I decided to try out a few spots and looked for a local guide to take me out... my two days with Sean were my first two days surfing in California and were so much fun! Thank you Sean for opening my mind and growing my excitement for surf in the cold California waters! And I do NOT like the cold... I still struggle with it, but love surf so much I put up with it :) Sean was reliable... and I wasn't sure what to expect from a surfer :), he was very friendly, and overall just great about explaining the various details of the breaks we'd be surfing at. It was clear he wanted to be sure I was going to be safe. He asked the right questions to get a good understanding of my surfing level and comfort level in the water, and picked the ideal spot. I loved it so much... I wish every time I wanted to check out a new spot somewhere in California, I'd be able to find a local guide like Sean - it was by far the best way to venture into a new area. And if I lived closer to Sean, or if I find myself in his area again, I'd really like to get some good coaching as well. I know he has fabulous experience to draw on and was very gentle and helpful out on the water.

Sean took care of important details like picking out the right wetsuit and board. He is known and respected where we went to get equipment, so things went fast and smooth. Also, he was early for the appointment and I appreciate when others respect my time. As for the lesson, his teaching style is relaxed, friendly, patient, and highly informative. It's obvious he wanted me to enjoy "The Experience." And his advice and concern for safety was reassuring. He communicates well. Repeating key tips ("now, hold the board when your foot comes forward Jay") showed me he's worked with many beginners and knows where people screw up--and it worked! Standing on that board ridin' a wave was truly a regarding experience and adventure. I'll contact him the next time I'm in southern California. Lessons, info, and passion is all great. No complaints regarding the actual lesson. The only…read morecriticism I may have on that is that our instructor wasn't very structured. This might be ok for some, but for those who prefer more defined teaching style, you may want to keep this in mind. My main pain point is the reservation process and getting in touch with the school. My appointment was was canceled twice, one due to surf conditions (unavoidable), the other due to poor planning and scheduling on their part. Getting in contact and making an appointment was very difficult to begin with, and even more difficult rescheduling. Weekend lessons are limited. Just keep that in mind if you decide to work with them. Reservations are done through email which is tedious and and inefficient. Trying to call to make reservations was not possible, and even requesting a call through email was not fulfilled. I left messages and more often then not, did not receive a call back. They did apologize for the back and forth, missed calls and lack of follow ups, noting that they had been encountering problems with their phones and call service. They noted that they were in the process addressing phone issues. They tried to make up for it by offering a free land training session in their gym. Though appreciated, I didn't want to go through the effort of having to schedule that. I can't verify that the call/phone service they used has changed, or if their inefficient appointment process has changed, but that's how it was in the spring/summer of 2014. What was meant to be a jump start of a summer off learning to surf, ended up being one lesson near the end of summer. To note, the reason I kept at it in, trying to schedule a session was 1) I had purchased a deal, 2) my friend really wanted the lessons, 3) I wanted to see how the overall service and lessons would work out. In the end, it was painfully enough for me not to recommend them.

From his passion…read morefor surfing to his phenomenal teaching ability, I am glad I had the opportunity to learn from him. We started off by doing some drills in the sand to develope good habits, educate me on what to expect, and to build my confidence. We then went to the water and he guided through every step of the way. I started to fatigue and get a little anxious as I am not familiar with very many sports, especially anything in the water. However, Paulo recognized that, gave me the some cues to get my bearings back and allow me the accomplish what we set out to do .... Hang 10!! Jk I didn't really hang 10, but I did stand up on the board a handful of times and ride for a couple seconds each time. To be completely honest, I am more then happy with this result as this is realistic. I am a pretty unathletic guy with a gut and not flexible in the slightest, but I still managed to get out there and have fun.
