Store was clean and well organized. However, I found that it had an interesting smell to it not the kind of smell that you would expect from a pet store but definitely a smell. Highly disappointed in this service. Booked an appointment for a dog BATH just to be declined because there was ONE knot behind his ear and they claimed it was "cutting off his circulation AND we need to go to the vet immediately to cut it off." I could tell they did not want to bathe our dog because it was the last appointment of the day and he is a "big" dog. The lady behind the grooming desk was complaining about her day to me, about how long it was and how she needs more caffeine. They both came out of the room and in front of all the customers embarrassed us and made us feel like bad dog owners because of one knot. Waste of time and have lost our service forever. read more

If I could a zero I would. When I worked there this place was amazing and awesome to go to everyday. Now it's awful. Also, when a co-worker used to be there in fish the glass was always cleaned and so was everything in these tanks. But when I went to grab some cat litter we showed my son around and showed him the fish. I was absolutely disgusted at what I saw! But don't worry! I have pictures! And I even have a picture with fish actually in these disgusting tanks! Like I stated before when I worked there and the co-worker also worked there these tanks where never this nasty. The service that i received was quick and to the point. I was satisfied with vetco. It was when I got to the register where I felt extremely uncomfortable and judged. I never want to go back into that place ever because of the way I was judged for using a prong collar on my dog. My dog is a reactive huskie/german shepherd mix from a richmond animal shelter (most dogs from the Richmond area are reactive and have a lot of anxiety from being in the shelter). The person at the register asked me why I use a prong on him and I explained why and all I felt after that was pure judgement. You should never judge anyone's situation without knowing the dog and/or owner. The prong collar works for my dog in environments where he's going to possibly be in contact with other dogs and that's it. I shouldn't even have to explain to someone. Please train your employees about respect and being a judge free work place. You may not care about losing one customer but you should care about how your employees act towards your customers who contribute to your business. It's not good hospitality at all. I also see a previous review of another customer getting judged by purchasing a prong collar. You really need to educate your employees on respect towards others. Also educate your employees on why certain dogs actually benefit from a prong collar. Not every dog is born a great listener. Not every dog is born happy and grown in a stable environment. Extremely unhappy with my experience at the register and feeling sympathy for anyone else who gets judged on what your business sells. read more

Great Store.... I have been in the store on several occasions when I am in the area. However, it is nice and clean. I am usually wanting to buy the Blue Buffalo Dog food. I wish they carried a larger selection of the food because sometimes I have to run to PetSmart to buy what I need. They only carry about 20% of the Blue line. The people who work in there are extremely nice and helpful as well.... They do carry Birds which PetSmart does not carry... so for those who have Birds for Pets... you will find more of what you need there.... read more

This is the sorriest pet store I have ever been in. Mismanaged and it shows. None of the employees look like they work there, they all have very casual lax clothing on like they came off the street and started that day. And there is no one that WANTS to help you. Even when asked a question it seems like they don't want to be bothered. The people grooming the dogs weren't even dressed appropriately. And I promise I'm not a Karen, I am simply someone who wants this to be seen by the right person. The customer comes first for your internal customers, management needs to maintain their focus on their internal customers so the external customers are satisfied. Today, me and 3 other customers were waiting in line for someone to check us out. No one was there, someone working in the grooming section stepped out and grabbed someone for us (1st problem). The when I get to check out I am purchasing a choking collar for a key set due to these being very durable, not even for my dog. The guy at the counter asked me why I would do this to an animal. First, don't ask your customer and put your customer in a awkward position. Whatever someone is buying you should simply scan the item put it in the bag and call it a day. Also, you don't know what someone's personal situation is and he is honestly very lucky I wasn't in the mood to rebuttal since I had to rush to take my dog to the emergency vet. I am very upset and worried for your company and the thousands of other customers you're going to serve with this type of employment. You're going to go downhill eventually if this doesn't get resolved and there will still be plenty of pet stores for people to shop at so Petco wouldn't be missed. I too was treated more condescendingly than I ever have been in my life in a store (and I'm 67 years old, so this is saying something). I went in thinking I could get some compassionate advice over my elderly dog's eating habit changes. No way. Without knowing me or him I was told I spoiled him (nope), that he's a frufru dog (nope), etc. These are just examples, it went on and on. Was told sort of generally what to look for, but given no directions to find the vague product she'd suggested in the large store. The treatment actually took my breath away. It was as if speaking to a person who likes neither dogs nor other people. At all. I was about to leave but a kind young man who worked there listened and took me to products I could use. Walked in here today to pick up some dog food, and couple little things for my fish tank. I stopped and looked at the saltwater section and was horrified. 4 tangs in 4 different tanks, couldn't have been as thick as a sheet of paper and pale. Dead chocolate chip starfish upside down dead as hell. Dead/Dying anemones. Place should be ashamed of this. It would be better off, if they didn't even have a saltwater section. I wouldn't buy anything from this fish department unless you want to bring the plague home to your tank. The people who work here are generally lazy and nasty. On another occasion I was buying do food, appeared as if two registers were open, walked to the open register and was rudely told she wasn't open. Apparently she was just standing there looking stupid. Maybe she should have been scrubbing the damn fish tanks that have been neglected. read more

Kind of shocked to see the bad reviews for this store. I come here fairly often and I have ALWAYS been greeted when entering the store. I am always asked by employees if I need any help. In my opinion the amount of people working at this store with extensive fish knowledge blows pretty much any other corporate store out of the water. Also, as someone with anxiety, I have found every person who's stopped to help me really easy to talk to and friendly/professional. DO NOT buy fish from here!! I've had a fish tank with multiple fish in it for years and I recently bought 2 little orange fish about 2 weeks ago and slowly the other fish started dying. I don't think it's normal for 5 fish to die in a period of 2 days nor a coincidence. Not sure if it's some sort of bacteria they have on them or what but 0/10 would recommend. When my pup was a little uncharacteristically nervous, the groomer sat with us on the floor until she was confident enough to go back and get her nails trimmed. I come here often to get food for my furbabies. It's the only place I can find the specific food I need for one of my dogs due to her food allergies. The staff is very helpful if I have questions and I always love seeing the furry family members when people bring them in and I get to pet them. If you get a free PALS card you always get great sales deals on food and treats and just about anything in there. They always have sales. I just wish their grooming was a little bit cheaper. I've never felt so frustrated at someone as I did with their "New" Grooming manager. I would give 0 stars if i could. I accommodated the store by arriving an hour before my schedule appointment as requested by the groomer . When I arrive the grooming manager Candace was asking questions about my pet and anything health related. I was there In November 2021 mind you and no one said or asked me anything like she was. I replied and said nothing other than her cancer surgery last summer and a knot under her arm. She stop me in the middle of my sentence and said we cannot see your pet. When i asked why she said she needed a note from the vet stating she can be groomed since she had cancer. I've never EVER heard such a thing. The surgery was summer 2021. Petco just did a bath and groom in November 2021 and no issues. I'm applaud at the lack of empathy this manager showed. I was upset of course so my tone and demeanor changed. She couldn't handle that i was challenging her and wanting to speak with someone else. She just said she was the manager and she was making the call. She then said that I was on camera and that I needed to leave for raising my voice and she threaten to call the police on me. Like, what? I didn't even use a cuss word toward her. Anyone would be upset. This wasn't the first instance Petco turned me away, this was the second. The first time was a comment about my pets eye having a scratch and they couldn't be liable for any infection. Okay, fine. I get it. At that time i gave no grief and left. Not this time, sorry! They should have a pre-check in phone call to go over this information and ask questions prior to appointments to ensure people aren't making accommodations to bring in their pets, only to be turned away. We all have our own schedules, work and life. Call me A Karen if you will but I'm pretty fed up. My dog just needed a bath and hair cut. All i wanted was for Petco to take care of her and what was a note or phone call from my vet going to do but say, yes she good for grooming. My vet was closed on this day so ultimately, I had to leave and so i reported it to corporate. read more

I go here on a weekly basis fot kitty litter and food. I'm usually in and out in under 10 minutes. Pretty slow even on the weekends which is when i go most the time. people seem friendly enough but as I'm in and out so fast i dont talk to them much except for check out. the place is pretty clean also amd do the usual adoptions and dog classes as the other spots do. read more

Jan, at the Petco in Glen Allen, VA could not have been more condescending during my recent visit to their store. I just needed to make an even exchange on a defective product. Their return policy clearly states that they have a 100% satisfaction guarantee, but you never would have guessed that was the case by the way I was treated. They have lost me as a customer - over a $9.00 product. I have bought hundreds of dollars worth of products from them in the 10 years I have lived in the area. Not any more. If your looking for a helpful and full stock aquarium, you probably should go somewhere else. There's usually no worker around when you are looking to buy fish. The amount of fish isn't a lot either. The supplies for the fish are average and there aren't that much plants. I went to buy a fish and had to actively look for a worker, it took me roughly 15 minutes to find anyone. I seen fish in the aquarium that look dead for hours to days. There are better location. read more

This review is for the grooming aspect of PetSmart. I took my two Maltese girls in for a shave and bath, with claw trimming and anal gland cleaning. I sure wish I could remember the name of the gal that took care of them because she did a fantastic job of grooming them. Their fur was so matted, but that did not seem to bother the groomer at all. When I picked up my Lacy and Lilly I wanted to cry! They looked so beautiful! I have had a terrible experience once before, at a different groomer, so I was very nervous about the outcome. The groomer was very professional, and she really went the extra mile with my babies. I'll definitely be back, especially with their fair prices. read more
