I bought a living social deal ($59, a $150 value) which includes 2 hours of surf camp, a surfboard…read morerental, a light lunch, and photos. The living social states that lessons are limited to ten people and teaches "etiquette, ocean safety, proper form and balance, wave breaks, and technique for standing up on the board." - Location: Torrance Beach, past the two volleyball courts - look for surfboards lined up on the sand. I spent a good 15 minutes walking aimlessly around until I went back and got my cell phone to call. The number directs you past lifeguard house PA and before the next lifeguard house. The waves here are relentless for a newbie. I would head to Newport or Seal Beach for calmer waves. - Scheduling: Classes are only on Saturday and Sundays in June, July and August at 10-12pm, 1230 to 2:30pm, or 3-5pm. Sign up for classes on the website early! I had a hell of time trying to switch my registration day and ended up switching to a unfortunate date that wasn't full yet. Fortunately, the persons switching my days made it painless after the initial struggle. - Provision: Wetsuits aren't provided but the ocean temperature is decent enough to go in with a bikini. Light lunch translates to snack bars and you can forget about photos when their camera batteries are dead. - Instruction: I was actually kind of shocked that we didn't have leashes or that we weren't instructed on never facing the board horizontally against the waves (well, I guess that is common sense) and we had more than a couple of runaway boards. My runaway board almost hit some kids! Here is the schedule: 5 minutes- group introductions 10 minutes- beach drills 5 minutes- learning the ocean 5 minutes- acclimating to the water 90 minutes of SURFING! The 90 minutes of surfing turned into something like 30 minutes of surfing and an hour of waiting or surfing on your own. At one point all three instructors and all six students were standing on the beach watching other surfers. You really have to take the initiative and ask the instructors if you want to get the most out of this experience, which I admittedly did not because I had enough of these waves. I don't make it a habit to write three star reviews but I just was not having fun.

Worst experience ever!…read more Insufficient equipment, unorganized, false advertisement and unapproachable customer service. Bought $399 voucher from livingsocial good for up to 10 people. We, group of 8, were there on the date I reserved. No sign of meeting point or what so ever, it was hard to find. I checked in with Summer Surf lesson's instructor, then found out that my group was not on the list. They said I did not state how many persons in my group when doing reservation. (Their web site did not ask me to state how many persons in the group, the only column I could input is the voucher number when reserving.) At that time, they offered us two options. One was to accommodate what they had 19 people sharing 6 surfboards, OK...apparently that is not what I pay for. The other option was to change to other date. We drove 2 hours down to there, and they asked us to come down again on another date which we found very inconvenient and no time because we all live pretty far from there. I asked for refund but they refused saying they would lose money if money is returned to me. Anyway, I lost $400 and never would get it back. I would not even bother to buy this rip off from Livingsocial if it states only 6 surfboards available with full class of 10. There is way better deal out there cheaper and better equipment with wet suit available. Look it up! Save yourself time and energy. I probably lost 10 years of my life trying to deal with them and Livingsocial. You took the money without providing any service to us. Very bad, period.

Fantastic experience with Mike!…read more I booked some time for me (A somewhat experienced surfer with years of rust who had fallen out of shape) and my buddy (Brand new to surfing but in great shape. Mike was great. Met us with board and wetsuits and met each of us at our level. He was very hands on and out there in the water with us the whole time. By the end, we'd both caught a few waves and i felt like i FINALLY knew what I was doing again. Since then, we've gone a few more times. Booking again next time im on the coast.

We met by the bathrooms of El Porto by lifeguard station 12 and picked up our wetsuits from their cars. From there, we headed towards a less crowded portion of the water by the rocks, and did a quick yoga flow before going into the basics of how to pop up and hold the board. After the lesson, we got assigned our boards and went off into the water. I think both instructors tried to spread their attention as evenly as possible. I was able to stand up multiple times and surf some one-foot waves (go me!). The time flew by, and once it was over, we brought the surfboards back to their cars. They'll take Venmo for tips. I would suggest wearing your flip flops to the beach since the ground was really hot, and also bringing a water bottle for post-surf. There's paid parking available in the lot although the meters seem to be broken since I still got a ticket even though my parking should've been valid. Otherwise there's very limited street parking. You can leave your valuables in the instructor's car. You can book private lessons on the website or small group lessons as well. Definitely book the lesson - it's a great workout and you'll have so much fun!

Cat and…read moreDom are really good and caring instructors who prepared us with solid basic dry land instructions and made sure we are comfortable getting in the water. FYI, we haven't even been at the beach since covid. So, yeah... first time in the water in a while and learning how to surf. With great instructors anything is possible and it is never too late to learn something new. In the water they made sure we were safe and guided us thoroughly. My wife was able to stand on the board on her first wave. It was really fun. I needed more help and they were always there to coach us right along. We are definitely coming back for more surf lessons. If you want to learn give them a call.

The communication was excellent, responses were prompt, and the team genuinely cared about helping my niece achieve her goal--standing up on a surfboard (just like she dreamed!). They didn't just focus on the end result--they spent over two hours patiently working with her, correcting her form, and building her confidence every step of the way. Cat is amazing, Bjorn was incredibly patient and encouraging, and Rosa was so sweet! We couldn't have asked for a better team. Highly, highly recommend!

Last summer was the first year that my son attended this camp. A good friend of mine recommended it…read moreto me since my son loves doing interactive experiments and seeing how things work. Without knowing anything about the camp and going just based on my friend's rec, I signed my (then) 6 year old son for all 4 themed weeks. The first day, I asked him how his day was and his response was, "I love Galileo!" This continued on until the last day of camp. He loved it so much that he made me promise I would sign him up again the following year. Throughout the school year, I kid you not, he would randomly ask me when I would sign him up for Galileo. Once, January came around, I had no excuse, I signed him up and we are all set for the summer! He is so excited and the fact that this year, it'll be at Montemalaga Elem will make the commute much more easier! I loved how all the teachers and staff were so attentive and always interacting with the children. Even at morning drop off, it would be strange if you didn't see someone dressed up in a funny costume to welcome your little ones and take them over the thresh hold into the magical land of Galileo (it was actually an alley with paper streamers...but the kids loved it)! Each week they would work on a theme and continue working on it, until Friday-the day the kids present all their hard work and show it off to the parents. Prepare to go to pick up on Fridays with an empty trunk. You'll definitely need all the space to take home the towers and models they've built! My son loved it and if he's begging me to sign him up all school year long... Galileo is doing something right! You won't be disappoint!

My older son attended this camp last summer -- he loved it!! We'll be doing it again this summer,…read moreand here's why: 1. This is the only camp he has ever asked to add a week. 2. The staff are very professional -- not a bunch of teenagers pretending to know how to interact with kids. 3. Every morning the kids enter the camp in such a fun, positive way -- starts the day off right. 4. The kids get to do art, science/engineering, and physical activities, and they get to work on their projects the whole week, then present them on Friday. They feel very good about their projects! Thanks, Galileo!
