We were aiming for an outdoor…read moreFall wedding, and the property for Red Barn was absolutely beautiful from the accommodations, the scenery of the surrounding forest, to the water, the gardens, and of course, the barn itself. We reached out and scheduled a visit with the coordinator. The day of the visit we arrived, the coordinator had forgotten, but said we could walk around the site. It was no big deal, the day was kind of gray, but we could get a sense of what the property was, so we decided to go forward. We did have another meeting, and signed the contract for September 13th. A couple months later, Covid hit, and we were in limbo about the wedding and evolving government regulations. However, we kept informed of the changes and adapted as needed, they were flexible and we were comfortable moving forward together. So far, pretty good experience, you might be wondering why the low rating, but the turn happened a month leading up to the date. All of our vendors were booked and deposits all made. We had paid Red Barn ~$4500. The first issue was that the in-house catering was no longer available, but we weren't made aware of the fact. We frantically searched for another catering, and were fortunate enough to find Cheryl's on 12th. So, again, no big deal really, just momentary panic. Mon Sept 7th, however, issues started escalating. The huge Riverside fire was choking half the state, and with an outside venue, we were getting extremely concerned that this was becoming an impossibility. Thur Sept 10th, the venue was in level 3 evacuation, our house was in level 2. Family was in the process of arriving from out of state, or traveling from around Oregon. We reach out and they say that maybe we can reschedule, or just see how things turn out. Our vendors started calling. The catering would not travel to Oregon City, nor would the bartender, the florist, the baker, or the DJ. None of the vendors were willing to put their employees' health at risk to fulfill the business, and neither were we. So we changed venues to SE Portland. One indoors with heavy ventilation. We made it work, our vendors could still do business in a nice area, and our guests didn't spend a lot of money and time making it out to our wedding for nothing. We had heard nothing from Red Barn after the text mentioned above. Here's where things soured greatly: My husband reached out to Red Barn a few days after the wedding asking for a refund, and offered to pay ~$540 for their time of the meetings. There was a lot of back and forth. After months of negotiation, they said they would give back 50%, but with small payments over a period of time. That negotiation fell through, and Red Barn said they would only give back the deposit ($500). My husband is a realtor and at the time had a client in Tillamook. He spent over 40 hours working with the client, found them a house, got it under contract, and in the end, the clients backed out. He was entitled to his commission (around $5500), but he didn't want to put his clients in a bad position, understood that it is part of business, and moved on. He relayed this to Red Barn, and they stated they were much like realtors in that they do all this work in preparation for a wedding, so they are entitled to the money. Their communication was often condescending, talking about how lenient they were being with us, how generous they had been with their offers in the negotiation (i.e. "we don't generally offer this, but...") What they were particularly insistent upon, was that the wedding could've been held at their venue. That there was no reason for us to even cancel in the first place (but, as they stated numerous times, "it was your right to make a different decision"), despite the repeated response that literally no vendors were going to be there. We weren't going to put our guests, our vendors, or their employees in that situation. The air quality was at the most hazardous level, and still in evacuation. Over a year later, they responded with, "we even purchased a powerful air filter, the air in the barn was better than our own house." Knowledge we were never offered at any point. However, this is a barn. With wedding traffic, of guests, vendors, employees, no insulation, slim walls, it would be impossible. Our vendors would not be in attendance, and everyone would be subjected to some of the highest levels of air pollutants with its proximity to the fires. In difficult times, we are presented with people's true character. The venue is lovely, the coordinator was nice enough, and we never actually met the owners. The odds of another pandemic and wildfires happening to sabotage your wedding day are indeed nearly zero, but going through it ourselves, we discovered that the owners of Red Barn have one priority above all else, where our vendors' owners did not: Profit over people. This past Sunday, posting this, Festa Italiana held their annual event that had been halted a few years, but if not mistaken it had been here the year prior? Can't remember. It definitely wasn't anything to be compared to the events that were held at Pioneer Courthouse Square back in the old days before Covid hit... But given that it's been a few years since they've held the event and then a lot of the people who helped out before, catering, musicians, etc. weren't able to help or make it this year we must take that into consideration. It was an experiment so to say being here at the lodge to see how it works and of course after a trial the next year always becomes better and better as it goes on. Beautiful view of the waterfront but the docks do take up a lot of space in your photo if you're trying to get a water shot on the balcony. It would be nicer if there was more water to view rather than docks and boats. The place is very clean and has a very modern feel. The acoustics were terrible. The entire time we were there, I was shouting to speak and had to lean in each time to speak to anyone. This place is so spacious and little conversations accumulate into a big echoey mess. Pair that with event music, utensils clattering and you get a jumbled mess of sounds. The flooring is also just pure concrete so that didn't help. There was little in the form of sound dampening. The venue is two levels with restrooms being single room washrooms on the first floor. Though the view is nice from the second level, my personal opinion is that a single level is best for any venue so that guests (such as myself) don't feel torn from the event and have to choose between mingling between floors. We were looking for a venue that would be okay with us choosing the catering, and also definitely wanted BYOB to save on costs. Karen was extremely accommodating and excited from the very beginning! She was so easy to work with throughout the process and was super easy going and flexible. There were no hidden costs or unreasonable restrictions. Also having access to the venue on Friday to drop off all our stuff was a huge help! Our wedding was complicated, as we were blending Indian traditions with traditional wedding customs which involved a lot of planning and coordination, and everything went off without a hitch. When I arrived at the venue on the day of the wedding, everything looked more magical and perfect than we ever imagined. It was the best day of our lives and our guest could not stop commenting on how beautiful it was! The farm requires you to rent all your own tables, chairs, decor, etc - so be prepared to do some planning! We had a partial wedding planner - which was the best decision we made throughout the process - It would have been very stressful to make sure the wedding day went smoothly without some outside help. There is parking right across the street which makes ingress and egress super easy. Once inside the ballroom it's like a step back in time. That's probably due to my lack of familiarity with venues like this but I can tell you it's beautiful. Seating was arranged on both sides of the room with stairs leading to a balcony. Lighting was soft but bright enough to be able to see without straining. The only deficit worth mentioning was that the room was too warm. For pretty much everyone. I can definitely recommend your serious consideration of Adrianna Hill Grand Ballroom for any applicable events you are planning.

There's something about Corbett with its crazy wind corridor barreling down on the inhabitants at all times and acres of former farmland. Somehow, it makes the teens take crazy risks with their lives, which is probably the story of teens everywhere in the U.S. But I hear about JB's life as a teenager in Corbett and I'm given a jumble of Dazed and Confused-style antics involving drunk driving, class cutting, and nature walks, not always in that order. You can understand why my outsider's perspective on the small town of Corbett is a little skewed. So when JB's band had the opportunity to practice in the Columbia Grange Hall in Corbett, it was a bit of a revelation. Beyond providing the setting for countless truant excursions out on Rooster Rock, Corbett contains a simple wooden building just off the main highway where the local citizens organize. The grange once served as the physical space to educate people about family farms as well as lobby for more federal money for local farmers. These days, the Columbia Grange members still do a lot of work with food. They collect food items for some residents in the Sandy River area and pass out lunches to seniors once a week. They also use the space to hold craft fairs and flea markets. My friend's grandmother volunteers not just her time but her amazing stores of energy and commitment to her hometown. One sticky summer day, she unlocked the entrance and let her grandson's band loose on the small stage. The fledgling band, with JB on the left side with his guitar, looked pretty happy on the stage despite the lack of air flow. They ran through their set several times. As I chugged down one bottle of water after another, I surveyed the wooden planks along the floor, the ancient piano, and the steeple-shaped ceiling. Every structure appeared like an object time-traveled out of Corbett's history. It wasn't my past, which felt kind of odd. But I watched my boyfriend do what he loves on that dusty stage in the place where he went to high school, and it felt like that place could be part of my history, at some point.
