Winterfest is one of my favorite Tulsa holiday traditions. Every year, there's an ice-skating rink…read moreusually outside BOK center on 3rd Street (last year it was inside) and it's a wonderful family-friendly activity. It's pretty affordable too if you're an Arvest customer (tickets are $6 instead of $12) or if you go on Mondays and Wednesdays. If you bring canned food for food drive Monday, tickets are only $6 and if you donate any new or gently used warm items (coats, gloves, blankets, hats etc.) on Warmth Wednesdays, you get half off tickets too. This is its 15th year, and it keeps getting better and better. I love taking my nieces and nephew and enjoying skating under the downtown lights. We always bundle up and enjoy hot cocoa when we get cold. We also love taking pictures by the huge Christmas tree. This year, there are fun events like breakfast and brunch with Santa. There is also an addition of holiday shops on certain days which is a great idea since not everyone actually skates. There are also carriage rides available. Sometimes there are private events so make sure to check the calendar before heading down there to make sure the rink is open to the public.

Thank you to the girl who let me go down the slide once after they closed. I was impressed with the rink. The refrigeration was perfect. Opened in 2008, this park is located in the deco district in downtown, between Boston & Main. It's…read moregreat to have some greenery amidst buildings, but for a long time, this space has been severely underutilized and neglected besides some annual festivals like Elote's 5 de Mayo. In 2018, the nonprofit Urban Core Art Project in partnership with OU's Urban Design Studio brought large, interactive, and temporary art installations to the park, highlighting the need for intervention. They also made recommendations to improve the park. One of those recommendations was the "Be the One" 918 sculpture in collaboration with TU's school of art. Big silver numerals 9 and 8 have a space in the middle for visitors to insert themselves as "the one". I have seen more people taking pictures, so I like this addition. None of the other recommendations have been implemented, it would be great to ask the city to revisit them. It's been great to see it leveraged in a more constant basis, like for 918 Day and the weekly downtown farmer's market on Wednesdays. I hope programming continues and it helps bring people to this part of town. I certainly enjoy it. Just wish there were more shaded areas.

the local park has amazing features for people of all ages. there are multiple stone picnic tables…read moreat the park, a feature i was especially grateful for yesterday when i'd only brought a bath towel to use for picnic seating. though i'd have been content with the picnic table towel for seating, the table was a welcome accommodation, both for allowing me to stay off the grass, and keeping me from dirtying the towel. for the picnic, i'd brought a couple slices of watermelon my mom bought at the store, to celebrate the spring transitional weather. then, after eating the watermelon slices, i'd used chalk in watermelon colors to promote the yelp review, and express an openness in meeting up with parkgoers or review readers to hang out at the park, a place where i've met multiple kind people, both people i'd met previously and people i met for the first time at the park. and lastly, after writing in chalk on the picnic table, i'd also wrote a sort of fragmented poem in chalk on the basketball court, of which the sight brung to mind the association i've got between the halfcourt basketball area and the double rimmed goal on it. that is one among multiple appeals to me from the park.

The kids absolutely love the playground area. It looks like it's pretty new and it is kept up. They really enjoy coming here. There is a small playground for younger kids and a bigger one for older kids. It has a spongy waking surface made of recycled rubber, so it soften off possible falls. Parking is only along the curb, usually best on 29th street. There are trash cans and a dog litter dispenser.

The playground area is small, with only a slide and monkey bars. There's also what looks like a water playground area but I've never actually seen it working. There's a basketball court, some picnic tables and restrooms. The best thing about this park though are the tennis courts. There are 4 public courts and there are lights you can turn on outside the fence so you don't have to worry about it getting dark and not being able to see. Another cool thing is that the Hillcrest helicopter pad is within sight so it's neat to see it take off and land. One precautionary note though is to not sit on the wooden benches inside the courts. They're kind of old and it's easy to get splinters if you're not wearing jeans. Don't ask how I know this...

i visited the racing pavillion today to watch the kentucky derby horse race, which i've gone to the…read morefair meadows pavillion to watch once before, though not since high school. although i'd planned to place a modest bet on the main event, the bet teller informed me when i'd got to the front of the teller counter window that cash payment is required to place a bet, and the atm on location had run out of cash. nonetheless, i'd heard from my mom that she may place a bet on a horse she had mentioned to me earlier in the day, and i'd seen some guys i'd known from high school with bets, so still had some interest in watching the race, which i'd likely have had even without knowing anyone who had money on it. further, the venue had a concession cart in the room with reserved table, in which teller counter and concession access was still available to the non-reserving public. from the concession, i got a pepsi soda-pop and twix candy, the former of which served as a delicious beverage to sip while standing in anticipation of the main event, as though the venue had a few and far between seats available in the non-reserved section, every table i'd seen was occupied by the time i'd got to the venue about 45 minutes before the main event race. nonetheless, i was welcomed by the guys i'd known from high school to stand at a table, and had a front row projection screen viewing experience of the race, during which the crowd was enthusiastic and got nearly as loud as i've seen the crowd get at live sporting events.
