Graham the owner is a happy, friendly, and generous man who seems just as excited to take you on a culinary tour of SA as actually selling you the food! It's not really a sit down place (more of a grocery store and take-out though I hear they but they do a brie - a big SA bbq - on Saturday). This tiny little storefront with an enormous kitchen in a business park pumping out some awesome meat pies - chicken curry, cornish, pepper steak and others all hit the spot. They also sell a variety of hot sauces, marinades, canned jams, candies, and other unique groceries imported from South Africa. You can also get some great frozen meals like chicken or lamb curry, take away those meat pies I mentioned in FAMILY SIZE (which is basically the size of a ginormous apple pie), and MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE SA FOOD OF ALL - boervoers. This place is small... as in only 2 tables with 2 chairs surrounding each, which is wishful thinking because the table is actually sized for 1 adult, or, I guess, maybe 2 children. Basically, the dining ambiance is lacking, so I took my chicken pot pie to go eat in a more appropriate and spacious environment, the dealership where my car was getting serviced. This place is straight up meat pie heaven. Wow! I have had a few meat pies in random places, but nothing this tasty. At first I was thinking "Where the hell am I?! It's down this road?", then I thought, " Ooooo, look! Society Brewing! Nice." Well, it not next door to it, sad to say, but it's pretty close. Follow the signs. It's tiny, but clean and cozy inside. The girl that helped me was all smiles and very friendly and helpful. I had the Chicken and Mushroom pie. Flaky crust with nice sized chunks of chicken, well seasoned with black pepper and mushrooms. My god man, it was good. Totally could have eaten another, and should have. Took a box of lamingtons to go. I have not had one since I went to Australia, sixteen years ago. WTF?! I took them to a friend's house as a dessert. BIG hit! Everybody loved them, and I told them where to get them. Moist marble cake, lightly soaked in chocolate and then covered in thin coconut. The cake had enough chocolate to taste and to hold the coconut, but not so much that the cake was completely soggy. Fantastic. They have tons of goodies and a menu in addition to meat pies. Bet you have never tried SOUTH AFRICAN food before. Did you know that the guy that owns Monster Energy drinks is South African? He had Graham(the owner of Deli SA) cater a party at his house and on each of the 3 floors he wanted a different South African theme in terms of food. The owner of Lost skate park is South African too and he is also a fan of Graham's cuisine. Graham also gets visits from the South African consulate. Bobby Flay recently approached Graham to host a South African booth at an event he's putting on and once every 3 months Graham loads up his delivery van and makes a drive to Phoenix, Az to deliver his goodies to fans of Deli SA. People drive far and wide to search out Graham for his cultural cuisine. Sitting in the tiny one table dining setup I learned all this one beautiful sunny San Diego afternoon. Finding the business is a bit of a Cluster fu$$. It's not a restaurant facade but more of a business office. Industrial buildings all around. My tip is to look at address building numbers and follow em. The unassuming business is in a tucked away corner. Once inside you are immediately greeted by a counter full of flakey pies reminiscent of English pasties. South African descendants generally are split into Dutch or English and the flakey meat pies are very English. But the meat pies are also very Australian as well(The British also settled in a large portion of Australia, they sent mostly their riff raff there to banish em) so Graham gets visits by a lot of Australians feeling homesick for their food. I met the chef/owner of Enoteco Adriano(highly yelp rated italian restaurant in pacific beach who specializes in burrata) who popped in to dine on some meat pie. Chef Franco is a very Italian man but he spent some time in Australia and when he gets hit by food nostalgia he comes to Graham for his fix. The clients that walk into Deli South African are very international and friendly. A love of good food has all brought us here and I think that's a great bonding experience. Graham's food is amazing. The meat pies are unapologetically flakey and the fillings are perfectly flavorful. For a true cultural treat I recommend trying the "beef jerky." Ask to sample the biltong and droewors. My South African friend/former roommate recommended I try them when I texted him that I was dining in a South African restaurant. He actually follows the Restaurant on Facebook on the South Africa USA page and although he lives in Denver Colorado he was quite familiar with Deli SA's menu and offerings. An adorable blond family speaking Afrikaans came in and ordered 3 bags of the biltong and droewors to send off to their little one at summer camp. They also left with a large amount of food to stock up their pantry as well. They took away with them so frozen meat pies and sausages for the grill. The biltong is a traditional style jerky but seasoned with clove and different spices so it has a distinct taste and the droewors are a dried sausage jerky type treat that also have a distinct licorice type taste. Try and get a piece of droewors that aren't too fatty. They are all really yummy and apparently a great accompaniment to beer. Graham teams up with societe microbrew( located in same complex) sometimes and beer drinkers rave about the biltong and droewors. Koeksisters, a donut type treat and milk tart are traditional desserts there is also a special cake dipped in chocolate and rolled in coconut that I didn't get to try. Next time! Graham is a man passionate about his food. He and his wife work really hard to share their food with the world. Graham and his wife are there cooking and baking and preparing the food for you themselves. They have a team that helps them but everything has Graham's touch. Tucked away in the back of a light industrial park is a world-class kitchen serving up some of the tastiest bites you'll have wrapped in pastry and puffs. Deli SA has been here for a few years, and is starting to get the recognition it deserves. Their meat pies are outstanding, their sausages are amazing, and the owners are some of the nicest people you'll meet. We recently worked with them to set up a special tasting session outside their office/kitchen, and they were absolutely wonderful. Not only was the food delicious, they went out of their way to set up a tent and tables for us and give us a sampling of a variety of their wares. I have to admit that there's a tinge of curiosity that arises when you're trying a completely different ethnic food, especially one that's South African. Dear world, this is a winner in its own way and a method to show off your intercultural acceptance as you proudly wear a badge saying you like South African food. Show off the bling, yo. The lady at the counter was SO kind and welcoming. Not only did she help us figure out what would be a good item to try but when I told her that Deli SA was that day's review of the day, she was so ecstatic that she gave us free desserts (Milk Tart and Lamingtons--which were AMAZING). I can get used to this ;) Note: - The place has a sign indicating some kind of "catering" thing at the front. Ignore it, just come in. It'll look like a little store. Food: - Chicken Curry Pie ($6): Not a dinner portion but perfect for lunch. It's pretty much a pot pie with a filling of curry and chicken. The chicken is a little dry and the curry is a little dry but I'm assuming that's how it's supposed to be. It has this very distinct yellow curry flavor with a dry curry saltiness. It's not bad but I'm more used to not having everything be so dry. - Pepper Steak Pie ($6): Imagine a lot of steak packed in with a shin marinade, a little sauce, and stuffed in a pot pie. There's no filler, no heavy carbs, but it's you and your pie and meat. Definitely stronger on the salty side but it was also really flavorful with the pepper flavors. - Fish and Chips ($10); One fatty piece of fish with a handful of fries. Nothing special about it but the fish was pretty crispy on the outside and meaty on the inside. Yum. - Samoosas (Potato/Beef): Triangular and enticing. These bite-sized portions were great as a side item. Crunchy on the outside with a layer of a potato filling that complements the outer shell. The beef one was actually better and had a thicker and richer consistency that really made me want to buy more. - Lamingtons: We got these for free but they were pretty huge in size but AWESOME as a sweet coconutty dessert. The thick consistency of the cake mixed with the coconut and chocolate was very melodic and my friend and I both really enjoyed it. Definitely recommended. - Milk Tart: Got this for free too, but man the custard was so rich and smooth. The cake base was thin so you really could enjoy the custard. The cinnamon on top really just brought the whole tart together. Definitely enjoyable if you like any of these ingredients. Delicious--loved this one so much. Pros: - Rich flavors, decent pricing. If you like the pie kind of meals, this is a great option - The owner, cook, cashier really seem to like their job. I felt so cared for. Thanks for bringing out the water too in a huge pitcher. Cons: - Seating is outside under a makeshift tent. I guess it's hard to get an official area to dine, but it seemed a little janky. Plus with all the trash floating around, it was a little dirty feeling. Not a date-worthy spot. - A lot of their entrees seem to be on the saltier side. If you like that, great, if you're sensitive then you may find it a bit overwhelming. There's my warning. Litmus Test: - When you have a mob of South Africans chattering and enjoying themselves nearby, it probably means they like this place too. If natives eat here, must be worth it. Don't tell me how I know they are South African--I'm really not playing a race card... My party of three was glad to have taken a risk and eat here for lunch. F*ck the meat pies and custard tart, I like the desert thing-a-ma-jig that consists of moist cake dipped in chocolate and rolled in coconut! I can't remember what the cashier called them but they were SINFULLY delicious! Although the meat pies had chunks of meat and flavor with a perfect crispy crust (with a pastry top AND BOTTOM! YUM!) and the custard tart was cool/refreshing at a reasonable price ($10 for a 8-9" pie full), it's those chocolate balls that I dream of. Sweet, moist, and rich. I want to stuff my cheeks with them! One of the BEST deserts I ever had! I would swim in them if I could! We had been watching Vloggers that live in South Africa and they kept telling us that they had these drywors (jerky) or rusk(crispy bread?) or were having a braai (i think that is a bbq to us) with some boerewors (sausage that is in a long spiral?). Eventually my super carnivore husband caved and was like "where can we get this kind of food?" A quick search led us to Perky's. Their facebook page had a post where one of the people we were familiar with from youtube (Jeremy Loops) had just visited them that past week. So now we had to go. The place is in a business/industrial complex, not typical. Once you are inside, it is teeny and there are maybe two tables and 4 chairs? We didn't really look around, we were on a bit of a mission to find drywors. We didn't know the name of what we were looking for at that time, but a little looking around (it was in the back of the refrigerated case) and we saw it. Yelpers had suggested the savory pies, so we had to try them too. We got the pepper steak pie and drywors to go. Ask the pricing as it can add up. Once home, my husband dug into the pie. The pie was stuffed with meat. Had a good crust. It was absolutely fantastic. A small seeming pie made for a very satisfying meal. The jerky was spiced with cardamon and other yummy spices. First let me help if you are new here as I was. Go North on Industrial Park Drive off Clairmont Mesa BLVD. Go about a block and you will see the sign and arrow on your right. The place is toward the end of the road and towards the most eastern part of the building. Go in the front door. It is hard to tell this is where you go. Inside is a small area that has one little table. You sit outside under the EZ-Up shelters where there is napkins, utensils, mustard catchup and ice in buckets and cups. But go in the front first. Order there. The owner is one of the most friendly and helpful guys I have met. It is obvious he is passionate about what he serves. We sampled the dried jerky and sausage and it was very good. We ordered the Peri Peri chicken sandwich and it was very good. Moist. He said they soaked the chicken in the peri peri overnight. The bread was quite good. The vinegar fries were great too. We also had the sausage sandwich with the red pepper and onion sauce. Very good. I took some frozen food to go. A Beef and Mushroom pie and a Pepper steak pie. Cooked them the next day. THEY ARE AMAZING! I will be back. In fact, if you are driving within a mile of this place, make it a point to stop by and get some of this great food. When we drove up we were a bit confused about the location (is this right? It's supposed to be right here... wait, is that it?) and when we walked up to it we weren't entirely sure it was even a restaurant. In fact, if there wasn't already a couple eating at the one (visible) table they had, I may still have been unsure. The owner, Graham, comes out and first serves us our meat pies. We also order the dish of the day, the chicken curry and that takes a little longer so we sit and start on the pies. My daughter bites into the chicken curry pie and her eyes light up. I glance away from my husband for a second and when I look back his pepper steak pie is halfway gone! Wait! Let me try! Wow... that is good. The crust? So.... gooooood. The steak? Super peppery. Super delicious. We were supposed to share the pie, but all I was allowed was that one bite. My daughter was nice enough to let me try two bites of hers, but it also disappeared quickly. Giant chunks of moist chicken. Crust was perfect. My curry came out and the plate was piled high. This was fantastic. The chicken was moist and delicious. The curry was flavorful and hearty. There was no way I was going to be able to finish this. I look up from my food to see another meat pie in front of my husband. Chicken Mushroom. While I was in love with my curry, I jump into the Chicken Mushroom meat pie determined to get my share. I didn't have to worry. My husband was so full from his first pie that he couldn't finish the second. I happily finished it off for him. We all had some more of the curry plate and took the rest home. Not only was the food delicious, but Graham stayed out with us and showed us many of the other foods he had. He told stories of his place, of the foods in South Africa and of his recent vacation. The descriptions of the desserts his wife makes made my mouth water (even though my belly was stuffed). He gave us samples of his beef jerky (delish). And that delicious square looking thing with the coconut on it? We got to try that too. OMG! Marble cake soaked in chocolate and rolled in coconut. SOOOO GOOD! A fantastic experience all around. This place is a teeny mom & pop shop tucked in the complex of an industrial area off Clairemont Mesa Blvd. Teeny might be an overstatement. Theres only one table inside amongst a shelf of ethnic grocery items, so don't expect to dine in or anything. The owner and his wife were extremely hospitable, offering us samples of their homemade jerky and sausages. We came on a weekday, where only meat pies are offered, but apparently Saturday afternoons here is where the party's at. Goodies are bbq-ed and chairs and tables are set up out in the lot. They also have a much more extensive menu on the weekend, so I'll definitely be back to check this out. As for their meat pies, we had the curry chicken and the pepper steak. Both were phenomenal. The crust was flaky and buttery and the pies were packed with flavor. $6 for a small pie might sound a bit steep, but you'll be surprised how filling they are. So grateful for this discovery. Out in the Kearny Mesa area just a little east of Convoy if you go north from Clairemont Mesa boulevard on Industrial Park Driveway past the first parking lot, you will most likely see a little sign with Deli SA and a South African flag on it. The deli itself is in the eastern end of a rectangular building going west/east. The entrance and main counter is small with just a number of shelves of South African goods. Don't be fooled though, if you are here to stock up on frozen goods it's all in the back kitchen area. There's usually something on display right on the counter - some type of pasty or pie. Also, there's usually something being cooked up in the kitchen as a hot meal. On Saturdays there's usually something like a braai going on in the back area (northeast of the building) where there are tables and chairs set up. NICE GUY ALERT! So the guy who runs the place is this super friendly guy named Graham. We didn't meet Mary Louise as she wasn't around at the time we were there. In addition to serving us food - chicken curry and chicken pasty he took us on a tour of his kitchen. Turns out he also supplies all sorts of South African goods for stores in Southern California and more stores keep signing on - demand is high for his stuff unsurprisingly. He even makes trips to Arizona certain times of the year to make his food available to expatriates there. During the kitchen tour he gave us samples of beef jerky to try and told us he's hoping to open an actual restaurant one day soon - with live music as well. I can't wait till that day! Holy hell this place is GREAT! My co-workers probably hate me because I took them on this crazy mission trying to find this place from our office on Aero and Kearny Villa... It would have been easy if I knew how to get there properly (going west on Aero, right on Convoy, left on Clairemont and down would have been ideal and smarter than taking Kearny Villa, which was the "Google way" -- not to mention when you think you have arrived, you actually end up in this weird office-y parking lot and you are not quite sure if you are in the right place, and you then honestly feel kind of shady doing all this for meat pies... Maybe it was just us because I was making u-turns like a mo-fo and it was raining and we were cold and hungry. Man, it was a while ago but I can smell them as I write this. I'll tell you though, when we warily walked into their shop from our weary and long journey in the rain, we found ourselves in this warm and intimately small cozy quaint shop that has AMAZING MEAT PIES!!!! This place is pretty damn good and FILLING! It looks like it's primarily a catering business and supplier for other shops hence the location is extremely obscure and inside a group of business buildings. The quality of the food is A+. Everything tasted gourmet and fresh. The herbs and spices really really wake up my senses. I got a mushroom/chicken pot pie and it was a surprised how crispy the crust was and how warm the filling was because it was inside a small glass display box. Apparently the owner said it's heated so that explained things. In addition to the meat pie, the owner gave me a portion of their chicken curry with rice to sample and it was amazing!! His jerky and dehydrated sausage was super flavorful too. The prices are admittedly a bit high but I understand that he's putting out quality not crap. For the average person, I'd say his portion size would be pretty filling especially the meat pies. I like how he has frozen food that you can take home to prepare too like samosa's and sausage filled pastries. Very awesome stuff. I'll be back for the jerky! A well-deserved 5-star little gem in San Diego! This place seems to be very popular among South Africans in the area, and Yelp actually brought me here to try their foods. Went here early Saturday afternoon, and the place is quite small for a dining establishment (you'll know when you get there). However, I'm not really surprised just because I have read others' reviews here that pretty much says this is a place most suited for a takeout rather than dine-in type of restaurant. That aside, I ordered one steak&mushroom pie and one milk tart. They are both so good!! The meat pie look a bit small for a $6, but it fills you up as you dig out for the plethora of meats inside. The pastry is so flaky and crispy, not soggy which make the exterior crust look like a croissant. Moreover, I really love the milk tart. It has a right amount of sweetness for my tongue, and it tastes amazing! This is a must try for you dessert fan out there. It's simple, yet good type of dessert. In a quaint little shop set amongst a business complex exists a place you would least expect to find a kitchen delving out delicious little pies stuffed with delectable meat and veg; a place that knows how to do what it does very well and is worth getting to know that staff. Deli SA makes meat pies, and they are F*cking Awesome!!! My girlfriend and I split the Steak & Mushroom pie, the Chicken Curry pasty and a Lamington, all of which were delicious. The pie crust is crispy and flaky on the outside and soft on the inside. The filling is substantial with big chunks of meat and veg unlike many other pies here in San Diego... I'm talking specifically to you Bare Back Grill... Fix your pie, and maybe I'll be back! You're a disgrace to New Zealand!!! ...Where was I? Oh yeah... The owner was very friendly and took the time to show us the assortment of desserts, pre-made/packaged family dinners, sausages and jerky all made in house. This place is a little hole in the wall, but you know what? The best things come in small packages! Went here with a couple of friends and got to meet the really kind owner of the place. He is extremely genuine and talked to us about how the place came to be as well as a bit about South Africa. We also got to take a tour behind the scenes into the kitchen which was an awesome experience. I got to try some South African Beef Jerky which was unique and yummy. I also tried some chocolate from South Africa and some of the pie my friend purchased. Overall, a great experience. read more

When I work the weekend shift, I try to explore new places near the office to try to break up the regular routine. Today I happened to come across Deli SA and was intrigued by the great reviews and an opportunity to try food from a new culture. I couldn't have been more happy with my decision. Deli SA is a family owned and opperated business where all of the delicious dishes are created from scratch in house. I had never had a meat pie before, but the chicken curry meat pie was flakey, moist, and deliciously seasoned. When I was given a tour of the kitchen by the owner, I was given a amazing free sample of the marble cake rolled in chocolate and dipped in coconut flakes then shown all sorts of delicious South African delicacies one would be hard to find anywhere else. I am extremely pleased with what little I have had a chance to try and look forward to going back for more great South African dishes! read more

Hands down the best Melktert (Milk tart) anywhere! But everything here is absolutely delicious. Curries, pies, sausage rolls, biltong and divine fudge. I've been buying from them for over 10 years and the quality of their food has always been excellent. Lots of typical South African fare for a touch of the old country, but definitely great food for any one who enjoys home-cooked meals served with good old fashioned customer service. We normally drive down from Northern Orange County and buy our South African groceries from Deli SA. On our shopping list are: Marmite, Frisco, Mrs. Balls Chutney, Chocolates, Knorr products, soda's (Stoney Ginger beer and Granadela), spices, meat pies, droewors and biltong. It is worth the drive. The quality of goods are great and prices are reasonable. Also, on Saturdays we stop by for lunch. Our favorite item on Graham's lunch menu are his curries and boerewors roll. The chicken and lamb curries are delicious. A couple of years ago, Deli SA catered for us. We had a wonderful Christmas gathering and the food was amazing. Thank you Graham! read more

This place is one of those gems you can try to tell your friends about, but they probably won't believe you until you drag them here. The Cornish Pasty is one of the most delectable meat-filled things I have ever eaten. It could beat a 2am California burrito.... if this place was open at 2am, I would gladly pay my Uber driver to bring my drunk ass all the way up here from North Park for a post-drinking snack. Ok, I was on Yelp to find a motorcycle shop and it highlighted Perky's. Intrigued, I drove there. There is no sign, just a door in an industrial park. The place smelled heavenly. Cheerful people bustling about in the back ground. A few trays of hot pies on the counter. Near the doorway is an eclectic bunch of South African candy. The owner was a delight and gave me his two cents on how curry is made right. I ordered a chicken curry pie and the steak and pepper. The steak and pepper was in a puff pastry crust in a tin. Thoughtfully, the tin had holes in it to make the crust, well, crustier. The chicken curry pie was a hand held one in a wonderful crust. We ate these picnic style in the park. Please go get one for yourself. You will be glad you did! Delicious. read more
