This is a review of the "Gift Emporium" side, not the "Jeweler" side. This is the place to go if you need to find a gift for a wealthy friend's graduation, retirement or anniversary. Especially if said friend is a rancher, golfer, and/or wine drinker. They have these heavy silver bookends and lots of random decorative stuff that incorporate bulls and bison. There are also fancy liquor bottles so you can pour cheap whisky in them and serve it to your unsuspecting country club friends. You can also find some estate jewelry on this side that is not too shabby. Furthermore, if you have a lady friend, mother or aunt who likes birds (think sparrows) and other garden-y elements (think shabby chic) you will find things for her here. Or him-- maybe he's a dude who likes decorative stuff for his garden or patio or pseudo balcony. I'm not judging. Price range: you better have a full-time job if you're buying things here. Watch out for: the plethora of crosses. I worry that they'll fall off the wall each time I walk in. And be nice to the lady who works there. I'm born and raised in Merced and believe in supporting local business! I've made it point to go to this shop, as I wanted to develope a good relationship with a jewelry shop I can depend on, for jewelry repair, watch batteries etc. Each time I have been greeted by indifference, and most upsettingly told what they can't do before I can even say what I want, not once but at-least twice before. Once my wife took in a ring to be resized and was told it wasnt worth resizing. It was a ring with more senitmental value than monetary worth, she left a little heart borken and embarassed. I should have never gone back after that, but I wrote off that rude and insulting behavior as someone just having a bad day! A couple of days ago walked in with a watch braclet in hand and the clerk saw it and said, we can't change batteries right now you can leave it! He said this as he helped another patron he said this in a dismissive manner. Just then another clerk walked up and said can I help you, I Said yes I'd like to buy a watch to fit into this braclet. She said oh I don't know much about watches and she asked the original clerk if he could help, at which time he repeated he can leave the watch! I said I want to buy a watch to fit this, not leave it for repair! He responded just leave, you've had a bad attitude sence you got here! I said I just want to buy a watch not get batteries! Agian he repeated just, leave. I didn't argue I just left, stunned. This is the last time I go to this shop. The fellow who asked me to leave I believe is the owner, as he is always there and the other clerks always seem to be in training. I think this shop prefers to sell items they are not really a full service jewelry store and if you go there for anything other than to just out right purchase an item. It's a bother to them, (HIM) . The rude, and insensitive gentleman is about 6 foot tall, dark hair, beard or gotee, he seems to be in-charge. He clearly doesn't want to be bothered by anything that is beyond an out right purchase. Repairs are frowned upon here, and he just has a very poor attitude and will not listen before he starts to tell you what they can't do! In short he's just negative. He lacks a customer can do attitude! I'm never going back, there are many more jewelers in Merced that are helpful and pleasant to work with than to have to deal with this clerk, he has more mood swings than a 15 year old, and is very high strung. This is an expensive nic-nac shop not a full service jewelery store, if you like to be treated with a snobby, prissy attutude this is the place for you, if not steer clear. read more

Don't waste your time going to this business. I try to go to local businesses but I will never go back to this one. The people here are so rude, especially the son's owner, Richard. They also open and close as they choose. I went in to sell some gold, after calling twice to make sure they where open and someone could help me when I go in. Of course, when I went in Richard rudely told me no one could help me there that the guy had left and to just take my gold somewhere else. When I asked what they paid for the gold he said he didn't know and to just take my gold somewhere else. I told him he could keep his silver and he just laughed and continued laughing until i had left his store. I only experienced the Jeweler portion of the establishment and I will be very blunt. One of the worst business experiences I have ever had. I found some old jewelry in my late aunt's stuff and wanted to get some checked out. The lady in the front probably said about 2 words to me and sent to me the old guy in the back. That old man in the back has absolutely no manners and was a complete a-hole. He looked at 2 rings and told me everything was fake and that I was wasting his time and very rudely threw them back on the counter and as I was leaving, told me that it was all "grocery store" jewelry. I am not a jeweler so I had no clue about checking for authenticity but this guy basically shoved me out the door.The whole ordeal was unpleasant and unprofessional. Today I went into this shop with my mother to have a coin and ring evaluated. The service was not only poor but it was also very rude and demeaning. The "gentleman" not only said what I had was worthless (which is fine) but he then proceeded to literally throw the items at us from across the counter. As we exited he made some very snide remarks. I was in the market for an engagement ring, but after the episode I had I will definently not be back. This is regarding the man at the coin section who buys jewelry. The place itself is cute and everyone on the other side is friendly, however this man is super rude. I don't care if it's "just" his personality, but I don't know him and he doesn't know me so there is no reason to be rude. I walk in and ask if they buy jewelry there and I am told they do and one guy yells out to this old man and tells him that "this lady would like to sell jewelry" so as I walk up... he takes a half look and says "you have to be 18 to sell" I do a nervous giggle and take it as a compliment, granted that this is the week of my 31 birthday, but when he repeats himself with a dead serious face and an extremely annoyed tone without even looking up, I took offense. I tell him I'm almost double that and ask him to look at a chain. He almost yells as he asks why I am standing all the way over there if his scale is on the other side. How am I supposed to know that?! There isn't any sign! He says he needs to do an acid test and after he does it he says he isn't sure if it's gold or not, and just plops it on the counter and says "not interested". Eww. There is no reason to be this rude, but whatever. I brush it off and then ask him if he can tell me what another necklace set might be. I have this beautiful vintage jewelry that I wasn't sure what it could be. He looks at it reads the stamp and says "it's garbage" I am infuriated! WHAT THE....!!!!!! I guess he could tell that I'm upset and as he leans back in his chair and puts his hands on the back of his head he says "it's gold filled, means LESS than 1% gold" I said thank you for your time and left. I don't care about the gold I am just trying to get information or maybe a lead because it's a vintage piece that belonged to my husbands great grandma that was handed down to me. It's a sentimental piece., a piece that means a lot to us that he just called "garbage" because it has no gold value. He could have worded that very differently. Maybe just explained what gold filled meant. His attitude was completely uncalled for and inappropriate. If I could put a minus zero I would.I had a ring enlarged and spent $60.00, it broke within a month. I had family issues and wasn't able to bring it back right away, so I went today. I talked to what I think was the owners son and I was so appalled at his condescending attitude. He said it would cost me $25.00 more to get it done but he could see that it broke of clean and it was nothing that I did. Yet all he would say is that it was my fault. I have never been treated with such disrespect in my life. He suppose to make this right and all he did was telling me that it was my fault. This is a million dollar business, I guess they don't have to nice.
