What a great location! My partner and I frequent this location as well as drive past several other stores just to go to this one. They seem to really take great care of their animals, and I thoroughly can't say enough great things about Andy. Andy is someone who works often there, and he truly cares about the animals and the customers. You can usually find him tending to the fish. He's helped us out SEVERAL times and now knows us pretty well, and we always know we will be taken care of there by Andy. Kylie is also very sweet and kind, and she really made my check out experience nice. She was super friendly and helpful and also just made our last trip enjoyable. This will always be my first choice location. They stay in stock rather well and are very organized. They also are rather clean, and that is always a nice touch to a place, especially that has to do with animal care. read more

This store does not reliably stock my dog's food. I buy Iams beef or lamb pate canned food, and 2 out of 3 visits, I will try the store and find none on the shelf. It is so frustrating to go to a pet store, and not find pet food. There sure is a lot of shelf space for costumes and other pet related junk. I am forced to buy it on Amazon. This Petco is okay. I don't love it, I don't hate it. It's convenient to my house so I occasionally go here when I need something. They have a decent selection of pet food but don't carry the higher end food that I like to buy. I also don't typically find any really great buys here. Some of the other pet stores I go to tend to have better sales. That being said, I feel like the regular prices are pretty good. Staff here is friendly and helpful. Store seems to be well stocked. Petco has really improved over the years. About a decade ago, I found their prices to be much higher and their selection limited compared to other shops . However over the years they seemed to have changed for the better. Their prices are more inline with other stores and they've added a wider selection of pet foods. They are also quick to match prices of competitors and even their own online prices which can be cheaper at times. Customer service at this location is good. Staff is friendly and helpful. read more

Since purchasing my son's beloved Beardie (B. T.) I have to purchase crickets every week to 2 weeks depending on how many I purchase. I've found that 25 is barely enough and 50 is too many. I have not found the sweet spot just yet. However, each visit the reptile staff person works to help me find what best suits our Beardie. We are new reptile owners, so I need all of the help that I can get. I appreciate the smiling faces and each staff member that offers to help as I enter and walk through the store. They never make me feel like I ask too many questions or that any question is a dumb question. When I was a dog only owner we only came in to buy treats, harnesses, cables, and other items for our four legged family members. I've never needed as much help as I do now, but I truly appreciate it. With any bit of luck our Beardie will have a long life and I will be here to purchase his meals in the future. read more

They may as well close their grooming department! For months now it's been impossible to make a grooming appointment online or even over the phone...you must walk in and wait for groomer to finish what they're doing (10-15 min), then book your future appointment. TODAY I had appointments booked for my 2 dogs. When I arrived, an associate told me that they didn't have groomers on Mondays. I showed her my 2 text confirmations showing my Monday appointments, then asked to speak to the manager. The manager, with no apologies, told me I was booked with so-and-so, and that so-and-so was no longer with them. Then the manager, with no apologies, said that my confirmation was from an automated system (like that exonerated her from any wrongdoing). No apology, no can I rebook your appointments, no how can we make this right...just a blank stare. I'm rebooked at PetSmart! read more

Very convenient location at the Grove in Hoover. Plenty of parking and as with most pet stores dog friendly. Staff is exceptionally nice and give love to your pets as you take them window shopping. Great selection of dog food, treats, toys, collars/leashes, over the counter medicines, beds, etc. In addition to the dog stuff they have full set up for aquariums/fish, cats, reptiles, birds, and of course all the rats, mice, hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, etc from the rodent family. No trip is complete without a thorough stroll down the toy aisle's for my dog to carefully select which toy will fall victim to the play fest that will take place the second we get home. Good quality toys that are pretty durable even for a large dog. Prices are reasonable and they have various levels of most items. Inexpensive to more expensive options. Quality improves with price point, but it's nice to have some options depending on how much you want to spend. Great location and experience. Recommend! read more

He loves to go see Jackie every week for his bath---once he realizes that the car is headed to PetCo his tail starts thumping and he can hardly sit still! He walks (hops) on his back feet from the car into the store--every time!!! Heather, Nash's human, appreciates Jackie's attention to detail and the cute haircuts she gives him to keep him looking his best. She is gentle and patient, and puts up with a little doggy pouting--ahem, growling-- when his belly gets shaved and his nails get trimmed. It might be hard for you to differentiate between all the big box pet stores. It is for me as well. I can't speak for the others, but I can tell you about my experience at Petco recently. 1. It was clean. I'm one of these weirdos with specific animal allergies (especially cats) and I never had the slightest sniffle. 2. There were lots of cool animals to check out. Ferrets, birds, snakes, turtles, fish, and rats among many others. 3. There was a large variety of every food available for your pet. 4. If there is a toy, bed, or outfit that has been made for a pet... They have it. 5. While I didn't partake in this, they had a large section for grooming. Best thing I have ever spent money on!! We got a dog from the humane society in February and she just wouldn't listen to anything we asked her to do and could not trust her at all. We decided to get her in dog training lessons (she was about 6 months when we started) and they put her in adult 1 class. (We bought the package of adult 1 & 2) she took a while, but eventually it clicked! She is like a whole new dog now! She is as sweet as can be, listens to us, and now I almost never have to put her on a leash at all! She is so well behaved, she sits, lays, comes, and gives us a high five when told. I would recommend taking classes to anyone! The trainer Brody is amazing and really knows what he's doing. It might be a little annoying to have to go to a class every week for a while, especially with the craziness of life, but it is most definitely worth it!! read more

Came in to get an aquarium and left with a good deal. They had a promo for a dollar per gallon on aquariums. Yey saved almost 50%. Joshua and the staff were helpful too. Only wish they sold rabbits like the pet stores in California. Other than that I think they have a better selection of fishes than the pet smart in town. read more

I HATE PetCo. Every experience at this location has been a bad one. The employees don't help you. They aren't knowledgeable about dogs and worst of all, the other customers who shop at this location.... they are the worst. I cannot tell you how many times I've almost had my dog jumped by other dogs in line and their ignorant owners who don't understand MY DOG DOESNT WANT YOUR DOG ON TOP OF HIM. I have given this location multiple chances and I really need to remind myself. This place is not worth your time. There is PetSmart and Pet Supplies Plus within a few miles. Go there. Petco is definitely a waste of time that will leave you angry or annoyed. I love my animals and spend lots of money on them. I must tell you the amazing people in this store bend over backwards for their customers. I was in here with a litter of puppies I found in a dire situation plus two adult dogs. One man helped me safely get all them out my truck, inside and assisted me in bathing them. They made sure I had medical paperwork to prevent spreading illness and for that I applaud them. They helped me find collars in the clearance bin to fit all my foster pets. They didn't have to do that but saving $4 a collar when buying 10 enabled everyone to have one on instead of just the adults. The young man saw I didn't have it properly closed and did it correctly for me. That thoughtful act may make the difference between the puppies getting loose and running away. If I could give them more stars a I would. Thank you for everything you do for your customers and the rescue industry. It doesn't go unnoticed or unappreciated. It's hard to find a self service bathing room and I appreciate you for continuing to have them. For less than $10 one can groom their pets in a comfortable safe environment with all supplies included including a waterproof apron. This is a fantastic location. The store is always kept clean and well lit, shelves are always stocked and the staff is friendly and knowledgeable. We had our Malamute trained there and Amanda was FABULOUS! She knew tons about large dogs and animal behavior in general. The staff really help you find appropriate foods and treats. The grooming center does a great job and takes extra time to really brush our dog out and take care of his thick undercoat. They give them a bag of treats from the treat bar for their birthdays, and they even get a free treat when they come in the store! We rarely go anywhere else. read more

My 5lb miniature Maltese had one of the best grooming this past weekend at this Petco by a new groomer named Watson. Watson gave him the best 'teddy bear' face trim and cut him short for his 'summer look' but not shaved just as requested. He trimmed his nails and was very gentle with him. Have used this Petco grooming many times before but our usual groomer no longer works there so Watson was new groomer to us. I highly recommend him and will definitively ask for him again. read more

This place should be shut down or investigated. I visited this location for the first time today to pick up some crickets (having been to many Petco stores before) and was absolutely disgusted with the conditions and treatment of the animals. Despite a label specifying humidity requirements, the humidity was so low in one of the tanks that a snake suffocated in his own dry attempted shed. A crested gecko lay dead in the middle of the tank after very clearly choking on a large piece of substrate (which was made of chunks of wood and placed in a tank full of baby lizards). There were newborn bearded dragons, small enough to be days old. At least one didn't look too good, and was probably dead. I have bred bearded dragons, so I know that age/size is too young and unsafe to sell, especially to inexperienced owners. The newborn bearded dragons were in the same tank as much older near-adolescent dragons. In fact, one large male was extremely bloated (and acted aggressive) so I would not be surprised if he ate one of the newborns. There were so many animal health violations that I cannot believe this place is still running. When I tried to alert an employee about the dying/dead crested gecko, with (unlikely) hopes that he may still have some life in him if someone pulled the bark out of his throat, the employee told me that an employee called in sick so there were only two on duty (not nearly enough for such a massive store and combined grooming facility). He told me that the only one who can handle reptiles was currently too busy with a dog and couldn't help the dying animal. I waited around for ten minutes and no one ever came by to help the lizard, which had definitely died by that point if he wasn't dead already. It was tragic and wasteful and cruel. This location does not care about the wellbeing of their animals. I would not buy pets from this store because I would be too afraid that they would die soon after from illness and mistreatment. This store should be shut down if the pets are not their priority and if they're willing to let animals suffer and die needlessly under their watch. read more
