I buy my dog his special food from this shop as very few places stock it and they order it in specially for me. The lady who works here is not just an assistant but a dog owner herself. She keeps her tiny little dog and her big massive dog together behind the counter and many a day I've lingered on after purchasing just to give them a wee stroke. I've purchased a lot of stuff from this shop including food, toys and Toby's grand apartment (his kennel) Toby is a great big beast and so is his home, the man who works here gladly nearly put his back out helping me carry the swanky new dog house into my van - and all this was going on while the parrot they keep by the door was screeching and whistling at us! I definitely recommend this shop - much more personal and friendly than those big faceless pet stores.

I've been buying our dogs food here for the past year or so and have to say, have always had a warm welcome & any queries I've had have been answered by people who take a genuine interest and actually have pets themselves!!! I have previously fallen victim to the big faceless corporations (much to my hubbies horror) but this little petshop has everything you need to continue returning and its great building up a rapport with the owners... nothing is too much trouble, large items are even taken out to my car for me. Reminds me of my goldfish selecting when I was teeny tiny myself (haven't grown much since then), when I selected one male, and one female and named them Dixie and Dora (the Explorer stylee, though that was long before her time). The fact that we had no idea regarding the sex of each fish was completely irrelevant - I was convinced they were going to have little fishes. Which never happened. And they both died. Sniff. But...we weren't in the Pet Centre to purchase fish, or anything fish related (well, that's not strictly true, but I'm getting to that). In fact, we were there to buy our cat some food (ironic, I know), though not necessarily the fishy kind. Phew. Yep, a few treats and denta-something-or-others, and we were done in the snug Pet Centre. Yep, it's nearly as teeny tiny as those fish, and me at once stage, but it's crammed full of everything... Including fish.

Upstairs there are a few snakes, tropical spiders and lizards. Birds such as perroquets and budgerigars were also on view, alongside furry rodents of the guinea pig, rabbit and chipmunk fraternity. Greater curiosity value came from the chinchillas which are interesting creatures to see though they tend to be inactive and sleepy during the day. If disturbed they make a strange purring chirruping sound and are capable of jumping up a great height so, if you're interested, you'd need a very big cage were you to consider doing business with the proprietor who was helpful and willing to sell, for instance, the chipmunks for £50 instead of £70.

My interest was in fishy snacks for two very spoilt pooches who give us unconditional love, two words that require nowt more to be said. Just like the flip side of that coin, irreconcilable differences, but boy was I surprised at the vast array of the calorie, vitamin, fat, protein, trace element counted selection for pets and the science behind it. I was initially just looking at dried food for dogs, mostly bagged and in pellets from a few hundred grams to 20 kilos plus when I passed the freezer to see frozen rats and hamsters for hungry snakes, lizards and meerkats. So, for pooches there was reindeer, wild boar, salmon, trout, turkey, cod, herrings, chicken and vegetarian and these doggy proteins are supported by things like kale, ginger, carrots, peas, forest fruits and on and on the selections went, either for gut health, digestion, teeth cleaning, coat shining, stamina and skin, coat and breath enhancement. Nothing was sold based on it tasting good. Not only do they farm the forests and fish the oceans for food but they go to the most mountainous region on earth too, with gluten free doggy chews made with Himalayan yak milk. It's hard to imagine Tibetan, Nepalese and Bhutanese farmers having enough yak milk to export it for pet food (I wonder if the chews taste like yak butter tea served to humans; it has a salty, plain yogurt taste - and the yellow yak butter helps chapped lips). I left the yak milk snacks and ended up buying vacuum packed, dried, 100% cod skins from China. Earlier in the day I'd bought dried haddock doggy treats from the local food market. These haddock doggy snacks, which were made locally in the fishing village of Kilkeel (just 20 miles away) were 100% fish, including skin, bone etc. The haddock came in at £8 for 200 grams but for equal weight the Chinese cod skins from 6.000 miles came in at £3.50. The pooches were not discerning - a fishy snack is just a snack, period - once (quickly) swallowed with a lick they really just wanted to know when the next one will arrive and care not if it's a fish from Kilkeel or Guangdong so I suppose I'll cover for them.
