My sweet pup with a hurt eye waiting in the car
    Lauren M.

My pup came in after a regular walk and couldn't open her right eye. Of course it was a Saturday evening when the vet was closed until Monday morning. After almost an hour of trying not to overreact, I called the Towson ER and was told they were not taking any more appointments. Same with Hunt Valley. I got on the Bel Air ER waitlist and had 19 people ahead of me and told it could be several hours before I was contacted to bring her in. Found the Columbia Pet ER and called to ask if they would take her. The woman I talked to was sooo nice and helpful, unlike when I called the Bel Air ER and was rushed off the phone and hung up on. We drove 35 minutes to the Columbia location and followed the directions to text to check in. We did wait in the car about an hour and 10 minutes before getting a text to bring her inside. The triage did not take long and they even sent me and my daughter up in an empty exam room to hang out. Fortunately I brought a book and we both had our tablets to watch tv. 2 and a half hours later and we had a scratched cornea diagnosis, medication and a cone of shame. The cost for everything was actually a lot less than I anticipated and having pet insurance will get me about 50% back. The fact that we got in, seen and out in the time before I was even contacted back from Bel Air goes to show how great this pet hospital is.

Our pup Sunday was NOT happy either!

If I could give it no stars, I would! Don't take your pet here for a real emergency! Our Pomeranian had a nasty cough and was.making a gagging sound. We are new dog owners and probably way to cautious, but she appeared to be getting worse. We took her, here and after an x-ray, we were told she swallowed something and that she would eventually pass whatever it was out of her system and the cough would stop. We still didn't know what she swallowed, but happy to learn that was working it's way out of our pups system. We took her home, and after a few more days, it was getting worse, and something didn't seem right; we took her to a vet, and they informed us our puppy had canine infectious respiratory disease a.k.a (kennel cough!)! Really! Pet+ER, you don't know what a kennel cough sounds like!! They had no issues charging us a $500.00 fee for a bogus diagnosis! Had they been competent, we could have had it diagnosed and treated earlier. Even though dogs typically recover from kennel cough within a few weeks. The secondary infections could lead to complications that could do more harm than the disease itself!!! They only cared about the $500 not diagnosing our puppy correctly!!! if you're running a pet ER; I'm CONVINCED you should know a kennel cough when you hear it!! If not, you should not be opened! Wasted visit, wasted money!!

Picking up our girl, she wanted to stay.

We've taken Thunder and Moonshine to this location. It's a lot closer than their "sister" facility (AAVEC) in Annapolis to us. Both of our dogs have come in both for ER and for specialists. Our last visit (during COVID shut-down) was for our boy Thunder. He had uncontrolled bleeding from an injury at midnight, and he was triaged right in and stabilized. Our then puppy Moonshine, was also an overnight patient when she was having GI tract problems after having a parasitic infestation (worms). She received excellent care and attention. She wanted to stay! Follow-ups with her specialist were enjoyable because she loved coming it.

    RIP :(

STAY AWAY!! I have worked in the veterinary industry for 15 years and never dealt with such incompetence. TL; DR: I paid $2000+ for Columbia Pet ER to NOT do the two things I brought my cat there for. I made it very clear to the doctors and staff that my cat was at this ER to A) Have his abdominal fluid tapped so he could be more comfortable, and be observed overnight for this; and B) Consult with an oncologist in the morning re: his ultrasound because his primary vet believed he had cancer. I tried to get him into AVIM oncology but they were booked for over a month, so they suggested I go through the Pet ER (which shares a facility with AVIM). This route obviously costs a LOT more money but I was desperate to get my cat seen as soon as possible. Since it is an ER, I expected a wait but we established early on that my cat was staying the night for observation post-fluid tap; so I did not understand why after 2 hours of waiting in the car and hearing absolutely NOTHING, I was told that I could not leave. After 3 hours, they finally said my cat had not yet been seen by a doctor, but still refused to let me leave for some unknown reason. After 3.5 hours, I was finally given permission to go home, though literally nothing had changed. Later that night, I spoke to Dr. Perez who said she would tap 1/3 of the abdominal fluid and next day the radiologist would get an ultrasound needle aspirate of the suspect lesions which would be sent to the vet lab where I work. I reiterated to her how I wanted him to get an internal consult with the oncologist, too. I felt like we were on the same page and he was in good hands - until the next day.... Next day, Friday, I spoke with Dr. D'Aurora. She had taken a sample of his abdominal fluid and asked if was already analyzed elsewhere. His fluid analysis was actually done 3 days prior by his regular vet and the cytology report was right there in his records. Clearly, she hadn't even looked at it! This was very unsettling. As for the fluid tap? It was never done. She tried to excuse it by saying "if his protein is low..." but Dr. Perez looked at his protein levels on the phone with me and said it was safe to remove 1/3 of fluid. D'Aurora could not explain why it wasn't done; she just asked if I wanted them to do it now. I said, no, the whole point of the overnight drop-off was so he could be observed for hours after just in case he bottomed out! Finally, I asked her about oncology to which D'Aurora first tried to tell me something to the effect of "we don't do that", then kinda stalled and eventually informed me that the specialists do not work on Fridays. I was FURIOUS. Why did NOBODY tell me this fact the many times I said I specifically brought him there for this? All she could say to me was "It's unfortunate when someone else makes false promises" and I'm thinking: YOUR people said this was the fastest way and I literally told Dr. Perez, the triage tech, and front desk staff! What a complete waste of time and money. I came to pick up my cat, who they claimed was eating great and ready to leave. I was repeatedly put on hold and hung up on by the staff. After leaving, I called to ask for the itemized invoice, and it took me calling and asking THREE TIMES to finally get the right thing. And the girl was rude with me when I called back, as if I'm the jerk when she did not do it right the first two times. Once home, my cat was worse and would not eat anything despite the ER claiming he was eating great. His abdomen was still distended and painful from never getting the fluid tapped. I considered taking him to a second ER elsewhere except I could not afford to drop another couple thousand dollars. That night at the lab, his sample never came. It did not show up that Saturday night either. After many frantic calls to the ER, I found out why: it went to a different lab, despite them having repeatedly told me they would be sending it to the lab where I work. They also confirmed the sample wasn't sent out until Saturday, despite it being done Friday afternoon. If the sample had come to my lab when it was supposed to, I could have had results much sooner. $2000+ later, my cat was still full of fluid, in pain, and not eating. No oncologist, no diagnosis, no pain meds. His cytology results came back Sunday but it was too late. He was declining such that I was forced to have him euthanized. I know his ultimate fate was not likely to have changed but I still deeply regret taking him to the Columbia Pet ER and causing him such stress for absolutely nothing. I understand the pandemic re-opening is putting a lot of stress on vet hospitals, especially ERs but I cannot forgive the constant incompetence at every turn and the complete absence of communication between shifts and staff, especially when it loses precious time and risks my animal's life. PS: I e-mailed them my complaints directly and got nothing but a "sorry" and another copy of the invoice.

Service:5 Stars Pricing: 2 Stars…read more This past weekend, I had a very positive experience at VEG that was overshadowed by what appears to have been sheer greed. We brought our goldendoodle to VEG because he cut his paw; the laceration split one of the digits on his paw, with superficial flesh exposure. It wasn't the worst wound in the world, but bleeding persisted and it was deep enough that we needed to determine whether stitches may be needed. Dr. Forte and the technicians (I'm so sorry I did not get their names) were just amazing. And Sarah, who did our intake, was uncommonly kind and attentive. I had absolutely zero complaints with the staff. My sole complaint was with the pricing of a pain medication. I understand that emergency treatment is not inexpensive; it's just the nature of the beast. Still, when the Dr. said the total came to $400 for the exam, cleansing/bandaging of the wound and medication, I was a bit surprised so asked for a rough breakdown. The culprit, in my view, was a common, canine, pain medication, with which I was familiar. The cost was $93 for 14 pills. I asked the doctor if we could purchase it elsewhere and she said we could. When I filled the prescription at a grocery store pharmacy, I was shocked and then angered by what I learned. The prescription, for which VEG was charging $93, was $9.99 at my local Giant pharmacy. I could not believe (and still do not) a reasonable justification would exist for such an excessive medication markup. Surely, I thought, this chain hospital has access to preferred/wholesale pricing. Parasitic was the word that came to mind. I saw a business exploiting people already experiencing stress and vulnerability as the result of a beloved pet's sickness or injury. Although I was very pleased with the service we received, I am just very disappointed and troubled by this issue, to say the least. Certainly, this is not unheard of in the society in which we live. But VEG ownership/management, I feel you do a great disservice to the excellent employees who, clearly, work so hard to represent you in the best and highest light. With respect, do better...

My Human kept thanking Dr NcNabb because of how awesome she was. Also, the male nurse who was helping her (my Human did not get his name) was also cool. (Although we were both wildly exhausted in this photo, the smile/grin my Human has was genuine, and I was as at peace as I ever could be at a vet -- because the staff was so patient with my fretful Human, and I was receiving amazing care .) The staff at Dogs and Cats Emergency & Specialty were amazing from the moment we walked in. They were extremely thorough while showing such care and concern for Duke. They explained what was happening, were transparent about the cost, and gave an honest assessment of the prognosis for our baby. Dr. S explained our options and gave us time to process everything. She answered all our questions and reassured us that there was no right or wrong way to go. Ultimately, we made the heartbreaking decision to let Duke go and she supported it, agreeing it was the kindest choice given his age, prognosis, and his current state. When I asked her what she would do for her own fur baby given the circumstances, Dr. S was transparent and told us she would do the same. That gave us a small bit of comfort that we weren't rushing into it prematurely. Dr. S gave us referrals to a few vets who could come to our home to help us with Duke's final care. We chose Lap of Love Veterinary Hospice, who were equally wonderful during such a horrible time. We appreciate all of the staff at Dogs and Cats Emergency & Specialty, from the folks at the front desk to the nurses and doctors. There were small things that I appreciated... when they brought our baby to us, they put down a plush blanket so he could be comfortable and not laying directly on the floor. Also, right before we left, one of the nurses even came in to say goodbye to Duke and tell him he was a sweet boy. She loved on him and that small gesture will always stick with me. I thank everyone for showing such love and support during one of the most difficult times in my family's life. I would absolutely recommend Dogs and Cats Emergency & Specialty to anyone needing care for their fur baby.

This type of situation is unacceptable in any business, but especially one that operates as an emergency medical facility where people are vulnerable, anxious, and seeking help for animals they love. It is extremely troubling that my experience felt more like a financial upsell tactic than medical support. On 11/7/25, I called the hospital to schedule an appointment for my pet. I was told there was an $80 fee for a 2:00 PM appointment, and I agreed. The staff member was unable to take the deposit and stated she was not familiar with the payment process. She assured me the appointment was secured and said another team member would call me back shortly to collect the payment. No call was received. After waiting, I attempted to reach the hospital myself. I called ten times with no answer. On the 11th attempt, I finally reached someone who informed me that I did NOT have an appointment, and if I wanted the very same 2:00 PM appointment, the fee would now be $180. I was told there was nothing that could be done to honor the original price. When I requested to speak with a manager, no solution or accountability was offered. Because of this, I was unable to receive timely care at the price I was originally quoted and had to seek treatment elsewhere.

The only exception was the one assistant who got ruffled when she tried to take Pablo's temperature rectally and he didn't like it and took a light swat at her. The assistant got pissed and dramatically tossed the thermometer back into a drawer. They gave Pablo a sedative, a pain shot, and an antibiotic. The sedative doesn't make the pet unconscious but limp like a rag doll. What I didn't know vets do is after the treatment, is to give pets a "de-sedative" to roust them. Pablito is recovering quickly and will be fine. The clinic also tries to put pet owners at ease, proving comfortable chairs, courtesy snacks and coffee. The clinic is one big room, what VEG ER calls an open concept. It was busy when we there, but we were still checked in and seen quickly. The clinic is modern with an admittance form that you can fill out and send in before you even get there. Their invoices and doctors notes are also available instantly and electronically.

I regret not taking him to any other emergency animal hospital for his end of life purposes. I called the Georgetown location initially as I was in a state of panic (he was ten plus years old, I adopted him in December 2025 knowing he had a heart murmur and was also deaf. He was brought to DC by who saved him from a kill shelter and he was very loved) as he had simply collapsed on the dining room floor and passed away immediately - traumatizing to say the least. The woman who answered my call at the Georgetown location was helpful and she gave me the phone number to the closer location to me - H Street. Once we arrived, I called the phone number to let them know we were there as we needed assistance getting him inside (they were aware of this and instructed me to call upon arrival). I was outside of the door watching my phone call go unanswered as my mother, a retired vet tech, and brother-in-law waited at the car with my deceased boy. After a dozen rings, my call was answered and they informed me they would get a stretcher and meet us outside. They were prompt in getting him from the car without any further communication. I followed them into the building and they took him into a room and immediately left. I sat there with his body wrapped in a blanket on the table/stretcher until another person came in. I was handed a clipboard and told to fill out the paperwork and once complete, to ring the bell and they would come back in. There was NO introduction. No asking of his name or what had happened. No care whatsoever about who he was or how he passed. I, devastated and distraught, offered a bit of his story up and it was dismissed rather quickly. The paperwork was taken and I was told to go up front and pay. My dog was left there in a blanket on the table like a heap of garbage. Nobody, not one person, introduced themselves to us. Not a single person took the time to show any sympathy or interest in us or my dog. They never uncovered him to take a look, they never touched him, nothing. Not a single person took the time to explain anything or offer any kind of condolences. It was the most ingenuine, harsh, impersonal and downright disturbing experience I have ever been a part of. The hospital had doctors on the floor and no other animals were in sight. I am not saying that there weren't any present or that there weren't vets and/or vet techs tending to other patients - but I am saying that there was absolutely no reason whatsoever that my dog and I received little to no attention or interest. The entire thing from the moment we walked in to the minute we left was no more than 10 or so minutes. It was disgusting. Furthermore, in ALL of the times I have had to take my past dogs in for their end of life moments to various other emergency vets, I have always received, at the very least, an email or automated text offering condolences on the passing of my animals. All were always followed by a card or note of some sort. I chose the communal cremation, as I always have, and am extremely disappointed in the lack of follow up after trusting VEG with my boy at the end of his life - which was not much to expect given the horrible and disturbing experience I had when choosing VEG for my dogs end of life cremation and carry. This is not the place to go if you want someone to care. It was nothing more than a monetary gain for them and it was truly disheartening and extremely upsetting in every way. I will never recommend VEG to anyone - not for primary care nor end of life services and I can certainly guarantee that I will be in touch about my experience with the right people and organizations in an effort to prevent anyone else from having to say goodbye to their beloved pets the way I had to at VEG. I am unwell over the entire experience and I will be very vocal about it to the right people. I discourage anyone from choosing VEG.

I unfortunately had to take two pets to the ER on two separate occasions and the staff is compassionate and very very accommodating. If you have the need to go between South paws and veterinary emergency group I would pick the ladder. Still expensive, but it puts you at ease being with your pet during whatever procedure they have to have

I called this practice and they immediately connected me with a vet to talk through her symptoms. They suggested I bring her in just to be safe. When I arrived, I was checked in right away and even offered a drink or snack. A doctor quickly came out to make sure nothing was urgent, and after about a 20-30 minute wait we did a full exam. The team was so patient and kind--consulting with each other, keeping me with my dog the whole time, and making sure she was comfortable throughout. Thankfully it ended up being full anal glands and some irritation. They took care of it and gave me guidance on meds (which I already had on hand). Checkout was the biggest surprise: only $205, which feels incredibly reasonable for Northern Virginia. The clinic was clean, organized, and calm, and it was obvious the pets there were genuinely cared for (even the ones in cones having a rough day). For a stressful night, this place made it a really good experience.
