Dr. Wang performed a robotic resection of my colon after I had experienced multiple "micro" perforations in a period of 60 days due to recurrent diverticulitis flare ups. The surgery was delayed while I was on IV antibiotics to reduce the infection from the abscesses that had formed. I was 77 years old at the time and several doctors said that the surgery would be difficult given the repeated perforations and level of infection. Initially, Dr. Wang wanted to wait and said that it would be better to let the infection subside completely. Unfortunately, the diverticulitis and perforations kept returning and he moved the surgery up to avoid further complications.
He performed the surgery robotically and the only complication was from the general anesthesia. I recovered from the surgery part very quickly with only a few small scars from the robotic procedure. The general anesthesia however raised hell with my system. One of the problems was that I had trouble urinating after the surgery. During a follow-up visit, Dr. Wang asked me who my urologist was. I told him that I didn't have one. He said, "At you age, you should have a urologist to check on your prostate if nothing else. The next day, a urologist showed up in my hospital room and told me he would take me on as a new patient. While I have had little experience with surgeons, I know that they generally do not spend time looking for specialists for you after surgery unless it is a critical issue that needs immediate attentions as a result of the surgery. I was really impressed that Dr. Wang had taken the time to get a urologist for me simply because it would be in my best interest. In short, the level of his concern for my general well being really impressed me - it was a good feeling. While I have not had a lot of experience with surgeons, at 77 I have a good deal of experience with doctors in general and I would say it is rare that a doctor has such a level of concern for a patient's general wellbeing. My primary doctor whom I have been with for over twenty years and like told me to come see him when I got out of the hospital and he would do a referral to urology for me. I really didn't need him to do that because I had a urologist and all of the referral process and new patient process, including insurance clearance, was done before I even left the hospital after surgery. So, in addition to a perfect robotic re-sectioning of my colon and very quick recovery under less than ideal circumstances given the infection and ongoing perforations, Dr. Wang had the concern and took the time to express his concern that I should have a urologist at my age. The following day, I had a urologist who took me on as a patient the next day in the hospital. If it hadn't happened to me, I wouldn't believe it. Dr. Wang has an easy way with patients and a good sense of humor in addition to his unusual level of concern for his patients. I'm really glad that I found him when I needed surgery. If you are looking for a surgeon, you just couldn't do better than Peter Wang - that's my opinion anyway. read more
