I came here to buy treats and toys for my dogs birthday. I've gotten free treats for my dogs birthday in the past. I asked the cashier, if my treats would qualify for free since it's my dogs birthday, and I showed proof on my petco account. She was new so she asked her manager, Des, and Des had a rude tone telling me I had to be a premier member. Which I have never been in the past. I wanted to clarify if I had to pay to be a premier member to get free treats, since in the past I wasn't, and she just kept on repeating if you have a reward or scan code then I can't do anything without answering nor clarifying my question. She was also talking to me from the furthest cashier instead of talking in person. She lacked customer service. The cashier working with me had more empathy than her which is a red flag to me. read more

Dishonest. They wanted me to initial a box that would have potentially made me liable for their screwup if something happened to my pet during grooming. They said that they would pay for it, but it did not say that as to where they wanted me to initial. If I had initialed it in something happened to my pet and we had gone to court, the judge would have said, "well you initialed it"! read more

Went to purchase two parakeets and the employee asked about my cage. I told her I have one already and was at home. She asked to see a picture of the cage.. like why would I have a picture of an empty bird cage on my phone I told her I don't have a pic. She went to get her manager. The manager told me i wouldn't be able to purchase the birds unless I buy a cage from them. So I bought their bird cage. like seriously trying to make you purchase products from their store. So I had to make a double trip just to return the cage the next day. this store is a hot mess! Do not recommend going there !!! Just wow ! Bird food was 15$ for 2 pounds when on Amazon it's 9$ for 5 pounds. When walking into the store.. everything is unorganized and boxes are on the floor. Not a very good first impression. read more

First time taking my doggies to get groomed here and Diana did an amazing job! The doggies smell amazing!!!

I have been taking my Pug to Petco for grooming the past 4 years, and the past 3 here in Elk Grove.  Initially, I wasn't happy with how my dog was treated, or how they treated me.  I kept going and changing groomers until I found the perfect one, Ariel.  For the past 2 years, every 2 months we go in for grooming and things have been great, never a missed appointment, great service etc. Then about 3 months ago, I brought my dog in for their grooming appointment the employee said I missed an appointment. I explained that is incorrect as my appointment was today. When the employee looked into the confusion, they found that they apparently had made a change to my appointment and never notified me.  Twice they called to reschedule, all the while customer service was back to where we started...rude, and unprofessional. This last appointment I was told Ariel is not available and had to choose another groomer and a new time/day. Typically for my grooming appointments knowing the traffic down Laguna and Elk Grove Blvd, I leave 10/15 minutes early. I arrived 15 minutes before my appointment, which is typical if there are no traffic issues.  Past practice is if the groomer is busy, she calls someone over to check in my dog or they will stop and check us in and place my dog in a cage until she's ready. Upon arrival I was waiting at the check in desk and the groomer was grooming another dog. She looked over and saw me, I saw her reach and grab her phone and text someone; shortly after another employee walked up, passed me and they chatted in the grooming room. The second employee then walks out and says, "Your appointment is at 10, correct?" To which I said, "Yes," and they walked away saying nothing else or acknowledging my response.  At this point it is 11 minutes to 10 and I've been standing there for 4 minutes.  I stood waiting for another 4 minutes when the manager walked past me (no acknowledgement) and went in to talk with the groomer.  Finally, I turned to the second employee who is now at the cash register and is just standing there doing nothing and said, "Is anyone going to check me in?"  This is after 8 minutes of standing there while each of them passed me with no acknowledgment.  Her response, "Your appointment is at 10, right?! That is what you said?!!" My response, "10 minutes is early is better rather than 10 minutes late, right?" I have reached the final straw of how they treat their customers, I walked out and told her to cancel my appointment! I have two spoiled dogs, that get groomed, outfits, leashes, collars, and lots of food and treats all of which are purchased at this location. I'm certain I've spend a few thousand over the years and I will never spend another penny at this store!  All this could have been prevented by a simple "Looks like you are early, unfortunately, we cannot take her in until the exact appointment time." Or something to that effect, but to walk by us as if we were not standing there and treated this way by all three employees (one of which is MANAGEMENT), this obviously is an acceptable practice of theirs. read more

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!This is the second time they cancel my appointment due to "Petco policy" I have an 8 year old dog and I've been taking her to get groomed for years now. Had no issues with MJ ( sadly no longer a groomer). Today the lady who saw her( Laura ) yanked on her neck and my already scared dog growled and "bit" her thumb and automatically stated that she couldn't groom her because she was "aggressive " I was extremely upset with her rude attitude and lack of understanding. I answered a questionnaire before taking her and marked down that she could get aggressive as well but never was I notified that this was an issue . Never taking my dogs here again. read more

Came in for more dog food today. They were out of stock of the size we needed in the small breed Orijen brand. Sarah has excellent customer service and was very accommodating. She went out of her way to make sure we went home with what we needed not having to pay more. This is why we choose Petco over Petsmart. I am writing about the recent remodel of the store because I am so disappointed for several reasons. It's difficult to find what you are looking for. It seems kinda dark inside. But my main concern is that before, the cats used to have a separate room with a door to be able to go in and visit with them. Now they are just in cubbies on the wall! The elderly lady who cares for them was struggling to change their bedding, water etc. without the fear of one just hopping out and running out of the store and onto the street???. Totally unacceptable! The way the birds etc. We're displayed was much nicer and items were much easier to find. it was so much better before and I think it could have been planned out much better. Went in yesterday with my sons to pick out a tank set up and an African dwarf frog. We decided on a nice 5 gallon tank and the girl told me she couldn't sell me a frog unless I bought a 10 gallon tank. Everything I've read online says the size tank I'd chosen would be perfect for up to two frogs, but she refused. Funny she suddenly seemed to care so much about their animals wellbeing seeing as how they keep their betas in teeny little cups. We decided to take our business elsewhere. read more

Just had an absolutely horrible experience with their grooming department. I will say it is partially my fault as I was late, but once I got there the door to the grooming section was closed, called twice and transferred over to grooming and no one would pick up. Waited around until 9:00AM when the store opened and went in through the front door, then over to grooming. wait around a couple of minutes, finally "Riley" pops her head out from the back and tells me I'm late and she can't take my dog now. I tell her, "I understand I was late, however I couldn't get in earlier as the door to grooming from outside was closed, and you didn't answer the phone the 2 times I called". She falsely tells me she has been answering the phone and then says it doesn't matter, she can't take my dog. A little customer service goes a long way, she could have simply asked me when she could reschedule me for, but didn't even offer that. Accused of stealing. I went in today with my mom to get my puppy (who can be a handful) a harness. I went here in particular because this location previously helped me pick out a great harness for my last pup. This was not my experience, and we ended up with no help and no harness (which is not completely the issue). We grabbed some treats for my pup and tennis balls, but put the tennis balls back as they were peeling and could pose a danger to a puppy. The blonde lady at the front interrogated me about whether I was getting anything else, to which i said no, to which she responded "what about the tennis balls". I stated we put them back, and she requested that we hand them to her. As soon as she saw that we had indeed put them back, she backtracked, stating she just didn't want them misplaced. All of this while I'm trying to keep my 5 month old puppy calm and behaved. Definitely not the way to approach the situation. I have worked in retail and with disgruntled customers and clients for years, and would never speak to someone that way or accuse them of stealing. I hate writing bad reviews, and appreciate all of the people working through the pandemic and how hard things can be right now. But, I have been a loyal customer for years, going with my pets through Petco training packages, grooming etc. this location just isn't it. PS they also cancelled my grooming appointment last minute, but were later able to take my dog in (even though his ears were dirty and paws not proper groomed-with hair growing in between his paw pads). I didn't want to write a bad review because the groomer was great with my dog in ever other respect. The horrible treatment we received today was the last straw. read more

Came here to purchase water conditioner for my aquarium. I ended up not using the product and tried to return it within a few hours. Dealing with the same cashier ,she called her manager since I didn't have the receipt, would not give me a refund. They could have checked since I had used a debit card for the purchase. Shout out to the ladies working last night at the Petco on Laguna Blvd. I needed a dog coat (for my baby goat) and popped in last night after work. I walked in at 8:50 when they closed at 9:00. After working in retail, I don't like being that customer so I was trying to find what I needed quickly. Coats were all on clearance in a cart and I couldn't find the size I needed. Not only were both employees very nice and patient, one even helped me dig through the jackets to find the one I needed. I was the last customer - they literally locked the door after I walked out - they never made me feel rushed - the employee at the counter even asked to see pictures of my baby goat. read more

Petco has REALLY changed. I took my daughter in today to pick out her first hamster. She has been waiting and preparing for over a year now. She doesn't ask for much and I am not one those parents that over indulges at my child's every wish/demand. She truly earned her first pet and I was equally excited to take her because I too have owned several hamsters as a child and even as an adult so I fully understand the care needed. You can say I am experienced with owning small pets. I remember the excitement of picking out my first hamster and I wanted to share that with her. When we went in the store was way understaffed but this is besides the point. The sales agent was actually very nice. When I asked if we could see and handle a particular hamster my daughter picked out, I was surprised when the sales agent said, "Oh, I'm sorry we can't take the hamsters out because it's a bit over whelming for them." Ok, I get that they don't want to startle the little critter. But I really wanted my daughter to be able to fully understand and connect with the pet before buying it. I said, "I would like my daughter to hold it to fully make sure it's the right pet for her." We researched that the teddy bear hamster would be the best fit to be handled a lot, plus I have owned several and always been pretty happy with them. My daughter was still excited and wanted to hold it to make 100% sure. I saw nothing outrageous with this simple request. We were maybe 2 of 4 total customers in the entire store so the excuse of "overwhelming" the hamster was not valid. My question was, "Why even buy a live pet here if we can't even know if it will be a 100% perfect fit." The sales agent proceeded to explain I could buy it with the necessary accessories and return it within 30 days if not fully satisfied. I did not want to go to all that trouble. I simple wanted to hold the hamster to make sure it was the right pet. I was so surprised and a bit sad for my daughter when the sales agent refused. I thought, wow! Gone are the days of the true pet store where you could handle the critter before taking him home. Petco has become nothing more than a big pet food box store. My daughter was crushed. I did not buy the hamster. The sales agent wouldn't even offer to handle it herself. My daughter is 9 so she couldn't understand the rational either. "Dad, why even buy a hamster if I can't see it or hold/experience it?" she asked. I brought it up to the cashier on the way out and I simple got, "Oh I only groom the dogs here, I'm sorry I can't help you." My daughter was sad, she had tears in her eyes the whole drive home. She's not a "spoiled" child so she knew it just wasn't meant to be. As a father I felt crushed for her. I told her, "Don't worry, we'll keep looking. We'll go to a different pet store, we'll try one that isn't quite just a pet food store." WOW, Petco, you've gone WAY down hill in the whole exciting, "I am buying my first pet experience." You've crushed my daughter with poorly trained sales staff or a policy that is sterile and out of touch of the excitement of buying your first pet. Sorry to say I am not a fan anymore. Your new name should be PetBOXSTOREONLYco. You're nothing more than a large chain food & supply store that happens to sell live pets that you can buy if you're ok with them just sticking them in a box for you to take home. The customer service here is wonderful! I was looking for fish food, and the employees were very polite and helpful, and gave me a lot of advice on fish. The rodent section is well-organized, and it's a lot of fun to see the room full of adoptable cats. However, prices (at least for fish supplies) here are a lot higher than the Petsmarts on Laguna and East Stockton. The bettas are also more expensive, but they offer more Betta varieties than Petsmart. There isn't very many selections in this Petco, such as fewer models of Betta bowls and types of fish food. Also, when I visited, there was a odd odor once I entered the store. It caused me to stare at the floor while I walked to make sure I wasn't going to step in whatever I was smelling. The fish section is not very appealing to visit; it's a lot darker than the rest of the store and sometimes the floor gets wet. Extra tip: Don't touch that water fountain near the aquarium; the water is disturbingly hot and unpleasant! :( This is not a place to get really thirsty. read more

This was my first time at petco. I was looking for a doggie gate, but damn it was expensive. Like I could make my own and it would be less. The customer service I got was good however! I also accidentally took a dog tag out of the store without noticing and by the time I noticed I was already home and when I went back they were like "Oh thanks!" I WAS LIKE NOOO PETCO SECURITY CAMERAS PROBABLY SAW ME. Otherwise, they have a variety of items here. The beds here are super cheap compared to Pet Club so I might have to come here to get a new bed for my growing puppy! There are a lot of toys on sale and I find the set up very organized. Made an appointment at 10AM, around 2/3 days in advance, and I even called the store to make sure literally telling her I'd make the appointment on the website for that time and date. I put in my phone number incorrectly apparently so that's the excuse they're using to say I didn't have confirmation of appointment. I got TWO EMAILS confirming my appointment. Does this look unconfirmed to you? I don't understand how that's possible. They then told me they could get me in at 11:30, but by then, my cat would've already been in a cage for almost 2 hours. They either have a bad system or incompetent office staff, not sure which, probably BOTH, but I'm not going to be coming back here either way because not only was it a waste of my time, it was horrible for my cats anxiety. Its prolly more like 3.5 stars but whatevs Petco! You cool in my book!! So my review is mostly for the grooming department. I have to say even tho it still looked a little grimy, like they could use a DEEP CLEANING ...not just "sweep"...it STILL looked way better in there than Petsmart in elk grove! Yikes! And I felt like the groomer was more "honestly" friendly. Not just superficially friendly and then when you leave they are mean to your pet. I'm not saying that's what I experienced anywhere else but.... Edited to add: my dog is a Black lab so we just go to groomers for bath, nail trim, etc. He doesn't have to get a haircut! Anyway, the other good thing is petco now carries Taste of the Wild brand pet food! It's more expensive than at pet club tho...the largest bag by $10! Still happy to finally see it there. If I could give 0 stars I would. Wasted so much of my time due to lack of training. Booked an appointment for my new puppy and called to see what they needed, they said first two rounds of puppy shots, plus there was a 2 week wait to get an appointment. Got there and they said she needed Bordatella. Called from Petco and talked to my vet to make the appointment, asked if she needed anything else, they said no and booked her appointment for almost two more weeks. Got there and they said she now needs Rabies shots even though my vet doesn't have those scheduled for a few more weeks. Why didn't they tell me this when THEY booked the appointment!!!! Long story short I wasted hours in store trying to get her groomed and a month of my time and now have to wait weeks to get her in somewhere else because I don't trust this level of incompetence. Her hair is so overgrown that she can barely see and I have to use a ponytail to keep the hair out of her eyes and urine and feces get in her hair when she uses the restroom. Totally unacceptable level of service and professionalism. I would say do better but I don't trust them with my dog after all of this. read more

This is for GROOMING SERVICES at the LAGUNA BLVD. LOCATION! The staff was super nice, helpful, and experienced! The grooming area is pretty small though. Your basic groom was $47 but I had no problems with that! It was definitely worth it! They handled my puppies with care! At Petsmart, I would get my dogs back with either razor burn or a patch, most of the times it was razor burn! So I'm pretty happy with my experience here at Petco! I loved how they had different/more razor guards! My dogs didn't have to be shaved completely (as Petsmart didn't have many options). I would definitely get my dogs groomed here!! As for the store...it is cheaper at Petsmart!! I get my food and treats at Petsmart!! Also, I love the vet clinics that come here!!! So, much cheaper than Banfield shots...but if you need a doctor visit...definitely go to Banfield! Lol. Petco vs Petsmart lol...there are pros and cons to each! Lol. Grooming...PETCO!! After walking around the store, we were approached by Saylor who said she found a few in a recent shipment and could open the boxes and pull some out for us. Seeing where they were, it would have been a process for her to get one out but she was insistent that it wasn't a problem and she didn't mind. The groomers are rude and treat the costumers poorly especially Bahar! I didn't like any of them. I will not take my dog back to them ever again. Nor will I recommend them to any of my coworkers or friends!!! I brought my dog in for her matted her to be removed and for her to receive a "poodle cut." They told me to arrive at 5 pm and my dog still wasn't ready. I had to wait an additional 40 minutes. My baby girl looked awful . I didn't even recognize her. She is a miniature Schnauzer but the cut made her look like a chihuahua!! I was so angry !! The groomer told me not to come back if my dogs hair was matted and if she continues to nip! I took her advice!! I will never put my fur baby through that ordeal with them again. I can't believe Petco's management approves of this behavior. Recently I've been coming in more to see the fish/aquarium side and the two employees that I talked to were very knowledgeable in that area. They are also really nice and go out of their way to help customers. I'm not one to publicly complain about businesses. But PETCO in Elk Grove and it's grooming dept crossed the line. I took my dog in to get his nails trimmed. Apparently their processes have changed, normally they do him on the floor (he's 67lbs), this time he had to be on a table and the leash that they use is very thin and it rubbed his neck horribly. The groomer was allowing me to help she was new. The "new" manager came in halfway through the trim and was concerned because I was at the table with my dog. The groomer had no help and there was no concern by anyone else. read more
