoag Hospital had very good feedback about Dr. Wang prior to my surgery, and....they were right. Turns out, I was blessed with an unusually large gallbladder with an unusually large gallstone (almost 6 cm). I am glad Dr. Wang, with his many years of experience as a surgeon, ended up doing my surgery. pre-op interactions were very good. He answered all my questions. He followed up post op and answered some more questions and explained what I should expect from the coming days/weeks. DO NOT USE THIS PETER WANG!! Insensitive, egotistical, non-caring. Any time someone has to tell how "great" he is, that is a huge warning sign to investigate thoroughly. He performed an unnecessary hiatal hernia surgery to enhance his resume. Before realizing that the hiatal hernia surgery was not necessary, he was to perform an umbilical hernia surgery in the near future. The umbilical surgery was to be done at the same time that a hysterectomy was to be performed. But Wang was a no-show and I never saw or spoke to him ever again. He never made contact with me nor had the courtesy to explain his actions or communicate in any form. So I went to a different doctor for my umbilical hernia. After the X-ray for the umbilical hernia, he saw the results of the hiatal surgery. He commented that the hole in the diaphragm which the esophagus passes through on the way to the stomach was not that large and he decided not to comment further. Needless to say our next appointment will be with a malpractice attorney to see if we have a case. A hiatal hernia surgery is when the stomach is tied into a knot so the stomach will not protrude past the diaphragm. The results of that protrusion is heart burn, reflux, and burning sensation in the esophagus. There are less drastic measurers than a hiatal hernia surgery. This surgery was an excellent candidate for the ring insertion. Which is a ring that is placed around the esophagus just above the stomach and just below the diaphragm. This prevents the stomach from protruding through the hole in the diaphragm. The result of the hiatal hernia surgery is you CAN NOT vomit. You CAN NOT belch. You won't have heart burn or reflux, but what a price to pay. All your gas has only one exit and that is through the intestines and out your rear! Having constant UNCONTROLABLE gas is humiliating, Especially when the initial problem could have been solved with the "ring" type operation. The ring type surgery still allows one to vomit, belch and to be able to pass gas more naturally. I had the hysterectomy, but still have the cancer and not being able to vomit is extremely painful. DO NOT USE PETER WANG!! read more

I was admitted to the hospital with a small bowel obstruction, one we thought/hoped wouldn't need an operation. After a week of the waiting game. it was time to operate and who better than Dr. Wang?! From the beginning, he was always very honest with me that surgery was a possibility. I have a history of GI issues/surgeries so it was a very last resort, but was needed. There were never any surprises throughout my stay, he was always honest...which at times hit me like a ton of bricks, but its better to have all the facts. He's knowledgable & I wouldn't have wanted anyone else to operate on me. After some time you will get to see the fun side to him & he will always ask if you have any questions for him before he leaves the room! I had a very positive experience with Dr. Wang. I needed a hernia surgery and it was scheduled for a Monday morning. Dr. Wang called me Friday afternoon and told me that he had a family emergency. He gave me the option of postponing the surgery to another date, or he would come in on Saturday and take care of me. He explained to me that I would be on a standby list, because there are no scheduled surgeries on Sat. I told him I was more than willing to come in on Saturday. Saturday morning I was called by Hoag staff to come in asap. 2 hours later I was in surgery with Dr. Wang. The surgery was outstanding and so was recovery. I was admitted to Hoag Irvine in May 2024. I was under the care of Dr. Peter Wang. After a week of antibiotics, it was decided that I needed to have colon resection surgery. I absolutely love Dr. Wang. He is straight forward, takes his time explaining things to you in a way that you will understand, and he doesn't sugar coat things. I felt very safe, calm and comfortable being in his care. He made sure I knew exactly what was going to happen during surgery, and exactly what was expected of me after surgery. I felt that he was very caring, but also very firm with what I needed to do to heal so that I would not develop clots and die. The level of care that I received from every single person during my two week stay was top notch and I couldn't have asked for anything better. Dr Peter Wang was the surgeon on call at Hoag Medical Center in Newport Beach when I had an emergency cholecystectomy on the first night of 2025. I had no history of gallbladder problems until the day before, when I suddenly had a bought of pain as I was exercising to begin my New Year's exercise resolutions. As I was doing abdominal exercises I suddenly experienced the worst pain of my life. My neighbors drove me to the ER. I'll be forever grateful to the physicians and nurses on call that night. They called Dr Wang to perform emergency surgery. At that point I had already developed sepsis. Dr Wang and his associate operated to remove my infected gallbladder. Since then he has continued to check on me weekly and to bring in consultants to follow me with antibiotics. Over the next 6 days in the hospital I was told by many of the medical staff that I was fortunate to have had Dr Wang on emergency duty that night. read more

This Dr. saved my life plain and simple! I have cancer and it metastasized in my small intestine. After going to ER and being admitted with belly pain that never stopped and nausea and getting sick that would not quit and scans and consults later Dr. Wang would be taking out part of my small intestine and putting in an ileostomy bag. Well as a patient when you hear that you freak out, which i did. He assured me that it in my case it could be reversible when i/my oncologist are ready, so after 2 weeks in hospital i was home with a bag and back in chemo a couple weeks later. His office staff is really nice and caring and good communication. His bedside manners are awesome i think, he is funny, and he jokes around but when it's time to talk about you and your procedures he is very very straight forward. He takes time with you, i never felt rushed when at an appointment or when he came to see me at hospital bed, my wife thinks he is funny and an awesome surgeon as well. Well after 8 long months of having my bag i got it reversed last week ! So far healing is going good...slow moving cause of my cancer and chemo but i have had an X-ray and a ct scan and it shows everything is nice and in tact with no leaks ! My family and i are very blessed that Dr. Peter Wang was assigned to my case !! I cannot wait to see him in a couple weeks and show him how good i am doing !! read more

I highly recommend Dr. Wang for the most important reason--surgically he is the MASTER! I have worked in medicine for 35 years in different capacities: I have seen surgeons in the operating room, cared for their patients post-surgery and have audited their records for quality standards, so I consider myself a justified critic to post a review. This doctor is beyond competent, he is a brilliant surgeon and has had more experience than most other surgeons in not only our area, but the nation. He operates at the finest facilities with the best equipment available in medicine today. These are the attributes that matter most when you are a patient about to be operated on. I read reviews patients write about their doctors and usually they are addressing how nice the person was, how long they waited in the lobby, if there was a billing issue. Yes, these are important if you are planning to spend a lot of time connected to the office, but really, those are not why we go to a doctor, particularly, a specialist. We go to receive specific care. Nine months ago, I found myself ill with a colon condition that was not going to get better. My gastroenterologist referred me to Dr. Wang to have a left hemisphere colectomy. This is not a diagnosis/prognosis to be flippant about your surgeon of choice. I knew his reputation at Hoag Hospital to be the one the nurses and other physicians would personally choose for themselves and family members, so I knew this was where I belonged. Dr. Wang was prudent in obtaining all necessary diagnostic testing prior to scheduling my surgery so as to be best prepared for the best outcome. Although I was a difficult case, I was able to be a candidate for robotic assisted laparoscopic approach to my surgery, only because of Dr. Wang's specific skill set. Most other surgeons would have opened me up either mid-line or full zipper incision. This meant I only have 5 tiny incision scars, only a 3 day hospital stay, minimal blood loss, no leaks, no ileostomy bag, no complications, and I returned to work part-time after only 2 weeks. To address the niceties, I love Dr. Wang and his staff. I feel very cared for. You have to realize, this is a busy surgical office. The doctor schedules cases in advance, and other patient's cases worsen and have to be moved up. The doctor also is on-call at the hospital and emergent cases happen that are not scheduled. So, the nature of a surgical practice is that rescheduling and wait times do happen. Don't be a hater, it is what it is. But, rest assured that when it's your time to be the focus patient, you have the BEST surgeon at your bed side. read more
