While I am no longer a fan of these HIIT group class concepts with a dedicated WOD targeting select…read moremuscle groups, Revel can serve to switch things up or keeps things fun especially with the high-energy music played within the low-lit studio. Admittedly, it's a vibe. However, these concepts have you starting on the tread and switching off to the bench anywhere from 2-3 times. I feel like you do not get the ultimate benefit of either. The weight segment is also super ineffective, incorporating "compound" moves for basically everything with upwards of 5-7 different exercises for a max of MAYBE 2 sets. I get why people love this concept because it's hard to stay motivated with the same boring workout. Plus, these workouts will undoubtedly have you feeling sore, this feedback being what people thrive off of, because sore muscles=growth, right? WRONG, as you absolutely SHOULD NOT feel sore after every single workout. In terms of progress, you will quickly flat line with the lack of consistency due to all the randomness. However, people have different goals and exercise is better than none, I mean, if you can afford it!

I am in LOVE with this studio! It's conveniently located at the MARA in Mission Bay/Pacific Beach…read moreright off the 5 FWY and Grand. There is plenty of retail parking on the first level of the parking garage as well as ample street parking. The studio is clean and has bathrooms, showers, high-end personal care products (lotions, soaps, feminine care products) and offers free towels to use during the workout. The studio is spacious and has treadmills + benches with weights and bands in each space plus extra weights along the wall you can grab for heavier lifting. Another thing I really love about the treads is the ability to do sled pulls and parachute runs...haven't found another studio in SD that has them! The trainers are motivating, the music playlists are curated to really pump you up and the workouts are 50 min - it's effective, efficient and you get a total full body workout and a balance of strength training and cardio w/ the option to double up on weights. I took advantage of the special they had for March for $196/month for unlimited classes (normally $300/month). I have been averaging going 3-4x/week so the value is there and this promotion was a really good deal! Can't wait for my next class!

I've tried all the new circuit classes from Revel Fit, Renegade, OTF, F45, and I guarantee that no one will program or kick your a$$ like Bryan at Versatile Fitness! This is a no-frills, old boxing gym vibe (think OG Rocky) where you come to WORK! Bryan's programming, exercise acumen, and super sets will challenge you, but also be some of the most effective and productive workouts. He has almost every piece of equipment I've seen in a gym from rowers, ropes, barbells, curl bars, pulley systems, sleds, water weights, benches, kettlebells, free weights, Terra core, TRX, bands, discs, and the list goes on. I have attended about 10 classes and I have yet to repeat a workout. It's insane the quality of training and programming you would get through this gym for the price. Anywhere else, it would cost thousands for this level of programming, so anyone who attends these classes is getting a steal of a deal for this type of workout! Classes are 45min, with several stations per class. Each day has a target focus such as pull, push, leg, abs, and/or cardio, depending on the day. The target is there, but you are always getting a decent total body workout. Each station has 2-3 exercises that you do 2 sets per station. You have around 3 people per station, and then you rotate. Bryan goes around to demo each exercise as you move stations, and also has the workouts written on a whiteboard at the front of the room. Bryan will also provide quick corrections, as needed. Please note, in large group class settings, rarely will get you get alot of correction or instruction. It's not feasible to have that much personalized focus in these types of classes. Each class starts with a short warm-up, and a quick cooldown at the end. I have only taken class with Bryan, as he is the staple of this gym. He also has an extensive background with over 20yr of experience and he also offers some nutrition and personalized coaching programs for fat shredding and other fitness goals. This gym is a hidden gem and morning classes are usually full. I am literally perplexed how the afternoon classes are not exploding with members because I have yet to see anyone have the stellar exercise programming and versatility that Versatile Fitness provides. I've seen so many different trainers and attended many gyms, and Bryan's programming is the most innovative and BRUTAL (in the best way), that I've experienced. If you're looking for a serious SWEAT, a great community, and incredible workouts, VF is the spot!

I love her themed classes and she's amazing at giving corrections & cueing during class. And of course I also have to give props to Paige, who I actually learned lagree from at another studio. She helped me build my technique brick by brick and I attribute any compliments I get regarding my form to her excellent teaching. I love coming here and introducing my friends to lagree. Carol made booking incredibly easy, handled all the logistics, and set us up perfectly for our visit. The class itself was everything I hoped it would be and more. It was the very first Lagree class for my mom, sister, and her boyfriend, but Carol coached in a way that made them feel confident and successful, while still delivering a challenging and effective workout for me. Her energy, encouragement, and music were perfect throughout, fast tempo, upbeat, and exactly the kind of playlist that keeps you motivated. This was also my first time on the MegaPro machines and they did not disappoint. The workout was so good that my wife and I actually came back the next day for a regular class and it was just as fantastic. If I lived closer, this would absolutely be my home studio. Carol and Lagree Lounge are 10 out of 10. Highly recommend for both beginners and experienced Lagree lovers.

From my very first sessions, the coaches learned my name, my strengths, and my goals and that personal attention has never faded. The atmosphere is incredibly welcoming. I've never once felt intimidated or like an outsider, which is rare in a group fitness setting. There are tons of regulars here (a testament to how good it is), but they embrace newcomers with open arms. Even partner workouts are stress-free because the coaches thoughtfully pair you up based on size and capability so no awkward moments or feeling left out. The programming is strength-focused, not just endless reps or HIIT burnout. Every workout challenges you to grow with proper form and progressive weight. Coaches don't just stand back or sit on their phones, they are constantly walking around, giving constructive feedback to keep you safe and improving without ever making you feel judged. The gym itself is solid: clean, open concept, brand-new equipment. The music keeps things fun too - each trainer has their own personality and favorite playlists - one morning might be punk/rock, the next hip-hop, and another high-energy house mix to fuel a Friday which makes classes fresh and motivating. I was skeptical about the 3-week programming format at first because I hate routine and predictability, but I actually love it and it wasn't even a learn to love it experience. Having back to back weeks of the same program is like having a personal trainer because you can track your weights and really see progress more easily. (And if you're not feeling a particular workout, it's easy to swap/avoid that day hehehe). Booking is simple, even same-day, and rarely you'll see a waitlists or stress, plus the cancellation policy is super reasonable. What really sets Locomotion apart is how much the trainers care. James, the owner, checks in regularly with personal texts to make sure I'm getting the most out of my membership. When I had back pain after a vacation, he offered a free 1:1 consult to help me safely get back into training. He even worked with me when I had an unexpected billing issue with my old gym - something he absolutely didn't have to do, but did because he genuinely cares about his members. If you've been looking for a gym that combines the energy / discipline of group fitness with the attention of personal training and a community that will make you feel right at home - Locomotion is it. I can't recommend it enough.

i love working out. always have…read more but finding the right place...that's different. it's about energy. chemistry. whether you belong there or you're just another membership fee. most gyms feel transactional. like you're paying for access to equipment and nothing more. not this one. locomotion athletics gets it. gets me. in ways i didn't even know i needed to be gotten. listen. i used to be the person who smiled politely when coaches would say things like "you'll be able to do this" or "trust the process" and i'd nod along thinking...sure, and maybe i'll sprout wings while i'm at it. i was wrong. they were right. about everything. i'm doing things now i never imagined: lifting weights that used to seem impossible. pulling myself up from bars i could barely hang from. the coaches here...they see something in you before you see it in yourself. and then they wait. patiently. while you catch up to their vision. am i still coming to terms with the fact that they were right all along? absolutely. it's humbling in the most beautiful way. the programming here isn't just smart. it's intuitive. like someone crawled inside your body and figured out exactly what it needed to wake up. every workout feels purposeful. intentional. like a conversation between you and your potential. and the community... the community! this isn't some sterile fitness factory. this is a place where people show up as themselves. where celebrations happen for first pull-ups, personal records, and simply showing up on days when showing up feels impossible. the coaches don't just correct your form. they see you. really SEE you. they know when to push and when to hold space. when to celebrate and when to simply nod with quiet understanding. i'm stronger than i've ever been in my life. EVER. which feels poetic since i have a book coming out that's probably going to ruffle some feathers. (nothing wrong with a little self-promotion, right? "i wish i was worse" coming nov 9!) there's something deeply satisfying about knowing that when the inevitable fights come from what i've written about people, i'll be ready. the strength i've built here isn't just physical. it's the kind that holds you steady when the world decides to have opinions about your truth. this place doesn't just build bodies. it builds the kind of person who can handle whatever comes next.

But with the warm welcome from Coach Matty, I felt empowered to give it a try. The website does not do a great job of explaining the format, so here's what I experienced. The workout is split into three parts. Two strength based areas and one cardio tread. In the strength area, we engaged in things like deadlifts, curls, pull ups, etc. On the tread, we did a variety of intervaled runs with the section half being an option to either Tabata run or use the kettle bell to go between strength and floor core exercises. The coach cues each section and prompts you when to do what. Time flew by as you're constantly moving quickly from one exercise to another. I had a lot of fun and it was a really solid exercise. I left feeling stronger and sweatier! They offer first 3 classes free so you can give it a try!

This gym offers a wide variety of bootcamp like classes with fantastic energy and some truly talented coaches. While there are a few who are overly egotistical and could use a come back to earth reality check and a touch more humility, the majority of the coaching staff is excellent. Two standouts are Gabrielle Y. and Christian Q., who make working out an absolute pleasure. Gabrielle's welcoming demeanor and contagious positivity create a great atmosphere, and Christian's coaching style is equally motivating and supportive. The classes themselves are high-energy, challenging, and adaptable to different fitness levels. What I love most is that each coach brings their unique style and energy to the table. Once you find the coach who resonate with you, it's easy to stick with them and stay consistent. The variety keeps things interesting, and you'll never get bored while working toward your fitness goals. One of the challenges, however, is parking. Since Lazy Acres put up signs claiming what feels like half the lot, finding a spot can be a headache. I've learned not to arrive too early because spots typically free up only once the previous class ends. While it can be frustrating to circle the lot, a little patience and timing go a long way. It's something to keep in mind when planning your visits. The gym itself could benefit from more regular cleaning and maintenance. A deep cleaning is definitely overdue, as dust, hair, and even cobwebs can be seen in corners. Some benches are rusty and could use replacing. While these issues don't take away from the quality of the workouts, they do detract from the overall experience. Many other gyms in the area have weekly professional cleaning services, which could be a great addition here to help maintain a fresher, more polished environment. Despite these minor drawbacks, Renegade remains a fantastic place to work out. The membership is reasonably priced, although ClassPass is still more affordable and offers lower price penalties for late cancellations. Overall, the quality of the classes and the dedication of standout coaches like Gabrielle and Christian make this gym worth checking out. If you're looking for a challenging yet welcoming environment to achieve your fitness goals, Renegade is a solid choice--just plan ahead for parking and connect with the coaches whose energy aligns with yours!

On the day that we scheduled to come the sign in tablet was not finding our reservation. There was some confusion with the check-in as the tablet didn't recognize our name. Halfway through class we got pulled aside to sign a waiver at the front (just me). We also explained to them that we were contacted by someone and offered a free class. The class schedule is like a rotation. You get to hit the bags and move on to a bunch of core exercises. At the end of our class we had to "sign out". Which meant we had to talk to a rep at the front. I think they use that opportunity to sell us classes. It was kind of awkward because we were dead tired and I felt kind of put on the spot. I declined and the following 2 weeks after I received several voicemails of them wanting to offer me another free class. I would give this place a 3.5 round it up to a 4 because the instructor and employees were kind to us even though there was a miscommunication.
