I'd love my hotel stay to make me feel like I've been transported back to the nineteen twenties, I just don't want to feel like the couch in my room hasn't been cleaned since the nineteen twenties. Stained dingy furniture. No air conditioning. The single bed was clean but hard as a rock. I had to air the room out when I first arrived. It was warm and smelled a bit musty. Also: When we checked in the very polite bellhop valet parked our car in a lot across the street, and kept the keys. When we checked out, the impolite manager- Sabrina I think- just pointed to the lot across the street and told us we would have to retrieve our car. We could not find the entrance to the lot, so we went back and she gave us directions, but nobody offered to get the car for us, even thought there were four employees behind the desk. She also refused to smile. Positives: The shower's water pressure was fantastic. It was walking distance to the fancy shops and train station. If you are going to stay here, try to find a deal. The furnishings can be at times a little worn, and the walls in our room on the most recent stay had smudges beside the light switches and a couple of unrepaired "divots". Since all my stays so far have been in May, I've not suffered for lack of air conditioning, but I can understand those who say they've missed it in the summer. The smoke from the cigar bar could be detected on our floor (labeled a nonsmoking floor) - I really didn't mind it (it was "noticeable" but not strong), but I understand the problem it poses for others. The breakfast, praised by many reviewers, seems over-priced to me. But for me the positives still outweigh all this. Our rooms have always been of decent size, with a separated seating & writing area, and lots of storage space. The bathrooms are clean, roomy, and modern. The room prices are not high for a major city, particularly for a hotel in such an advantageous location. The Zoologischer Garten train station (U-Bahn, S-Bahn, Regional Rail, and Buses) is right nearby, as is KuDamm with its shopping, including KaDeWe. It's a very easy walk to Savignyplatz, with a wide range of interesting and reasonably priced restaurants. The hotel has "settled charm" and character -- it's not a modern chrome & terrazzo decor -- and that block of Fasanenstraße is relatively quiet at night. Finally, I've found the staff always to be friendly, efficient, and professional. Summary: I agree that the hotel has more stars displayed at its entrance than it may in fact deserve, but I find the quality to be in line with the room prices and that the outstanding central location more than compensates for the shortcomings.

The shower was cold unless you kept it running for ten minutes. The second night I turned on the water some time before I got ready to take the shower. There are no blinds on the bathroom window so you feel exposed when sitting on the toilet. So I turned out the lights since I like to have my privacy in the bathroom. The second lock on the room-door was broken and the room felt unsafe since right outside the window was a passway for the neighbours and anybody could have opened these old windows easily and get in. All in all the whole time in the Hotel Gates Novum Berlin felt depressing and unsafe. Like what hotels were like in the 1980s. But this is 2013! I will never stay in this hotel again and cannot recommend it at all. Sorry.

On entering the hotel I was hopeful - modern, comfortable reception area, trendily dark restaurant area leading out to a small back garden - but the reception staff were pretty unfriendly and after waiting for quite a while for my room to be ready I was dismayed to discover I'd been given the disabled room which looked right out on to the street (and yes, people could look straight in too!) Still, it was a pretty comfortable place to sleep and the breakfast next morning was pretty nice too. The coolest part of the hotel was its proximity to a climbing wall / art / squat complex further down Revaler Strasse where we enjoyed a nice beer before our show.

It's well designed and quiet. My TV wasn't working and after one day they replaced the TV with a new one. Casting worked but many chanells (English ones) were habitually out. There's an ice maker on every floor, but no ice bucket. The minifridge was good. Overall I liked the room. The service: a very mixed bag. I called for an ice bucket and plug adapter to be sent to my room. The desk manager advised that they would charge me 7 euros to send me the ice bucket, or I could come down and pick one up. Likewise the adapter, I needed to come down to get it and a 20 euro deposit would be taken. I expressed my opinion that this wasn't in keeping with a 4 star hotel, to which I was shocked to hear "we're not a 4 star hotel, we aren't rated, we're a no-star hotel". I advised that this is not how Expedia sells the property, to which he said "that's up to Expedia". I advised that clearly they had an agreement with Expedia that was misleading, that if the hotel didn't offer 4 star service I would have stayed elsewhere. He and the rest of the front desk staff are uninterested in providing courteous service. As a VIP Gold Expedia member I requested a late check out as a perk, but was charged 30 euros to have the room till 4. After an hour they called and said there would be no charge after all, but the bad taste was already set. Room service is only from 3pm-10pm. Good location, good price, comfy room, mediocre service.

Some areas fell flat for me however. I asked for a spoon in the dining area so I can eat my takeout, they gave me spoons with actual crust on them. They were gross. It made me not ever want to try dinner at the hotel because I no longer trusted their cleanliness. Also, my sink was clogged. I didn't request a new room because my trip was long and it would have required too much energy to get a new one. The room I had was also very far from the nearest elevator. I had to walk down several halls to get there which is bothersome with luggage. Another highlight was the bathroom. The water got very hot very fast. It was a stand up shower that looked very clean. The room felt a bit cramped, but they did manage to fit four beds in one room, which is impressive in itself, especially knowing each bed had their own outlet. There was plenty of table space and the tv seemed to be motion activated. There's a kitchen area in the second floor. The fridge smelled but that's where you find the convenient laundry. There's a vending machine as well which I liked. The only negative about that is that the put different snacks in the same row. Something you want could be behind something you do want which is kind of a tease. The beds were comfortable to me. And the room was very clean upon arrival. The place wasn't expensive so I think you get around what you pay for. If I were management, I would work on the details. The little things that could make you lose faith in the owners. Whether it's double checking to make sure everything works properly and is up to standards. The concepts and idea behind the systems are very efficient and convenient. Execution and attention to detail needs to be improved.
