I had an 8AM grooming appointment. The store opens at 9AM and in the past, I've shown up at 8AM only to wait in the parking lot until 9. At that time, I was told there is a glitch in the scheduling system and to always just bring the dogs in at 9 when the store opens. This time, they called me at 8:15AM to cancel both of my dogs because we were 15 minutes late. I live 5 minutes away and they wouldn't even take one of the dogs. My dogs can be a handful and I think they just didn't want to deal with them today. They do good work and I always tip them well but that's unacceptable customer service. I'll never go back to the Hamden PetCo for grooming. read more

Usually runs around $50 for your basic wash/dry and everyone has always treated my dude as a rockstar. My pup who is a crybaby but stays still when getting a bath, brushed and trimmed, apparently has caused trouble with cathy and she couldn't cut his hair but was able to trim him face, cut his nails, and clean his butt. Cathy is just lazy and didn't wanna cut his hair cause it would take too much of her time. We HIGHLY recommend NOT to book with cathy if you want your dog half done and smelling like an old person. Awful, Awful, Awful...the groomers at Petco in Hamden did a terrible job at grooming my 6 month old Goldendoodle!! I asked for a teddy bear cut and not too much off his body and they completely shaved his body and face and left a little on his head. What was the point of asking and having pictures if they wasn't going to follow directions! I'm pissed! Never, ever again! My puppy had a vaccination appointments scheduled at this location and they canceled three times which isn't inconvenient for them but for us since July 2022. This morning 8:28:33 I received a call from them and tried to return their call spoke a the front-end placed on hold waiting 6+ minutes rang back to the front they hang up. Incredible customer service. The staff somehow knows everything about everything! I bought my first fish tank 3.5 years ago there and am so happy with the purchase. I've had to go back several times for follow care and accessories and they are nothing but friendly and helpful. I honestly don't know who's managing this district but absolutely incredible job. I have been calling this location for over 3weeks to get my dog in for his grooming. I did speak to someone once bc I was looking for the girl that did his hair cut last time, well to find out she is no longer there. They told me someone would call me back to schedule a appointment, well Monday will be 4weeks and still no call back. I have called the main head quarters and put in a complaint and the person that answered that phone seemed not to care. Well guess what I care. And I will not let it end. The worst experience at Petco in Hamden CT. Not only was my dog grossly groomed; I firmly believe I was discriminated against due to my race. My miniature schnauzer was shaved to nearly her skin. She had some matting but did not require this cruelty. Her ears were cut and bleeding. Her schnauzer brows completely shaved almost to skin as pink areas are visible. Brow area had no matting. There appears to have been no care to truly assess prior to doing the hatchet grooming. Her nails were not properly groomed. When I arrived to pick her up, I was told to pay first . I did not get the chance to see my dog prior to paying. This is classic discriminatory treatment of Black consumers when the mythical belief that somehow we are thieves and we must pay first for a service that is completely inappropriate. Then the mitigating audacity to ask me to even give a tip prior to viewing my dog. The tip did not happen. I paid $72.00 for this horrific experience. I called their customer service which is also lacking of the very word of service. I called several times promised to have someone to return my call and until this moment of making this written review have not received a call. I have demanded to be refunded. The treatment of my dog borders on animal cruelty. A consumer report will also be filed with the state of connecticut. Just brought our King Charles Cavalier there for a much needed bath and haircut, Michelle in the grooming salon was AMAZING! I was unable to book an appointment in the app so called them direct, and they got me in within 2 days. Michelle was so kind and professional, my dog was totally comfortable with her, and he looked oh so cute and clean when he was done! Seriously, she works magic on these guys, the one she finished up just before him looked just as amazing. I also made some purchases in-store while waiting, the young man working (Tim I think) was very helpful in picking out dental products. Top notch operation here! read more

Expensive and overpriced. Once waited for 2 hours in no AC for my dog's shots (through Luv My Pet). Not sure if the wait was worth it the money saved- it was HOT and all the dogs were panting. I asked for a bowl/water for the dogs and Petco refused, saying that I had to buy one. It was their AC that wasn't working! Come on, it was for the hot doggies! Petco this is not acceptable. I was given this leopard gecko for free after I explained to the manager the horrible condition she is in. You as a company need to be more vigilant about who you are getting your reptiles from. This is clear neglect whether on your part or theirs. This is not the first time your company has been called out (a lot of times for leopard geckos specifically) this is terrible and you need to address the problem. If it's your supplier you need to get a new one and stop supporting a company that is breeding these animals and failing to give them proper care. No animal should ever suffer this kind of starvation and neglect. I am syringe feeding her at this point and she will be lucky if she survives. All of this could have been avoided. Also a side note. When you are keeping tons of babies crammed in one cage you need to be making sure EVERY animal is receiving food. If you're not paying attention other larger geckos will eat all of the food leaving the smaller weaker ones to starve. Please get it together or stop selling reptiles at all. Not OK. Pictures below show her spine prominent, no fat storage whatsoever in her tail, her emaciated legs and body. Her jaw is also slightly off indicating there is a degree of MBD as well. I called ahead and was told no appointments were needed for the quick services I required for our family dog because online there is not a way to book for simple add-ons only. Upon arriving to the Petco Groomer relatively early, I noticed that the one groomer I saw was busy with one pet, and another customer was inside waiting to be helped. Due to COVID restrictions, I decided to wait outside the door. I had no idea that my wait would be as long as it was. In addition, the one worker I saw, indeed saw me, but never fostered a smile or any type of acknowledgement to either of us waiting. We just continued to wait and wait and wait. So long so that I pondered leaving, but then decided to wait this out. After what seemed like 30 minutes, another groomer exited the back area to help the first gentleman waiting, I was still not acknowledged. Upon him exiting, I entered the grooming area to a very unfriendly/uncaring staff member (probably exhausted but, still not an excuse - I work in an ED, so I get it). I explained my needs and was simply told we are busy "try" coming back in two hours. Two hours? Try?? To my utter disappointment after being left standing and waiting outside the door, totally unrecognized by one of the staff members for an half hour and then told that we were not able to leave our dog and to come back in two hours, was really upsetting. Twice in one week, I was turned away after calling to be told no appointments are needed but unable to get a simple nail cut/grind and teeth brushing. Couldn't some have said something before I waited all this time. She just uncaringly insisted they were too busy and to try back. I explained that this was my second attempt to come this week, since I cannot make an appointment online for my needs, but this fell upon deaf ears. I was planning additionally planning on joining your new grooming club, but after I left the store called PetSmart, they said come right on over and that is where I will be doing ALL my business from now on. This petco offers grooming services, one of which is getting nails trimmed. It's advertised that you do not need an appointment, and it's a walk in service. Without fail, the main girl running the grooming there is irritated anytime I bring my dogs in - which is only once every 3-5 months. I understand the shop can get busy, and having a walk in can disrupt the flow. However, it is a service YOU OFFER, it's rude and unprofessional to treat any customer as if they are disturbing you. You as the groomer may not agree with the walk in policy, but you certainly have to abide by it. read more

As an abandon dog, he had never been groomed except for some ill-attempt by those who abandoned him. I went to pick him up and was told not to bring back, he was too difficult. I love coming to the Petco in Hamden to get my dog groomed. I always pick between two of the groomers but so far I got the same one twice. She takes such great care of my dog. She cuts her hair just right. With the cold weather coming she did a low cut to where my dog can still be warm but also looks clean. read more

This is the most unprofessional Petco I've ever been to and I will NEVER return again. This so happens to be my local Petco, so I frequent it often for various good and services. However, each time I come into this store I encounter some sort of hidden resentment/racism. I have never thought much about it, but kept it stored. Until today. Today I called to schedule s standard grooming appointment (spoke to Michelle) for my dog (Yorkie) and was told that my dog could no longer be seen at this store due to behaviors. This left me utterly confused, considering that we had not been seen at this location for grooming in over a year & my dog who is only approx. 7 pds had NEVER in her 8 years of living had a behavior issue (she very rarely even barks). After informing the rep. that this is false information, I asked to speak to a Manager. I spoke to an Asst, Mgr. who simply told me he would delete it from the file, but there was nothing more that could be done. This left me frustrated and confused and feeling very slighted. I spoke to Corporate regarding the issue which they simply documented. I recommend all minorities to stay out of this store. There is something deep going on here and I will continue to speak out about it. read more

The service here is very poor and the animal are far from healthy. every animal I've ever gotten from there has been sick and died, including the fish! The animals cages are unsanitary and dirty. The insects I buy for my pets are supposed to be live but yet every time I go there all dead or half way empty. Prices are also outrageous especially for their animals!! The new Petco is in a nice location at the corner of Dixwell & Skiff. We've been here several times since it moved and have been pleased by the service and increased floor space (compared to the old location). The store has a good selection of products at overall reasonable prices (some on are the high side compared to the neighboring Stop & Shop; others are just fine). read more

I love bringing my dog here to get washed. They are a little pricey but the ladies that work in the grooming department are friendly and do a great job on my short hair dog. We been bringing our dogs to Petco in Hamden, ct for 2 years to get groomed. The groomers do a nice job, especially on the haircut for our Shiutzu. They also will cut nails without an appt. The bath leaves the dogs smelling fresh and their coat feeling soft. They will also brush their teeth which is great because I can't get their mouths open to brush them at home. read more
