We stopped in a few days ago and were the only people there an hour and a half before close. We had great food that was quick. They were out of broccoli for my skillet, but it was still good. Our server named Allyssa was super nice and sweet. We will continue to go back. The only thing I would suggest for this Perkins is interior update, but I know that's not up to them. Probably one of the worst places Ive eaten breakfast in years. Food was terrible. Cheap, below fast food quality, not prepared well and thrown on the plate. Pancakes were still runny inside, eggs almost uncooked, bacon all fat. Also, found a dead roach under our table. I was horrified how terrible this place was. When I checked out, the manager was ringing me up and asked how my food was. I told him it was terrible and we didnt eat anything. He just smiled and told me how much the total was. I then asked him why he asks how things are if he doesnt care what my response is? He then got a strange attitude and said "what do you want me to do about it?" I told him Id like to at least have a discount as I didnt eat my food. He then made a production out of finding my server to have her check to see if our food was eaten, which it wasnt. Now as a vegan for the 14 years, I have not done much at Perkins but my family was ending a family reunion weekend at one so yep here I go! I'm in town for work and went to Perkins to pick up some slices of pie to go. I got a caramel apple pie and a peanut butter silk pie. When I got to my hotel which is right next door, both slices of pie looked like they fell on the floor before they handed it to me. Horrible. This place is a shit hole don't ever go here. Party of four, we all had hamburgers. They were overcooked , dry and salty. Chips also overcooked and very salty. The service was great, staff very accommodating with seating and attentive to requests. Burgers didn't come with condiments and we ask for them. Seems that probably should routinely ask if needed for burgers and fries. Currently all salads do not contain any option for adding protein. You could and should be getting that as an option if you want to satisfy customers. Our 3rd visit, most disappointing. We won't be back unless hear menu and food improve. Giving them two stars only because the employees were friendly, but the coffee arrived with bonus material floating in it (ewwww...) and when the replacement cup came and I put creamer in it, the creamer didn't dissolve as if it were old. As far as Perkins goes, this one is pretty all right. Conveniently located right off of I-80 in West Des Moines, Perkins is easy to find and a nice option when you want a no frills, hearty meal. The space itself was clean and the staff were friendly and attentive. We sat at a booth and browsed the large menu full of breakfast favorites, hefty burgers and sandwiches, and even a few healthy options. Ultimately, I went with the chicken salad sandwich served on a croissant with a side of fries. It was a bit sloppy, and didn't look like the picture of it on the menu, but hey, it's Perkins. My expectations weren't very high to begin with. Stop by if you're in the mood for a decent sit down meal but you're in a hurry so you don't have the time to find any place better. read more

Great customer service! I appreciate that. And, as a restaurant manager myself, I can say, that the manager was fantastic, friendly, and accommodating. The bathrooms were terrible, there were cobwebs in the window by the table, and the sausage was extremely hard.

The service was polite but took forever. We were ready to walk out before we were even greeted at the table. The food took forever and was less than tasty, and the lack of knowledge of ingredients (we have one kiddo with severe allergies) was alarming. The server was new and she did say she would ask, but you could see she was lost, although very nice. Overall we ate less than half of our food, even the two hungry kiddos, and the chicken breast and avocado we ordered for the allergy kiddo was the best thing on the table. I've been to this place plenty of times after the bar, it never disappoints. I've also stopped by to get breakfast plenty of times because their pancakes are super good. I have been to this restaurant a few times when visiting from out of town, and have had positive experiences each time. The visit this week was no exception. We arrived later in the evening when the restaurant was slow. It looked a bit deserted of staff at first, but we were seated within a few minutes. Our hostess and server were smiley and friendly. I was in the mood for something light and ordered chicken and mushrooms on rice pilaf with asparagus. I also ordered a cup of potato soup. My friend ordered a skillet, which I believe was The Everything skillet. I expected my soup to arrive as an entrée prior to the main course, but all of the food arrived at the same time. I did not complain or question this to the server, but I was disappointed that main meal sat aside getting cold while I ate my soup. Next time I will explicitly state to the server that I'd like my soup first. The loaded baked potato soup was delicious. After my soup, I started on my main course. The chicken was juicy and delicious, and still warm. The rice and mushrooms were excellent, and the mushrooms really complimented the asparagus. The asparagus was overdone and soft, but I'm not hard to please in that regard. I did have one thick piece of asparagus I wouldn't eat because it was just too woody. It looks impressive, but large, thick asparagus does not belong on a dinner plate. My friend enjoyed his skillet and couldn't quite finish it all. It had a base of tater tots, which I don't know if he asked for or if they were out of the seasoned potatoes the menu says it should have. The bill was very reasonable, especially after the server did not charge us for our drinks. Neither of us was thirsty enough to warrant a refill, though there was nothing wrong with the drinks we were served. Not being charged for drinks we barely touched was very refreshing. Staff is friendly although the waitress is wearing gloves she is not changing them between customers, which means whatever she's touching she's spreading germs around from table to table. Staff masks are below the nose (worn incorrectly). They must have forgotten their nose and lungs are connected. There are plastic dividers with each booth. I've been to a lot of restaurants in my day and since these personal experiences are a part of my daily life, I feel compelled to write a review for Perkins because of the excellent service we were given last weekend. I feel like waitstaff like Jonathan at Perkins are underappreciated, and it is truly disappointing, because this one folks, is clearly one of the best servers I've experienced here in Des Moines. In fact, this is the first time I've written a review on this site or reviewed a restaurant online as I usually just discuss my thoughts with friends and family. We all desire great service, which should be enthusiastic and welcoming. When my husband and I came into the restaurant, we were seated very quickly and within a minute or two, Jonathan discussed the new promotional drinks at Perkins (via the freestyle machine) and we fell in love with the new Sprite Lemonade!!! Now, my husband and I dine out 5 days a week, so we pretty much already decided what we were going to order when we arrived, but the level of service and enthusiasm that came from our waiter and front staff was remarkable. Smiles were present, table was maintained, dishes were prebussed and our needs were met quickly and without flaw. I'm thinking this server could probably work at a more upscale restaurant and still work his magic--well, he won us over nevertheless, but so did the front end manager, Alyssia (not sure if I spelled that correctly). We wanted to order some pie and cooks to go and she was very happy to help. So, I know it's Perkins, but I implore you to visit the WSDM restaurant and ask for Jonathan!!! He will make you laugh and he will be efficient at the same time. The flow of the experience was very quick but consistent and involved the proper steps of service and we were both impressed for quick serve establishments like this are typically not known for quality or such personalized interactions. Whoever manages this restaurant I hope that you read this. I hope that you are responsible for training these two individuals--if so, cheers and thank you! They both are focused on guest service and our experience there was just delightful. Then it was all down hill..2 parties seated before us recieved their food promptly however we waited more then 30 minutes. A server sat down with another party saying how she didn't want to be there. The 2 ladies at the front were talking while a gentleman waited to be seated . After our food we sat another 30 minutes waiting for our check to come. Our company was moving to Des Moines, and this Perkins is right next door to the Marriott we stayed in. My colleagues must have enjoyed their eggs and hash extra extra style because they moved here. For the east-coasters: it's similar to a Denny's. Good, not great. Better quality than Bickford's. And jaw-droppingly good milkshakes. I won a chew toy stuffed animal for my doggy from the claw machine! Your meal is free if the waitress doesn't offer you some pie. If that doesn't scream "Good morning!" than I don't know what does. Yesly tried to sit us upfront but we asked to be seated in the back where no one else was located. We ordered our food and Yesly proceeded to seat 6 elderly people with no masks directly across the aisle from us. At under 4 feet away with one coughing severely enough that she kept telling the other group members that she didn't have COVID. Since we did not want to die we quit coming back there.
