We generally avoid tourist traps like "Broadway on the Beach" here in Myrtle Beach, but we had an afternoon to kill and a long walk around the perimeter of the park/outdoor mall seemed like a good way to work off our delicious Mexican meal at La Poblanita's.
One stop, at Good Time Charley's was NOT a good time. See other review.
We had been to Pepper Palace two years ago on our first visit here and thought we would see if much had changed. While their broad selection of spices & salsas is much the same, we weren't impressed by the service.
A sole woman staffed the place. She was engaged in demo'ing a variety of hot sauces to the "crowd" of 20 or so patrons, wielding tiny spoons. Despite the signs warning that samples were for folks 18 and over, I counted at least a half dozen young (under 12?!) kids sampling the wares. And no masks on anyone except Susanne and me, of course--watch in two weeks for The Surge.
When it came time for us to check out with the single 16 oz. jar of "Five Pepper Fire Roasted Salsa" ($14.95 plus SC's onerous sales taxes), I literally had to interrupt the woman to ask if she might be willing to take our money so we could leave.
Susanne is an expert in reading body language and facial gestures (remember that TV series (Tim Roth's "Lie to Me")?) Well, you didn't have to be an expert to detect her annoyance. She begrudgingly set down her miniature bullhorn (why anyone would need amplification in such a tiny venue is a mystery to me) and took my credit card for payment.
What an unpleasant, over-priced, unhealthy/risky experience this turned out to be. Unlike General MacArthur, we will NOT return. read more
