Ever since Arya met Hot Pie in season 7 of Game of Thrones, I've been drooling for one of those crispy, meat-filled pastries. Imagine my elation, as I scrolled through lunch spots while my car was getting serviced at the shop, when this place popped up! First of all, this location is a hole in the wall in an industrial park. Imagine every scene in your typical action movie where sketchy gun runners or well-funded drug dealers are operating out of a warehouse by some docks or public storage. Now, replace those racks of filed down M4's, bricks of cocaine, and unmarked RPG's with hot pies and South African treats! It may make for a poor movie, but damn if it isn't twice as delicious. The super friendly owner, Graham, is still getting renovations and permits done before he can serve hot food (fish and chips, curry and rice, etc.). However, he's allowed to serve frozen and baked goods in the meantime! I arrived 10 minutes before closing (I know, my bad), but managed to score one of their last pies in the oven: a ground-beef curry pie. It was piping hot, fresh, and glistening with so much butter that my hand got greasy just holding the paper bag. I knew good things were in store in my near future. Needless to say, my reaction to the first bite was akin to the Arya's. It was utterly delicious, ESPECIALLY the crust. The curried meat itself was fantastic, but was nearly overshadowed by the flaky, crumbly, and buttery shell draped around it. Not wanting a big meal for lunch I decided to get myself a meat pastry at perkies. Everything is so good here and a gentleman that helps you at the front counter is always nice and friendly. I came on a late Friday afternoon to see what they had fresh and ready to go. They had a choice between the ground beef curry, pepper steak, curry chicken, and chicken and mushroom. I've tried them all and love every single one of them. My favorite is the chicken curry so that's what I decided on today. Donor said he would heat it up for me a little if I was going to eat it now. It took about 5 to 10 minutes and my pie came out hot and fresh. One bite into it and I knew this is what I came for. The chicken was nice and soft and the pie was filled with the curry flavor. Mission accomplished I got myself a full meal at an unbelievable price. The price here are decent portion if you are not too hungry. They have a little retail market that sells a lot of stuff African grocery items so it's always cool to check it out. To start off, the prorietor is a lovely gentleman that answered all my questions. I enjoy trying new flavors and styles of food from everywhere. In the past, I have only gotten the hot cornish pasties for lunch. This time, i headed back to the small but well stocked grocery area. 3 freezers of pies, curries, sausages, etc... and grocery shelves of sauces, chutneys, and a nice variety of canned goods and dried goods. I selected a nice variety of frozen hand pies, samosas, sausage rolls and boerewors sausages, along with some curry sauce, chutney, melon jam, tasty cookies. I tried the sausage roll with chutney and it was quite flavorful and filling. My family had the beef curry hand pie and the spinach feta hand pie. Thumbs up all around. There used to be a South African place near the former Ashley furniture pyramid in Miramar, but unfortunately back in the day I was only a kid and was less of an adventurous eater. As soon as I found out about Perky's my ears perked up (lol why am I like this). The store is located in a business park across the Daiso on Convoy, and is located next to a roller skate store. It's quite small and there isn't a dining space- it's more of a grab and go kind of place. I got the sausage roll, chicken pie, and a box of South African Nutticrust cookies from the small store inside. The owner was very sweet and gave us some information about South African cuisine. He was the one who recommended the Nuttikrust. I initially bought it for the odd name, but the cookies were delicious and reminded me of a Nature Valley oats and honey bar and belvita bar with more vanilla and Golden syrup. So delicious. The sausage roll was even better than I'd imagined- I lived in Amsterdam for a summer and would always be buying sausage rolls from the local market, so you could say I'm a connoisseur now. No overpowering spice or ketchup taste. The roll was perfect with a flaky crust. The pies are definitely more filling than you'd expect them to, and after I ate a part of the chicken one, I was SO FULL. Support your local mom and pop shops! read more

We hadn't yet learned that San Diego has the largest South African population in the U.S. Perky's is a tiny but super satisfying South African grocery store and meat pie shop. Awhile back a coworker and I took on the challenge to try a different cuisine each day for lunch. After a run of Argentinian, Szechuan, Japanese, and American BBQ, we did a quick search and stumbled upon Deli SA--South African! It took us a bit to find but finally stumbled upon Deli SA tucked in a rather industrial area. The place itself is quite small and has only 1 small table with 2 chairs if you choose to dine in. There's also a small storefront with imported South African products and in our short time there, several customers came in to stock up on goods. From the moment we walked in, we were warmly taken care of by Graham--the owner of Deli SA. He gave us a great overview of his place and even showed us the kitchen which turned out to be nearly 6 times the size of the storefront! We ended up getting a few assortment of meat pies--each delish although the curry pies ended up being my favorite. Graham also gave us several types of jerky to try out and even gave us free dessert--Melktert that was just made and brought out of the kitchen from his wife. In the end, my friend and I left with filled bellies and bags of South African candies to enjoy. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Deli SA and were excited to see them being featured on the Cooking Channel a few weeks later on Taste of Eden! Goes to show you that you shouldn't always base something off of your first impressions. Food here is definitely a 5+. I went with the mushroom and steak pie, to go. There are other options as well however this combination caught my eye. When I finally dug into it, I was a little surprised that I didn't find any vegetables?? OMG, Thank You Deli SA!! GREAT that they have plenty of parking. AWESOME that they have a huge kitchen that is 10x the size of the store itself. BUT WHY do they just have 1 little table inside?! We just sat on the grass outside to eat. I was informed that on Saturdays, they bring out tables/seatings and have more food selections out back. The steak was tender and well marinated. They are definitely stuffed the pie with a generous serving of steak! The pie itself was great too, there was no unnecessary carbs- it was just enough to hold the meat. The crust and steak was an awesome combo. -Sausage Roll $4: This was so much easier to eat! It looks like an apple pie from McDonalds. Once again, tender and well marinated meat held together by a flaky wrap! -Milk Tart: She was so excited that we were there that she gave us one on the house to try! This is basically a custard with a thin layer of cake as base. The creamy custard was then topped off with cinnamon. This dessert wasn't too sweet or rich so I enjoyed it. The Pie crust was perfect. crispy flaky on the top and yummy goodness on the inside. other flavors: mushroom steak, chicken, chicken curry. $12.00 Curry Chicken w/Rice: This was like no other curry i have tried. The ingredients and the heart put in to this dish is something like a home cooked family meal. The chicken was ever-so tasty and moist, the curry was most flavorful and was well balanced with the rice. It just felt like a home cooked meal. Inside the shop: Its small. they have 2 tables that can sit 2, and a 8 person table in back. The ambiance was very homely. It didnt really feel like a restaurant. Graham has a whole bunch of different types of South African items that range from chocolates to bread spreads to beans and other items. Graham gave us samples of his Sausage jerky and his Steak jerky, both of which were good. There is also uncooked pies and other goodies that you can buy and take home to cook at your convenience. I first came here for a UYE and the owner Mary Louise made us an array of delightful dishes to try. For starters we had sausage rolls -- the bet I've had in a very long time -- and different types of pastries like pasties and curry puffs. Our main meal consisted of chicken curry, shepherd's pie and this South African dish Bobotie which is a meatloaf type dish with raisins. I ended up buying some chicken and mushroom pies, pasties, curry chicken and curry beef pies. The kids loved them SO much I ended up getting more when I was down in San Diego again. Make sure you call and that they have your items available. If you call a few days ahead, Mary Louise will have the items available. That's what I'm doing the next time I plan to be down in San Diego. I want to make sure she has everything available for me to bring home. Just stopped by this past Friday with a friend. They had a busy day; the only things they had left in the warmer were a few chicken curry pies, steak and mushroom pies. They offered their chicken curry and fish plates as well. My friend and I both got the Steak and Mushroom pies. Oh. My. Goodness!! The steak reminded me of a meal my grandma used to make and the crispy, flaky pastry worked well with the mushrooms and the steak was finely sliced so it was perfectly tender. At one point we got to talking to the lady shopkeeper; she asked how old my friend's baby was, asked if it was ok to bring her some mashed potatoes as she'd just finished making some for her next batch of pies. Hidden little gem in the back of a business area. Confusing at first when you walk in. "Is this just a store?" "There's only one table for two, can we sit and eat or is it only to go?" "Where's the menu and prices?" "Is this a restaurant?" Some of the thoughts I had when I first arrived because it is a very small shop. They have a select menu everyday with 1-3 featured items. And then there's a glass case that has the little meat pies for you to choose from. They looked small to me, so I ordered a plate as well which I shouldn't have because one meat pie is more than filling which was a complete shocker to me. They are all delicious. Try the pepper steak meat pie! (They are roughly $7 each)That first bite and your initial reaction is priceless. Every thing tastes so fresh and you can feel the love that is out into this handmade food from this family. This is the place for authentic SA cuisine. A lot of people might think that this place only caters but they also serve lunch, but they don't have a printable lunch menu and just goes by word of mouth. Usually they'll have the basic lunch combo plates everyday in which there are tables around the back that you can sit down and enjoy: 1) Chicken curry with rice 2) Lamb curry with rice 3) Fish and Chips (salt and vinegar flavored fries) I tried all three and I was never disappointed, big portions and very satisfying. Also as I was eating, I stumbled upon a group of customers who ordered the 'bunny chow' which is a huge loaf of bread stuffed with lamb curry. OMG its big and looks delicious. Wow the meat pies are really flavorful and filling. I can only eat half for lunch. The filling has a good consistency so it's creamy but not wet and doesn't make the bottom of the pie soggy or give away. Yum, the curry chicken has anise, a flavor I don't normally equate with curry chicken, but it definitely works. If the beef pie is of the quality of the curry chicken pie then I'm going to love it. I purchased a hoop of frozen traditional sausage, some tomato and onion sauce and some curry chicken dinner also frozen. I can't wait to try those as well.
