We love the store so much that we keep going back for different supplies. Nowadays, it's so easy to just purchase anything online, but having someone who are so willing and friendly to help you get started and keep going on with your newly discovered passion. The store seems like an over 20's hobby shop by having so many people mention about brewing, but actually, they have supplies for bread, cheese, cider, .... I even saw them teaching root beer. Next thing I want to do is making Miso and soy sauce from scratch. I am going to see if they can get me (might already have) Koji. And then, Amazake, Rice wine, Sake... Shio Koji... possibilities are endless. You could make a store for a family destination for activities together - especially in the winter when you are inside altogether. Gotta love the local homebrew store. The Pros: Generally, I've only had positive experiences with this place. The staff is super friendly and helpful. This is the shop where I bought most of my original brewing equipment, and the manager at the time was really helpful in pointing out what I would and would not need. They keep a huge stock of grains, yeast, and hops. The Cons: Several times, they have been out of stock of items I'm looking for. Their prices are not always competitive. They also charge you to mill the grain when you want to purchase milled malts. Their parking situation is a little weird, but to their credit, it isn't a huge deal except when they are really busy. Overall, visiting is well worth it for some face time with a supplier that knows their business. read more

This review should really be 2 separate reviews. Part 1: 5 stars When I 1st looked into homebrewing, I found that I was in luck. This brew supply store was within 15 minutes of where I live. I walked in with my buddy, and we were greeted by an extremely helpful employee. He explained some of the nuances of brewing, and even made some suggestions. He didn't try to sell us anything we didn't need. We hadn't plan on buying the equipment that day, but we ended up buying because of how helpful he was. They also had a great email blast letting us know when events in the area occurred. They used to have homebrewers come in to do some taste testing, and everyone would bring some snacks. It was a great atmosphere even if the building is small. For about 2 years we had purchased our ingredients and equipment from the exclusively up until a few months ago which leads to: Part 2: 1 star Billy, one of the employees, got a new job as a brew master at Tighthead Brewery. After he left there was a swift decline in the inventory, and there never seemed to be anything on the shelves. It seems they have shifted their focus from homebrewers to providing ingredients to the area breweries. I haven't heard of any events recently, and we have had to go to a new place, Grow Masters in Gurnee. Unless they go back to keeping a decent inventory of ingredients for the homebrewing crowd, I don't see myself going back here any time soon. read more

Today I was there for an "All Grain" beer making class. Andy & John were very knowledgeable and extremely clear in their explanations of the brewing process. I was the only female & I felt completely welcomed, especially when I asked questions. For example, I wanted a clear explanation of what a gravity reading meant - clearly explained. The difference between a West Coast IPA & Midwest/East coast IPAs, & so on. John is attending the Seibel Institute of Beer, so his knowledge goes above & beyond. Andy's beer knowledge is from years of home brewing experience. The gentlemen who were in class with me, also asked many questions even though they had some experience in home brewing. All of us learned something from each other and from Andy & John. I'll definitely go back for supplies and assistance. read more

There are a few things you look for in a shopping experience. Respect and someone who is knowledgable. When I first walked into Perfect Brewing Supply in Libertyville, I didn't know a lick about beer brewing. John (the product manager) and Andy (the store owner) never once talked down to me and only encouraged me that beer brewing is not as intimidating as it may seem. The first thing they set me up with was a book to read up on Home brewing and what to expect. Two weeks later I was in buying my deluxe brew kit and I'm 4 amazing beers in to brewing with no sign of stopping. They are stocked with everything you need for home brewing. Very organized and most importantly very clean. Perfect Brewing Supply is just that, perfect. Solid store. This is a great place for new and veteran brewers. The people currently running the store are helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable. They have a great variety of product immediately available despite the relatively modest store size. All the grain, hops, and yeast I have bought from this store have been very good. If they didn't have something I needed, they were either able to quickly obtain it or suggest a substitute that has always worked well. I like that they are involved in the local brewing and wine-making scene, and offer classes to get you started. They seem to cater to anything fermentation related because I have seen kombucha and cheese making products/classes/events. It appears that this place has finally closed. First they had a sign out saying they were closed for a power outage. Then closed for inventory. A textbook example of what happens to a thriving business when a new owner comes in with little to no knowledge of the business or the hobby. They have everything you need in stock and the owners are extremely knowledgeable about the brewing process and will take the time to explain everything to you. Since they've taken over the operation of this store, it has been a blast shopping here. They have awesome training classes and can cater to brewers of all experience levels. Great staff, fresh ingredients and excellent advice. I'm not sure about crafting wine and soda (never tried these), but they are really helpful when putting together an extract or all-grain beer recipe or helping me with my technique or equipment. The space is small, but they've always had everything I've needed in stock. They now stock bulk extract for extract brewers and have gotten more kits. I personally only all-grain brew now and they have a nice selection of grain and hops. read more

This place has completely turned itself around for the better! Great employees that take the time to answer your questions and even build a recipe with you. They will mill your grain for you free of charge if you wish. I've been back many times and have gotten all my ingredients from them the past 4 brews. read more

I ordered a Christmas gift online through the company's website. They processed my payment and emailed me to tell me the item was out of stock. The email was very unprofessional. I said I would wait for the item to come in and I was told I would be notified that day as to whether or not the item would arrive with the next shipment. I was not contact until a week later. I said I would still like to wait for the item to come in. Four day after Christmas, 18 days later, I inquired on the item status and got no response. Nine days later I inquired again. I received the response "no we were not able to get any at the time". This email was also written unprofessionally, didn't provide any additional information, and my account was still charged. I emailed back that I was wondering about the status of my order--if they were expecting more of the item. I received two auto-generated emails stating that my order status had changed to "Refunded" and then again to "Awaiting Fulfillment". I inquired as to what this meant. I asked what the order status was and if there had been any contact with the supplier. I wrote that I was frustrated with the service level and asked to be refunded. I received the response "not on backorder", no estimated time frame, no apology, and no comment on my refund request. My account has still not been refunded. I understand items aren't always available. My issue is with the lack of communication and the unprofessional business practices. My card should not have been charged until the item shipped. I should have been responded to more promptly and my questions should have been answered. I was made to feel like an inconvenience and an afterthought. After I am refunded I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

The two new owners both really know their stuff. This store was going downhill for some time but the 2 new guys have brought the store back to life and then some. Previous reviews on Yelp are from before these guys took over. The new guys have multiple classes scheduled - from newbie to experienced home brewers. Supplies range from equipment, to extract brewing kits to all-grain supplies. When I was there today they had about 3 dozen hop varieties from which to choose. I'm a long-time home brewer and this will (again) be my go-to place for supplies and ingredients. So very happy they are open for business again and under new ownership. This is a great store run by people who know what they're doing and want to share it with the world! I went there to get a brewing kit not knowing what exactly I was looking for. Over the course of half an hour, the nice folks there had me set up with a clone kit of one of my favorite beers and were really happy to help out. When I lost the instructions (because I'm a doofus like that), I called them up and asked for a replacement. They didn't have an electronic copy, and I live in Chicago, so the fellow instead offered to type up some instructions to send out to me! Andy is a great host for a beer brewing event! We made a stout and Andy and his assistant did all the work for us, teaching us along the way. We had ten guys and brought some beer with us to drink during the evening. Andy ordered pizza and we all had a great time. Why can't they just update their website saying they are closed? How about returning email messages? They used to be great at communicating but it appears they are finished....
