This place reminds me of the shelter I have worked at for 13 years, minus the commitment to matching animals with appropriate adopters. I could be any old person and they would give me any dog I wanted, literally no questions asked. I find that strange, but maybe its a southern thing? We adopted a dog from there a few months ago and he is a douche, but we love him :)They wouldn't let us walk the dogs, which is weird, and they were resistant to letting us even go outside with the dog, or be alone with the dog for 2 seconds...I also felt like it was hard to drag information about the dogs from the staff....and I definitely didn't get a sense of support from this organization, and definitely knew that once we signed that paper, we were on our own. I am very disappointed with my experience with Pet Helpers, which hurts because fo all the wonderful animals that pass through. My family found a dog on their website, infact my 6 year old son hugged my computer screen when he saw her. I met her and had a meet and greet with a cat to ensure she was good with them (we have 2). I brought my son in an Sat. Morning to meet Gracie. He played with her for an hour. We walked through the shelter to dicuss adopting her. I got an adoption application and said I had to talk to my husband. I took out my phone and walked outside. Apparently they called another couple who brought their dog in to meet Gracie. I walke back in (never left the property) with the filled out application, and my money. The other woman walked in a minute later, she asked if we were adopting Gracie, I said yes. She was ready to leave but one of the staff decided it was a sticky situation since 2 were interested in one dog. I was informed since my husband was not there, and hers was they were going with the other lady-plus she brought her dog in for a meet and greet... My son lost it. They claim first come first serve, and that was us. He ran back to Gracie's kennel, no one (except the WONDERFUL volunteers) would look at us, or apologize. I have tried to contact them via email and facebook. I really just want an apology, for their behavior. Gracie was technically supposed to be ours. Absolutely disgusted in a staff member named Stephanie, whom I suppose decides if your worthy of meeting a dog your serious about adopting. The first time I went to Pet Helpers was late one afternoon and I was interested in seeing two chihuahuas they had on their website and was kindly greeted by a young man who offered to bring them into a small room in the dog area. We sat down on the floor and played with them for quite a while. Although I fell in absolute love with them, they were 11, and 12 years, and my boyfriend and I talked later that night and decided we would like to have a little bit younger dogs so we wouldn't lose them in a couple years. (It killed me) I kept looking! A week later I saw a 7 year old yorkie mix who melted my heart! I went in to meet her only to be brought into that small room again, with a lady named Stephanie, to be interrogated immediately. Any dog I adopt wouldn't be alone for more than an hour a day.. this lady was not even concerned, the second she heard "boy friend" she became snotty and said that we would both have to be here to meet and greet with her and fill out applications. I understand wanting to get their dogs to great homes! I am a dog LOVER! This girl literally made me feel like I was in trouble for trying to adopt a dog. How dare I? Establishments like this are why people buy dogs off of Craigslist for 25$ and end up back in shelters. This lady literally had me in tears leaving this place. I was so happy to take my 10 month puppy to pet helpers and only spend $150 for her spay, toe nails clipped, and microchip. I was so relieved to save such a bundle that I recommended pet helpers to all of my friends with canines and ranted about the excellent customer service, friendly staff, and welcoming atmosphere. I was reassured of my hesitation to take her to such a cheap veterinarian when her stitches ripped open within two days due to her excessive licking. After spending 6 hours in the 24 hour veterinary care, the Veterinarian informed us of his confusion as to why she did not receive an e-collar. Dogs will literally rip their intestines out without hesitation if they are not given a protective collar. He said he tells every patient's parents to keep him/her in an e-collar and its important to crate them for the next 7-10 days so this type of situation doesn't happen. Her stomach walls could have easily been infected which could have cost us $1000. I spent $600 for her surgery and now she has a gauze connected to her stomach, will be on 11 different pills every day for 10 days. Pet Helpers failed to do their job correctly and I would recommend not getting any veterinary care from this place. read more

Lets see if they take down this review too. Pet Helpers should change their name to Pet Killers, because thats what happened to me. Pet Helpers cares nothing about your pet, friend, family member before they get there and they will care even less after you leave. I took my best friend, a cute lively full of life Pug, not even 3 years old, to have him neutered. He died a little over 24 hours later after picking him up from Pet Helpers. I called them that same day, stating he was woozy and not himself, I was assured he was fine and just overcoming the effects of the medications. The next morning he was worst and was falling over, I called again and they said take him to your vet. I rushed him to my vet and despite their best effort to save him from the carelessness of Pet Helpers, he died at 1am the next day, just hours after taking him to my vet. I now have a vet bill of around $1200 plus I have watched my best friend suffer and die. When I called Pet Helpers, they informed me things like that happen. Did they care about my Pug suffering, did they care about my loss and pain, NO! They tell you about how much they love animals, but their words have no moral authority nor do they put anything into action. To them it was my tough luck and no skin off their back. They are nothing more than a snip and cut factory. Take my advice and take your pet/friend to a real vet who knows your friend and will give them the best possible care. They know his history and will know if it safe or recommended to have any procedure done. If you want to gamble with your pets life, take them to Pet Helpers and save a few bucks, maybe. Spend the extra money on a real vet that cares, I wish I did. read more

My husband and I adopted a small miniature poodle mix "Brooks" (now named Moon Doggie) from Pet Helpers about 3 weeks ago. He had just been received from another animal shelter and had been on the list there to be put to sleep due to overcrowding, but was offered to Pet Helpers for adoption. Our Moonie had been housed with "Templeton" (now Hank) at Pet Helpers and we played with both of them. Moonie has saved my husband and me from deep sadness due to having to have our little 14 yr. old yorkie/maltese mutt put to sleep recently, when he became too ill and had no joy left. We feel that Mojo found Moonie for us. Pet Helpers has a great website that I watched for the right dog. I checked it constantly every day for new arrivals. It has immediate updates. The people working there are loving and allowed us to spend good time with Moonie, while seeing if he was our dog or not. The facility is very clean and orderly. these people are completely incompetent!! I was completely disregarded while trying to adopt a puppy from them. Id recommend anyone wanting to adopt a pet to go somewhere else. I wouldn't try to deal with Pet Helpers Adoption Center ever again!!! read more

I cannot say enough about Pet Helpers....I have two cats from this shelter (both are next to me helping me type this review) and they are so well trained and wonderful...The volunteers and employees work hard to ensure that all of the animals are loved and cared for. As kittens and puppies they have people who work with the animals to train them to be well behaved indoor animals...The shelter is incredibly clean and the staff goes above and beyond for the animals and people who are stopping through for a visit or to adopt an animal :) read more

Nice building and inviting atmosphere - at first. The front desk people didn't seem to care or even notice you were there. Once back in the dog room, staff seemed reluctant to help and their dogs were INSANELY expensive. There was an old poodle (like 13 years old), who the staff told us had a bunch of health problems for $300! You'd think they'd hope someone would just give this poor dog a home, not try and turn a profit! When I asked about it, staff was rude and sort of ignored us (sort of told us if we couldn't afford that we didn't need a dog - this was not about affordability). Too bad, I guess they try and make money from their animals rather than save them and raise donations. I went to the Animal Society, everyone was great and I adopted a dog, they made me feel like I was making a difference and rescuing a dog rather than purchasing one. Totally different approaches. I made a donation right then and there and will again. I live on James Island so its too bad I have to drive to North Chas to find a group that reflects the values they profess. read more

i resently adopted a dog for here. she is great but i was given an inacurate medical history, i had to call and have that faxed to me 3 days after i got her, and on top of that her ivaheart(heartworm provention) AND trifectux( flea and tick prevention) were not correctly given once a month as directed, it was a month LATE when i adopted her. the staff are pushy rude people. i have another dog that is not spayed due to medical reasons. my vet whos been in the field 40+ yrs advised against it. when looking at my dog i was adopting i was cornered for 30 minutes with this woman trying to force me to get the procedure done and the woman was giving me inacurate facts. i worked at a no kill shelter before but i would have lost my job if i had conducted myself the way this woman did.
