Great local spot to get high quality pet foods. Basically with pet stores, this is what I have found: your toys, dog beds, crates etc are probably going to be cheaper online. My dry dog food is sometimes cheaper online. But wet food is almost never cheaper online. Having had my pup for three years, I have figured out exactly where to shop for what, and whether you are a new pet owner or old pet owner you are likely figuring that out. SO all that to say, the people complaining about prices either don't understand certain items that are way better to buy online, ones that make more sense in store, or possibly are feeding their dog lesser quality food and so are used to rock bottom prices. I go here to get wet food for my dog, and occasionally get a toy or other treat. I have done extensive research about pet food, wanting to avoid many chicken products and anything not truly made in the USA, so when I shop for food I know exactly what I am looking for. Their prices for wet food are the same or better than most online outlets I have found for the brand I am currently using (Fromm). It's a no frills pet store that the benefit is selection, so much is here! The pet store in the village, Dexter's, is very specialized but they really have the most quality items, so if you have a bigger budget then their food is great (also a lot of Fromm's and Zignature, two top quality brands), as well as locally made treats. I would recommend this place for having a local source of the exact brand of food you are looking for, or to try out a can or two of something new! read more

I agree with all the one star reviews, and wish that there was a zero star review. I have tried over the years to buy my Maine Coon cats food there. They are rude, could care less, whether you buy anything or not, I have no idea how they have stayed in business. I prefer to drive 15 miles out of my way to get cat food, or order it online. I hope they go out of business. They seem to hate what they're doing, what a horrible atmosphere. And yes, the food I did buy was expired by about three or four years. Great. read more

I called before driving to this store to ask about a product, they said they have it, but he said he can't give me any info on it, so I just looked up the price on line for the Midwest ferret cages, every single store it's $100-140 same exact cage 140 bring the highest price you can find for this single unit Midwest cage! We drove 40 min to buy it and when we got there he told me the price is $270!!!!!' How do you hike up the price that high?! Are you kidding me???? No one should ever shop there and if you do, please please price check online, guaranteed the prices are higher! Oh and when I told why his cage is double the price, he said if you can get it for $140 you should, it's $140 that is the cost of the crate, there isn't a higher price anywhere at all! Look it up! I had the most unpleasant retail experience at Pet Country that I have had my entire life. Let me tell you about it and how the experience had a happy ending. Dear Pet Country (specifically the male owner): I lived in New York City for 16 years and NEVER encountered a shopkeeper as rude and unhappy as you. I got a new shelter dog who wouldn't eat and went to Pet Country and bought $130 of a wide variety of canned foods. When shelter pooch found two varieties of canned food that he liked (the $2.70 per can and $1.80 per can) I brought back the balance of cans to return. When I walked in the door at 8:00 am holding the bag to return you growled at me and when I placed them on the counter you snarled "what are those for?" I explained and you got more tense and unpleasant than anyone I have ever encountered in a retail setting. You begrudgingly took back half and then said I would have to return the balance another time. You then presented me with a return receipt (original transaction was cash) that required that I put down my phone number. I signed my name but didn't give you my phone (why on earth would I give my phone number to the most unpleasant person that I had ever meet?). You insisted that I give my phone number and when I refused you made me take back the merchandise I had brought for return and would not sell me the $140 of merchandise that I had collected to buy. And you Mr. Nasty Pet Country think you won the fight! Well... I came home and found Petco.com and am buying my dog's premium dog foods by the case and with tax and shipping are still 7-10% cheaper than your prices. And the really good dried liver treats that I use for training where $52 (21 oz) at your place and now I buy them at Amazon for $34 (with free shipping) for the (21 oz). So actually your unbearable rudeness drove me to online shopping and I must tell you how satisfied I am that I found it. So the $1,200 or so per year that I am spending on my dear dog is a good experience. Not soured by your horrible disposition. Good endings! We try to shop locally but never again at Pet Country. The owner is angry, mean, unhelpful and doesn't answer the phone. He did not honor Stella + Chewy's promise to accept a return. The good news that came out of this experience is that we found Lucas Pet Supply in Kingston NY. The owner is congenial, thoughtful, and knowledgable. We happily agreed to donate the Dinner Patties to use as samples or give to someone in need. We can still shop locally at a store where we're happy to see the owner spend money on our 60 lb. rescue. read more

I don't know what store most of these reviewers before me went to, but I've never had a problem here. Our preferred dog food, Canidae, is less expensive than in our more local store. And it's a big store, so lack of greeting is more likely due to that than rudeness of the employees. I will say that I've never had to ask for help, and can't comment on the situation there, but having just called them to get their hours, received a pleasant, helpful answer. I'm not passionate about this store, but have always found it clean, well-stocked and had pleasant help at the register. I go to Pet Country often and like the owner, his wife and son (I'm assuming that these who these people are). I have talked a lot to all of them and find them friendly, funny and interesting. I'm surprised by the negative reviews for this store - we buy our pet food here (Fromms) and find that their prices are in line with everywhere else and the staff has always been very friendly and helpful. In fact, last time I was there, I asked whether they had a particular flavor in stock and the person at the register grabbed a ladder, climbed to the top of the display, and carried down the last 28 pound bag of that flavor and even offered to carry it to my car for me. I went to Pet Country for puppy food. The staff was very helpful with making recommendations. They have high quality brands at reasonable prices. I later asked our vet about food and the top brand they suggested was one of the two or three Pet Country recommended. There is a large selection of toys, harnesses, dog beds and leashes. Lots of expired items on the shelves. The owner, if he is the owner, won't even make eye contact with you or at least pretend to take interest and what you are looking for. My dog was recently diagnosed with cancer and I have been desperately trying to find the right meal plan and supplements for him to be comfortable. When I asked the owner if he had any foods that were beneficial for digestion or pancreas and liver function, acted as if I was bothering him and told me that my veterinarian suggest what kind of food to use. I explained that my veterinarian asked me to work with my local pet store because normally they are very knowledgeable about the food that they carry. He mumbled something while all along never even looking up. He's just a miserable person, I feel sorry for any animals that he may have. I really wish someone would open a decent pet store on the side of the river and put these guys out of business. read more

For the longest time, this store seemed to never be open until today when the Open sign was seen. But after seeing some of their prices within the store on traditional pet-care things, maybe God was trying to tell me something. From dogs to cats, they've got the whole nine yards worth of brands. At inflated prices that are in no way shape-or-form anywhere close to being comparable to any other local place or national chain. I saw a water bowl for about $20, and a dog bed/mattress for about $50-60. As far as the employees, they are a small operation. The store is laid out in a clean manner. If you find them open, stop in to see for yourself, but have no intentions to buy due to the higher prices. I know I won't be making another appearance here anytime soon. read more

I had my brother pick up dog food for me here because I was running low and I usually order online or pick up through petco and now I know to continue with what I normally do and don't support this local business ever again. I had problems in the past with consumer service being poor and the prices not being reasonable. Not to the point though of having to speak about it. But this experience tops the cake. A few days past and I can tell my dogs appetite was decreasing dramatically now on day 5 she stops eating the food completely I'm thinking I'm going to have to call the vet and get her looked at. I was also working doubles not having the time to really investigate but I also needed her to eat so I made her up some rice and chicken and she ate that no problem and she had no signs of sickness or anything else of the matter. I go to take a look at the bag and the expiration date says February 2019! I immediately go to petco get her another new fresh not expired bag of food and she eats that down like nothing! I'm happy my dog stopped eating it she knew something wasn't right with it! Like I said I never had this problem because I have purchased my food at places that tend to cycle through their products quicker but this isn't acceptable I pay 65+ for a bag of dog food if you can't fulfill your end and make sure every product you have isn't expired and is safe for purchase then don't open a pet store in the middle of Rhinebeck! As to what others have said I'm for supporting local businesses but that's if the local business is actually giving something towards the community! Good: Large selection of goods including high-end and obscure brands not found at superstores like Petco and Petsmart. Bad: Slightly overpriced although not far out of line with other brick and mortar stores. Of course, shopping online will generally be a lot cheaper. I bought a large bag of cat food and en expensive brand of dog food ( case of cans and a medium size bag) spent $63...didn't open the dog food till late the next night..the bag was INFESTED with crawling and flying BUGS. I called , left a message with my concern..you'd think they'd call me right back..no reply...the staff isn't exactly friendly to begin with and after reading the reviews, I see this is a trend @ "Pet Country". Everyone has issues in business and stuff happens, NO response IS a response where I came from...recommend that ALL my dog rescue friends and pet owner friends ( and I know there are a lot of you) avoid this place ( right on Rt 9 in Rhinebeck) like the plague. They have a good selection and the store is clean. The prices are a little high. The owners are not particularly pet rescue friendly like all the other pet food stores in the area. I like it when a business supports non-profits and they help rescues find homes for homeless animals. They also have a bulletin board in a location that no one sees. People who have lost pets or need to place other similar announcements in a pet friendly area like to see an accessible bulletin board. read more

I boycotted this store for about eight years after the ridiculously poor customer service they offered. Unfriendly, unhelpful. I returned something once and the owner threw the item across the area behind the counter. His wife/partner minimized and excused his behavior. Out of pure convenience to my home I tried this store again a few times recently. I am giving them two stars as they have learned to be a bit more friendly. What they have not done is to learn to give accurate information. Today I asked it my pets preferred treats came in a larger size, the owner said "no, and I have every thing this company makes". The absolute WORST service I have ever experienced in my life. Rude to customers, snarky signs in the front of the store about items that have been returned and they DO NOT honor product guarantees even when the item says to bring it back to the store if damaged. The owner or manager was horribly nasty to us when we tried to return an item that broke in one day, and threatened us as well. I have mixed reviews. I happen to like Ira and used to like Kathy, the owners- who are the only "employees". I have been going there since they opened. I know one review said he called and someone "pleasant and helpful" gave him the hours- impossible- as they do not answer their phone! When I broke my knee they bent over backwards to help whoever went in there shopping for me. I don't shop online. I was "exclusive" with my purchases there but that changed over the last year or so. I arranged for Perfect Pets Rescue to let me meet my adoptee there - I thought it would be good for all: PPR would possibly eventually do an adoption event there (no, Pet Country is not interested), it would bring some advertisement to Pet Country which I know some new ppl did shop there.......... I spent a boatload of $ on my new man, Charlie- he had a great time! They DO allow dogs to shop which I like. I've not found the prices to be too outrageous but I don't go as often because Kathy is so unfriendly; it's a little uncomfortable. Also my friend went there to purchase a $50 gift certificate for me and was told by Kathy that they only do them at Christmas time. Whaaaat? it makes no sense! The store gets the $ now and if the gift receiver doesn't spend it they've not lost anything. I did ask Ira who said its true they only do them at Christmas time but had my friend said it was for me he would have done it. My friend no longer will shop there, she was so mad.......... especially at the way she said she was spoken to. It's sad to read how dissatisfied ppl are with this store. I like to support local stores and will continue to do so. My wish is that others could see the side of Ira that I see- always helpful, always pleasant. We all have a bad day. He has ordered in things I've asked about. I have never, in all the years I'm going there, seen Kathy on the floor helping- she stays behind the counter typically, but that is probably their arrangement. Patronizing local businesses is what I prefer doing as I have done for 3 yrs. at this store since moving to the area. While I like that they have a great selection and the store is clean, I am giving them one star because of their rudeness. The owner never says hello or thank you unless I say it first and he then sometimes responds. His son is beyond rude and doesn't speak at all. I am a small-built 68 yr. old lady and while I am in good health I ask myself every time I go there, "how hard would it be for them to offer customer service by offering to carry the large bag of dogfood to my car?". Several times I have seen the two men just stand there and start to talk to each other after I've paid while I struggle to lift the bag on and off the counter and into my basket and then into my trunk. Good thing they have baskets or I would never get the item to my car! Good customer service at smaller businesses encourages customers to continue patronizing them rather than the big chain stores.
