Going to add to the string of 5 STAR reviews. The transmission in my 2009 Acura RL was not shifting properly. Took it to one transmission shop they said the transmission was shot and needed to be replaced/rebuilt. We're talking serious money here - THOUSANDS of dollars. So looking for a second opinion, I took the car to Perform Transmission. Mr. Do was nice enough to take my car the same day and let me know what he would recommend. Later that same day, he found a broken solenoid that controls transmission shifting, and he could fix (~$250) it vs buying a replacement/new solenoid (~$700.). picked up the car the next morning - it's running flawlessly. Total cost was only a couple of hundred dollars. What a difference from the Thousands I was quoted earlier! Mr. Do is truly the "transmission whisperer". I call him the "magic man". My whole family has been going to Dong since the later 1990s or early 2000s. Hes straight to the point and find solutions to your car problems QUICK! Plus his prices are extremely affordable and will not rip you off. When I was a kid, he use to show me all the damages he would fix on my car or my parents car just so I could learn a think or two about cars and maintenance. Fair and fast.. probably the best deal in town. Called multiple shops for a transmission repair.. "yeah we will replace the whole x,y,z for over $1200+." Contacted PT.. "based on what you are saying it sounds like the X. That costs around $700. I have to also check the Y to see if it is good. If it is bad it will cost... but I have to get in the transmission to inspect it." Dropped my vehicle off and it was ready the next day. My clutch on my 1999 Honda Accord was acting up. Periodically while depressed, the clutch would seem to lose pressure and stay in the down position and be slow to come back up. I researched plenty on my own and found that the likely culprit was that I needed either a master or slave cylinder and that they should normally be replaced at the same time. I called around to several places asking for a quote where I don't know if this is exactly what is wrong, but if it is, how much would you charge to fix it. Perform came back with the best price and they also had very good yelp reviews, so I took it there. Now to the part where I am very impressed with the service that I found at Perform. When I brought in my accord, the mechanic sat in my car and tried to replicate the issue (I mentioned that it was periodic). He drove it around the parking lot for a little bit and couldn't replicate it. Keep in mind that I haven't paid for a diagnosis or anything at this time. When he was done with his test drive he sent me on my way because he didn't see anything wrong... there was no "its most likely this, let me try it and bill you for it". I'm generally skeptical of mechanics, but when he was ready to let me leave without even trying to get money from me it was impressive to me. On my way out of the parking lot, the issue came back and I asked him to sit in the driver seat again. It turns out that the master and slave cylinder did need replacing and the price was the same as agreed over the phone. It's been several months and the issue has not returned. I'm very happy with my experience here. read more

A quick phone call and I got a reasonable diagnosis based on my description of the symptoms heard and felt while driving. Conclusion... Likely not a transmission problem, and recommendation to have my regular mechanic check for other issues first, such as an engine tune-up, new spark plugs, etc. Refreshing to get real advice, quickly, and avoid unnecessary expense. If and when I have a real transmission problem Perform Transition will be my first choice. read more

5 Frickin stars. Once in a while, we meet a total gem of a human being. Over my lifetime (45 yrs), I have met damn few. The MOST HONEST mechanic on god's green earth runs a one man shop: Perform Transmission, in one of the bays tucked behind the car wash at El Camino and Flora Vista (just off Lawrence and El Cam). The guy's name is pronounced Doh: a slight vietnamese guy. I kid you not: I have come into the shop for a whole variety of stuff -- sometimes telling him what I think it will cost. And many times, he solves it for much less. Now, I'm not saying that he's a magician. It's just that, you can believe what he tells you, and that he'll fix your car for exactly what it costs plus a little so he can live. I have tried at times to force extra money on him, because I know how little he charges: even when it's a more expensive repair. But trust him absolutely. I gladly speak well of him and his work. Dong knows his stuff. I took my 2015 Jeep Wrangler (JKU) to him. Engine light was on and it indicated a misfire on one of the cylinders. Prior to going to Dong I swapped out the plugs and coil packs. I dropped my car off for the day and when I returned he said that I would have to replace the ECU. To be able to point that out takes a lot of balls and confidence. So - I trusted his advice and $300 later the engine light went off and the Jeep was running like new. I'm about to call to make another appointment - to get my radiator replaced. This guy is AWESOME. I've always been afraid of dishonest mechanics because I don't really know anything about cars. My check engine light came on a couple months ago and while I feared my car would just die, the fear of having to pay hundreds of dollars kept me from getting it checked out (dumb, I know). My mom then suggested I go to Perform Transmission because she said the mechanic there was incredibly honest. Say what? So fearful of having my car do something insane (like explode while I'm driving on the Benicia Bridge back to school), I finally came into the shop today to get my check engine light checked out. Do had a quick look and then told me it was a minor problem with my catalytic converter. He patiently explained to me what it does and made sure I understood what was going on with my car. When I asked him whether or not I needed to fix it, he assured me that my car is perfectly fine to drive and not to worry about it because ordering the part to fix it would be really expensive and unneccesary. My experience is based on my phone conversation with Perform Transmission. Not at all customer friendly and professional, the person I spoke to started yelling - which is not acceptable at all. A trusted mechanic that can not do transmission services in his garage recommended which service I should get done. Without even having seen the car, Perform Transmission insisted on a transmission replacement and got rude when I started to explain the situation. Even if the transmission replacement might be at a good price - insisting on it without having done an inspection of the car does not seem to be very professional. read more

I went to Perform Transmission because my smog check failed and the electric code in one of them indicated an issue with transmission. I was recommended to change transmission on my Toyota Camry. The car has ~125K on it... but c'mon this baby can go on for at least double that. So, unconvinced I looked for a Transmission specialist. Doh's shop came up on my Yelp search as a reliable, honest shop. I visited him on a weekend. He explained to me that there were 3 possibilities - faulty electrical, wiring issues or solenoid issues. A diagnosis was recommended first before determining course of action and... he said he could accomodate me only on the following Thursday! Anyways... I decided to give the man a chance, since he was recommended for his honest work and knowledge. He diagnosed a faulty solenoid and fixed it for a few hundred dollars and reset my check engine light. This represents great savings as opposed to what my smog test shop recommended... which was to change my Transmission. That would've put me behind by at least $2K, even for a used one. I'm glad I did not trust and go with what was recommended and went to the knowledgeable person in this case. Subsequently, I took my car to another smog center (no business for folks who try to eek something out of you) and it passed with flying colors :) Thank you Doh. Highly recommend. read more

I've known Dou since 1997 when he was still located in Sunnyvale. He is one of the most honest person you'll ever meet. I go to him for all my big repairs and his cost far far less than other mechanics and he will stand by his work. My last repair was an engine overhaul for my mini that would have cost ~$5k at dealer and $3.5K from nearby shops. Parts labor and everything else came out to be ~$1.5K with him. The owner/ mechanic is person who would not rip you off. The prices that he charges is very good and the quality of service is very good. If he tells something needs to be fixed then it is truly the case.There have been number of occasions when the dealer scared me that something needs to be immediately . I go to him and he says, it can work for 3+ months. The only drawback is that since he is the only one, you cannot do a walk-in. I should say though that it is well worth it. read more
